After making seven albums, Belle and Sebastian have just
made the most forceful record of their career. Most people
may think they’ve got them pegged as fey cuties,
but the band have cut the feet out from under everyone
with a record of startling clarity, accomplishment and
impact. 'The Life Pursuit' is nothing short of a revelation.

5/16/07 Belle & Sebastian back in print on vinyl!

Stop the eBay madness people! We're pleased as punch to announce a new vinyl reissue series, putting Matador classics back on wax 180 grams at a time. Making a win/win situation an even bigger winner, these reissues, like all recent Matador vinyl, will include a free download of the album in mp3 format.
Belle and Sebastian's first four records are included in the reissue campaign, and are now available for purchase in the Matador Store!
2/09/07 Belle & Sebastian ranks high in Pazz & Jop '06!
The Village Voice's Pazz and Jop poll for this year has been released, and 3 Matador artists put in top 20 showings:
#11 Cat Power-The Greatest
#14 Belle & Sebastian-The Life Pursuit
#18 Yo La Tengo-I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass
Plus five other Matador releases rank elsewhere on the list, bringing this year's Mata-total to a whopping eight. As this evidence makes clear, they love us in Deadbird, Arizona, or wherever it is the Voice has been outsourced to these days.

—Amazon.com calls "The Life Pursuit" #10 of 2006
As the year winds down, the inevitable best of 2006 list will start rolling out. Amazon.com has unveilled their list early (all the better to lock in holiday sales), and Belle & Sebastians "The Life Pursuit" is right there at the #10 spot. Check out the whole list HERE.

—A few digital consolations for missers of recent zeitgeist defining performances
If you were unable to catch Belle and Sebastian's recent show
in New York's Battery Park, Baltimore's Merriweather Ampitheatre
or the crazed scenes that took place at the Hollywood Bowl
earlier this month, keep in mind that we're hopeful the band
will be returning to our shores in the Fall for more gigs.
In the meantime, the video for 'The Life Pursuit''s "White
Collar Boy" (directed by Michael Palmieri) is fully viewable
at Launch.com.
In addition, here's a link to video and audio from a recently broadcast session for Santa
Monica's KCRW.

— White Collar Boy video and single coming soon
In addition to some huge open air July gigs in New York, Los
Angeles and Bethesda, MD we're happier than Rutger Hauer's
gardener to announce that Tuesday June, 13 marks the video
premiere of "White Collar Boy" on Yahoo Launch. To commemorate
this event, we're giving away autographed copy of 'The Life
Pursuit' to the first fellow prisoner to punch Ken Lay in
the head (please note we haven't said who is autographing
the CD --- the members of Belle & Sebastian might be unavailable).
 |
An
iTunes single of "White Collar Boy" will be available on June
26 with four non album b-sides.
Coming on July 6, Belle and Sebastian will be appearing on
KCRW's "Morning Becomes Ecelectic", the same day as their
massive Hollywood Bowl gig with the Shins.
It's been called to our attention that Columbus, OH's CD101
has been playing "White Collar Boy" at every available opportunity.
Given the inability of the Columbus Blue Jackets to advance
to this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs, cynics might say the
station has many more hours of programming to fill. Since
we're not cynical however, we'll chock it up to quality being
recognized.

—World Tour '06-these laminates are hot on Ebay!
Some of us can honestly say that the recently completed Belle
and Sebastian tour of North America with the New Pornographers
was the highlight of our year. And not just because we were
scalping tickets, either. The latest single from 'The Life
Pursuit' in the UK is "The Blues Are Still Blue", available
on the usual assortment of multiple formats that we'll be
scrambling to collect, including a 7" b-side of "Whiskey In
The Jar". Hopefully better than the Metallica version, though
that wouldn't be very hard. Belle & Sebastian's remaining

The
band will also be appearing in London's Trafalgar Square on
Saturday, April 29 as part of the "Love Music, Hate Racism"
event. In the spirit of solidarity, one of Matador's proprietors
is trying to organize a "Hate Racism, Ambivalent About Big
Crowds" demonstration, but the bulk e-mail keeps bouncing.
So full credit to those who are making a real effort.

— Contest closed, entrants urged to stop singing
It isn't enough for us to bask in the critical acclaim and
crazy hot sales and scalper-riffic results stemming from Belle
& Sebastian's new 'The Life Pursuit' and subsequent North
American tour with the New Pornographers. No. No. No. We want
you to sing
along with them, as well.
Or we did. The contest is now closed. Sorry. You should see
how much stuff we have to finish everyday, really.
We thought about sending some cease and desist letters to
YouTube over Belle & Sebastian's recent appearance on "Late
Nite With Conan O'Brien', but we need to hire a full time
person for this c&d stuff. And that isn't an invitation to
send a resume, really.
02/22/06
— Contest extended to March 1st!
The Sing Along With Belle and Sebastian Contest
has been extended to March 1st. C'mon, enter!
02/08/06 — Sing
Along With Belle and Sebastian Contest
Submit your version of "Dress Up In You"
and win a chance to fly to Seattle and join the band onstage
to sing the song. Contest details.
01/24/06 — Selling
out fast
Belle and Sebastian's forthcoming US tour with
The New Pornographers is shaping up to be the hottest
ticket of 2006 --- we're already looking at sellouts in
most major cities, so in the immortal words of Mike Tice,
you'd better get 'em while they're hot. Our friends in
the United Kingdom can see Belle & Sebastian performing
"Funny Little Frog" onBBC2's "Top Of The Pops" this Sunday
night.
12/24/05 — Tour
with New Pornographers - We'd better rent a big bus.
While venues and dates are still being confirmed, we can
announce that Belle & Sebastian and The New Pornographers
will be touring together in early '06 throughout North
America, the former in support of the forthcoming 'The
Life Pursuit', the latter behind the consensus pick for
the album of 2006, 'Twin Cinema'.
A live recording of Belle & Sebastian performing their
classic 'If You're Feeling Sinister' album live at London's
Barbican as part of ATP's "Don't Look Back" series is
now available for exclusive iTunes Music store purchase,
all proceeds to benefit the the DEC's Asia Quake Appeal.
12/19/05 — Bio posted
for 'The Life Pursuit'
The new bio has been posted.
11/28/05 — On tour
September 25th 2005 saw the staging of one of the highlights
of All Tomorrow’s Parties' celebrated Don’t
Look Back series of concerts at the Barbican Centre –
wherein a hand-picked selection of bands take one of their
seminal works and play it through from start to finish.
Beginning with ‘Stars of Track and Field’
and ending three-quarters-of-an-hour later with the ebullient
‘Judy and the Dream of Horses’ (replete with
dancing in the aisles), Belle and Sebastian performed
their classic second album, ‘If You’re Feeling
Sinister’, in its entirety for the first and most
likely only time.
 |
Fortunately
for those not there – and there were many since
the Barbican sold out in a matter of hours - the show
was recorded for posterity and is now being available
as a special download-only album, through iTunes, on
December 6th, with all proceeds to be donated to the
DEC Asia Quake Appeal.
On the night, augmented by additional string players,
the Belles delivered a sterling performance, easily
eclipsing anything the still-nascent band might have
mustered nine years earlier on the record’s original
release.
“Good tunes, badly played,” is how one band
insider describes the original album. “It was
an album the band were never happy with, and they viewed
it as a chance to get it right.”
Despite these short-comings, ‘If You’re
Feeling Sinister’ is the Belle and Sebastian album
of choice for a certain kind of cute cognescenti, and
is within “a bawhair” of being their biggest
selling album (48 “units” behind ‘The
Boy With Arab Strap’ in America!)
Meanwhile, the first MP3 from the upcoming 'The Life
Pursuit' (out February 7th) is now available —
entitled "Another Sunny Day" and on the music
page.
11/12/05 — Belle
and Sebastian return to Matador
They say you can't go home again. And they're right,
especially if someone else has moved in. You can, however,
return to Matador Records if you're Belle & Sebastian.
We'll be releasing the new 13 song Belle & Sebastian
CD/LP 'The Life Pursuit' in North America (under license
from Rough Trade) on February 7.

Recorded
in Los Angeles with producer Tony Hoffer, 'The Life
Pursuit' is as thrilling, funny and focused as any recording
to date in the Belle & Sebastian canon. We're hesitant
to say things like "it's their best yet" because there's
every possibility we'll drag that one out of the bag
12-18 months from now, too. In fact, you can probably
bet on it.
Following the UK dates below, we're looking forward
to announcing US dates starting next March.
