Regular Matablog readers will be both familiar with and appreciative of the restraint with which we discuss the various going-on that are inevitably a part of life here in the music industry’s fast lane. It’s at the risk of ruining our reputation for understatement, then, that I describe the anticipation for Kurt Vile’s forthcoming album, Smoke Ring For My Halo, as approaching a fever pitch. Kurt & The Violators are happy to contribute to that build-up with today’s live broadcast of their WXPN Free at Noon show, which starts exactly when you would think it would: 12:00 noon EST. Philadelphia, tune in at 88.5FM. Rest of the world, do yourself a favor and listen online.

Yo La Tengo Warms Up For Seattle Show With KEXP Session Today

By Jeremy P. Goldstein on Thursday, February 17th, 2011

They may not be spinning the Wheel of Whatever but Yo La Tengo will indeed be performing live on KEXP today at 4PM PST/7PM EST ahead of their show this evening at The Showbox at the Market. Tonight’s gig will mark the first date on the West Coast leg of their Spinning Wheel tour, with other shows to follow Seattle in Portland, Eugene, Oaktown, LA, and ending in Costa Mesa on 2/24. There is a Vancouver date thrown in between Seattle and Portland, but I don’t speak Canadian, so I didn’t include that initially.

Tune in to the pending awesomeness on 90.3FM in the greater 206 or listen online on KEXP’s site.

New Matador Records (beta)Store

By Michael on Friday, February 11th, 2011

After many faithful years of service the old Matador Records webstore will soon be sent off to pasture as we make way for this here younger and better looking replacement.

We’d like to invite you to check out the new store and would appreciate any feedback, there is a button on the right side of the page, and maybe even buy a record or two.

We don’t have digital purchases ready to go yet and are still working out some kinks but to encourage your early usage enter code ‘TESTER15‘ at checkout to receive 15% off any order for the next week.  Any problems along the way feel free to email store@matadorrecords.com and we look forward to having this baby up and fully functional in the very near future.

Yo La Tengo’s Spinning Wheel Tour : Come For The Element Of Chance, Stay For The Delicious Cake

By Gerard on Friday, February 11th, 2011

Actually, we can’t guarantee there will be any cake left over.  But salutations to the persons responsible for the culinary masterpiece above, inspired of course, by Yo La Tengo’s highly risky/controversial current touring scheme.

A More Casual Than Usual ‘Casual Victim Pile’ Where-Are-They-Now? Starring Follow That Bird!

By Gerard on Friday, February 11th, 2011

It’s been a long time since we updated you on the comings and goings of the contributors to our 2010 Austin compilation album, ‘Casual Victim Pile’. Since the last missive, the Golden Boys and Wild America went (the former to Europe for a December trip, the latter committed rock’n'roll auto de fé with a house show finale) and Dikes Of Holland came (out with a new full-length album that was arguably one of last year’s best). But for for the purpose of appearing to be timely/relevant for a change, we’ll focus on the recent activity of Follow That Bird! (above), who mark the release of their brand new Mt. Fuji 7″  with the following tour dates ;

sat 2.12 – austin, tx @ the mohawk w/ silent diane, dikes of holland, holy wave
thur 2.17 – el paso, tx @ garage tequila
fri 2.18 – tucson, az @ hangart
mon 2.21 – san francisco @ the knockout
thur 2.24 – eugene, or @ wandering goat coffee co
fri 2.25 – portland, or @ the woods
sat 2.26 – portland, or @ wtf bikes
sun 2.27 – seattle, wa @ the sunset tavern
thur 3.3 – denver, co @ the hi-dive
fri 3.4 – albuquerque, nm @ blackbird
sat 3.5 – marfa, tx @ marfa book company

On a slightly related tip, there’s a second volume of ‘CVP’ — the creatively dubbed, ‘Casual Victim Pile II’ coming out on vinyl very soon on another label. I’m told it might be a quality endeavor, but at the risk of getting all corporate for a moment, is the theft of Matador’s intellectual property not even worth protesting? I don’t know how these people can sleep at night.

Kurt Vile Takes It To The Moms And The Pops (or) Instores Are In.

By Michael on Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

In anticipation of the release of his upcoming ‘Smoke Ring For My Halo’ (out 3/8), Kurt Vile will be running around the northeast and stopping in some of our favorite independent record shops playing a series of solo acoustic (and one full-band) instores. Some very special guests are in the works, with Northampton Wools (Thurston Moore + Bill Nace) already confirmed for one of the three NYC engagements.

Get psyched, people. Get real psyched.
