Biography

  Love Of Diagrams EP
January 30, 2007

Melbourne trio Love Of Diagrams have been making their mark on the Australian music scene since 2001, with fiery live shows and an album and EP on the Unstable Ape label.  Now, after two trips to the US and Europe (including combustible performances at SXSW last March), they have signed to Matador to release their US debut.

This limited-edition self-titled EP includes a cover of "Cool," the early-80s club hit by Athens, GA legends Pylon, as well as "Pace Or The Patience" off their forthcoming Matador album, Mosaic (out April 10), the popular 2005 single "No Way Out" (featured on "The O.C."!), and one unreleased track.

Love Of Diagrams share a love for both the experimentation of No Wave and the immediacy and off-kilter tunefulness of classic UK post-punk.  Their stripped-down guitar-bass-drums racket and call-and-response vocals emit a wonderfully controlled urgency.

“All we need is for them to grind with DFA and we'd
have our 6th major religion.  It is that good.” --Vice

Direct your mouses HERE, and you'll find the first sampling of Love of Diagrams offered on this site. The track on display here, "No Way Out," is available on the new self-titled EP (out 1/30). Think of it as the opening course in the full length banquet to come.
11/30/06 Love of Diagrams EP out on January 30
Love of Diagrams first release on Matador will be a self-titled EP with one song from their forthcoming full length (recorded with Mission of Burma's own Bob Weston), one outtakes from the sessions, one live Pylon cover, and the ubiquitous "No Way Out" thrown in for good measure. Lead track "Pace or The Patience" is exactly the kind of scrappy post-punk that will knock your socks off, just like their future classic of the rock canon "No Way Out" did. Shanghaied by "The OC" and still super cool. How do they do it?
09/05/06 Love of Diagrams signs to Matador Records
Matador is happier than Donald Rumsfeld holding the Aspartame patent to announce the signing of a  worldwide deal with the Australian trio LOVE OF DIAGRAMS.

Guitarist Luke Horton, bassist Antonia Selbach and drummer Monika Fikerle either have record collections very similar to ours (well, the teaming with late 70's/early '80's noise, punk and pop part, not so much the Peter Allan albums) or they've got some kinda scary telepathy thing going on. Or perhaps a little of both. The last band we heard that combined that love-at-first-listen familiarity and a voice all their own with such panache...well, we're not gonna say their name. Not out loud, anyway.

To date, Love Of Diagrams have released one five song CD EP, 'We Got Communication' (2004) on the Australian imprint Unstable Ape, a 7" of "No Way Out" on the UK Passport Label, and a 2003 debut album, 'The Target Is You' (Unstable Ape)

The band's 2nd full-length album, recorded this past spring with producer Bob Weston (Shellac, Mission Of Burma) will be available in all territories on Matador in early 2007. The likelihood of a pre-album EP is pretty high, but we're still sorting out dates, times, prices, ways to have the news turn up on someone else's website first, etc.
