Later this week Fucked Up will be needing to change up their winter wear for something a little cooler as they head down to the summery southern hemisphere as they join the Soundwave Festival around Australia. Seeing as they’re going to be around that neck of the woods they’ll also be heading over to Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore to sample to sites and play some shows.
After completing a whole load of north american dates, Kurt Vile (and the Violators) will be heading over to Europe for 3 weeks worth of shows, starting early May and taking in headline shows and festivals, including Primavera Sound, Stag & Dagger and Liverpool Sound City festivals.
Ahead of the release of the new album ‘Smoke Ring For My Halo’ Pitchfork have previewed the album track ‘Ghost Town’ naming it best new music – you can head there now to hear it for yourself.
In anticipation of the release of his upcoming ‘Smoke Ring For My Halo’ (out 3/8), Kurt Vile will be running around the northeast and stopping in some of our favorite independent record shops playing a series of solo acoustic (and one full-band) instores. Some very special guests are in the works, with Northampton Wools (Thurston Moore + Bill Nace) already confirmed for one of the three NYC engagements.
We just wanted to remind everyone of some good news. If you live on the West Coast then Ted Leo is coming to visit on a run of solo tour dates later this month. Fear not though for all who live east of the Pacific Ocean, Ted loves you too and has just announced another series of solo US tour dates, slated for late April/early May. Please visit Ted’s site for more details about his upcoming tour dates and hopefully we’ll see you at one of these shows!

as if you needed any other reason to attend, keep in mind that whenever the Sklar Bros. make a public appearance, there’s always the smallest chance Mary J. Blige might turn up in support of her former collaborators.
Though the above poster is not entirely accurate, we can finally confirm (ie. after everyone else has already reported it) the following members of the Matador / True Panther Sounds family will be appearing at The 12th Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival this coming April 15-17
Interpol
The New Pornographers

As for the rest of the bill, well, we all have our favorites, but I’d like to issue a deep personal thank-you to the organizers for NOT BOOKINGTHESE DUDES.
Cold Cave will be touring this coming April and May, including many dates supporting the Kills on their upcoming spring tour.
To celebrate both bands’ forthcoming releases, Ticketmaster will be running a special bundle that will include options to purchase the upcoming spring releases from both Cold Cave and The Kills.
Keep an eye on the Matablog, this week for the on-sale details, along with our Cold Cave album announcement.

Click above to watch the first proper video for Perfume Genius, for the song “Lookout, Lookout” (via Pitchfork). Directed by Patrick Sher and shot in Portland.
Perfume Genius has also just announced one more NYC show before the end of the year, supporting Light Asylum at a secret space in Bushwick next Wednesday, December 15. The $28 tickets include free hors d’oeuvres and three free drinks. Go to envelopefamily to buy tickets; location information will be included with purchase confirmation.
For those of you who missed it, yesterday we re-released the Learning album in a special slipcase edition with new artwork and three new tracks. You can buy it from us:
“On January 15th, 2011, Shearwater will present The Island Arc, the trilogy of albums that includes 2006′s Palo Santo, 2008′s Rook, and 2010′s The Golden Archipelago, in a single, complete performance at the beautiful Central Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas.
This will be a one-time-only event – we’ve never performed these thematically-linked albums in order, and probably never will again. We’ve also never played some of the songs live at all. We’ll be joined by old and new friends for this show, and we promise a really special evening for everyone.
The Island Arc isn’t a farewell show, not by a long shot, but it does feel like a bookend. It’s a way for us to look back and to clear the way for what’s next – which, whatever it is, is going to be quite different from these records.
We begin recording a new album in early 2011. “ - Jonathan Meiburg
As mentioned earlier today by Jeremy, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists are playing NYC’s Terminal 5 tonight in support of pals and labelmates The New Pornographers. In a little more than a month’s time, however, Ted will be hitting the road all by his lonesome, playing songs from 2010′s ‘The Brutalist Bricks’ as well as previous albums, probably some covers and….hey, wait a minute. Where, precisely do we get off, projecting what Ted’s repertoire is likely to be? Sure, it’s an educated guess, but if my years in this racket have taught me anything, there’s no sure things in the entertainment business. Except Susan Boyle.

Yo La Tengo’s (usually) annual 8 night Hanukkah stand to benefit various charities kicked off at Maxwell’s last night ; while Ira recaps the evening with considerable aplomb, I can tell you my cellular telephone device was BLOWING UP (as the hip people like to say) with news of various star turns from M. Ward, Todd Barry, Nash Kato and most surprisingly, Elvis Aaron Presley, whom I though was banned from the venue. We’re only a few hours away from Night Two and I’ve been asked to remind you there’s special t-shirts for these events on sale at the club (leftovers via Kung Fu or yolatengo.com? that depends if there’s any leftover). I’ve not seen ‘em yet, but a tee from the past is shown above. All of the shows are totally sold out so please don’t ask us to weasel you in because refusal often offends. You have no idea how many years I’ve waited to use the phrase “refusal often offends”.
Next week sees The New Pornographers jetting over for their last shows of 2010 with a headline show at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire on Thursday, 9th December, before heading down to play The ATP Bowlie weekender on the 10th. Tickets are still available for the London show and can be bought from here.
Earlier this year Pitchfork filmed Glasser playing at CMJ as part of their #Offline festival, resulting in the above video. What you might notice is the option of choosing your camera angle, as there were 6 in the room you can select to watch each one individually, or all of them together (as seen above), allowing you to play director of the performance.
They run through the songs ‘Tremel’, ‘Home’ and ‘Mirrorage’, all taken from this years debut album Ring. You can head over to Pitchfork to see the videos now.
After taking a well-deserved break from touring over the new year, Glasser will head back to Europe for their most extensive tour there yet.
January 2011

It’s been nearly a full calendar year since Mission Of Burma provided the Empire or Garden States with what the social crusaders like to call “teaching moments”. Thankfully, the drought is nearly over, with new shows confirmed at Maxwell’s on January 28 and Brooklyn’s Bell House on January 29. Tickets are on sale now.
Following on from last week’s short stint of dates around the UK, Esben and the Witch will return next year with live shows starting the same day as the release of their debut album, Violet Cries, on January 31st. The band’s most recent UK shows were hailed as “strangely beautiful… a masterclass in sustaining an audiences attention” (Spoonfed) and at least one writer’s “gig of the year” (High Voltage).
You can see the band playing at the following UK dates:
The band have also now shared the track-listing for Violet Cries, the previously released EP track ‘Marching Song’ and free download ‘Warpath’ feature, along with a re-working of ‘Eumenidies’, an early track taken from their very first ’33′ EP.

Delorean will be rounding up their US dates with Lemonade shortly and will be heading back over to tour Europe in December. They haven’t played live here since their festival sets in the summer, so make the most of it and get yourself along to a show if they’re playing nearby!
December 6th – Hoxton Bar and Kitchen, London, UK (tickets)
December 7th – Ruby Lounge, Manchetser, UK (tickets)
Aside from this coming Saturday’s solo acoustic instore, Mr. Vile only has one left on his calendar (at least for this tour).
Next Thursday November 18 @ 7:30pm Kurt is stopping in Waterloo records for a very cool, very free solo acoustic set. Check it out if you’re in Austin.
And check out Kurt’s show with his band The Violators at Emo’s later that night.
(dear Merv Griffin’s lawyers : this wasn’t our idea! It’s not even the right wheel!)
After wrapping up 2010 with a return to their sold-out Hanukkah series at Mawell’s, Yo La Tengo will once again, in the words of their close friend Hank Garfield, Get In The Van. As has been recent Yo La Tengo practice, the band have endeavored to make tickets available at face value at a number of independent record stores, with details below. Tickets go on sale this Friday, November 5.
At the risking of brutally thieving from the band’s website, Yo La Tengo are touting the creation of a giant spinning wheel (“of fortune…fate?”) that will help determine the repertoire of the first 45 minutes of that night’s performance. Options include but are not limited to, “Songs That Begin With The Letter S” and “Sitcom Theatre” (surely I am not the only person in the band’s fanbase who hopes “The Ropers” has made the cut).

The train keeps on rolling but don’t fret… this isn’t the last of the Kurt Vile instores that we’re announcing along KV’s current tour. We’ve got at least one more to announce. When? Where? You’ll have to wait and see…
Until then check out Kurt at M-Theory in San Diego next Saturday and then check him out again that night at Casbah.

On the heels of their recent “Marching Song” 12″ EP and first US tour (culminating in tonight’s show at Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory), Esben and the Witch will be releasing their debut full-length LP/CD/digital album on January 31, 2011 (February 8 in North America ). The Brighton trio, recently nominated for a Q Award, found themselves nearly drowning in plaudits following “Marching Song”‘s release “teetering on the edge of explosive emotion”, raved one observer, while the assessment, “thoroughly mesmerizing” came to mind for another.
And while the currently available “Marching Song” 12″ is as impressive as advertised, ‘Violet Cries’, recorded by produced by the band’s Daniel Copeman, easily ranks amongst the more audacious and ambitious debut albums, whether in recent memory or in this label’s very long run. While we’re occupied petitioning retailers to add an “Uneasy Listening” bin card to their sales floor, here’s just a hint of what you’re in for next February ;
“Warpath” [192kbps mp3] (from ‘Violet Cries’, OLE 939)
Esben and the Witch will be touring Europe and North America in early 2011 ; though if you’re based in one of the relevant cities below, you’ll not want to miss out.
