JOAN TIMONY
Mother of Mary Timony (Helium)
Joan: She's always wanted to be a musician or an actress. In
grade school they'd have talent shows and she would gather kids
together and act out songs. One of the things she did was ...
the little Frog...
Escandalo: Kermit the Frog?
Yes, Kermit the Frog. She sang that song...
"Rainbow Connection?"
Yes, that's the one. She sang it and she wore a little frog
costume. Then in eighth grade she dressed up like Boy George
and did one of his songs. Everybody howled. They loved it.
This was a very quiet school, so the parents were aghast.
So I guess you weren't surprised when she started playing
in bands.
No, her brother played in bands, too, and she always said
she was going to learn to play the guitar better than him.
She started off playing the viola.
Was she a girl scout?
No, but she was a bluebird for a couple years.
Was she active in sports?
Basketball, in 7th and 8th grade. She was really good, but
then in high school she got into music.
Are you familiar with Helium? Have you seen them play?
Yeah, every time they come to town we go. I think they're
great. I like to hear them on the record more than live. The
music is so loud it hurts my ears. We're very supportive.
Is there something fans of Helium should know about Mary
that they wouldn't know otherwise?
She's very creative. She's an artist, too. I'm a teacher
and she came into my classroom and painted the room purple
and blue, made big circles on the door. It's just beautiful!
