Intended Play 2012, the vinyl bargain of the year & some good music to boot

By Robby on Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Today we’re psyched to tell you that OLE-981 is the Matador Records & True Panther Sounds’ 2012 Intended Play Sampler hits shelves on January 14. This (insanely) budget-priced vinyl sampler showcases new tracks and now-classics from the Matador/True Panther syndicate circa 2011-2012, and much like the Cherry Red sampler from which this LP finds inspiration, is destined to rank at #1 on all music retail charts.

Oh, did we mention its costs $1.98!?!

The comp features unreleased tracks from: THE YOUNG (Austin, TX – Matador debut Spring 2012), CEREMONY (Rohnert Park, CA – Hysteria 7” coming February 2012), LEE RANALDO (from
Between the Times & The Tides, March 20), PERFUME GENIUS (sophomore album, Put Your
Back Into It
, February ), STEPHEN MALKMUS & THE JICKS (unreleased track from Mirror Traffic
sessions) and True Panther bros, TANLINES.

The album also features 2011 favorites, GIRLS (from Father, Son, Holy Ghost on True Panther), KURT VILE (from So Outta Reach EP), ESBEN & THE WITCH (Hexagons EP, first time on vinyl), FUCKED UP (from the David Comes To Life companion 7″) & COLD CAVE (exclusive re-mix/remaster of the Cherish The Light Years favorite).

Revisit your favorites from 2011, and get a preview of 2012 from your friends at Matador Records and True
Panther Sounds for under two dollars!

1 THE YOUNG – Don’t Hustle For Love*
2 KURT VILE – Life’s A Beach

Kurt Vile – new live dates, video, interview and Rough Trade’s albums of the year

By Stuart on Tuesday, November 15th, 2011
YouTube Preview Image

Posted yesterday on the La Blogothèque website was the ‘Take Away Show’ they filmed with Kurt and the Violators back in May.  They take to the streets of Paris to run through stripped-back version “Baby’s Arms” to a sparse crowd consisting of passing locals and business men. Watch more from the Take Away shows here.

As 2011 comes to a close we’re starting to see the barrage emergence of  end of year lists.  One of the more respected of these (at least for us in the UK) is Rough Trade Shop’s top ten and Smoke Ring For My Halo comes in at number 3!  Needless to say we’re all stoked for Kurt, ordering from Rough Trade also gets you an exclusive recording of his in-store performance at Rough Trade East from May 2011 as a bonus disc.  Of course, you can still buy it from us too.

Whilst the east coast had all the Violators live action recently, I’m happy to share the news Kurt has more shows lined up, starting 2012 by joining Thurston Moore for some dates, followed by another full-band European tour, including an NME awards show in London.  Kurt and the Violators also play the previously mentioned Australia and New Zealand shows, starting in a few weeks time. All dates below.

Lastly, Pitchfork yesterday ran a feature on the artwork for the newly released So Outta Reach EP as they quizzed Kurt on the series of photos that adorn the EP’s cover.  Questions such as ‘were the photos staged?’, ‘how much tequila does it take to knock Kurt Vile out?’ and ‘how many times did you really get fired from your last job?’ are all answered here.

Fucked Up and Kurt Vile rocking down under

By Stuart on Monday, October 17th, 2011

Always partying the hardest and touring the furthest, Fucked Up and Kurt Vile (along with the Violators) both head for warmer climates with tours south of the equator this winter.  It’ll be Kurt’s first time ever to Australia and New Zealand, whilst Fucked Up aren’t strangers to the land down under – though they may be strangers to some of the 50,000 capacity stadiums they’ll be playing whilst supporting the Foo Fighters.

Tenacious D also support on the FF tour, meaning Matador’s favourite frenemy of 2011 (friend/enemy) will be sharing the stage too. We can only assume that hilarity will ensue.

Those all important dates:

Kurt Vile and The Violators

Thu-Dec-01 – Auckland, NZ Kings Arms Tavern

Sat-Dec-03 -Perth, AUS The Bakery

Sun-Dec-04 -Melbourne, AUS Corner Hotel

Tue-Dec-06 – Sydney, AUS Oxford Art Factory

Dec 8 –  Sydney Football Stadium

Dec 10 –  Gold Cost Metricon Stadium

Kurt Vile on World Cafe today at 2:00PM EDT

By Hector on Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Fans of Kurt Vile and/or record label blogs may be aware that a few months ago, Philadelphia’s Kurt Vile took part in hometown station WXPN’s Free At Noon concert series, which was broadcast on WXPN and on the web. If you missed that show and/or the broadcast, you’ll be delighted to know that a portion of the show will be airing on today’s installment of XPN’s World Cafe. It all starts at 2:00PM EDT, and can be heard on 88.5FM in Philly or at xpn.org.

Interpol and Kurt Vile on WFMU’s Primavera Sound broadcast

By Hector on Friday, May 27th, 2011

Pictured: Pavement at last year's festival

This is WFMU’s third year broadcasting from Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival, and I daresay they’re really getting the hang of it. This year two of Matador’s finest will be featured on WFMU’s Primavera broadcasts. Tune in tonight at 7:00PM EDT to hear Interpol, and tomorrow at 5:45PM EDT for Kurt Vile & The Violators.

WFMU’s predictably stellar Primavera broadcast schedule can be found here. Listening can be accomplished at 91.1FM in the New York City area, 90.1FM in the Hudson Valley, and online at wfmu.org.

Thurston Moore / Kurt Vile Summer Tour

By Gerard on Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

In what’s likely to be one of the hotter tickets of Summer 2011, Thurston Moore and Kurt Vile & The Violators are hooking up for 7 North American dates this July in support of both of their most recent album, the former’s upcoming ‘Demolished Thoughts’, and Vile’s wildly acclaimed ‘Smoke Ring For My Halo’.  Additional dates for both — sadly, only playing in tandem from July 18 to the 30th — are listed below.

Late-breaking SXSW news: Kurt Vile at the WFMU showcase, 12:00 midnight CST

By Hector on Friday, March 18th, 2011

If, like most good folk, you keep up with the whats and whys of America’s favorite freeform radio station, WFMU, or if, like most of the music industry, you are in Austin for SXSW, you may have come across the glaring “Special Guest TBA” in the midnight slot of tonight’s WFMU’s SXSW showcase at Barbarella (611 Red River, right in the heart of the fabled 6th Street red light district). Meme-conscious readers may have noted the day of the showcase and assumed that the ever-resourceful WFMU had snared the first-ever live performance by tween sensation Rebecca Black, but if I do say so myself the actual truth is even better: tonight’s Special Guest at the WFMU showcase is Philadelphia’s own Kurt Vile, whose new album Smoke Ring For My Halo is still just as crazily good as we’ve been saying for a while now.

If you happen to be stuck in some cultural backwater that doesn’t even have its very own Stevie Ray Vaughan statue, fear not, because WFMU will be broadcasting the entire showcase, starting at 9:00PM EST/8:00PM CST, at 91.1FM and online at wfmu.org. Those of you who are familiar with time zones will be aware that that means Kurt is on at 1:00AM EST, which is technically Saturday, which kind of screws up the Rebecca Black reference from earlier in this post. What can I say.

Matador’s Cavalcade Of Stars At SXSW (And Events That Aren’t Actually Part Of SXSW)

By Gerard on Monday, March 14th, 2011

(scenes from SXSW 2005 : Matador co-owner, Austin resident for all of 15 minutes politely instructs a motorist to “go the fuck back where you came from” before recognizing his dog’s veterinarian)

It’s that time of year, when the fair of city of Austin is besieged by thousands of aspiring musicians, label creeps, bloggers, tech pimps, cinema parasites and self-styled marketing reptiles, all of ‘em urinating in my front garden on their way to and from some dubious “showcase” or launch party designed to appeal to their MOST CRAVEN INSTINCTS. I watch all of this from my front porch, my air rifle sitting atop a cooler of Guyaki Yerba Matte, wondering exactly how much jail time I’d serve for shooting the bluetooth earpiece off the skull of a gentleman trying to negotiate a contract at the foot of my driveway.

At which point, I’m reminded that he’s actually a guest in my home and our conference call that I’ve been ignoring is already 10 minutes old. Where are my manners?  Sure, Austin’s chock-a-block with SCHMUCKS ON THE MAKE this week, but who am I to point an accusatory finger at these lovely visitors when they provide this label with such a fabulous opportunity to hawk our wares?  The following Matador artists are playing (too many times) in Austin this week.  Shows marked * will require an SXSW badge or wristband for priority entry ; happily, such gigs are in the overwhelming minority compared to the open-to-the-great unwashed public events listed below.  I look forward to seeing you around town this week, and thank you again for keeping Austin, TX’s property values well above the national average.

By Hector on Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

As part of Matador’s continued efforts to spread the word about WFMU’s fundraising marathon Gerard is forcing me to I’m happy to bring you the following news regarding tonight’s Best Show On WFMU, this year’s final attempt by our friend Tom Scharpling to separate you from your money (for a very, very good cause):

Kurt Vile (the man/myth/legend behind the stunning Smoke Ring For My Halo, out today on all popular formats), Ted Leo (star of Reginald Van Voorst’s Broadway musical The Brutalist Bricks), and A.C. Newman (inspiration for the character “Carl Newman” from the motion picture Moves: The Rise & Rise Of The New Pornographers) will all be joining Tom on the air tonight. We really don’t know what’s going to happen, but if it’s anything like last week’s show with Ted and Carl, it’ll be must-listen radio, plus you can get cool prizes for pledging money (including a signed Smoke Ring test pressing and the already-infamous “Rated GG” 7″ single). WFMU can be found at 91.1FM on your NY/NJ radio dial, or at wfmu.org.

Finally, lest you think we’re done talking about Kurt on his release day, please note that in addition to lending his talents to WFMU, Mr. Vile will be playing not once, not twice, but thrice at some of New York’s finest recordmongers this evening: 5PM at Academy Records in Williamsburg (with Thurston Moore & Bill Nace’s Northampton Wools), 7PM at Generation Records, and 9PM at Other Music. Who loves ya, indie retail?

Kurt Vile – album release, Pitchfork session, NYC instores and tour

By Gabe on Monday, March 7th, 2011

Today (UK/Europe) and tomorrow (North America) see the release Kurt Vile’s latest/greatest album, Smoke Ring For My Halo (purchase the album here).

Pitchfork, who today revealed that they really like the record, also shot Kurt and the Violators on a cold ass rooftop a few weeks back (thanks for covering that Claire!). If you need more convincing that Kurt and the songs from Smoke Ring are pretty special, well, here you go:

Kurt continues his indie retail takeover with THREE New York City instores tomorrow (Tuesday, March 8th): 5PM at Academy Williamsburg with Northampton Wools (Thurston Moore & Bill Nace), 7PM at Generation and 9PM at Other Music.
