eMusic Wants To Send You To Matador’s 21st Birthday Party In Vegas

By Gerard on Thursday, August 26th, 2010

But only two of you.  Contest details are here, but the gist of it is pretty simple.  Our friends at eMusic are giving away two tickets to The Lost Weekend at The Palms, plus they’re springing for flights and hotel rooms. Gambling losses and legal fees are YOUR problem!

I know we keep promising more hard info about the actual event, and guess what…I’m doing it again.   Next week we’ll be confirming 4 additional bands, as well as providing further details about the weekend’s schedule.  Your patience is deeply appreciated, and if you have further questions, by all means, send ‘em to 21@matadorrecords.com

Happy to share this new video for “Superball” directed by Jack Ferry. Evokes some simple classic vids, faces, instruments, soft-focus lights…eternally into it.

Thank You Memphis

By truepanthersounds on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Tonight’s Magic Kids show at the Levitt Bandshell was really really special. Thank you to the hundreds of people that came out, the Memphis Youth Symphony who helped realize the ambition of the band’s arrangements, Goner Records for selling (and selling out of) the album, and of course Magic Kids. The city of Memphis is truly a strange and wonderful place and I can’t think of a more strange and wonderful tribute than tonight. Really bowled over.

Also really excited about the response people have been having to the record. Reviews are trickling in little by little but so far so good. Prefix assigned it one of the top 3 scores they’ve given any record so far this year. Thank you. A few nice selections below….

PREFIX- “A truly ineffable pop album. The Magic Kids are going at your heart with every melodic tool in their arsenal — shouts and synths, strings and sugary production — all in an effort to make your summer (or fall, or winter, or old age) that much better.”

Washington Post- “more than a simple exercise in retro charm … a fully realized and immaculately executed pop vision.”

One Thirty BPM- “Memphis is a little record that sounds massive ….Memphis is a truly lovely album, one that can transport even the most cynical of grizzled old folks back to the glory days of their youth, and a very promising start to a band’s career.”

Lincoln Journal Star- “”Magic Kids have created some magical, gorgeous classic pop here, one of the most pleasant and engaging surprises I’ve heard in months.”

Magic Kids Memphis out NOW (Cassette + Symphony + Dates)

By truepanthersounds on Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Magic Kids’ pop-odyssey MEMPHIS hits the streets today. We’re celebrating the occasion on a few fronts. For those of you all over the world, we pressed up a very limited edition surprise version of the album on Cassette. It’s limited to 250 copies to be sold at a few future shows, but for the time being, you can purchase the tape (along with CD/LP) until it runs out on the True Panther and Matador stores. Get an instant mp3 download of the record with order as well.

Order CD/LP/Tape/DA HERE

For those of you in Memphis, the band are celebrating the album’s release with a really special one-time performance alongside the Memphis Youth Symphony. Memphis is flipping out about the event, a benefit for MYS and a special way for the band to capture the more baroque elements of the record in a way that’s difficult to on the road.  You can read about it here, here and here. Supposedly the Levitt Shell is where Elvis played some of his first shows. YES!

For those of you in the rest of the country, the band are embarking on basically a 3-month world tour that starts out with a tour of Southern independent record stores, TOMORROW. Can’t stop wont stop.

The New Pornos on ABC’s “Amplified” from Lollapalooza

By Nils on Monday, August 23rd, 2010

We love “Amplified“, ABC News’s online music show with World News Sunday anchor Dan Harris.  Smart, candid interviews with good bands, juiced up with lotsa good music and video. Dan delayed his current Iraq trip (apparently Iraqis say “hello” – in English – to mean “goodbye” – and no one knows why) to yap with AC Newman and Kathryn Calder at Lollapalooza.  There are at least two things that even I didn’t know in this interview.

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists – “Bottled In Cork” video surprise on Funny Or Die

By Gabe on Monday, August 23rd, 2010

On Friday, Ted Leo checked in with a lengthy, illuminating instant-classic of a blog post. In it, our fearless leader looked back on the past, evaluated his present and pondered an evolving future…which, he revealed, would include the second Lookout Records alumni foray into the theeee-a-thah.

We think he must have been talking about this:

Is that Paul F. Tompkins? Julie Klaussner? John Hodgman? Patrick from Titus?? Terre fucking T???

Director Tom Scharpling and co outdid themselves, to be sure.

Ted Leo and The Pharmacists’ new album The Brutalist Bricks is available for purchase here.

Girls to headline Fillmore in SF 10/15

By truepanthersounds on Friday, August 20th, 2010

Girls(photo from Robbix‘ Flickr)

October 15, 2010 Girls will be playing their biggest show yet in San Francisco- at the legendary Fillmore. Growing up in SF it sometimes seemed the closest a local band could get to the Fillmore’s stage was a matinee show of The Other Ones (they are from Marin anyways!) so we couldn’t be more excited for this. Show them some love San Francisco!

Esben and the Witch Sign To Matador, Confirm New EP, First US Tour

By Gerard on Thursday, August 19th, 2010

(Left to Right: Rachel Davies, Daniel Copeman, Thomas Fisher. Photo by Adam Kola)

It’s with considerable excitement that we’re able to reveal the addition of the Brighton trio Esben and the Witch to the Matador roster.  Our first UK based signing in over 6 years, a pair of the band’s recordings — the self released ’33′ and the Too Pure Singles Club-issued 7″, “Lucia, at the Precipice” (the latter already trading for excessive sums on eBay) generated no small amount of global curiosity (not the least of which coming from our offices). Hailed by The Quietus for their “opulent mixture of brooding electronics, crackling guitars and mythological rhetoric”, though Esben and the Witch’s early work is equally brooding and beautiful, we’re pretty confident Rachel, Daniel and Thomas had only skimmed the surface of what they’re capable of.  Their debut Matador EP, the limited 12″, ‘Marching Song’, is scheduled for release on October 11th (October 12 in North America), augmented by two new songs, ‘Done Because We Are Too Menny’ and ‘Souvenirs’.  The band’s first full length album is tentatively scheduled for release in early 2011.

The accompanying video for ‘Marching Song’ was directed by David Procter and Peter King from the The Agenda Collective.

Esben and the Witch will make their US debut this September touring in support of Mercury Prize nominees Foals along with participating in Matador At 21 : The Lost Weekend  in Las Vegas.  A subsequent UK tour will begin in November.

Glasser- Home (mp3) from Ring

By truepanthersounds on Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Glasser’s Ring is arriving in our hands September 28th but for now, here is the first taste of Ring entitled “Home”. The song remains in line with the Glasser we’ve heard before, eclectic and beat-driven with instrumental melodies often driven by Cameron’s own voice. But there is a depth to both the arrangement and recording which somehow makes the song simultaneously intimate and explosive.

Magic Kids to perform with the Memphis Youth Symphony – “Memphis” live in Memphis!

By Gabe on Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Next Tuesday August 24th, to celebrate the release of Magic Kids’ debut album Memphis, the band will perform selections from the album live with the Memphis Youth Symphony at the legendary Levitt Shell in, you guessed it, Memphis. We’re told Elvis played his first show at the Levitt Shell (but we can’t remember who told us).

This is Memphis the way it was meant to be heard (and you can hear it how it actually sounds at the band’s MySpace where the album is streaming).

Admission to the concert is $5, all of which goes directly to the Memphis Youth Symphony Program. Doors are at 6:30, and the show starts at 7:30.

Pre-order Memphis here.

Most Assuredly Not A Matador At 21 : The Lost Weekend Update

By Gerard on Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

We’ll be announcing a couple of additions to the lineup for Oct. 1-3 very soon.  In the meantime, however, the above photograph of Matador’s Chris Lombardi, shown basking in the Palms’ Hardwood Suite, provides just a hint of what’s in store for those lucky enough to attend this sold-out event.  Not shown : Tim Donaghy.

Matador’s Natalie Judge Named One Of Billboard’s Young Execs On The Rise

By Gerard on Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Congrats to our our London-based label manager Natalie Judge, on being named one of Billboard Magazine’s “30 Under 30″.  Said list “recognizes rising young executives who are driving our business forward with their artistic and business vision”, and along with recognizes Natalie’s work on behalf of Sonic Youth and Fucked Up, Billboard adds, somewhat ominously, that said list included “Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, then 23, in 2007.”  While this might not mean we’re 3 years away from a David Fincher movie about Judge being sued by half the universe (though if we are, I’d like to be played by Fred “The Hammer” Williamson), it does point to the rarefied nature of said acknowledgment. This sort of thing doesn’t happen to the people we like and respect nearly often enough, so an occasion like this, we’ll raise a glass in Natalie’s honor and consider ourselves very lucky she’s making stuff happen for us instead of someone else.

Belle & Sebastian – Write About Love LP/CD/digital album, Coming October 12

By Stuart Murdoch on Monday, August 16th, 2010

So…

We got together last week with a few gallant lads and lassies, and we recorded the first part of the B&S TV show that we’ve been hinting at. Here’s a clip to get you in the mood. The song is from the new record, and it’s called “I Want The World To Stop”

We had a really nice day that day, thanks to everyone who travelled a variety of distances to be there! London, Manchester, Newcastle, etc, it was a good effort.

And while I’m at it, here’s a look at the real cover of “Belle And Sebastian Write About Love”. Some websites got hold of the wrong end of the stick last week (perhaps not suprisingly), but no harm done!

She’s starting it out this Friday at Glasslands, and afterwards touring the midwest and East Coast with Gayngs! Also, look above…that’s the upcoming cover of FADER. AAAH! It’s real, not one of those novelty photobooth fake covers you make with your family to at amusement parks. ITS REALLY HAPPENING!

Shearwater on KUT Austin tonight at 9:00PM EDT/8:00PM CDT

By Hector on Thursday, August 12th, 2010

(photo taken from coldengrey‘s Flickr)

Last month, an audience of lucky Austinites was witness to a live performance of favorites both new and old by Shearwater in the Austin City Limits studio, part of the “KUT Live” series sponsored by, you guessed it, Austin’s own KUT. Those both in and out of Austin who missed out at the time can hear the performance when KUT broadcasts it tonight at 9:00PM EDT/8:00PM CDT. KUT is located at 90.5 on your Austin radio dial, and if this whole Internet thing has caught your fancy then you can also listen online in a variety of ways. Sadly, you will have to just imagine the snazzy Texas Capitol Building backdrop, as seen above.

Harlem – September US Shows

By Gerard on Friday, August 6th, 2010

After a summer playing the enormodomes of America with the Dead Weather, Harlem follow a pair of Chicago shows this weekend (Sat. afternoon at Lollapalooza, Saturday evening at the Empty Bottle) with a mix of headlining and festival dates this September.  Our attempts to classify ‘Hippies’ as “the party record of the summer” have been slightly stymied by the album’s spring release date, but do you really wanna be exercising seasonal discrimination during a new era of openness and understanding?

Magic Kids “Superball” (mp3) + More Tour Dates

By truepanthersounds on Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. Magic Kids are serious about the craft and composition of rock music. Superball, off of their debut record Memphis out 8/24, demonstrates this incredibly. Using the tools they sharpened in their old D.I.Y. bands, The Barbaras and Girls of the Gravitron, they set out to do something classic: take the simple and skeletal structures of rock and garage songs and build into pop epics. The horns, strings and synths are not trim or embellishments but crucial components of their unique compositions. You may have heard an early demo of this song on the 7″ split with the Smith Westerns but this is the version that defines it. We hope you find it as immediate and enthralling as we do.

Magic kids also have more new tour dates that will take them across the country with their neighbor and friend, Bosco Delrey. Memphis isn’t about mourning an era of music that is gone, rather, adding another chapter to the story and Bosco is a perfect companion for this mission. MEMPHIS EVERYWHERE!

Perfume Genius to play select dates in September/October

By Patrick on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

“Perfume Genius’s debut album ‘Learning’ is a bruised and suggestive affair; one of catharsis and rare, redemptive beauty, which ranks as one of the most uniquely endearing and quietly forceful debut albums of recent years.” –Drowned In Sound

Perfume Genius, the alias of Seattle songwriter Mike Hadreas, will be making eight rare live appearances this fall.  His debut album “Learning” (Matador) was released in June and has been quietly accumulating a fanatical audience.  The album puts harrowing personal stories to unshakable minor-key melodies that prove oddly hopeful despite the dark, painful tone.  Recorded in his mother’s suburban home during a time of emotional and physical recovery, these gorgeous songs are as unaffected and memorable as you’re likely to hear all year.

Hadreas rarely plays live; as the New York Times noted, “memory is etched on the body…Hadreas squeezes out the words when singing, his neck tense, his muscles taut. It must hurt.”  These shows will feature Hadreas and Alan Wyffels on just piano and vocals, with occasional guitar.  For a glimpse of what to expect, check out the live video session here:
