As mentioned previously in this space, Matador will be celebrating the label’s 21st anniversary this October and this much we can finally confirm : there will be 3 nights of shows starting Friday October 1, and concluding Sunday October 3 at the Palms Casino & Resort In Las Vegas, NV. We’ll be dropping further hints about the amazing lineup in the days ahead, but a final announcement and information about how to purchase tickets will be made here at the trusty Matablog on July 5. Are you as psyched as we are? (hopefully yes, because we’re getting in for free).
(ADDENDUM – there’s been a bit of confusion so just to clear things up, tickets DO NOT GO ON SALE JULY 5. We’ll merely be announcing the on sale date/time on July 5. thanks – GC)
HI. Most of you are probably aware by now that it’s soccer season. Soccer season occurs when actual soccer season is over, and the world cup happens. Another thing that happens is charity soccer games. We are involved in one next week, and it’s like this:
Right To Play is an international organization aimed at empowering and building skills of children in the developing world through sport, focusing specifically on girls, people with disabilities, children affected with HIV/AIDS, refugees and street kids. The organization uses soccer in 23 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America to promote things like education, health promotion and disease prevention, and community development.
When people say “sports are stupid”, besides the fact that sports are in fact mostly great, this is one of the ways they are actually important as well. Sport is something that touches people everywhere on the planet, and is as culturally prevalent and important as music. The ridiculous global lead up to the world cup this year should help explain what I mean. Kids everywhere in the world want to lead happy and productive lives, and in most cases just want to play soccer.
Anyhow, we’re taking part in a NXNE soccer (football) game next week to benefit Right To Play – a bunch of music people are playing against a bunch of industry people (you can see the lineup HERE) including Rick The Temp. Players are being sponsored individually to raise money, so if this sounds like the kind of thing that might be up your alley, you can go
to donate money, even if its like $5, or even if you are reading this blog in Djibouti on vacation.
And/Also if you are in Toronto, you can come watch the game. It’s Sunday June 20th at BMO Field.

Our very own man of the world Pink Eyes will be a guest on WNYC’s Soundcheck today, weighing in on Arizona’s controversial, and to co-opt Pink Eyes’ band name, fucked up new legislation. He wrote an op-ed piece for Stereogum that you can read here and then at 2PM EDT tune in to hear him debate his stance. For you NYC readers and listeners, WNYC is found at 93.9 on the FM dial and 820 on the AM side.
It seems everyone is after some sort of Euro trip this summer, with Fucked Up joining (what feels like) the rest of the Matador roster in having a jolly overseas, playing a load of festival dates and a some headline shows in between. Presumably just to break up the travelling and to hopefully stop the arguing in the back of the van, fights over the stereo and never ending “Are we there yet?!” pestering.
They’ll be tearing up stages on the following dates
15th July – The Barfly, Cardiff, UK
16th July – Guilfest (Rocksound Stage), Guildford, UK
17th July – Dour Festival, Belgium
18th July – Melt Festival, Gräfenhainichen, Germany
19th July – MTC, Cologne, Germany
20th July – De Affaire Festival, Nijmegen, Netherlands
21st July – Hana Bi Beach, Marina Di Ravenna, Italy
Hey guys, can’t hurt to remind you again that tomorrow is INTERNATIONAL RECORD STORE DAY, and if heaps of RSD-exclusive vinyl and that fulfilling feeling of buying great music from great retailers isn’t enough to get you out of the house, here are two more events members of the Matador-family are involved with:

Fucked Up‘s Pink Eyes will be hosting an all day event at Toronto’s Sonic Boom Records that features in-store performances from Sloan, Adam Green, Meligrove Band, Metz, Buck 65, Valery Gore and more. Damian’s also hinted at a special guest appearance for those who show up before 3PM!
When he’s not performing in Cold Cave and as Prurient, Dominick Fernow spends his time overseeing the Hospital Productions record label and shop, which primarily focuses in noise and black metal music. For Record Store Day, the store will debut 13 new cassette releases on the label. In addition, the first 100 people to visit the store are invited to come to the store to record their very own noise cassette. The recording gear will be set up and supplied by the store and you can record your own
1 minute noise tape. The store will personalize your cover for you and you will be the only person to have a copy. You get to keep your recording free of charge.
100 people. 1 minute tapes. Limited to 1.
What we mean is… we’ve got some limited edition vinyl items at many participating independent record shops for one day, and one day only — the third annual Record Store Day (henceforth, RSD ’10) this Saturday, April 17!

Meanwhile, Damian is involved in a program called Do The Math, run by a food program called The Stop — an initiative seeking to demonstrate the limits of social assistance. Damian will be subsisting solely off a standard food hamper provided by a local food bank for as long as possible.
In the program’s words:
On April 6, 2010, ten high-profile Torontonians (and their families, if they’re joining them) will pick up a standard food bank hamper at The Stop. These hampers—which include an array of non-perishable food, as well as a little bit of fresh produce—typically last a person three or four days, though many folks stretch this to a week or ten days. Our participants will live exclusively off the contents of the hamper for as long as they can. They will not eat out or accept free food or drink (though they are encouraged to eat at least two meals at a drop-in). They will be allowed to use up to five standard pantry ingredients—oil, flour, salt, coffee, etc.—but are asked to keep track of the quantity of these items used.
Fucked Up‘s latest entry in their Zodiac series of EPs (see “Year of the Dog”, “…Pig” and “…Rat”) is the majestic orchestral piece, “Year of the Ox”.
On CBC3′s Bande à Part series, the group unleashed an early preview of the track, featuring guest vocals from Annie-Claude Deschênes of Duchess Says, a string section and an arsenal of guitars. Fucked Up also performed “David’s Plan”, the title-track from their recently-released charity single.
A recorded version of the track is forthcoming with a different set of special guests. Be on the lookout for an announcement on Looking For Gold.

We have a winner for the Fucked Up 7″ Contest. It is – drum rolls please – Steve Wiltse! His collection contained items that some of us in the office could not even identify. Well done, sir.
Steve will now receive a special 1 of 1 copy of Fucked Up’s new Couple Tracks 7″ with himself on the cover (above). Check out Steve’s Fucked Up collection after the jump. It is impressive, to say the least.
Pictures of his winning collection are below. (more…)
Last Friday night, some of us were lucky enough to catch Fucked Up perform a set that – even by the band’s lofty standard – was really one for the ages.
Also, FACT Mag has just published a mixtape by Mr. Jo of FU.
Finally, the first non-Matador employee to respond to this post correctly identifying the up-and-coming New York bedroom-pop wizard rocking the Fucked Up t-shirt on Looking For Gold wins a prize.
The flyer above pretty much says it all, but if your browser’s not displaying images or you have trouble with military time (and are also unaware of how the subject line of a blog post relates to the content of said post), here are the pertinent details: Fucked Up of Toronto, ON and Kurt Vile of Philadelphia, PA are paying visits to the latter city’s own WKDU before tonight’s show at the Barbary, and each will be treating your ears to a live session at 91.7FM or wkdu.org. Fucked Up plays at around 2:30PM EST (it’s college radio, we thrive on uncertainty in this biz), and Kurt follows at 5:30PM EST (or thereabout).
In addition to the opportunity to see the FU & KV show tonight in Philly, there are a few more chances to see this dynamic duo in action:
Wed-Feb-17 Philadelphia, PA Barbary
Thu-Feb-18 Hoboken, NJ Maxwell’s
Fri-Feb-19 Brooklyn, NY Europa
Sat-Feb-20 Boston, MA Middle East Downstairs
Those of you looking for a more permanent way to spend time with the aforementioned artists (though when you get right down to it, is anything really permanent) should click on over to the Matastore to purchase the latest Fucked Up and Kurt Vile jams, both of which come highly recommended by the discriminating music fans of Philadelphia and the world.
We were sitting around Matador World HQ the other day, talking about our favorite hardcore/punk/psychedelic/experimental band and their fans. Fucked Up has some pretty hardcore ones (no pun intended), which makes sense; with a discography as epic as their live show, you too would tend to attract the fanatical types. This got us to thinking: what do you get the Fucked Up fan who already has everything? How about a custom made, one-of-a-kind copy of their new, only-available-at-fine-indie-retailers, Couple Tracks 7″ with YOU on the cover art? If you win this contest, we will add your photo to the outlined area of the cover art above and ship this one of a kind record to your door. Kinda cool, I know.
So how then do you get yourself immortalized on this 1 of 1 Couple Tracks 7″ cover? Simple. Gather together all your Fucked Up singles and display them in some way. Sure, your collection can be laid out on your bed but we’ll look favorably upon people who go the extra mile here. What’s the “extra mile”? Hard to say. Impress us. Feel free to take inspiration from Extreme Ironing. Prove yourself to be worthy of this honor.
Now take a picture of your collection and e-mail it to CoupleTracksContest@gmail.com. Deadline for entries is midnight on February 6th. How will a winner be chosen? Like pornography, we will know it when we see it. Completeness/a massive collection is important but a generally epic photo is also helpful. Feel free to incorporate other acts of Fucked Up devotion: shirts, LPs, tattoos, children named Damian, etc. Win this contest and you’ll surely be the envy of every other Fucked Up fan at their Fucked Up Saves Music SXSW showcase in March.
Though you’d be inclined to say we’re biased, we certainly cannot argue with J. Mascis’ listing Kurt Vile’s Childish Prodigy in his top picks for 2009. Following the kind plug, Dinosaur Jr. will be taking Kurt Vile & The Violators on tour this month:
Fri-Jan-15 Milford, CT Daniel Street
Sat-Jan-16 New York, NY Bowery Ballroom
Sun-Jan-17 Brooklyn, NY Music Hall of Williamsburg
Tue-Jan-19 Ithaca, NY Castaways
And don’t forget that Kurt is poised to hit the road with Fucked Up in February:
Fri-Feb-12 Oberlin, OH The ‘Sco (Dionysus Disco) / Oberlin College
Sat-Feb-13 Chicago, IL Empty Bottle
Sun-Feb-14 Bloomington, IN The Video Saloon
Mon-Feb-15 Cincinnati, OH Southgate House
Tue-Feb-16 Baltimore, MD Otto Bar
Wed-Feb-17 Philadelphia, PA The Barbary
Thu-Feb-18 Hoboken, NJ Maxwell’s
Fri-Feb-19 Brooklyn, NY Europa
Sat-Feb-20 Boston, MA Middle East
Sun-Feb-21 Montreal, QUE La Sala Rossa
Fri-Feb-26 Toronto, ONT Opera House
Finally, Kurt will be appearing in Philadelphia tomorrow, with the awesomely-returned Strapping Fieldhands
If all goes well, on iTunes you’ll be able to purchase Fucked Up’s star-studded cover of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? All proceeds will go to benefit three organizations in Canada working to bring to end to the epidemic of missing and murdered native women.
The song is a tongue-in-cheek take on the ’80s classic written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, and features vocals from Yo La Tengo, GZA, Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend), Bob Mould (Husker Du), Tegan & Sara, Andrew W.K., Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio), David Cross (comedian) and Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene).
Fucked Up’s frontman Damian Abraham, a.k.a. “Pink Eyes”, says “it’s hard to find a balance between the song being a fun, playful holiday classic and the reason we’re putting it out, to benefit organizations dealing with a deadly, serious issue.” Since 1980, there have been 520 known cases of missing or murdered Aboriginal women across Canada and many believe the true number to be significantly higher. If compared to the rest of the population their death and disappearance rate would be equivalent to over 18,000 Canadian women and girls missing or murdered. Approximately 50% of the murders and disappearances have occurred during or since 2000.
The recording of this track was funded in full by a portion of the $20,000 award Fucked Up received for winning the Polaris Music Prize for their recent album, The Chemistry of Common Life.
‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ should be available from iTunes on Tuesday December 8, and will be released as a 7″ single with an unreleased Fucked Up song on the b-side in February 2010.
Fucked Up are also releasing a compilation of their many rare singles recorded between 2002 and 2009, Couple Tracks, accompanied by a two-song limited-edition 7″ and in stores on January 26.

There’s a whole host of Yo La action to update you with this week. Tonight, the band will be speaking to Gideon Coe live on BBC 6 Music, show starting at 9pm. You can listen live via DAB digital radio, or log onto Gideon’s 6Music page here for a live stream. The band will be discussing Popular Songs, their career and playing some of their favourite tracks from their most loved artists.
And tomorrow, at 7pm, Yo La Tengo will be playing a rare instore show, Freewheeling style, at London’s Rough Trade East store. It’s a free show, but you’ll only get in with a wristband. WRISTBAND COLLECTION 1 HOUR PRIOR TO STAGE TIME, STRICTLY ONE PER PERSON. So get down to the store early to guarantee entry.

As well as YLT, you can also catch Sonic Youth and Fucked Up down at ATP. Check the ATP listings for everyone else playing.
originally released as the B-side to the “Triumph Of Life” 7″ (Vice/Jade Tree, 2006)
Here is what the band has to say about the song in the extensive liner notes:
“Neat Parts contains an acoustic guitar. The only thing you can do with a guitar that’s more embarrassing than sitting in a studio with headphones on playing an acoustic guitar, is riding the subway with one strapped to your back so everyone knows you are going to band practice. Otherwise this is a snappy little bside. The title doesn’t mean anything, it just sounds cool. I think we might have seen it written on the wall at our practice space. The drum beat from this song and ‘Teenage Problems’ is taken from the Undertones song ‘My Perfect Cousin.’”
To confuse matters slightly, Fucked Up will be releasing a 7″ entitled “Couple Tracks” / “Holden” on the same day as the comp. These are two brand-new songs. Although the cover image will be identical to the album, the packaging is going to be a little bit unusual – we’ll get into that closer to release day.
There will be special ways to get the 7″ both from us (including if you’ve preordered already) and from select indie retailers, to be announced shortly. We’ll also have something to announce about getting your hands on some rare original 7″es collected on the comp. For now, your best bet is to preorder the album, currently with a 15% discount – more details coming soon: UPDATE – YOU CAN NOW PREORDER THE SINGLE AS A PREORDER BUNDLE WITH THE ALBUM, CLICK THE LINK BELOW:

On January 26 we will be releasing a double-CD and double-LP compilation of Fucked Up‘s many, many hard-to-find uncollected 7″ and 12″ tracks. Entitled Couple Tracks, it contains 25 songs. (There are rumors that there may be a simultaneous 7″ single of the same name). Designed as a sequel to their earlier compilation, Epics In Minutes (Deranged, 2004), the cover photographs riff on the Beatles red and blue albums thang. Comes with complete illustrated discography of the contents, with extensive liner notes about each song. Double CD is only $11 $12 direct from us. Double Vinyl will be gatefold 120-gram with MP3 coupon, priced at only $18 direct from us. PREORDER here.
Couple Tracks spans an extraordinarily varied (and extraordinarily collectible) musical career that has mainly been documented on 7-inch vinyl singles released around the world on many labels in many countries. Chronologically, it ranges from the A-side of their first single, No Pasarán, a commentary on the Spanish Civil War released on Deranged in 2002, to the fast alternate take of No Epiphany, their latest 7″ on Matador from earlier this year.
Other notable tracks include:
the definitive version of Generation and its two B-sides, Ban Violins and Magic Kingdom, released on Slasher – the introduction to the A-side comes from a Hamas recruitment CDR
covers of songs by British twee -pop legends The Shop Assistants, Another Sunny Day and Dolly Mixture, from two 7″es self-released by the band and only given away at a single show in Toronto in 2006, plus the B-side of a Matador 7″ from mid-2008
original, heavier versions of songs that later ended up on Hidden World, such as Triumph Of Life and Neat Parts, both from the 7″ originally released by Peter Bower Records in the UK
Fixed Race, from the Spanish version of Dangerous Fumes, aka Humos Peligrosos, released in Spain on La Vida Es Un Mus in 2006
Toronto FC, from the Hard Skin split 7″, only given away at a show in London in 2007
the 12″ version of Last Man Standing, only available if you selected the correct set of interlocked grooves on the B-side of the Year Of The Dog 12″ released in 2006
5 unreleased tracks
Plus much more – all beautifully remastered for your listening pleasure:

If you get Couple Tracks together with Epics In Minutes, then you will still have only a portion of the incredible Fucked Up singles output, but definitely the cream of the crop.
Then they come down to Brooklyn for a very special event – they will play the entirety of The Chemistry Of Common Life at the Masonic Temple in Fort Greene, with all the supporting instruments and parts from the album. Andrew W.K., The Vivian Girls and Katie Stelmanis will join them onstage, along with other performers to be announced. Katie Stelmanis and Titus Andronicus will be opening. Get your tickets HERE.

From City Sonic, directed by Anita Doron. Hey, while we’re on the subject of terrific record stores, Austin’s Sound On Sound is closing it’s doors on Monday, October 12. Sure, they do that every night, but this time they’ll not open ‘em again. As such, there’s a rather big clearance sale going on and if you’re in the area, say for the Austin Record Convention this weekend, you’re well advised to bring your money. (google map)
Fucked Up are the winners of Canada’s Polaris Music Prize. Awarded annually to the best Canadian musical artist, there is only a single artist chosen and it is an highly prestigious award.
Liisa Ladouceur, who oversees the voting for Polaris, talked about the intensity of the process.
“We ask the jury to vote regardless of genre and they truly did,” stated Liisa Ladouceur, Representative of the jury. “Members of the jury believed that the Fucked Up’s Chemistry Of Common Life was not only the best hardcore album of the year, not only the best Canadian album of the year, but was the best album of the year in the world – period.”
The 2009 11-member gala Grand Jury are: Bryan Acker (Herohill), Brendan Murphy (Hour), Stuart Derdeyn (Vancouver Province), Mary Dickie (Elle), Brad Frenette (National Post), Nicholas Jennings (freelance journalist), Robert Mersereau (CBC), Mia Parang (Musique Plus), Ben Rayner (Toronto Star), Brad Wheeler (The Globe And Mail) and Lisa Wilton (Calgary Sun).
For their performance on the show, Fucked Up were joined by Final Fantasy and Lullabye Arkestra. Not to mention Mrs. Falco, better known as Jonah’s mom (she plays the flute intro that leads off The Chemistry Of Common Life). You can view their Polaris performance of “Son The Father” on the Much Music site if you visit this link and then expand the “MOST RECENT VIDEO” tab.
Don’t forget, Fucked Up will be doing a full-album performance of Chemistry at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple on November 5… with additional musicians to truly bring the multiple layers of density and allusiveness that make up that album. Get ticketing info here.

As we near the one-year anniversary of Fucked Up’s The Chemisty of Common Life & the insanity that was the 12 hour show, we’re very pleased to announce some exciting Fucked Up news.
On Thursday, November 5, the band will be performing The Chemistry of Common Life live and in its entirety at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. Joining Fucked Up will be some very special guests performing onstage so as to fully recreate all the sounds on the album.
Ticketing information and further details to follow next week.
If you’re in the LA area this Labor Day Weekend, be sure to catch Fucked Up tomorrow at the F Yeah Fest along with Cold Cave, Times New Viking and Kurt Vile.
The band will also be playing Portland’s Wonder Ballroom on Saturday, September 19.
And let’s not forget to mention the Fucked Up double LP / double CD compilation, Couple Tracks: Singles 2001 – 2009, slated for an early 2010 release. Keep it here for more.
Fucked Up, who by all accounts pulled together the most ferocious set of Pitchfork weekend (two of them if you happened to be at Subterranean on Friday night), also found time to interview fellow fourth-wall breakers the Jesus Lizard.
Watch Pink Eyes hold his own with the heavyweights, and also see an outstanding version of “Crusades” from the festival.
OK, in addition to the above, previously announced event (careful readers will note we’ve scooped ourselves with some new release information — further information on at least one of these is coming early next week) Mission Of Burma are playing Northampton’s Pearl St. Ballroom tonight (Friday) with Doomstart and Kahoots. And here’s a bunch of forthcoming Fucked Up dates :
7/16 – Phoenix Theatre – Toronto
7/17 – Subterranean – Chicago
7/18 – Pitchfork Music Festival @ Union Park , Chicago
Jelly NYC, the folks behind the beloved McCarren Pool parties of yesteryear have shifted their venue this summer to Brooklyn’s East River State Park (90 Kent Ave.) Summer 2009′s kickoff show happens Sunday, July 12 and features Mission Of Burma, Fucked Up, Baltimore’s Ponytail, former Be Your Own Pet vocalist Jemina Pearl and DJ Jonathan Toubin. It all starts at around 2pm and we can promise this will be the hottest free concert to hit the NYC area since Diana Ross played Central Park in 1983. This is an appropriate analogy because a) much like Ms. Ross, Peter Prescott’s performance features many costume changes and b) the two performers previously were a part of historic combos that changed the face of music (Diana with the Supremes, Peter with the Molls).
