July 21st, 2009 at 8:00 am by Gerard
As mentioned on the Matablog last June 4, The new Yo La Tengo CD/2XLP/digital album ‘Popular Songs” (OLE 856-1,2) is hitting record shops & e-tailers on September 8. However, as we’ve hinted previously, you can start listening to ‘Popular Songs’ on August 4 via Matador’s award-winning Buy Early Get Now scheme.
Now in it’s 8th incarnation, this version of BEGN features the following for advance purchasers of ‘Popular Songs’ on double LP or compact disc ;
- one of the above configurations, available for collection at a trusted physical retailer on September 8.
- the full album stream starting August 4, with exclusive bonus MP3s to follow.
- a vinyl LP featuring Yo La Tengo’s Orginal Score from the Motion Picture “Adventureland”
- a poster (design TBD, but trust us, you’ll be pleased).
Of course, you can also pre-order ‘Popular Songs’ directly from The Matador Store.

How many varnishes will the cover have?
July 21st, 2009 at 12:34 pm
somewhere in the triple digits, though we’re thinking of preparing a special, homemade secret recipe just for you.
ok, wait a moment. I thought you meant varnishkas. Patrick, can you help this man out?

What about Austin?

Don’t play the Crystal Ballroom in Portland! It has the worst sound in town. The Roseland would be a much better venue. Everyone here hates the Crystal!

Hi YoLa’s.
I am very happy that you come to Bielefeld in November.
That was a real good idea.
Glad to see you and many friendly greetings from Germany!

I must be pretty stupid, but I can’t figure out how to actually take advantage of this incredible offer. Is there a link that says “Go for it!” that I’m missing? How much does all of this cost by the way?

Will there be a download code available with the LP version of the BEGN?
July 21st, 2009 at 7:52 pm
I think an Austin date is pretty likely on a subsequent trip — not long afterwards.
July 21st, 2009 at 7:52 pm
the LP version of ‘Popular Songs’ will include a download code.

Just out of curiosity, what award(s) has Buy Early, Get Now won? Super cool per usual.

Quick question that you folks may or may not know the answer to.
I’m looking to purchase tickets for the YLT show at the Opera House here in the fine city of Toronto on the third of October, in this year of 2009. Now, according to ticketmaster.ca (http://www.ticketmaster.ca/event/100042F4843154E8?artistid=736507&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=60) the “pre-order” which is currently on, involves the AUTOMATIC addition of a $15 surcharge (in Canadian dollars) to purchase the album POPULAR SONGS. My question to you is, does this copy of the album qualify for the BEGN goodness? Or, were you even aware that such a thing was happening (I’d like to assume you were).
If it doesn’t, I still want to get the album via BEGN (for all the awesomeness) so I’ll wait until the public sale goes on Saturday, and get my tickets then, and purchase my BEGN from one of the fine Toronto retailers who participates in your fine program.
(Also, in other news, I did a presentation in a marketing course I was taking last semester where I cited the brilliance of BEGN as a way to revitalize the flagging music industry. More people should be doing what you guys are doing. Kudos.)

Nobel Prize For Buying Early, Getting Now? Didn’t we do a matablog post about this?
July 22nd, 2009 at 5:30 pm
I’m with Barry. Do, please, come to Austin.
July 22nd, 2009 at 8:51 pm
Deservedly so!
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:04 am
Like Peter, I also feel kind of stupid, because no matter what link I click I can’t figure out how to actually go through with purchasing this. I second the suggestion of adding a simple, “Go for it!” button.

Laura,
thanks for the suggestion. You can either pre-purchase the album from a participating retailer or order it directily from Matador. http://www.matadorrecords.com/store/index.php?catalog_id=377
