Watch Pink Eyes hold his own with the heavyweights, and also see an outstanding version of “Crusades” from the festival.

Cave Singers – At The Cut MP3

By Todd Netter on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

cave singers self-portrait

Despite their name, The Cave Singers do not actually hail from any physical cave that we’re aware of – though Seattle can be a dark and mysterious city, with its share of stalactite-esque hangers-on. Metaphysically, however, said Cave Singers have filled a cave-like void in Matador’s collective musical consciousness this summer. In delivering their sophomore album Welcome Joy, they’ve unleashed a followup that builds on the earthy, guitar picking, folkiness of their debut Invitation Songs, but with 10 times better production. Take a listen to the latest MP3, At The Cut, and let the Cave Singers rattle around the recesses of your brain for a while. Tell us you don’t just want to hop into a car and hit the highway full speed simply to see where the open road leads you? [Ok don't actually tell us if you disagree. It's not so much that we don't care but instead know a perfect little cave (between your own ears) that we encourage you to voice your opinions.] At The Cut may just be a little teaser but luckily you don’t have to wait long, the whole album, Welcome Joy, hits stores Tue, Aug 18th!

At The Cut MP3

Also be sure to leave your caves (ok last poorly worded cave reference, we promise) when they swing through a city near you. You’ll be happy you did!

Kurt Vile – Childish Prodigy album, 7″, first MP3

By Patrick on Thursday, July 16th, 2009

ole-887-kurt-vile-childish-prodigy-w-sticker

As previously announced, we are releasing über-talented Philly singer-songwriter Kurt Vile’s second album Childish Prodigy this fall. Release date is October 6, and you can see the artwork above. This absorbing, addictive and richly detailed album covers an immense amount of ground compared to its predecessor, from the pounding stomp of “Hunchback” and the hypnotic beat of “Freak Train” to the unexpected, soaring trumpet in “Amplifier.”

The first MP3 from Childish Prodigy is the lovely, haunting “Overnite Religion”:

Overnite Religion (192k mp3)

It’s becoming a habit for us to release a 7″ before an album, and Kurt is no exception. “He’s All Right” will be in stores on September 8. The A-side comes from the album, and it contains two non-LP B-sides.

Kurt Vile on WKDU’s Music for Your Methlab

By Hector on Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Philadelphia’s favorite son, Kurt Vile, invaded drive-time as a guest DJ on hometown station WKDU last Thursday. As you might expect, he brought with him a plethora of high quality music, and the folks at Testostertunes were kind enough to make the show available for download. Get it now, before the frenzied rush of Matablog readers kills the Sendspace links.

Mission Of Burma: 1, 2, 3 Partyy! New album, 7″ and MP3

By Patrick on Monday, July 13th, 2009

ole-878-the-sound-the-speed-the-light

On October 6, Matador will be releasing Mission Of Burma’s fourth studio LP, The Sound The Speed The Light. Recorded in Boston with Bob Weston at the controls, the record is a departure from the pinned-needles roar of 2006′s The Obliterati. The new album sounds far more spacious and dynamic. It is more or less divided into 4 sets or suites of 3 songs. Each suite explores a set of moods or colors, across the usual dizzying array of lyrical topics, from alcoholism to fleshly concerns. The anthemic, catchy opener, our first MP3, is a classic Burma rocker on a level with “This Is Not A Photograph” or “That’s How I Escaped My Certain Fate.” Other tracks, such as “Feed,” “Forget Yourself,” and “Slow Faucet,” the latter a live favorite for some time, are slow, hypnotic builders. “Good Cheer” is a burst of almost uncontainable joy and fun that literally explodes from the speakers.

Of course, all the Burma trademarks are also present: the military snare drum, the melodic basslines high up on the neck, and the furiously experimental guitarwork, refracted and changed back into the songs via tape loops – all punctuated by the hoarse shouts of drummer Peter Prescott. This controlled chaos, this disciplined letting go, is the heart of what they do and it remains as exhilarating and fulfilling as ever.

6 weeks before the album, on August 18, we will be releasing a pre-album 7″ containing two non-LP tracks: “Innermost” and “Here It Comes.”

Download the MP3 “1, 2, 3, Partyy!” here:

Jay Reatard – Second MP3 from Watch Me Fall: “Wounded”

By Patrick on Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

jay_rob_walbers

Jay Reatard’s new album Watch Me Fall comes out on August 4 (on vinyl) and August 18 (on cd and digital). The second promo MP3, entitled “Wounded,” wraps layers of Tall Dwarfs-ish acoustic guitar around a typically complex Jay song structure. In two and a half minutes it builds to an ironically celebratory refrain. We challenge you to get this one out of your head after listening to it a couple of times.

Coming Sept. 22 – Times New Viking’s ‘Born Again Revisited’

By Gerard on Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

ole-860

A pox on those who claim the venerable VHS format is dead ;  in fact, Times New Viking delivered the master recordings to their forthcoming LP/CD/digital album ‘Born Again Revisited’ (OLE 860) on a Video Home System cassette.  Addressing the mountain of constructive criticism they’ve received from self-styled musicologists wanna-be producers and persons with my initials, the Columbus based trio promise their 2nd Matador album (and 4th overall) features “25% higher fidelity”, a percentage our own engineering staff has confirmed after hourse of exhaustive laboratory tests.

Much has been made in the press of late of Cheap Trick’s attempts to steal Adam, Beth and Jared’s thunder by releasing their upteenth comeback album on 8-track, but with all due respect to the state fair fixtures Rockford’s finest, it’s been a generation since they’ve come up with anything as provocative as ‘Born Again Revisited”s “Move To California” or “No Time No Hope” (mp3).  While Times New Viking continue to make-it-look-easy, I can assure you it’s anything but that.   A cursory glance at the American rock underground reveals a landscape littered with well-intentioned but vastly inferior bands who’ve caught the lo-fi bug ; Times New Viking are well advised to disavow responsibility for the epidemic, but whoever the guilty party is, the ferocity of TNV’s shows and their sheer quality of their songwriting should be enough to win them a presidential pardon, not unlike the one ‘Born Again’ author Chuck Colson never quite received.

Mission Of Burma / Fucked Up – Free Brooklyn Show, July 12

By Gerard on Friday, July 3rd, 2009

(Clint Conley photo by Kirstie Shanley)

(Fucked Up pic by David Waldman)

Jelly NYC, the folks behind the beloved McCarren Pool parties of yesteryear have shifted their venue this summer to Brooklyn’s East River State Park (90 Kent Ave.)  Summer 2009′s kickoff show happens Sunday, July 12 and features Mission Of Burma, Fucked Up, Baltimore’s Ponytail, former Be Your Own Pet vocalist Jemina Pearl and DJ Jonathan Toubin.  It all starts at around 2pm and we can promise this will be the hottest free concert to hit the NYC area since Diana Ross played Central Park in 1983.  This is an appropriate analogy because a) much like Ms. Ross, Peter Prescott’s performance features many costume changes and b) the two performers previously were a part of historic combos that changed the face of music (Diana with the Supremes, Peter with the Molls).
