Matador At 21 : The Lost Weekend In Las Vegas, Webcast via MySpace Music

By Gerard on Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

The majority of this weekend’s sets from the Pearl will be part of a live video/audio stream presented by MySpace Music starting Friday evening.  Though the lineup for the webcast is subject to change, we can confirm that although they’re not included on MySpace’s currently published schedule, Sonic Youth and Cat Power are both participating. Apparently it’s gonna be viewable on iPhones and iPads as well, which should lead to a complete breakdown of socially acceptable behavior in homes and businesses across the world this weekend.

This event is sponsored by MySpace Music, Altamont, Incase, Sailor Jerry and Yowie.

One More Schedule Change For Matador At 21; Harlem & Dead Meadow Playing Late Friday, Saturday Repsectively

By Gerard on Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Harlem (above, left) are playing the Palms Ballroom Friday after Fucked Up vs. Ted Leo & The Pharmacists ; Dead Meadow (right) are playing the same room late Saturday after Esben and the Witch and Cold Cave. We’re NO LONGER featuring a Saturday afternoon Harlem/Dead Meadow matinee.

It’s a long story but we came to the conclusion a 1:30pm start time on Saturday was a bad bad bad deal for the participants and everyone who’d been rocking Friday night combined. Our apologies for any inconvenience. Also, the event is now officially totally sold sold.

Magic Kids “Candy” for Yours Truly

By truepanthersounds on Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Magic Kids were in the Bay Area for the first time. They played Valentines Day with Girls and Smith Westerns the night before and it was a beautiful show. The next day they cobbled together this orchestra, which features Christopher + Garrett from Girls, Max from Smith Westerns, some friends of someone’s aunt who had a weekend flute club, a real string section and some more random friends to play this early version of Candy for the Yours Truly guys. It was kind of a rainy day but it felt so warm in that room. Hope you enjoy. Video is hosted HERE on your’s truly’s site which also has a nice letter from the band.

The band is leaving for Europe this week and coming back for a tour of the states. Tour dates HERE

Matador At 21 : Your Last Crack (We Hope) At Tickets

By Gerard on Monday, September 27th, 2010

As of this writing, there’s a handful of tickets remaining for this weekend’s festivities at the Palms ; late Friday we determined a portion of seats we’d previously reserved for artists, families and friends could be make available to the public. Now that we’ve pestered those who came up short in the last lottery, there’s still a few left (appox. 30 pairs). These tickets are marked as “preferred seating” and do not include access to the VIP opening party on Friday, or any of the afterparties in the Hardwood Suite — sorry, but we’re at capacity for those events.

NEW FAQ – Matador at 21: The Lost Weekend

By Patrick on Sunday, September 26th, 2010

The Mona Lisa of Las Vegas

Below is the new FAQ for Matador at 21: The Lost Weekend, Las Vegas, Oct 1-3, 2010.

(This replaces the old FAQ, which was mostly about how to buy tickets and get rooms.)

MATADOR AT 21 FAQ

1. Where is the Palms?

The Palms Casino Resort main entrance is at 4321 West Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, about one mile West of the Strip:

The Palms consists of three towers – two of them quite close together in the casino, the Palms Tower and the Fantasy Tower. Both the PEARL THEATER and the PALMS BALLROOM are located in this area, along with most of the bars and restaurants.

The third tower is called Palms Place is and linked to the rest of the resort by a long corridor with moving sidewalks. It also has a separate entrance, parking garage and check-in desk. The address is 4831 West Flamingo Road, about one-quarter mile West in the same building.

Refer to following casino diagram as you read the rest of the FAQ:

(Please note that the top of the casino diagram is South. Click on image for larger version)

2. Where do I pick up my wristbands?

Pick up your wristbands at the PALMS BALLROOM (refer to diagram above). This is accessible through the Palms Tower entrance to the resort – the main entrance. Go STRAIGHT AHEAD through the slot machines, bearing right past the island bar, towards the entrance to the Pearl Theater. The two elevators to the ballroom are directly to the RIGHT of the entrance to the Pearl. If there is a line at the elevators, there is a staircase up (one story) to the ballroom, located directly to the LEFT of the entrance to the Pearl. There will be signs posted.

Make sure to have the credit card that you used to pay for your tickets AND a photo ID with you.

Note: People who purchased VIP tickets will get tickets (with their assigned seat numbers) as well as wristbands. People who purchased General Admission (GA) tickets will just get wristbands.

3. If I am staying at the Palms, where do I check into my room?

If you are staying in a Palms Tower or a Fantasy Tower room, you check in at the reception desk directly to the left of the Palms Tower entrance.

If you are staying in a Palms Place room, try to go directly from the airport to the Palms Place entrance. That entrance is at 4831 Flamingo Road, about a quarter mile further west on Flamingo. Cabs know where it is. Palms Place has its own reception desk, pool, restaurants, bars and facilities.

To get to Palms Place from the main part of the casino, walk to the very west end of the casino (i.e. head right after you enter), past the sports bar and the sportsbook, and look for signs for Palms Place. You will need to take an elevator up one floor and then take the moving sidewalks.

4. What is the schedule of bands?

The complete schedule of events is located HERE.

5. Where is the main show and where are my seats?

See map above: the mainstage shows are located at the PEARL THEATER which is situated in the main part of the casino. After you enter, you go DOWN one level (stairs or elevator) to reach the main portion of the Pearl.

If you bought a VIP ticket, you will have an assigned seat in one of the sections closest to the stage. The assigned seat will be on your ticket. Please show it to the usher.

If you bought a GA ticket, you have the choice of standing in the area directly in front of the stage (while capacity allows), or finding seats in the open areas. Both the standing area and the GA seats will be first-come first-served, each night. If you are sitting in the mezzanine or balcony, you may have to go up in the elevator or the stairs.

6. Are there in-and-out privileges for the shows?

Yes. You may leave and re-enter the PEARL THEATER (mainstage) shows at any time. Just show your wristband. Keep in mind that if you have a GA seat, you should have a friend keep it for you. If you were on the floor and it fills up to capacity during your absence, you may not be allowed back immediately, and will have to find a seat until there is room down there again. Or use a stadium pal.

7. Where are the afterparties and matinee shows?

Again, refer to the schedule located HERE. All the live band afterparties and matinees are located in the PALMS BALLROOM, which is where you collected your wristband (see answer to question #2).

The Karaoke Underground party on Saturday night is located at LITTLE BUDDHA, an Asian restaurant and lounge also located in the main part of the casino. It is quite close to the Pearl and the Ballroom. (See map of the casino above.)

The afterparties, the matinees and the karaoke are all first-come-first-served, and once the spaces fill up, we cannot admit anyone over capacity. The capacity of the Ballroom is approximately 600 people. In-and-out privileges will be observed so long as it is not over capacity.

8. What are the food and drink options?

There are bars located all through the PEARL THEATER, and bars will be available at both the PALMS BALLROOM parties and at LITTLE BUDDHA. The resort also has a food court and buffet, as well as multiple restaurants, bars and nightclubs. See the Palms site for more details.

Outside of the Palms there are innumerable food and drink options. Here are a few:

$$$ Piero’s – 1950s old-school red-sauce Italian joint where Vegas politicos hang out. One of the few original Vegas places left. Reservations required, and jackets for men (though this rule may not always be enforced). Be sure to request a table in the room with the bar. 355 Convention Center Drive, (702) 369-2305, pieroscuisine.com.

$$$ The Palm Steakhouse Las Vegas – The local branch of the famous steakhouse (absolutely no relation to the Palms Casino) is located at Caesar’s Palace on the Strip. Reservations recommended. 3500 Las Vegas Boulevard South (The Strip) in the Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace, (702) 732-7256, thepalm.com/Las-Vegas.

$ Lotus of Siam – One of the best Thai restaurants in the country. Be sure to tell them that you want Thai-level spicy, not dumbed down for Westerners. 953 East Sahara Ave., (702) 735-3033, no website. If it’s full, there are other restaurants in the large courtyard area where it is located, including a quite good Thai alternative.

$ In-N-Out Burger – Some people love it, some people love to hate it. We (mostly) love it, and can’t get it in the Northeast where we Matadorians come from. They’re all over Vegas, but the closest one is 4888 Dean Martin Drive, (800) 786-1000, in-n-out.com.

$ V Las Vegas Chinatown – Located about a mile north of the hotel is Las Vegas Chinatown, with tons of Asian restaurants, many with vegan options. Centered around Chinatown Plaza, located at 4255 Spring Mountain Road between Arville and Wynn, lvchinatown.com.

V Sunflower Markets – Vegas is not a great town for vegetarians and vegans, but this cheaper alternative to the Wholefoods grocery chain is also located closer to the Palms. 4020 S. Rainbow Blvd., (702) 876-4888, sfmarkets.com/sale-flyers/nevada.

V Wholefoods – If you prefer to go to an organic grocery you already know, then maybe you want Wholefoods anyway. The closest one is located pretty far south on the Strip, near the turnoff to the freeway to the airport. 6689 Las Vegas Blvd., (702) 589-7711, wholefoodsmarket.com.

9. Can I smoke at the shows?

No. You can smoke on the gaming floors, and in some of the bars, but not in the PEARL THEATER.

10. Is there a swagbag?

Every attendee will receive a Matador at 21 totebag. It will not be filled with tons and tons of goodies, but it does have one very special item in it.

11. What kind of T-shirts, records, CDs and other special items will be on sale?

Two record stores, Zia Records of Las Vegas, and Origami Records of Los Angeles, will be selling in the lobby of the PEARL THEATER all weekend. There will be two designs of Matador at 21 T-shirts, seven limited-edition Matador at 21 posters by different artists, the Matador at 21 charity 6-CD box set and low-priced vinyl double LP compilation, records and T-shirts by all the bands performing, as well as a special curated selection of vinyl of all kinds chosen by the bands who are playing.

12. I bought a VIP wristband. Where can I go?

As per the answer to question #5, you have been assigned seats in the front seated sections. In addition, you have access to the Opening Gala in the two-level Hardwood Suite, from 4-7 PM on Friday afternoon. This is the only hotel suite in the world with a professional indoor basketball court, fully stocked with balls, not to mention a professional locker room, scorepad, pool table and room to dance. Of course there is a full bar as well, a rotating loveseat inside a closed cylinder for ultimate privacy, and many nooks, corners and rooms to escape the sports (if you prefer). The Hardwood Suite will close down during showtimes at the Pearl, and reopen afterward from 1-5 AM on Friday and Saturday nights. (It will not be open Sunday night after the last band has played.) Bands and staff may be hanging here as well. The Hardwood Suite is located in the FANTASY TOWER.

Note: the Hardwood Suite is also first-come-first-served, and once the space fills up, we cannot admit anyone over capacity.

13. I’m staying at the Palms. What are check-in and check-out times?

4 PM check-in, 11 AM check-out.

14. What else is there to do?

Slot machines, blackjack, baccarat, poker, sportsbook, swimming pool, the Drift spa (located at Palms Place) plus four other salons, tons of bars and restaurants onsite, a movie theater on site, Pole Position go-kart racing right around the corner on South Arville St. featuring speeds up to 45 MPH. Then – a quick taxi ride to the Strip, a slightly longer taxi ride to downtown, both worth checking out. Outside the city there are many options, from hardcore automatic weapon firing ranges to serious hiking.

15. I’m from Las Vegas, and your dining and activities suggestions suck.

Please make additional suggestions in the comments thread below. The more the better.

16. Is there an ATM onsite?

Oh yes.

17. Can I take photos and video?

Any non-flash photos are fine. NO VIDEO IS ALLOWED.

18. Will the event be filmed?

Yes, the event will be filmed by multiple parties. By attending the event, you consent to have your likeness used used in a future promotional or commercial release.

19. Can I park onsite?

Free parking is available at both the Palms Tower and Palms Place entrances.

20. How do I get from the airport to the Palms?

There are airport shuttles which charge a fee. One is Bell Trans, which charges $7.50 (subject to change) – call (702) 739-7990 or (800) 274-7433. Taxis are easily available and cost roughly $25 including tip.

21. Are there child-care facilities at the Palms?

The Palms offers a Kids Quest child care center, which charges a fee.

22. Is there wi-fi at the Palms?

Tonight they open for Pavement in Central Park, and play with that band again in Atlanta on Sunday.

LISTEN TO RING

By truepanthersounds on Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Glasser‘s debut album Ring, is set to hit stores on 9/28. Something we haven’t spent much time talking about is how the album is loosely structured like the chiastic (or, Ring) structure used in ancient literature. Ideas are paired in symmetric order, often leading bidirectionally towards a certain concept. Songs are used to represent often contradictory emotional states.. So we wanted your first listen to it to reflect that. No set beginning or end, just dive into the album and go with it.

New Yorkers, Glasser made a special listening installation of the album. Go hang out at AVA Project in the East Village this weekend, bring a beer, and maybe a little pocket change because over the next three days, you can purchase a limited clear vinyl copy of the record at the space 2 weeks before release date (9/28).

Then Glasser is taking off for a string of tour dates with Gayngs, but starting it all off with a really special album release show at Amoeba in Los Angeles!

Sept 24 Los Angeles, CA @ Amoeba Hollywood (Record Release Show)
Sept 29

Sept 30 Chicago, IL @ Metro
Oct 2 Boston, MA @ Paradise

Delorean- Real Love Video

By truepanthersounds on Thursday, September 16th, 2010

A few months ago, when talking about the meaning behind the song “Real Love and possible ideas for a video Ekhi said something like “Real love is being in a state of conflict against the outside world”. Focus Creeps took this concept and ran with it, making a beautiful, dreamy and ultimately pretty psychedelic and creepy video for “Real Love”. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo’s 8 Nights Of Hanukkah at Maxwell’s ; Tickets On Sale Weds, 9/15

By Gerard on Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

As you’ve probably gleaned from the above headline, Yo La Tengo are once again going to mount an 8-night stand at Hoboken’s venerable Maxwell’s as part of the band’s (almost) annual Hanukkah celebrations.  Tickets for the December 1-8 shows go on sale September 15 at noon eastern time and are available from Ticketfly.  We don’t have any information to share concerning Yo La Tengo’s invited guests for this charitable endeavor, but if past Hanukkahs are anything to go by, it will probably be an embarrassment of riches.

The New Pornographers’ October 15 Concert Cancelled On Account Of AWESOME BAND NAME

By Gerard on Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

(above : where taking things way too literally meets no fun whatsoever)

The Grand Rapids Press’ John Serba reports The New Pornographers’ scheduled gig on October 15 at Calvin College has been scrapped.  Since the above headline already explains why, you might want to visit another website rather than continue reading.  Still here?  OK!

The college released a statement explaining, “after weeks of discussion and consideration, the irony of the band’s name was impossible to explain to many. The band’s name, to some, is mistakenly associated with pornography. Consequently, Calvin, to some, was mistakenly associated with pornography. Neither the college nor the band endorses pornography.”

Calvin student activities director Ken Heffner, who books concerts for the college, said refunds would be issued today, and that the cancellation is a “peaceful parting of ways” between the school and the band. The group was scheduled to perform Oct. 15 in the Calvin Fieldhouse Complex. The Calvin box office can be reached at 526-6282.

Keep in mind, this is (allegedly) an institution of higher learning devoted to the liberal arts. And with all due respect to Mr. Heffner and the Calvin board of trustees, decisions like this — or as I like to call ‘em, defacto censorship — can have a chilling effect on free expression.  Would Calvin College’s student activities board cancel an appearance by Cannibal Corpse, merely because neither they or the band endorse cannibalism?  Would Calvin turn down a chance to award Michigan treasure Doc Dart an honorary doctorate (thus making him “Doctor Doc Dart”) merely because Lansing’s great man of letters once fronted a band called The Crucifucks?

Probably, yes.  But that doesn’t make it any less sad and I suspect the entire Calvin College community are the poorer for it.

The New Pornographers, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists at Terminal 5, Dec. 6

By Gerard on Monday, September 13th, 2010

Double bills featuring two generation-defining acts don’t come along that often and when they do, you can’t risk missing such an occasion for fear of being labeled a cultural cretin. But enough about the Eddie Money/Lou Gramm cruise to the Bahamas,  The New Pornographers and Ted Leo & The Pharmacists are playing NYC’s Terminal 5 on Monday, December 6.  Presale for tickets starts tomorrow morning.

Matador at 21: 6-CD charity box set and double vinyl

By Patrick on Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

On September 28, on the eve of the label’s 21st anniversary celebration in Las Vegas, the Matador at 21 box set lands in stores. The limited-edition box contains five CDs documenting the history of the label with remastered songs released from 1989 through 2010, and one CD of unreleased live recordings from the Matador 10th Anniversary concerts in New York City in 1999. These were recorded to multitrack via the Rolling Stones Mobile Truck and not mixed down until now.

As shown above, the set comes in a blue-grey foil-stamped linen-bound box. The six CDs sit in custom digipaks. An 85-page perfect-bound book documents the history of the label with essays, photos, ephemera, emails and more. In addition, the box holds 36 custom Matador poker chips in three values.

The release has been assigned the catalog number OLE-1000, which is pushing it a little bit because we’re really only up to OLE-949 (the upcoming Kurt Vile 7″) in the main sequence. A budget-priced double vinyl set reproduces the contents of Disc 5, ‘Matador Today,’ and will be available on the same day as the box. All proceeds from the set will go to benefit three charities chosen by the label owners, enumerated at the bottom of this post. The artists have graciously agreed to donate their royalties as well in order to make this all possible.*

‘Belle and Sebastian Write About Love’- album details, pre-order and mp3

By Belle and Sebastian on Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

We are now less than 5 weeks away from the release of ‘Belle and Sebastian Write About Love’ – so no matter how much we’d like the album to be a huge Christmas Day style surprise for everyone on the day of release, the details will start appearing on your favourite online retailers soon and no doubt bits of the music will be permeating various media outlets.

So – first off here is the lead track – “Write About Love” - for everyone to listen to (or, if you are one of the first 20,000 visitors, to download). We sent it off to our Twitter follower @recordingtime yesterday – and she posted about it here

We hope you like it! Along with the rest of the album, it was recorded in Los Angeles earlier this year and produced by Tony Hoffer. It also features a guest vocal by Carey Mulligan. For those in the USA, the song is available on iTunes from today – if you are elsewhere, it won’t be released officially until after the album – 25th October in the UK.

If that is confusing, then things are a little more straightforward with the album! It comes out on the 12th October in the USA and Canada and the day before in the UK and most of the rest of the world -we’ll post any variations on these release dates nearer the time.

It is, of course, our third album for Rough Trade and was recorded in April and May at Sound Factory Studio B. Stuart wrote the majority of the songs and one (“Sunday’s Pretty Icons”) with Mick; Sarah wrote and takes lead vocal on “I Didn’t See It Coming” and “I Can See Your Future”; Stevie wrote and sings “I’m Not Living In The Real World”. The are also some guests – as well as the aforementioned Carey Mulligan, Norah Jones duets with Stuart on “Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John” and some orchestration is added by members of LA’s The Section Quartet.

pre order CD/LP via the Matador Store

The album will be available on CD, Gatefold Vinyl and digitally. The full track listing is:

I Didn’t See It Coming
Come On Sister
Calculating Bimbo
I Want The World To Stop
Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John
Write About Love
I’m Not Living In The Real World
Ghost of Rockschool
Read The Blessed Pages
I Can See Your Future
Sunday’s Pretty Icons

In addition, two bonus tracks, “Last Trip” and “Suicide Girl”, will be available as a 7 inch with the vinyl edition in most countries, and with all editions from selected retailers in the USA [including the Matador Store. Pre-order now.] A further song, “Blue Eyes of A Millionaire”, will be a bonus track with selected digital outlets. Full localised details of variations and pre-sales will all be added in due course.

Now Playing On MTV Canada : “Shearwater’s Guide To Austin”

By Gerard on Monday, September 6th, 2010

This week is amounting to what passes for the Thor Harris Media Blitz, what with Shearwater’s multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire being photographed in Sunday’s New York Times (as part of the newly configured Swans lineup), as well as assisting bandmate Jonathan Meiburg in giving MTV Canada’s Sharlene Chiu a guided tour of Austin, TX. OK,   The latter segment begins airing today, however you can watch a web version, just be advised the Shearwater segment doesn’t start until about 3 minutes and 56 seconds in, but if you wanna watch the members of Yeasayer eating lunch, well, there’s that, too!

Belle and Sebastian : ‘Write About Love’ TV Episode One, New Single, Twitter Contest

By Belle and Sebastian on Friday, September 3rd, 2010

TV SHOW

Today (3rd Sep) sees the launch of the first in a series of televisual transmissions of varying sizes and shapes from us to mark the impending release of our album, Belle and Sebastian Write About Love.

Available to view on the widget below, the first episode is a fully realised, half-hour mix of music, chat and revealing (and not so revealing) insights filmed in Glasgow over the last few weeks.

Presented by Dougie Anderson and produced by Forest of Black, it features  performances of two of the songs from the album: “I Want The World To Stop” and  “I Didn’t See It Coming”

As well as the performances, the show offers the chance to see us as both questioners (Stuart and Chris discuss DIY strategies with various Glasgow bands) and questioned (by fans in the studio). It sees us faced with the harsh realities of the changes in the music business since we last made a record but grappling with solutions and offering some insight into the processes involved in making the record.

In addition, the soundtrack also includes a mixture of snippets of B&S music (some previously heard, some not) set against a backdrop of Glasgow in it’s full autumnal glory. Other visuals come in the form of some of the photographs and videos submitted by you as part of the Write About Love competition.

Twitter / Write About Love

Aside from the songs in the TV show, we are releasing “Write About Love” as lead track /single.

It will initially be officially available from our website from the 7th of September for a very limited period to download – but we want to let one of our twitter followers have the track  for themselves – ahead of it being more widely available on iTunes and the like. It’s official digital release date in the USA is 7th September (iTunes Only) and in the UK not until the 25th October.

We will mail an mp3 of the song to a randomly selected follower on Monday (6th) and they will be the only person outside the band and those closest to them to hear/ own a digital copy of the song for 24 hours. It will be the winner’s choice what to do with it ahead of release. They can keep it to themselves in the knowledge that no-one else has it; share it with their friends; hold a listening party at their home or they could let the world either hear it or hear all about it online (and see if we get upset in the process!) – the choice is entirely theirs. . . .

To put yourself in the frame to receive your own copy of “Write About Love” on Monday, here’s what you have to do:

If you haven’t already done so, sign up to follow us on twitter @bellesglasgow and then post one 140 character message using the hashtag #writeaboutlove. The content of the message is entirely up to you: it could be to share the TV show with your followers, or be more generally about the band or the album – it is up to you.

As well as mailing the track to the winner immediately, the winner will also receive a finished copy of the album on vinyl and CD before its release and some other assorted B&S goodness delivered to their home.

You Can Be Pavement…just for one day.

By Nils on Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Ever wanted to go to a TV taping?  One where Pavement is playing?  Stick around to try and meet the band?  Go backstage?  Watch soundcheck?  Eat their food?  Talk fantasy sports with Malkmus?

Ever wanted to, you know, get your lazy ass off the couch and JOIN PAVEMENT?  Then do it, goofball.  Imagine the Twitter potential!

Pavement are performing on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on September 23 – and YOU can play guitar with them on stage!  Just submit a video of you playing a Pavement song on guitar (apologies to bass players and drummers everywhere), the band will whittle it down, and then, as with all good things, the public decides.  Details here:

http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/pavement

Kudos to Fallon and Pavement for rolling with this crazy scheme!
