Yo La Tengo / Cat Power webcasts this weekend
What were the great rock festivals of all time? Woodstock
(I, II or III)? The HORDE tour? The US Festival? Monsters
Of Rock? The Up In Smoke Tour? Roskilde? A Nice Weekend In
Upper Volta? All of the above have their good points and bad,
but none of em can compare to the ongoing Digital Club
Festival, an event that allows fast-talking people weve
never met to cash in on the notoriety of our more popular
bands. Since you, the loyal fans of fill-in-the-blank, get
to see these webcasts, everyone is a winner (except perhaps,
the people at the gig who cant see around the roving
camera crews).
July 24, 10pm EST, Yo
La Tengo @ Maxwells, Hoboken NJ
Will be archived for broadcast on demand for 3 months.
July 24, 10pm EST, Cat
Power @ 40 Watt Club, Athens, GA
Will be archived for broadcast on demand for 3 months.

This Thursday night, Cat
Power will be in session on the John Peel program on BBC
Radio One (97-99 FM), from 10pm UK time to Midnight. Chan
Marshall will be performing a selection of covers that didn't
quite make it onto 'The Covers Record,' taped at Maida Vale
just a few weeks ago. If you're not near a radio or live elsewhere
on the planet, you can tune in via Real
Audio.

Paths
Of Victory from the new Cat Power LP/CD,
'The Covers Record,' will be available as a free MP3
download, starting tomorrow, March 7. We read a very compelling
letter from an intelligent young person who urged us to a)
give away more free music, b) revamp the web site and c) pass
along a personal message to Sid Fernandez. We are doing the
best we can with "a", averaging almost one new MP3 every week
(giving or take, uh, a few weeks). "B", is an ongoing project
that will come to a skidding halt as soon as we can agree
on which shade of fuscia we like best. As far as "c" is concerned,
we're very sorry, but we can't help you out.
There's a one-off Cat Power show in London on March 14 (Drill
Hall), followed by North American dates that you'll probably
want to attend.

Chan
Marshall will be on the cover of the Feb/March issue of
Mean Magazine, out Feb 21. Which will come as thrilling news
for those of us who aren't patient enough for Grand Royal
to start publishing again. And don't even get us started on
Popsmear. Non Phixions center spread in Martha
Stewart Living has been cancelled until further notice.

Cat Power has a new record for y'all. She's calling
it "The Covers Record" because, yes, it's all covers. It features
Chan's take on 12 tracks by The Rolling Stones, Michael Hurley,
Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground, Nina Simone and Cat Power among
others. Covering herself? Yup. That's how good it'll be. Due
in stores March 21, 2000.
In the meantime, Cat Power will be touring in Australia. Mushroom
will be re-releasing "Moon Pix" in anticipation of the tour
with these three bonus tracks: "Kingsport Town" - Radio Aligre
Sessions France 10/98; "Schizophrenia's Weighted Me Down"
- from the UK CD5 of "Nude As The News"; "Sea Of Love" - from
Everything Is Nice. Those of us outside the Southern Pacific
archipelago will have to claw our way through the import bins.

slightly; the songs have not.

Also look next week to us for a complete photo and interview
fest with all your favorite Matador acts. For now, we bring
you candid snapshots and MP3 interview clips with Chan Marshal
and Chavez on how they came to know Matador, childhood scars,
and kegs of beer. Chan Marshall
(Cat Power) talks about how she came
to know Matador.
