Connoisseurs of live radio performance have a great deal on their plate today, and you have us to thank for it.
Seattle singer/songwriter (and star of the year’s most controversial ad so far) Perfume Genius performs live on hometown station KEXP today at 2:00PM EST/11:00AM PST. Listen at 90.3FM or online at kexp.org, and pre-order the new Perfume Genius album, Put Your Back N 2 It, here.
Also this afternoon, Girls return to the World Cafe studios to play some songs from last year’s world-beating sophomore album, Father, Son, Holy Ghost. The show starts at 2:00PM EST/11:00AM PST, and can be heard at 88.5FM in Philadelphia, or online at xpn.org. Can’t catch the session when it airs? It’ll be on NPR’s website later in the day, and you can also find out when your local public radio station airs World Cafe at this link. And while you’re here, you might as well pick up a copy of Father, Son, Holy Ghost for yourself, or for a treasured friend.

Sometimes over here at Matador HQ we like to try wacky shit like making videos featuring famous funny guys or buying a single Soda Stream for 15 people to use and then wonder why it runs out of gas after a day and a half.
But this time we’re doing something a little more simple and a lot more awesome.
As you already know, Girls are playing Terminal 5 on Saturday January 14. As you probably know, tickets are disappearing faster than (insert Kardashian wedding joke here). So just for you, NYC, we’ve teamed up with some of the best independent records stores in the Big Apple to offer a FREE TICKET when you purchase a copy of Father, Son, Holy Ghost (while supplies last, of course).
Simple as that. Buy the new album at regular price, get a free ticket to the show at Terminal 5.
Today For No One, along with Refinery 29, brings us a lovely rendition of “Love Like A River” from Father, Son, Holy Ghost. The album is on sale for $6.99 at Amazon (the sale ends tomorrow, so hurry!). The session:
As announced, Girls will release an insane new 7″ on December 6th, and you can pre-order it now.
Finally, Girls have two of their biggest ever US shows coming up soon: Tuesday December 6th at the Fonda in LA (tickets) and Saturday Jan 14th at Terminal 5 in NYC (buy tickets or win them from Refinery 29). If you live in Santa Ana, you aren’t left out, either.

This weekend, Girls bowled over a massive crowd at Austin’s Fun, Fun, Fun fest. In a way it was the culmination of the last few months which saw their album Father, Son, Holy Ghost draw pretty universal praise, and the completion of a US tour that really established them as one of the strongest live rock bands going these days. SPIN said the Fun, Fun, Fun fest fest was the “Best Breakout Set” of the festival. We have to agree.
To celebrate we’d like to share a couple of things with you.
First, our friends at iTunes have made Father, Son, Holy Ghost available for a very limited time for only $5.99. If you haven’t copped the record yet, now is the time.
Second, when Girls were here in NYC last time they spent a day with the folks at Pitchfork filming an absolutely beautiful session in an abandoned church in Greenpoint. The band, along with Makeda Francisco, Skyler Lucas and Tracy Nelson, the lovely and talented singers who you may have seen accompany the band on select dates, TORE THROUGH a few of the newer songs. Crushing and awesome.
Luckily for those of you in Europe, the band start a tour there today. As for the States, southern California will play host to two very special nights with Girls in Los Angeles and Santa Ana, in early December. New York in January. For more details about their upcoming US/Euroepan dates and their newly announced single “Lawrence” click HERE
Thank you for reading and for the continued support.
What better way to wrap up a big, long and assuredly exhausting national tour than to come home, hang out in one of the world’s best record stores and play a free show for all of your hometown friends and fans?
Girls are doing exactly that at 2pm THIS SUNDAY, October 9 at Amoeba SF. Lucky.
And if you haven’t picked up the new album Father, Son, Holy Ghost be sure to do so soon, as the band will be hanging out after their set to sign your copy.
Girls are nearing the finish line of their current tour, but those of you who aren’t in the remaining few cities, or who want to re-experience the magic (or who, horrors, somehow missed the band when they came through your town), can tune in to The Current today. The guys play a live session for the Minneapolis airwaves and the world at large via the Internet at 5:00PM EDT/4:00PM CDT. Those in the former jurisdiction can tune in at 89.3FM, while those in the lawless expanse of cyberspace can click on this link to listen.
Remaining Girls tour dates:
October
Tuesday 04 – Vancouver, BC – The Biltmore Cabaret
Wednesday 05 – Seattle, WA – Neptune Theatre
Thursday 06 – Portland, OR – Wonder Ballroom
Saturday 08 – San Francisco, CA – Great American Music Hall

P.S. Album of the year contender Father, Son, Holy Ghost is still available for purchase and will be for the foreseeable future.
You like pizza. You like Girls. You like the respite that your lunch break provides. Why not combine all three at your other favorite thing… A RECORD STORE!
Next Thursday, September 29 Girls are playing a free, all ages, lunch hour instore at Reckless Records’ Broadway store with those Chicago-style pizzas and drinks for you hard workers out there. What better way to spend a lunch hour?
And if you just can’t tear yourself away from the desk at 2pm next Thursday, be sure to catch Girls that night at Lincoln Hall. But let’s face it, you’ve probably just been playing Snood all morning. Amirite?!
On the heels of the excellent and epic “Vomit” video, this is the other side of the Christopher Owens coin, as conceived by Girls’ own Chet JR White, who co-directed the video with Ivan Shumaker (Stu Barnes produced):
Girls are on the road as we speak, and reports are unanimous: un-miss the current lineup when it hits your town, cuz the shit is unmissable:

On September 13th, 2011, San Francisco’s Girls will release their second album Father, Son, Holy Ghost on True Panther. Two years after their debut (Album), and one year after the follow-up EP (Broken Dreams Club) it is the natural third entry in Girls’ recorded trinity, and features their most accomplished recordings to date. Both previous releases demonstrated that behind the noise of a back story loud enough to swallow most bands, stood two true rock craftsmen and traditionalists, who convey their own intimate, unique, and troubled visions.
For Father, Son, Holy Ghost Christopher Owens and JR White holed up in a basement recording studio located in San Francisco’s downtown Tenderloin district and “Vomit” is the first offering from those sessions. The juxtaposition of pain and beauty – hope and misery – which lie at the heart of classic rock and gospel music, are at the core of the song and the album.
Christopher shares his own thoughts: “I wrote vomit before Girls was even a band or an idea, this is one of the first songs I ever wrote along with ‘Substance’ and ‘Headache’ what you’re hearing in “Vomit” is someone who is at life’s lowest, seeing the light, and becoming a songwriter.”

Girls are pleased to announce a North American tour this fall in support of their sophomore full-length, Father, Son, Holy Ghost which comes out 9.13.11. The band is back in SF right now, hard at work practicing away and making sure the live set blows people away come September!

On September 13th, 2011 San Francisco’s Girls will release their second album and third record Father, Son, Holy Ghost on our imprint, True Panther Sounds and Turnstile in the UK/Europe. The album comes two years after their debut (Album), and one year after the follow-up EP (Broken Dreams Club).
On the third anniversary of the birth of Girls as a band Christopher Owens and Chet White found themselves entering the studio to begin recording their second album. More a collection of gear than a studio, recording took place in the bowels of a San Francisco office building. The two teamed up with new drummer Darren Weiss and guitarist John Anderson assembling performances and ultimately creating new music and musical relationships to carry the band through its newest incarnation.
Girls have taken what they’ve always done best and have displayed it with amazing clarity and the strongest of intent. Classic songwriting coupled with exciting production is their way. “I’m still all the same,” Owens says. “I still know I have to do it. I still love the songs and writing songs.”
Father. Son, Holy Ghost is at times ebullient and at times absolutely devastating. A truly beautiful record and the perfect amalgamation of a band’s past and present while most importantly leaving us all excited and hungry for their future.

Rather than us spieling about this record Christopher wrote y’all a letter that sums it all up way better than any of us could. 6 New songs. 30 minutes. Mp3 download below.
First off, if these changes have left anyone disappointed or inconvenienced, we’re truly sorry. I’ve been watching videos of the guys in the BP commercials all week trying to strike the right tone for this post, and wouldn’t you know it, MY VIDEO CAMERA IS BROKEN. Bullet dodged.
On the bright side, hey, DEAD MEADOW are playing. The opening VIP gala is still happening at 4pm Friday in the Hardwood Suite with dj sets by Ted Leo and myself. Same room becomes a VIP lounge Friday and Saturday nights, plus late night dj action on Friday (James McNew, Dean Bein) and Saturday (Dave Martin, Robby Morris). Matador at 21: The Lost Weekend takes place at the Palms Resort and Casino in Las Vegas from October 1-3, 2010. This event is sponsored by MySpace Music, Altamont and Incase.
October 15, 2010 Girls will be playing their biggest show yet in San Francisco- at the legendary Fillmore. Growing up in SF it sometimes seemed the closest a local band could get to the Fillmore’s stage was a matinee show of The Other Ones (they are from Marin anyways!) so we couldn’t be more excited for this. Show them some love San Francisco!
Tickets for “The Lost Weekend” aka Matador’s 21st birthday celebrations at The Palms will go on sale this Friday morning at 9am, PST. Here’s the details you’ve been hassling all of us about over the last week (and don’t think we don’t appreciate it)
a) Tickets/Pricing : An initial quantity will be on sale Friday for $SOLD. .After the $SOLD tickets sell out, the price increases to $SOLD. A Ticketfly.com link will be posted on this site on Thursday, July 8th. Starting Friday, you’ll have the opportunity to reserve standard rooms at the Palms for the discounted rate of $SOLD per night (the full 3 nights of the festival, only). The rooms feature two double bed and occupancy of up to 4 persons is allowed. The above rate is only available when purchasing tickets thru us. If you are interested in upgrading to a larger room or a suite you will be able to do so after purchasing the standard room. TICKETS FOR THE 3 NIGHTS + ROOMS are being sold jointly — we’re not selling tickets to the shows separately at this time, nor are we selling tickets for individual nights.
(ADDENDUM -i) A limited number of 3-day tickets priced at $SOLD—with no Palms reservation required — will be available Friday morning at 9am PST via Ticketfly.com
ii) if, for example, you’re buying 4 tickets to the shows, the $SOLD per night hotel fee can cover up to 4 people. $SOLD over 3 nights divided by 4 is hopefully not an crazy amount to charge for rooms in a world class resort).
B) VIP tickets. A limited number of VIP packages will be available at $SOLD — details about what you’ll get for the $SOLD are forthcoming. You’ll have the ability to upgrade from the regular tickets, assuming the VIP tickets aren’t sold out.
D) MORE BANDS. OK, we’re working on it. But in addition to the 19 artists confirmed on the above poster, we can confirm the original lineup of COME — Thalia Zedek, Chris Brokaw, Sean O’Brien and Arthur Johnson — will be participating. Actually, we already know who some of the other bands are, we’re just trying to drag this out. MORE MATABLOG CONTENT between now and October!
E) Set times - we’ll post these the week before the event.
F) These shows are open to all ages. However, access to the casino floor is limited to those 21 and over.
F) WHAT ABOUT LAS VEGAS HUMANS? Las Vegas’ Zia Records is selling 50 tickets to “The Lost Weekend” starting Friday, July 9. You’ll need a Nevada I.D. Reservations at the Palms are not required to purchase these tickets.
(ADDENDUM II :
INFORMATION FOR TICKETS AVAILABLE IN LAS VEGAS
Zia Records
4225 South Eastern Avenue
Las Vegas, NV 89119-5485
702-735-4942
Zia Records
4503 W. SAHARA

Tickets will go onsale at both stores at 10:00am on Friday, July 9th via lottery. By overwhelming demand by Nevada Residents we will be increasing the amount of tickets available (50 X 2 = 100) . There is a two ticket limit. Nevada state ID required for purchase. Any questions please email 21@matadorecords.com
As mentioned previously in this space, Matador will be celebrating the label’s 21st anniversary this October and this much we can finally confirm : there will be 3 nights of shows starting Friday October 1, and concluding Sunday October 3 at the Palms Casino & Resort In Las Vegas, NV. We’ll be dropping further hints about the amazing lineup in the days ahead, but a final announcement and information about how to purchase tickets will be made here at the trusty Matablog on July 5. Are you as psyched as we are? (hopefully yes, because we’re getting in for free).
(ADDENDUM – there’s been a bit of confusion so just to clear things up, tickets DO NOT GO ON SALE JULY 5. We’ll merely be announcing the on sale date/time on July 5. thanks – GC)
