Interpol – Turn On The Bright Lights: The Tenth Anniversary Edition

Ten years ago, Interpol’s debut album seized the imagination of a generation. The spare, lean textures, darkly oblique lyrics and suave stage presence were entirely different from the bands who preceded them on the charts and the radio.
Now on November 19, we are commemorating Turn On The Bright Lights with a Tenth Anniversary Edition, fully remastered in a beautiful deluxe hardbound book with unreleased photos (48 pages in the CD, 28 large pages in the vinyl) and a second disc of bonus tracks, many unreleased, plus demos and B-sides and a DVD.
The album will be available as a double CD+DVD, double LP+DVD, and digital album with digital booklet. Preorders will come with a replica of the band’s first piece of merchandise, a button with the original Interpol logo.

In 2002, we released our first album, Turn On the Bright Lights. We had waited close to five years for the opportunity to record an album. Needless to say this was a memorable moment for us. We never had any expectations for how the album would be received. We just wanted to present our music as an album to anyone who would be open to hearing it. It was incredible to finally tour and see people react to these songs. We never could have imagined that the album would have reached so many people throughout the world.
We spent a good deal of time this past year digging through our archives and asking others to dig through theirs in the hopes of uncovering some forgotten material. The result of our hunting and gathering has yielded this Tenth Anniversary Edition of Turn On the Bright Lights. We wanted to do something special for the fans who have always supported us. We wanted to do something special for the best fans in the world. We hope you enjoy it.

Yes it does. (Note that some tracks that are on the CD and digital ONLY come on the download coupon with the vinyl due to space limitations, these are the ones marked with the = sign in the list above.)

The vynil and CD are out of stock, I’m sad about it. I hope to get those items, I think many fans like me really want to have them. I expect to find those items on the band’s website soon.

Why couldn’t you guys just make the vinyl version 3LPs instead of 2, so we could get ALL of those tracks on vinyl? Making the last 9 tracks of the bonus material download only was what stopped me from buying this. I would have happily paid an extra $5-10 for that 3rd vinyl disc, in order to have it all as a set. I haven’t decided on getting the CD set yet or not, I really wanted it all on vinyl. I have the original on CD and vinyl so I’m torn on whether to even get it or not now.

Hi Chris. This was a tough one. We actually didn’t realize that the second disc was going to be so long until quite late in the production process. But the bigger problem was keeping the cost reasonable. You can get per-unit manufacturing costs to something (just) doable for something like this by making a quantity like 5000, but there’s a limit to what most people will pay, and though many people might have been OK with shelling out $45 for a three-LP set, most will not, which meant we wouldn’t have been able to sell through. For what it’s worth, I think the pared-down version on the second vinyl disc actually flows better and is more interesting, sort of a “great lost Interpol album,” and you still get quality FLAC downloads of the other songs, all of which are dupes and alternate takes anyway. I realize this is at variance with what some people have written about as being the virtue of the set, such as Pitchfork, i.e. that the second disc shows you the evolution of TOTBL, but I’m suspecting they were reviewing off the CD version. Having listened extensively to both, I can conclusively say I really like disc 2 as it is on the vinyl version. But maybe that’s just me. Anyway, that’s how we got here. Patrick

Guys, the coupon should be in there. Check all the crevices. If not (sometimes the plant messes up and omits them), please let us know and we’ll get you replacement codes.
