Coming May 25 : Kurt Vile’s “Square Shells” EP
By Gerard on Wednesday, April 14th, 2010Kurt Vile & The Violators are currently working on an autumn 2010 followup to last year’s tremendous ‘Childish Prodigy’ with producer John Agnello, and while early signs are Kurt’s got a monster of a new album in the works, let’s address the gap between albums with a new 12″/digital EP of post-’Prodigy’ recordings, ‘Square Shells’ hitting stores on May 25. We’ve made a bit of racket over the past year about Vile being one of the more important figures in American music and while we love aggressive hyperbole as much as the next record label (especially when you agree with us), 2010 is shaping up to be a year in which Kurt’s versatility as a singer-songwriter will be undeniable. It’s hard for us to think of an artist who’s been equally in his element sharing a stage with Big Star as he was doing the same with Fucked Up, and at the risk of really clobbering you over the head about our depth of feeling for this artist, we’re thoroughly convinced his songs and performances are gonna be remembered long after considerations of genre & circuit have been forgotten.
Here’s a taste in the form of “Invisibility : Nonexistent” ;

Yo La Tengo, Live At Claremont, CA’s Rhino Records This Saturday
By Gerard on Monday, April 12th, 2010My personal Record Store Day nightmare involves sleeping thru an 8am wake up call and by the time I show up at my favorite record shop, all the cool shit is gone and all that’s left is the limited (but not limited enough) Godsmack 7″.
So with that in mind, we’re encouraging you to get plenty of sleep Friday night, especially those of you in or near Claremont, California. On Saturday —- the day before playing Coachella — Yo La Tengo will be playing Rhino Records at 3pm. The last time I visited this establishment, I found one of these, so you might wanna turn up early. Unless you’re into Godsmack, in which case I reckon you can take your time.

Delorean DJ set on Radio K tonight at 9:00PM EDT/8:00PM CDT
By Hector on Thursday, April 8th, 2010
If you party, and who among us doesn’t party, then you can answer the question “do you party?” by tuning in to Do You Party?, the dance music show that graces the airwaves of Minneapolis institution Radio K. Barcelona’s Delorean paid them a visit during a recent stop in the Twin Cities, and the resulting DJ set can be heard tonight at 9:00PM EDT / 8:00PM CDT. Party people in Minneapolis can listen on the usual baffling array of frequencies (104.5 FM [Minneapolis-St. Paul], 100.7 FM [St. Paul], 106.5 FM [Minneapolis] & 770 AM [Metro area]), and people who like their party a little less complicated can click here to listen online.
Fucked Up’s Damian Abraham participating in “Keep Toronto Reading Festival” and “Do The Math”
By Robby on Thursday, April 8th, 2010
Fucked Up‘s frontman, Pink Eyes/Damian Abraham is taking advantage of a brief break from tour to participate in two community-based events.
Tonight (April 8), at the Toronto Reference Library, as part of Keep Toronto Reading Festival 2010: Book Exchange. Damian will speak on a panel with Pasha Malla author of The Withdrawal Method and Zoe Wittall author of Holding Still for as Long as Possible , wherein each panelist will bring his or her favorite books to discuss and exchange with audience members in an effort to promote literacy as well as what’s bound to be some pretty great reading.
April 8,
Doors at 6:00; event ends around 8:30
Appel Salon, 2nd floor

Meanwhile, Damian is involved in a program called Do The Math, run by a food program called The Stop — an initiative seeking to demonstrate the limits of social assistance. Damian will be subsisting solely off a standard food hamper provided by a local food bank for as long as possible.

In the program’s words:
On April 6, 2010, ten high-profile Torontonians (and their families, if they’re joining them) will pick up a standard food bank hamper at The Stop. These hampers—which include an array of non-perishable food, as well as a little bit of fresh produce—typically last a person three or four days, though many folks stretch this to a week or ten days. Our participants will live exclusively off the contents of the hamper for as long as they can. They will not eat out or accept free food or drink (though they are encouraged to eat at least two meals at a drop-in). They will be allowed to use up to five standard pantry ingredients—oil, flour, salt, coffee, etc.—but are asked to keep track of the quantity of these items used.
You can follow Damian’s experience and progress and find plenty of detailed information over at Looking For Gold , his twitter and Do The Math’s website.
Right on, Damian!

Harlem ‘Hippies’ hits stores TODAY!
By Robby on Tuesday, April 6th, 2010
photo grabbed from Pooneh Ghana‘s flickr
A lot has happened since we met Harlem a few years ago. They’ve written 16 indelible pop songs, played shows across the nation, contributed to a compilation celebrating the one of the better music scenes going right now and beat us in a couple rounds of cee-lo… and in the midst of all that and more, they let us release a damn fine LP that we couldn’t be more enthusiastic to yell, “drops today!”
You can grab ‘Hippies’ at many fine music retail outlets including your local record shop, favorite digital retailer (such as Amazon, emusic or iTunes) and Matador’s online store.
And the fun’s just getting started – Harlem plays a release show at Waterloo Records in Austin on April 11, Lollapalooza in August and a ton of other dates in between.

Litigation Corner : Purveyors Of Taurine, Ginko, High N-R-G Vs. Fucked Up
By Gerard on Thursday, April 1st, 2010We try not to make a habit of lifting material from Fucked Up’s ‘Looking For Gold’ blog, but in this instance, there’s something far too chilling to ignore. What happens when a thoughtful take on the economics of a major rock biz trade fair result in an allegedly altruistic sponsor seeking to quash an artist’s right to free expression? Sadly, something like this.
