PEGGY TOUPS
Mother of Fontaine Toups (Versus)
Peggy: She was always a very quiet, good little girl. A very
good student. She was active in the choir and marching groups
and that sort of thing but she never mentioned music as a career.
She always wrote a lot of poetry and that sort of thing, but
to be perfectly honest with you, I was totally amazed! (laughs)
That she was in a rock band?
That she was going into that type of a career, because she
started off in college as a computer science major, totally
unlike any of my other five children. She was the only one
of six children who was not afraid to leave town and embark
on a career. She moved from Beaumont to Austin, that's when
she began this business with the band and then she moved.
I thought in two to three years she'd lose interest in it
and return home like most people do. But she didn't! She continued
to move onward and upward! We have a couple lawyers in the
family and an accountant...but she's a totally different personality!
It's nice to have someone different in the family.
Have you seen her band? What did you think?
I was just amazed! I've been amazed for years! I think it's
really "cool" that she does what she wants to do. That music
is probably more popular in the East than it would be down
here. This is kind of redneck country music here. Our biggest
local star here is Mark Chestnut. So that music, other than
in a few clubs, is not really the thing in this area ... but
it wasn't offensive to me! In fact, one of the more recent
things she's done with this girl...Containe....that I REALLY
liked. I thought that had something that could move even people
in my age group. It had a pleasant sound....I think it's great
you all are putting out some kind of information because I've
looked at some of those people and one of them in particular
that I really liked was that Kurt Cobain. And I couldn't help
but think, with the tragedy of that poor man's life, what
kind of background he came from. Because he looked so typical
of a certain group of kids that I got accustomed to a few
years back, so I think it's wonderful to get some information
on some of these folks.
Is there something fans of Versus should know about Fontaine
that they wouldn't know otherwise?
If she sets her mind to do something, she'll do it. She
may branch off and do something like Containe, which I think
is a good idea. She's an extremely intelligent young lady
and she has the perseverance to do whatever she wants to do.
I met the band when they were in Houston and all of they were
just delightful. Band members are just regular people too.
They're not any different than the rest of us. They just have
a different career.
