MATADOR STAFF FORMS COMEDY TROUPE
You know, closing a major deal with a major record company can
make things in the office a little stressful. So to vent a little
of that extra tension, the gang at Matador started doing "Joke
Of the Day." Well that really relaxed everyone (even Dick Dahl!),
and from there it grew to "Stand-Up Routine" of the day. Then
one crazy drunken morning we heard that Grass Records started
doing stand-up, and we said, if they can do it, so can we. In
turn, the birth of "Bulls In the Ring," Matador's comedy troupe,
was formed.
Everyone has always said that Matador has a great sense
of humor, you know, putting out records by the Frogs and Bullet
LaVolta, but here is where the employees of Matador get to
shine, doing comedy sketches, songs, and improv.
The first show was at experimental comedy night at the Luna
Lounge where funny man Jesper Eklow warmed up the crowd with
his take on "Swedes Who Rock." Then two of the prime ladies
of Matador took the stage, Christina and Rusty, doing a take-off
on Abbott and Costello with "Who Gets to Work First."
Next
up, Patrick Amory turned on the charm with his knee-slapping
"What's So Funny About Soundscan?" Top hats, canes, and tails
were brought out when the boys of shipping launched into the
musical number "Getting Stoned with the Messengers." (The
same tune can currently be heard on Broadway in "Rent.") The
night closed out with Carrie and Kris going whole hog into
the world of improv, riffing with the audience with such topics
as the Unabomber and the Jackie auction.
The troupe will return to the Luna, as well as appearances
at the Lakeside Lounge and Gerard's favorite, "The Boston
Comedy Club." No movie deal yet!
