UPDATE: We’ve put on our charity hat and will now be holding this event as a benefit for the victims of the recent flooding in Nashville. If you plan on attending Harlem’s free instore next Thursday May 13 please bring donations, non-perishable food items, spare clothing, whatever you’ve got. The wonderful staff at Grimey’s will be handling the intake of all donations with food donations going to Second Harvest Food Bank and monetary donations going to Hands On Nashville. Thank you.
The New Pornographers performed “Crash Years” on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon yesterday. Neko Case takes the lead vocal and yes, that’s Todd Barry playing the sleigh bell. Dan Bejar was also in the house, and it’s a straight-up loose, joyous performance of a kind rarely seen on broadcast TV. And some serious rock cello moves.
Matador Records is not responsible for any drumstick injuries that may or may not have occurred.
(above : an overflow crowd for Ted Leo’s 2003 Siren performance)
Our friends at the Village Voice confirmed earlier today that Ted Leo & The Pharmacists and Harlem would each be part of this year’s 10th Anniversary Siren Festival. It’s happening Saturday, July 17 at beautiful Coney Island, Brooklyn, and while I’m sure the organizers need no advice from me concerning security, I do hope everyone is aware under no circumstances should this gentleman be allowed anywhere near a microphone.
Track A2 from the forthcoming‘Life Magazine 12″‘, featuring the remixes we’ve already told you about, is brought to you by the DJ duo (featuring, for those who’ve done their homework, a celebrated Matador alumnus) Optimo. Having just closed the doors on their legendary club night in Glasgow, JD Twitch and JG Wilkes have focused their efforts to their essential mixes, live appearances and remixes as awesome as this mutation of Cold Cave’s “Life Magazine”.
Don’t forget, this Friday (May 7), Cold Cave play a ton of dates in the UK and Europe with their first stop at All Tomorrow’s Parties this weekend.

We don’t make a habit of linking to each piece of media coverage our bands receive because much of it is press-release-regurgitation-city. Every now and then however, there’s something special that we just have to share, and when the Des Moines Register headlines an article, “Prairie Meadows race worker goes back to his life as rock star”, it’s a sure bet (sorry) we’re talking about an all-too rare profile of Pavement’s Bob Nastanovich.
Today sees the anticipated release of the New Pornographers’ fine fifth album Together. Buy it here.
In celebration of the album’s release, Spinner today debuts the first video from Together, for first MP3 “Your Hands (Together)”. The video was directed by Pornographer Blaine Thurier, and totally kicks ass (I apologize):
The band will appear on NBC’s Late Night With Jimmy Fallon tomorrow night, and play a very special show in Woodstock, NY on Thursday (tickets).
Finally, the band will hit the road sooner than you think. Breath it in:

Given recent events in middle Tennessee, it might seem a bit optimistic (or even insensitive) for a NYC based record label to simply pretend it’s business-as-usual in promoland. But we’ve long fostered an optimistic outlook (tinged with insensitivity), and heck knows we’re hoping there’s enough normalcy in Nashville in 9 days that Harlem’s visit can be appreciated properly. Coomers, Curtis and Jose will be playing Grimey’s at 6pm, hours before their show at The End, and need we remind you the record store in question was recently hailed by sources as disparate as Spin Magazine and Fucked Up as one of the nation’s finest.
(video from Shearwater’s session for Radio K at SXSW)
Listeners to Salt Lake City’s KRCL can wake up this morning to the sounds of Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg at 9:00AM MDT. Jonathan will be playing a solo set and spinning some songs he was listening to during the recording of Shearwater’s new album, The Golden Archipelago (which, by the way, can be had for a rainbow of reasonable prices at our online store). Salt Lake City can tune in at 90.9FM, other places can listen online at krcl.org.
I thought I’d posted about Marcella Hazan‘s pasta with tuna before, but apparently I haven’t. It’s very simple indeed and requires the best ingredients – imported Italian tuna in olive oil, superb olive oil of your own, San Marzana tomatoes and good butter:
4 tbs extra virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp garlic chopped very fine
1 1/2 cups canned San Marzano tomatoes, cut up, with their juice
12 ounces imported Italian tuna packed in olive oil
Salt
Black pepper ground fresh from the mill
1 tbs butter
1 1 1/2 pounds pasta
3 tbs chopped parsley
In a saucepan heat the olive oil, add the garlic and cook until it becomes colored a pale yellow. Add the cut up tomatoes with their juice, stir to coat them well, and cook at a gentle but steady simmer for 25 minutes, or until the tomatoes float free of their juices.
Drain the tuna and crumble it thoroughly with a fork. Turn off the heat under the tomatoes, add the tuna, and mix well. Taste, and if necessary, correct for salt. Add a few grindings of pepper, the 1 tbs of butter, and mix well again. Toss with drained cooked pasta with a few more drops of olive oil. Add the chopped parsley, toss again, and serve immediately.
This is great so far as it goes, and it absolutely requires the best ingredients. But what if you don’t have those around – you just have Chicken of the Sea, your olive oil is a few months old, or you feel like you need something with a bit more kick?
The following changes retain the spirit of the recipe but make it more complex and, to my mind, more satisfying:
- Chop 1 jalapeno finely along with 8 sage leaves, and sauté these along with the garlic
- Discard the tomato juice in the can, and using your hands, squeeze most of the juice out of each of the tomatoes
The result is highly concentrated. I recommend spaghetti for this dish.
By the way, don’t forget the butter at the end. It’s essential for knitting the flavors together. I use Lurpak or President.
