A small personal incident to illustrate my point:

In early 1996, Details did an article on record label web sites and ran a favorable review of ours. The author started off the review by saying that the best thing about our site was that it was devoted to showing how the the web sucks. I was extremely flattered... it was probably the best, most on-target thing that anyone's written in a review. But the editor chopped the first sentence off. It was inappropriate (I found this out from talking to the writer); Details et al. cover technology to SELL technology... while on a case-by-case basis, this may not hold across the board (reviews that actually criticize technology do exist), the ultimate motivation is to sell readers shit. --CM
