In celebration of their new album, The Eternal, Sonic Youth will take over L.A.s hottest new record shop. For one day only, on June 9th, Origami Vinyl will become Sonic Youth’s House of Shifting Plates and Ridiculous Juice, as dubbed by the band itself. Origami’s wall of featured albums will display selections hand-picked by Thurston, Kim, Lee, Steve and Mark – ranging from Okkyung Lee to John Lennon – as well as a wide range of Sonic Youth and Sonic Youth related releases. The band has also invited their friends Pocahaunted and Shiloe to play sets at the store. Deathbomb Arc, a local label in Los Angeles that has released some Thurston Moore stuff on vinyl, gave us the following very limited edition goodies to sell in-store:
Gang Wizard / Algebrassiere
split 12″
originally co-released between Deathbomb Arc & Ecstatic Peace
Test pressings packaged in exclusive handmade art by Melissa
Kinsman.
From 5:30 till 6:30 on June 9th, Melissa will be in-store to
personalize the art on these for the lucky buyers.
Thurston Moore / Men Who Can’t Love
split 12″
originally released as a part of the Thrash Sabbatical box set by
Deathbomb Arc
Overrun of this record from the box set has been hiding at DBA HQ for
some time.
Now repackaged in exclusive handmade art by Josh Taylor.
Origami has also teamed up with local artist, Seizer, to create a special limited edition silkscreen print of the art attached. The art poster will be limited to 50 copies, hand numbered and signed, available for pre-order the day of the event.
As if that weren’t enough, Two Boots Pizza will create a special “Eternal” pie that resembles the album’s artwork. Slices of this pie will be given away free during the event at Origami. Phil, owner of Two Boots and long-time friend of the band, is excited to be a part of the band’s new release.

Starting today, iLike is streaming the full Sonic Youth album from their socially-aware web site.
Streaming of full albums might seem like so April 28, 2009 to all you loyal Buy Early Get Now-ists, but rest assured that no one streaming this album on iLike will get a Live LP as part of the promised “special experiences” for the winners of the accompanying “Trickster Challenge” quiz contest.
Oh… and while we’re talking about Buy Early Get Now, a new song has been posted to your account. It’s a demo from 1987 called “Castle Catholic Block (Demo)”. It pretty much rips.

This came out so beautifully that we decided to share a few pictures with you. (Click on the images for full-size versions.) The record comes out on June 9, and if you act fast, you can probably still score the live bonus LP as part of Buy Early Get Now.

Cover painting by John Fahey. Clock photo by Kim Gordon. Not Cool/Cool by John Moloney. Other artwork by Clarence Major, Gene Moore and Jutta Koether. Johnny Thunders photo by Danny Fields.

These pictures unfortunately can’t capture the heavy stock cover, or the special varnishes and finishes.

We’re pleased to launch the first MP3 from Sonic Youth’s upcoming album The Eternal (June 8 Europe, June 9 North America). It’s entitled “Sacred Trickster” and can be downloaded here:
Sacred Trickster (mp3)
“Sacred Trickster” is a 2:10 out-of-the gate hardcore matinee track with Kim singing salutes to French painter Yves Klein and Western Massachusetts noise artist Noise Nomads. It sets the tone for ‘The Eternal’, which comprises twelve tunes that are a fireworks display of Sonic Youth touchstones. From the primal no wave attack of its earliest days, to the radical chording and song structures of its ’90s period, to the more focused and contemporary explorations of the last five years. This their 16th album, and their first for the Matador label, consolidates their move to a more lush, sensual sound as displayed on last album ‘Rather Ripped’ – but if anything punchier and cleaner, and now backstopped by the addition of Mark Ibold (Pavement, Dustdevils) on bass.
As many of you are already aware, we have a Buy Early Get Now campaign running for this release. If you preorder (& pay) for the album at selected indie retailers now, you’ll get lots of extra material that won’t be available if you wait until June. You get:
- a code to stream the album early, from April 28
- bonus limited exclusive vinyl live LP on street date recorded at the River To River Festival July 4th, 2008 Concert in Battery Park NYC, either in your mailbox or your favorite record store (while supplies last)
- an exclusive poster
- exclusive additional mp3 downloads of outtakes & more live material
- early access to concert tickets in the US (especially if you sign up now)
Check buyearlygetnow.com for more info. (After April 28, you will also be able to preorder online.)
Plus — SECRET SHOW NEXT WEEK! We are also excited to announce that Sonic Youth will be playing an exclusive show NEXT MONDAY, 27 April, at The Scala, tickets available to purchase online from 10am tomorrow Tuesday 21 April, £25, doors 7.30pm.
US tour dates this summer should be announced very soon. New Yorkers can see the band play at the annual noise fest No Fun on May 16.
Finally, news just in that the band have been confirmed to play at the My Bloody Valentine-curated ATP Nightmare Before Christmas to be held at Butlins Holiday Resort in Minehead from December 4th – 6th, 2009.

This weekend, I’ll be globbing on the Zinka and heading to Palm Springs. It’s not about Sir Paul or Robert Smith although, admittedly, it’s a tad about TG and bear hugging this guy.
Rather, I will be suffering through Broachella to hand deliver a test pressing (approved hopefully) of Sonic Youth’s new album to spin at the Ace Hotel on Saturday from 2-4pm.
The Cave Singers will be teeing off the event by playing from 1-2pm out by the pool. Embedded to the right is a flyer with a RSVP if you care to attend. (click on it to make it bigger)
Thanks to the Ace Hotel for sorting this out and prepare thyselves for a big order of those famous snow cones. We’re always looking for new ways to cool off 10,000 Marbles.
Programming note: This having Matador bands host SY listening parties might actually turn into something, so stay tuned.

As Gerard posted a couple months ago, Matador will be celebrating Record Store Day with three exclusive, limited-edition vinyl releases.
Pavement Live in Köln LP
Jay Reatard / Sonic Youth split 7″
Sonic Youth / Beck split 7″
- The Pavement concert was recorded in Köln in 1998 and is a NOT the live LP included with the recent Buy Early Get Now campaign. The cover image is similar but in a different color.
- The Jay Reatard / Sonic Youth split features demo versions of songs from their upcoming albums (late August and June 9 respectively): Hang Them All and No Garage.
- The Sonic Youth / Beck split features each band covering the other: Pay No Mind (from Mellow Gold) and Green Light (from Evol).
Each is strictly limited to 2500 copies… and… pay close attention… there are extremely limited colored vinyl, numbered copies of each one, distributed randomly out there. We’re talking in the double digits.
To find the Record Store Day retailer located nearest you, visit the Record Store Day homepage. There are also exclusive releases from other labels to celebrate indie retail and help keep record store communities alive. Good luck and good shopping.

(all SY photos in this post by Chris Habib)
As announced previously, the new Sonic Youth double LP/CD/digital album, ‘The Eternal’ is coming out on June 9. However, the album will be available to those taking part in Matador’s Buy Early Get Now campaign on April 28.
Along with your preorder of ‘The Eternal’ on LP or CD, you’ll get an instant stream of the album when BEGN launches on April 28, and later (either picking it up at your fave local record store or through the auspices of the U.S. Postal Service) a bonus limited edition live LP* culled from Sonic Youth’s July 4, 2008 show in Battery Park at the River To River Festival, which will contain an exclusive poster. Additional MP3′s will be delivered via the BEGN site before or after the album’s physical release date (June 9).
The album can be preordered from a trusted local retailer starting March 24 or directly from Matador on April 28.
Though the full list of participating record stores will be available on March 24, retailers interested in being involved should contact Mike Venutolo at Matador Direct (mike@matadordirect.com)
A separate but equally thrilling variation on Buy Early Get Now for our friends in the United Kingdom and other territories will be announced in this space shortly.
*- while supplies last
Though we’re keeping a rather tight lid on the musical contents to ‘The Eternal’ between now and late April, there’s a somewhat truncated preview that’s just been posted at Newsweek.com.

(album artwork features a painting by John Fahey)
Sonic Youth‘s 16th album, ‘The Eternal’, will be released on double vinyl, compact disc, and digital album by Matador Records on June 9. Produced by John Agnello and the band, ‘The Eternal’ not only marks Sonic Youth’s return to the independent label sphere (titles on their own SYR label excepted) after a long association with Geffen, but more importantly, ranks as one of their more inspired efforts in a 28 year career.

(photograph by Andrew Kesin)
Recorded through November and December of last year at the band’s Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, NJ, ‘The Eternal’ features many firsts for a Sonic Youth album, including a number of shared vocals between Kim, Thurston, and Lee, and the studio debut of former Pavement/Dustdevils bassist Mark Ibold, a member of Sonic Youth’s touring band for the past few years.
The band’s current extracurricular activities are as always, quite varied. The Kunsthalle in Dusseldorf, Germany is now hosting the touring museum exhibition SONIC YOUTH ETC.: SENSATIONAL FIX, which focuses on the band’s multidisciplinary work since the band’s formation in 1981, including their collaborations with visual artists, filmmakers, designers and musicians. Kim Gordon launches a clothing line, Mirror/Dash, at Urban Outfitters on February 16, and is showing at The Armory Show in NYC March 5-8. Lee Ranaldo, with co-conspirator Leah Singer, just opened installations at the Konsthall in Stockholm and the CNEAI in Paris, and he has a piece in the travelling exhibition “Bad Moon Rising 3″, currently at Boots Contemporary Art Space in St. Louis. A Beck/Sonic Youth split 7″ is being released by Matador on April 18 for Record Store Day. And the band recently collaborated with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (along with former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and mixed-media sound composer Takehisa Kosugi) on a work celebrating, and being performed for, Cunningham’s 90th birthday on April 16 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Upcoming SY shows include April gigs in Austria and Germany (including the closing of SENSATIONAL FIX in Dusseldorf) and May 16 at the No Fun Festival in Brooklyn. They will be touring throughout the summer in support of ‘The Eternal’.
More information on these and the many, many other activities since the 2006 release of their last album, ‘Rather Ripped’, can be found here.
Of ‘The Eternal’, Matador’s Gerard Cosloy says, “We’ve not had a record in our recent history that’s been the subject of nearly as much speculation and anticipation. Suffice to say we’re pretty amazed at the way the band delivered something this neoteric while still sounding like, well, themselves. Less of a reinvention and perhaps more to do with a particularly awesome dozen songs.”
Matador will shortly announce a Buy Early Get Now scheme for the album with some very interesting bonus material.
Sonic Youth are:
Steve Shelley
Lee Ranaldo
Kim Gordon
Thurston Moore
Mark Ibold
Track listing:
1. Sacred Trickster
2. Anti-Orgasm
3. Leaky Lifeboat (for Gregory Corso)
4. Antenna
5. What We Know
6. Calming The Snake
7. Poison Arrow
8. Malibu Gas Station
9. Thunderclap For Bobby Pyn
10. No Way
11. Walkin Blue
12. Massage The History

(Sonic Youth’s) Thurston Moore and scandanavian saxophone demon Mats Gustafsson are playing the following shows together starting next week. It’s a big enough deal as is, but when you add a Cambridge date featuring a reunion of The Sickness (trunk of the Groinoids/Flesh Missles/Kil Slug/Upsidedowncross/Adolf Satan family tree — eat my dust, Pete Frame!), you’ve got the makings of an historic event.

You might recall a couple of months ago someone on this blog engaged in the distasteful practice of lording it over the rest of you just how terrific Sonic Youth’s 4th of July show was. This was exactly the sort of elitism and hatred of real america we’ve heard so much about over the past several days, and I can’t for the life of me understand why this blog doesn’t have a proper editor to put a halt to such things.
Fortunately, Jersey City’s WFMU, a free form, listener supporter broadcaster staffed by genuine salt-of-the-earth types (plumbers, hockey moms, jai alai dads, xtreme motocross uncles), have made the entire set available for on-demand enjoyment in streaming form. The set list was as follows (culled from WFMU’s Beware of The Blog) :
WFMU Intro / She Is Not Alone / Bull in the Heather / Silver Rocket / Skip Tracer / The Sprawl / The World Looks Red / Jams Run Free / Hey Joni / Cross the Breeze / The Wonder / Hypertstation / Drunken Butterfly / Making the Nature Scene / Pink Steam / Schizophrenia / 100%.

(Ed. note : the ‘Sensational Fix’ exhbition continues to hit galleries around the world — full scoop and visual hints of what to expect are below…cue up the press release machine!)

SONIC YOUTH etc. : SENSATIONAL FIX – MUSEION, BOLZANO/BOZEN, ITALY (UNTIL
04.01.2009)
Exhibition:
Most people probably know Sonic Youth (Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, and Steve Shelley) as an experimental guitar band, and to a lesser extent as the multidisciplinary cultural protagonists they have been ever since the collective surfaced in 1981. From day one, Sonic Youth has been exploring and mapping unknown cultural territories through their activities as a band and as four individual musicians, visual artists or cultural entrepreneurs, each member with his or her specific ties to and within the international cultural scene. Through collaborations with musicians, visual artists, filmmakers, fashion designers, writers and other equally creative spirits, Sonic Youth expanded their artistic potential, which by now 27 years later could be defined as a true Sonic Universe.

Before the Sonic Boom, in 1981, both Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo were trained as artists who upon arrival in New York City in the late 1970s started playing in bands rather than dedicating themselves fully to the production of visual art. This was the case with many of their artist friends as well, like Glenn Branca, Richard Prince or Robert Longo. The artist Dan Graham was a central figure in this constellation of visual artists/musicians, and was known to schlep his barely portable tape recorder to concerts of punk rock
and no wave bands to record these performances, which were often held in art galleries and so-called art lofts. Back then, visual art and experimental music seemed to be one and the same energy, and the natural crossover between the two, as was apparent in those days, laid the foundations for the
multidisciplinary activities of Sonic Youth.

Since the start, the band has been true to their attitude to be unorthodox and to do their own thing, and in their comprehensive output they continued and still continue to amalgamate punk rock’s rebellious posture and DIY attitude with experimental music and conceptual art, a production that in its range and complexity up until today remains unrivalled by that of any other band or artists’ collective.

Their album covers, inner sleeves and inlays have been the carriers of a multifaceted output of art by next to the band members themselves artists such as James Welling, Richard Kern, Dan Graham, Gerhard Richter,
Raymond Pettibon, Mike Kelley, William S. Burroughs, Savage Pencil, Richard Prince, Christopher Wool, and Jeff Wall, to mention a few. Many of Sonic Youth’s album covers are true collages in which material of a broad range of sources is freely put together, evoking relations between that what hardly had been imagined before to exist side by side in a single glance. This approach is triggered by the band’s curiosity about all sorts of subjects, such as beat poetry, avant-garde art and music, late 1970s punk rock, no wave, early 1980s hardcore, experimental noise, stardom, politics. Thurston Moore once defined these eclectic interests as follows: “There’s a fascination with those things, for sure, but hopefully none of those
things are central to what we’re doing. What we’re doing is always inventing itself. I have no terminology for it.”

The exhibition SONIC YOUTH etc. : SENSATIONAL FIX follows a similar collage technique as the band applies for their album covers. Through this multilayered collage we are able to uncover an alternative history of
contemporary culture, while the goal of this exhibition is not so much to give a complete overview of the history of the band and their collaborations, but rather to pinpoint several directions taken by the band,
while taking into account possible future collaborations, as the essence of Sonic Youth is that they constantly redefine their mission. Sonic Death inevitably followed their early credo Sonic Life, but what remains bouncing back and forth in this cycle is eternal renewal. And that’s Sonic Youth.
