New Mogwai MP3 – “The Sun Smells Too Loud”

We’re pleased to unveil the first MP3 from the upcoming Mogwai LP/CD, ‘The Hawk Is Howling’ (out September 23) – “The Sun Smells Too Loud” is a fairly substantial hint that said album is gonna be a scalp-scorcher.

OK, don’t get me wrong, I like the track. It’s great. But “scalp-scorcher?”
Pig Destroyer plays scalp-scorching music. Dillinger Escape Plan. Maybe even Metallica. Mogwai? Uhh…

what a great tune, sounds like a cross between grandaddy and ratatat IMO, but mostly just mogwai. i like it a lot, summer->friends->beer->hangover->repeat comes to mind, in a really really good way.

I like it already because I can picture it being one one those mellow downers in a concert before herod kicks in or sth like that. I can really picture this song in a Mogwai repertoire, and silent has never EVER hurt mogwai (think CODY). Plus, in the back of the song there is always some fuzz going on, in a loud and messy setting this could turn into a great shoegazing tune.
And scalp-scorching is a very appropriate term considering mogwai, as dillinger escape plan can’t come close to the raw power these guys can unleash on any given night if they decide to flex their muscles a bit.
enough, we’ll see how the hawk will howl.

This song itself is alright, maybe a little bit different to what we would expect from Mogwai but then again being unpredictable is what makes them so great.
What isn’t too good is the fade out at the end, which Mogwai have to memory never used before in a song. I think fade outs should be used for pop music, not for Mogwai.
The fade out is a minor thing though compared to the absolutely terrible mastering done on this track, and therefore probably the whole album, which isn’t really Mogwai’s fault at all. Like Happy Songs, Hawk was mastered at Abbey Road. I think with Happy Songs they got it right, having a nice amount of dynamics and none of that “brick wall” limiting. With this track though its hardly got any dynamics at all, maybe 10dB, AND its got clipping which is just awful.
Call me an audiophile but using pop-music style production techniques on Mogwai totally ruins their great music. I think all of us would appreciate some properly mastered music these days but unfortunately Abbey Road have killed Mogwai’s great sound. (sorry for the long post)

It’s great to have news about the new work… this song tastes a sense of joy mixed with the particular Mogwai’s style…

To me its more like Ratatat then Mogwai..but doesnt sound bad.

I like this track a lot. It’s uplifting but not wimpy. The chimey & fuzzy guitars compliment each other quite nicely. The only thing that I’m less than thrilled with is the somewhat predictable build at the end but that’s picking a very small nit

I find it difficult to fault this track, catchy!
I don’t agree with gripes about the fade-out and predictable ‘buildup’, I doubt this track is supposed to sound/ feel much like their more atmospheric efforts.
