On the heels of their recent “Marching Song” 12″ EP and first US tour (culminating in tonight’s show at Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory), Esben and the Witch will be releasing their debut full-length LP/CD/digital album on January 31, 2011 (February 8 in North America ). The Brighton trio, recently nominated for a Q Award, found themselves nearly drowning in plaudits following “Marching Song”‘s release “teetering on the edge of explosive emotion”, raved one observer, while the assessment, “thoroughly mesmerizing” came to mind for another.
And while the currently available “Marching Song” 12″ is as impressive as advertised, ‘Violet Cries’, recorded by produced by the band’s Daniel Copeman, easily ranks amongst the more audacious and ambitious debut albums, whether in recent memory or in this label’s very long run. While we’re occupied petitioning retailers to add an “Uneasy Listening” bin card to their sales floor, here’s just a hint of what you’re in for next February ;

As previously reported by our buddies over at ATP you’re in for a treat if you happen to be in London this new years eve as there’s an amazing gig with Sonic Youth headlining a 4-band bill. Make sure to get down there early to see Factory Floor opening the party, followed by The Pop Group and the ‘ATP house band’ Shellac, with Mr Stuart Braithwaite spinning records between sets.
I consider myself a somewhat culturally aware, open-minded person. Heck, I’ve been to Canada a couple of times. And I don’t consider myself to have a knee-jerk, negative reaction when it comes to themes of overt sexualty, demonic imagery or collaborations with Klaus Meine. All of that said, I have NO FUCKING IDEA what is going on with the record cover above.
I am not hear to disparage Ms. Pesch’s impressive musical achievements (even if her website crashed my computer several times while composing this post) but I’m thoroughly baffled by this sleeve. Were the title of the album, ’25 Years In Torn Clothing While Presiding Over A Mass Burial Ground”, I’d have a much easier time with it. In any event, as someone in the music business who recently celebrated an important anniversary, I’m sure I speak on behalf of everyone at Matador in congratulating Doro on hitting the big 2-5.

Bitter melon (or karela if you’re from Orissa) is one of the most reviled and possibly one of the strangest looking vegetables. It’s always fascinated me and I was determined to try it, especially since I found this recipe on the rather odd (but very interesting) Mahanandi blog, written by an Indian cook from Houston.
The recipe combines sweet, sour and bitter flavors via jaggery, tamarind and karela. It’s one of those Bengali sorts of recipes that involves steaming the vegetables in a deglazed pan of flavored oil, then adding the other ingredients and spices to finish it off to a sort of vegetable stew.
Karela is covered with zillions of strange little wart-like bumps. I was relieved to learn that you peel these off (along with the skin) before slicing it into bite-sized pieces.
The caramel-ish sweetness of the unrefined jaggery combines wonderfully with the sour tamarind (though I wish the tamarind I get was sourer) and the karela, which is not as bitter as most people say (or maybe I like bitter).
The above clip (7 months old) is mostly being employed in this instance to accompany the following Kurt Vile & The Violators tour dates. Also, I was trying to put something else up at the top of this page. Thanks for understanding .

The wheels on the Magic Kids tour bus keep on turning during their super busy European tour and just to keep them a little more on their toes we can announce they’ll be playing an extra London show. They now headline the NME Radar show at Upstairs at The Garage on the 27th of October, with support coming from the much-hyped new band Islet. A full list of all their upcoming European shows are below, they’ll also be recording a BBC radio session at Madia Vale while we have them here too!
Sadly due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’ in the Against Me camp Fucked Up’s previously announced european dates with them have sadly been cancelled, however the dates with Arcade Fire later in the year are still all good and going ahead! For refunds on any tickets bought for the Against Me shows please return them to the point of purchase.

Glasser just finished up a run of U.S. Dates with Gayngs. They shared the stage on a number of occasions, recorded a video together, and by most accounts blew a lot of minds. It doesn’t stop for Glasser though. Right about now, Cameron and the band should be landing on the shores of the United Kingdom for a run of U.K and European dates before embarking on a full U.S, tour. We have these dates along with some new U.S. ones (in bold) below.
Also, we’re also thrilled to share a new standout track from Ring (now available in everywhere), Mirrorage. You’ll be seeing some reinterpretations, both visual and aural, of this track in the coming weeks but for the time being, here it is in its original glory.

October 22 of this month will mark the 3rd anniversary of the untimely passage of Lance Hahn. Whether you knew Lance thru his tenures leading Cringer or J-Church, his Honey Bear label or his writing for MRR or his own Some Hope & Some Despair…or perhaps just knew him thru his years in the service of some of America’s finest record and video stores, you were lucky to be have a pretty inspirational guy in your ears or your head. Some of his friends are banding together this Saturday night at Austin’s Red 7 to raise loot for his family ; amongst the participants, our own TL/RX and ‘Casual Victim Pile’ grads Wild America. But the entire bill is great. C’mon out w/ cash in hand, or purchase advance tickets here.
That didn’t turn out so badly, did it? From our perspective the paying customers and bands at last weekend’s Matador 21 celebrations at The Palms (NOT SHOWN ABOVE, sheesh!) had a great time. So did we — ridiculously so. I think I can speak on behalf of Chris, Patrick and Martin when I say the 72 whirlwind was equal parts humbling, gratifying and inspiring — the overwhelming majority of performances were scorchers (feel free to rate ‘em yourself in the comments area) and we couldn’t have been more psyched to be surrounded by such a crazy bunch of friends, old and new, from around the world. That so many of you went to such lengths to attend this event is not something we’re gonna forget for a very long time.
We’ve got a mountain of people to thank and if I’ve left anyone out, please take it easy on me BECAUSE MY HEAD STILL HURTS FROM SUNDAY. To our co-promoter, FYF Fest (Sean Carlson, Phil Hoelting, Mariko Jones) gracias for believing this could actually work. To our hosts, The Palms Resort & Casino, you couldn’t have been more gracious or helpful (especially when you removed the “PRIME RIB SPECIAL” text and replaced it with “MATADOR 21 : SOLD OUT” on the marquee). Though the auspices of MySpace Music, millions of viewers around the globe were able to see Mitch Mitchell nearly get his lights punched out some amazing shows. Altamont – thanks for the cool tote bags (and for not cursing us, with, y’know, Altamont-esque vibes) , Incase, thanks for the iPhone cases. Sailor Jerry, Miller and Black Star — despite nearly killing a few of us, we’re thanking you as well.
Transmission‘s Graham Williams and Johnny Sarkis performed tireless troubleshooting duties just hours after opening a new venue in Austin, TX. David Scheid became “THE FIXER” in ways that had no impact on Sunday’s NFL schedule, but heroically assisted our efforts over the weekend in ways we can barely quantify. I’ve already thanked Nils Bernstein, Gabe Spierer and Adam Farrell privately, so I’ll not embarrass them by citing their brilliant work in this public space. Winston Case’s excursions into the Matador video vaults might’ve exposed him to asbestos, bed bugs and VIDEO MADNESS, but such sacrifices kept us entertained between bands. Archivist Jesper Eklow and former design geniuses, Mark Ohe and Frank Longo, helped assemble many of the fantastic materials that were on dazzling display over the course of the weekend. We thank Zia Records and Origami Records for setting up show in the lobby, and patiently answering my inquiry about that “fuck you” song I’ve heard so much about (weirdly, that record wasn’t for sale).
Our masters of ceremonies for the weekend were thrown to the lions and somehow emerged unscathed ; Jeffrey Jensen, Bob Nastanovich, Tom Scharpling and Jon Wurster, thank you so much for sparing all 2300 ticket holders the “humor” of Jay Mohr. On the DJ front, we commend Mike Haliechuk, James McNew, Dean Bein, Rusty Clarke and Dave Martin for supplying excellent pre-recorded entertainment. Karaoke Underground made their Las Vegas debut late Saturday and Sunday nights and with assistance from such members of the Matador roster as Ted Leo, Sandy Miranda, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley, showed the Matador at 21 attendees what Austin residents have known for ages (ie. K.U.’s shows-are-tops, so thanks, Kaleb & Hannah).
An attempt to do something on this scale wasn’t gonna be without hiccups — or wild coughing spasms. But by the time Guided By Voices had concluded their 30 song set early Monday morning, we felt like The Lost Weekend was everything we’d hoped for and a little bit more. You might feel otherwise, and perhaps someday there will be an open forum of some sort where you can freely express your dissent. Until that day arrives, however, everyone who wasn’t there will just have to trust me when I say Matador At 21 Was A Blast (and now I need a cold washcloth). To the people who care so much about our artists and label, thank you for sharing it with us.
