Coming March 20, Lee Ranaldo’s ‘Between The Times & The Tides’

By Gerard on Thursday, November 10th, 2011

“Songs can go a million different ways,” declares Lee Ranaldo in the liner notes for his forthcoming Matador solo album, ‘Between The Times & The Tides’, and let me be the first to accuse the Sonic Youth guitarist / not-often-enough vocalist of severe hyperbole. The kinetic, crafted results on ‘Between…’ are more in the several thousand territory, but it’s most certainly a record that will amaze even the most ardent followers of Ranaldo’s work.  Joined by an all-star cast including Nels Cline, Alan Licht, John Medeski, bassist Irwin Menken and longtime associate Steve Shelley (and featuring cameos from old friends Jim O’Rourke and Bob Bert), the album is equal parts smart, confident and loose in a manner that recalls some of our favorite rock’n'roll projects…yet sounds like a fantastic new band that was apparently being assembled right under our noses.

Fresh off a Bell House date last month supporting Wild Flag, Lee and a lineup featuring Alan Licht, Irwin Menken and Steve Shelley will be playing Glasslands, Friday December 16.   2012 tour dates will announced when we have ‘em, and look forward to preorder info from the Matador Store and other outlets shortly as well.

Ritualistic Love Energy from Thurston Moore, “Circulation”

By Nils on Thursday, July 14th, 2011

In which our dashing hero Thurston Moore presents a hypnotic music video for the menstruation-themed “Circulation”, from his solo album Demolished Thoughts, which The AV Club called “an album of deeply psychedelic unplugged love songs…abstract poetry that eventually congeals into a sticky hash-ball of searching, sexuality, and sadness.”

($5 now at Amazon!)

Of the video, Thurston sez: “Circulation, the 2nd video from Demolished Thoughts (after the dream cloud love + war visuals of “Benediction” by the mysterious, elusive director Josef Marie) – was inspired by the free-spirit poet/artist girls of Northampton Massachusetts who would explode and levitate into expressionistic transcendence whenever cool records would spin by local DJs Bill Nace, Jake Meghinsky and, when asked (rarely) – T Moore hisself. After being entranced and inspired by this ritualistic love energy it was decided by TM and Rose Mackey, one of the leading lights of this wild heart gang, to combine forces. Rose, a film director by devotion, and TM, who was looking to visualize his jam “Circulation” came together, employed the sensitive eye of Andrew Kesin, long running chief administrator of TM’s own Ecstatic Peace record label, to capture the magic touch of dance and music….. ——- and we all shine on.”

Download Thurston Moore’s “Circulation” MP3

By Robby on Thursday, May 5th, 2011

“Circulation is about menstrual cycles, menstruation blood, and the year 2012 when the Goddess of Destruction, the Goddess of Creation and the Goddess of Nurturing all come together and rise as Isis to bring the Earth to a new Matriarchy. We’ll of course be in bed, drinking wine, smoking cigarettes and playing scratchy jazz records on a turntable on the nightstand.” – TM

Last week we offered up an early listen to another track from Thurston Moore‘s forthcoming album ‘Demolished Thoughts‘ via a handy facebook gadget. Today, we’re happy to present the track to you here in mp3 format, straight from the Matablog:

Thurston Moore – “Benediction”, First MP3 from ‘Demolished Thoughts’

By Gerard on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

As mentioned earlier this month, May 24 marks the release date for the new 2XLP / compact disc / digital album from Thurston Moore, ‘Demolished Thoughts’.   The Beck-produced 9 song collection is an achingly beautiful work that ranks amongst Moore’s most nuanced and personal. Though we’re still a ways off from revealing Thurston’s touring plans for the summer, we’re pleased to reveal the first MP3 from ‘Demolished Thoughts’, the album’s opening song, “Benediction”.

Coming May 24 : Thurston Moore’s ‘Demolished Thoughts’ (LP/CD/digital album)

By Gerard on Friday, March 11th, 2011

On Tuesday May 24*, Matador will be releasing ‘Demolished Thoughts’, the 4th solo album from Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore (5th if you count 1998′s ‘Root’) and the first to be produced by Beck Hansen.   Recorded in Los Angeles and Northampton, MA this past autumn & winter, with a title culled from The Faith’s “It’s Time”, ‘Demolished Thoughts’ is an equally beautiful and brooding work ; while there’s more than a few tonal similarities to some of your favorite Moore compositions from years past, the execution this time around is nothing short of staggering.  No disrespect to 1995′s ‘Psychic Hearts’ or 2007′s ‘Trees Outside The Academy’ is intended on our part when we promise ‘Demolished Thoughts’ burnishes Thurston’s rep as a classic songwriter in ways we never anticipated when this album was first being talked about last year.

In addition to Moore’s guitars and vocals, other players include violinist Samara Lubelski (she of prior Moore recordings and touring, her own solo works, Metal Mountains, Hall Of Fame, Tower Recordings, Metabolismus, etc.), harpist Mary Lattimore (also heard on Kurt Vile’s latest), bassist Bram Inscore, drummer Joey Waronker and Beck.

Live performance info, a pre-release MP3 and other details to follow in this space.

Sonic Youth play London NYE show

By Stuart on Friday, October 22nd, 2010

As previously reported by our buddies over at ATP you’re in for a treat if you happen to be in London this new years eve as there’s an amazing gig with Sonic Youth headlining a 4-band bill. Make sure to get down there early to see Factory Floor opening the party, followed by The Pop Group and the ‘ATP house band’ Shellac, with Mr Stuart Braithwaite spinning records between sets.

Not a bad start to 2011!

Elvis @ 21?

By Stuart on Friday, July 16th, 2010

Well, as far as rumours for the Lost Weekend go that might be a little far fetched, but Savage Pencil took the opportunity to imagine how Thurston Moore might enjoy the Matador birthday celebrations in Vegas a little too much later this year.

You can see the comic strip for yourself in the latest edition of The Wire magazine and you can find more of Edwin Pouncey’s excellent Savage Pencil work here.

“The Lost Weekend” – Matador 21 In Las Vegas, Tickets On Sale This Friday, July 9

By Gerard on Monday, July 5th, 2010

Tickets for “The Lost Weekend” aka Matador’s 21st birthday celebrations at The Palms will go on sale this Friday morning at 9am, PST. Here’s the details you’ve been hassling all of us about over the last week (and don’t think we don’t appreciate it)

a) Tickets/Pricing : An initial quantity will be on sale Friday for $SOLD. .After the $SOLD tickets sell out, the price increases to $SOLD.  A Ticketfly.com link will be posted on this site on Thursday, July 8th.  Starting Friday, you’ll have the opportunity to reserve standard rooms at the Palms for the discounted rate of $SOLD per night (the full 3 nights of the festival, only). The rooms feature two double bed and occupancy of up to 4 persons is allowed. The above rate is only available when purchasing tickets thru us. If you are interested in upgrading to a larger room or a suite you will be able to do so after purchasing the standard room. TICKETS FOR THE 3 NIGHTS  + ROOMS are being sold jointly — we’re not selling tickets to the shows separately at this time, nor are we selling tickets for individual nights.

(ADDENDUM -i) A limited number of 3-day tickets priced at  $SOLD—with no Palms reservation required — will be available Friday morning at 9am PST  via Ticketfly.com

ii)  if, for example, you’re buying 4 tickets to the shows, the $SOLD per night hotel fee can cover up to 4 people.  $SOLD over 3 nights divided by 4 is hopefully not an crazy amount to charge for rooms in a world class resort).

B) VIP tickets. A limited number of VIP packages will be available at $SOLD — details about what you’ll get for the $SOLD are forthcoming. You’ll have the ability to upgrade from the regular tickets, assuming the VIP tickets aren’t sold out.

C) Venue. The room in question is the 2100 seat Pearl at the Palms.

D) MORE BANDS. OK, we’re working on it. But in addition to the 19 artists confirmed on the above poster, we can confirm the original lineup of COME — Thalia Zedek, Chris Brokaw, Sean O’Brien and Arthur Johnson — will be participating. Actually, we already know who some of the other bands are, we’re just trying to drag this out.    MORE MATABLOG CONTENT between now and October!

E) Set times -  we’ll post these the week before the event.

F) These shows are open to all ages.  However, access to the casino floor is limited to those 21 and over.

F) WHAT ABOUT LAS VEGAS HUMANS?  Las Vegas’ Zia Records is selling 50 tickets to “The Lost Weekend” starting Friday, July 9.  You’ll need a Nevada I.D.  Reservations at the Palms are not required to purchase these tickets.

(ADDENDUM II :

INFORMATION FOR TICKETS AVAILABLE IN LAS VEGAS

Zia Records

4225 South Eastern Avenue

Las Vegas, NV 89119-5485

702-735-4942

Zia Records

702-233-4942

Tickets will go onsale at both stores at 10:00am on Friday, July 9th via lottery. By overwhelming demand by Nevada Residents we will be increasing the amount of tickets available (50 X 2 = 100) . There is a two ticket limit. Nevada state ID required for purchase. Any questions please email 21@matadorecords.com

As mentioned previously in this space, Matador will be celebrating the label’s 21st anniversary this October and this much we can finally confirm : there will be 3 nights of shows starting Friday October 1, and concluding Sunday October 3 at the Palms Casino & Resort In Las Vegas, NV. We’ll be dropping further hints about the amazing lineup in the days ahead, but a final announcement and information about how to purchase tickets will be made here at the trusty Matablog on July 5. Are you as psyched as we are?  (hopefully yes, because we’re getting in for free).

(ADDENDUM – there’s been a bit of confusion so just to clear things up, tickets DO NOT GO ON SALE JULY 5.  We’ll merely be announcing the on sale date/time on July 5.  thanks – GC)

No sooner than we announced Sonic Youth were playing Boston’s Wilbur Theatre on November 23 than an internal message was circulated stating said date was not supposed to be revealed to the public for another week. Good luck getting the genie back the bottle — it’s a slippery slope from a Matablog post to a mention on The View or an angry editorial from Tass.

Anyhow, even if the incidents are completely unrelated, we’ve learned today that Sonic Youth have added another Boston show (again, at the historic Wilbur Theatre) on November 22. If you wanna give me all the credit, I’m happy to take it. There’s nothing more important to us than THE PUBLIC’S RIGHT TO KNOW.

Newsweek Story That Would Be Widely Re-Bloggified if Not In Newsweek

By Nils on Friday, June 12th, 2009

synewsweekSonic Youth is the top story on Newsweek’s site today and this feature will be in the magazine next week.  (direct link)

I usually don’t blog about press, but this is a great piece about how culture suffers when art is marginalized, and (if you’ll allow me to stretch) the discouraging (and uniquely American?) absorption by purportedly open-minded indie/slacker types of Conservative disdain toward intellectualism and forward-thinking art.

“The retrenchment behind indie lines is more the mainstream’s loss than it is Sonic Youth’s. So while industry watchers prefer to fret over the declining sales power of Britney Spears’s comeback records, the rest of us should be more concerned about what happens when art music sends fewer and fewer ambassadors to the straight world.”

It’s only a couple weeks into Newsweek’s relaunch (in which it concedes weekly news recapping to the Internet, opting instead for “reported narratives” and “argued essays”) and hey, looks like a decent strategy so far.

We don’t know who this “audio perv” person is, but I’m betting it isn’t a pseudonym for Paul Schaffer.
