Dear Friends,
The weekend is pretty much here but honestly, we’re already looking forward to Monday. This Monday, September 14th, we’re going to premiere Girls’ “Album” as a high-quality stream on the True Panther Sounds site, www.truepanther.com.
If you’ll forgive the editorializing: This is a day that comes after almost two years of hard work by the band, a lot of blood sweat tears laughs and late nights, and the result couldn’t be more exciting for any of us. A lot of you maybe have heard a couple of songs off of the record already, one of them got named one of the top songs of the decade, others have floated around on singles and blogs. Some may have even heard the janky leak! But beyond those few tastes, Album, is a packed and fully realized treasure- the 12 tracks touch on so many familiar and beloved sounds but are fundamentally powered by the unchecked honesty, unbridled sincerity and incredible craftsmanship that is so hard to find in music these days. The New York Times put it better than I probably can (that is why they’re paid to write I suppose!). It’s not a re-exploration of the sounds we have loved but in fact the songs on this album are “templates for others to copy“. This is one of the proudest and most exciting time in this young label’s young life and we want to thank the band and you guys for making it happen.
The premiere stream will be available on the site at 10AM EST, in high quality streaming format from beginning to end. We hope you enjoy it.

Careful, there’s a rather large kick drum at the top of that ramp. “South Of France” from ‘Free Drugs’, as performed on the Snickers-tastic Daily Habit (thanks to Gabe for the link)
The above video was shot in Minneapolis’ Loring Park this past August. I could go on about the beautiful setting, the competent camera work or the solid performance…but the simple truth is, this is really just about getting more clips of Adam with short hair into wider circulation.ng
A special album release listening party [presented by INSOUND and IMPOSE Magazine] for the upcoming GIRLS record, Album, and Times New Viking’s Born Again Revisited will be on Wednesday, September 16 at Bruar Falls (245 Grand Street) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn starting at 9pm. Both records come out on LP/CD/Digital on September 22nd. All attendees will receive a promo coupon from Insound for a special %discount on the pre-order! We’re very pleased to announce that GIRLS are getting in the van this coming November and hitting select cities all over the United States for their first-ever headlining U.S. Tour. They will not be riding in the bus pictured above (nor will they be accompanied by the above female companions) but these shows will be very special.
Additionally, beginning this Monday September 14th, you will be able to access a high-quality stream of “Album” on www.truepanther.com. This album was recorded in the home, the band’s first fans were in their shared home, and thus, we chose to premiere this record on the label’s virtual home, the True Panther Site. Hope you enjoy it.
As a special little cherry on top, an mp3 of the album version of “Lust For Life” is below – the shimmering mixed and mastered version that hasn’t quite replaced the original mix on these here internets. See you on the road America!

NYC’s venerable Roseland Ballroom’s been host to a number of historic rock shows over the years. Once, I saw a Slayer gig that featured almost a dozen women amongst the 4000 paying customers. On Friday, September 25, 2009, a new chapter in Roseland history will be written as Yo La Tengo headline their biggest hometown show to date, with support from Atlanta’s Black Lips and a lobby performance from Susquehanna Industrial Tool & Die Co.
Aside from the Yo La Tengo lineup of Ira, Georgia and James being augmented by additional strings on this evening, the staging and lighting will be a one-off presentation from Joshua White and Gary Panter. There’s talk of an MC, and while we can’t divulge any names, I am personally hoping and praying it is anyone other than this guy.
Tickets are available here. I realize the streets of NYC are safer than when I was living in Manhattan, but trust me, you don’t wanna be wandering around Hell’s Kitchen looking for a Yo La Tengo ticket the night of the show. For one thing, it might rain. For another, Yo La Tengo will not be playing their annual Hanukkah shows at Maxwell’s this December, so this is your last chance to see the band in the greater NY area this year.
Sonic Youth and Matador regret to announce that guitarist Lee Ranaldo has fractured his left wrist, requiring the band to reschedule their upcoming west coast tour to the following new dates:
Mon Jan 04 – Tucson, AZ – Rialto Theater
Tue Jan 05 – Phoenix, AZ – Marquee Theater
Thu Jan 07 – San Diego, CA – House of Blues
Fri Jan 08 – Pomona, CA – Fox Theater
Sat Jan 09 – Los Angeles, CA – The Wiltern
Tickets for the original dates will be honored. If necessary, refunds will be available at the point of purchase.
Two of the band’s planned fall appearances will NOT be rescheduled, however – September 26 in Santa Barbara and October 4 at The Austin City Limits Festival. Refunds for the Santa Barbara show will be available at the point of purchase.
Lee fractured his wrist while playing tennis, no minor injury for a guitarist, writer, and visual artist. Or a tennis player. Please join us in wishing him a quick and thorough recovery.

A little under a year ago Fucked Up took over the Rogan Store here in New York for that epic 12-hour show. Tomorrow, Cold Cave is set to perform in that very space as part of a special, free event put on by the folks at Rogan. Will there be another John Joseph cameo this year? Hey, you never know…
ROGAN and The Smile along with Bowery district neighbors join forces to bring the party downtown with THE ROGAN LINEUP – an eclectic collective of events from 6pm-12am and perhaps even later.
The ROGAN Bouwerie shop, which formerly housed the Bouwerie Lane Theatre, will reach back into its theatrical roots and set the stage for the ROGAN LINEUP – a celebration of fashion, music and film.
FASHION: ROGAN opens its doors to designers Matohu, Risto, Ajna, daraGOY and Salvor.
MUSIC: ROGAN invites some of New York’s best noisemakers to perform on the mezzanine. The lineup for the night will include hourly guest DJ sets and a live performance by minimal, industrial synth-pop band, COLD CAVE.
FILM: A screening of rarely-seen footage shot by Albert Maysles including Little Edie, Sharon Tate, Ringo Starr and more. Also, photographic episodes by Anna Gaskell and film shorts from thought provoking artists. We will also be selling 12 limited edition ROGAN customized Fashion’s Night Out t-shirts
The Rogan Bouwerie Shop is located at 330 Bowery (@Bond St.) in NYC.
If you’re looking for a weekend fest roughly three weeks after Goner 6 and a week before Budget Rock 8, you could do worse than the above event. It could the greatest car-company sponsored event of all-time (though admittedly, I would struggle to name the 2nd and 3rd place finishers).
Because just when we thought you couldn’t go and get any better, you go ahead and do something totally awesome like making this killer Yo La Tengo window display to celebrate today’s release of “Popular Songs.”
So if you find yourself in Bloomington, Indiana and you happen to pass by Landlocked Music be sure to stop in and tell them that we love them… very, very much.
The second MP3 from Kurt Vile’s upcoming album Childish Prodigy is the dark and intense “Hunchback.” Not to be confused with other versions of the song floating around, “Hunchback” opens the record, and is a definite departure from the beginning of the last album, the ebullient “Freeway.” Check it out, and if you haven’t already gotten it, also take a listen to Overnite Religion which we put out a couple months ago. If you like what you hear, go and preorder the album, in stores on October 6, and get a free copy of the 7″ “He’s All Right.”
Kurt will be on tour from early October through early November, as per below. Stay tuned for European dates to be announced shortly.

In the immortal words of Bob Barker, I wish I had a refrigerator for every one of you. In lieu of such gifts, however, there’s a drawing at next week’s TNV listening party for the brand new, out-today “Move To California” 4-song 7″. ‘Born Again Revisited’ is available 9/22 on LP/CD and digital formats, but you can preorder here.

AMERICANS
On this lovely Labor Day, shortly bound for the excellent West Indian Day Carnival, we stand before you- stoked. The next few weeks are going to be all about GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS at True Panther HQ. NY Times totally nailed it in their review yesterday, people are “getting it”. At great risk of continuing to be hyperbolic- something very special is happening.
As a big thank you to the special city by the bay we’d like to declare the week of September 14th GIRLS WEEK (proposals for more creative names accepted) in San Francisco. To send some love back to the wonderful music fans and retailers that have been so supportive of the band from its inception, “Album”, will be available in local independent stores, one week before anywhere else. Starting 9/15, Bay Areans can walk into their local Amoeba, Aquarius, Rasputin, Streetlight, etc. and pick up a copy of the album the New York Times called “devastatingly fresh” and declared one of the year’s best. If you’re not in SF don’t worry, “Album” will be available everywhere beginning 9/22.
Additionally, the band will be celebrating this early release with a free in-store performance at the San Francisco Amoeba records Tuesday 9/15 at 6pm. Come one come all! Bring your friends your family, let’s share this together! Pick up a copy of the record before anyone else, play it over and over so much that the grooves are worn out by the nationwide September 22nd release date!
This week the band are also going on a short trip through California with their friend Cass Mccombs. These shows will be their last American appearances before embarking on their first full-on European tour.
As we near the one-year anniversary of Fucked Up’s The Chemisty of Common Life & the insanity that was the 12 hour show, we’re very pleased to announce some exciting Fucked Up news.
On Thursday, November 5, the band will be performing The Chemistry of Common Life live and in its entirety at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. Joining Fucked Up will be some very special guests performing onstage so as to fully recreate all the sounds on the album.
Ticketing information and further details to follow next week.
If you’re in the LA area this Labor Day Weekend, be sure to catch Fucked Up tomorrow at the F Yeah Fest along with Cold Cave, Times New Viking and Kurt Vile.
The band will also be playing Portland’s Wonder Ballroom on Saturday, September 19.
And let’s not forget to mention the Fucked Up double LP / double CD compilation, Couple Tracks: Singles 2001 – 2009, slated for an early 2010 release. Keep it here for more.

Austin, TX trio Harlem spent much of August hard at work on their forthcoming 2nd album (and Matador debut) at Costa Mesa, CA’s Distillery. Though they’ve returned to said studio for additional work, Coomers, Curtis and Jose will be hitting the road again very shortly. Despite how we’re prevented from sharing any of the new Harlem songs with you at this early stage, the band have carefully documented the recording process and their recent travels thru a series of explicit snapshots at their MySpace page.

We are letting the secret slip early, right here…. Matador Records, Brooklyn Vegan, and Other Music are proud to announce that we are combining forces to celebrate the new album Popular Songs on the date of release, next Tuesday, September 8th here in New York City. The event will be held at D’amelio Terras Gallery (located at 525 W. 22nd St) from 7-930 pm, however, get there EARLY, as the first hour will be an album signing by the band (yes, Ira, James, and Georgia will be in attendance), and the album artist (and gallery owner) Dario Robleto. Other Music will be set up at the gallery to sell you your personal copy of the new album (while you hear it) on the day of release! Goodies will be raffled like: Popular Songs LPs, autographed tour posters, and concert tickets to their upcoming New York headlining show at ROSELAND BALLROOM.
The office feels a little empty now that Popular Songs is shipping to Buy Early Get Now participants. It seems like only yesterday, Popular Songs was a just a BEGN preorder, full of promise. Today, the 2nd bonus mp3 is up for download, a demo version of “Periodically Double or Triple,” in mp3 and FLAC formats. Before you know it the album will be on your doorstep, in your hands, real. They grow up so fast…
