The fourth video from the still-excellent (and still-available) Together. Four videos from one album is a record in my tenure, so thanks Canada!
We love the space-ious vibes on this one – I won’t even tell you about our original idea to premiere it with a “live from Comic-Con” correspondence from Jon Wurster Carl Newman. Well, I won’t tell you more than that. Pitchfork debuts the clip, accompanied by an interview with A.C. Newman himself. Watch the video (directed by Jon Busby):

We’re in the midst of a heavy period of activity for The New Pornographers ; in addition to a new batch of US dates (below), the band’s “Sweet Talk” video for Oxfam’s Gulf oil spill relief efforts (directed by Shannon Hart Reed has just been nominated for an Emmy in the “Societal Concerns” category. Though Record Store Day is a slightly less important cause than those supervised by Oxfam, it’s obviously one very close to our hearts, and saturday’s chapter in this annual celebration of independent music retailing will feature a limited edition 7″ of ‘Together”s “Moves” b/w the unreleased B-side “Drug Deal Of The Heart”, plus a download code for said tracks and the Tom Scharpling-directed video for the a-side.

As announced on the official Coachella page, stage times are out now for all bands playing this weekends festival and you’ll find Matador and True Panther bands well represented, without any clashes (…hopefully) too!
Surrounded as we are by an ever-increasing number of cameras in our daily lives, we begin to lose ownership of our own images. Anonymous technology is analyzing, categorizing and archiving our very existence.
Interpol, in collaboration with David Lynch, Andi Watson, HPX and Wieden & Kennedy present a visual juxtaposition of the seen and the unseen. As the observer becomes the observed, the performance explores the deepening layers of covert surveillance, morphing data acquisition into visual beauty and questioning the fine line between the viewer and the voyeur.
Featuring the premiere of the David Lynch animation “I Touch A Red Button Man” for the song “Lights”, and utilizing real-time visual manipulation from Seattle-based HPX, the performance will be streamed live to the internet as well as to the audience at Coachella.
To be perfectly frank, we thought about blowing off Record Store Day this year. It’s not that we don’t support record stores – far from it, it’s what 37 of 38 employees prefer – but the huge glut of supposedly limited-edition releases, the scrum to get to the counter in the morning, and then the instant reappearance of many of the records on eBay at inflated sums are all an unintended and unwelcome side-effect of the event.
That said, we couldn’t help ourselves, and neither could three of our artists, so we proudly announce the following limited-edition items. They’re all awesome, they’re all limited, and if you don’t succeed on getting your hands on them on Record Store Day, just remember that the prices on eBay will (most likely) come down over time.
SO, on Saturday, April 16, Matador will have the following RSD exclusives:
From Byrdesdale Garden City in the UK comes the compilation album DAVID’S TOWN. Featuring 11 unreleased tracks from local bands including Gacy and the Boys, Animal Man, Grain and Hateful Coil, in styles varying from DIY to post-punk to power pop, this limited edition from FU-Discs was recorded in Byrdesdale between 1976 and 1979 and not released until now. An essential document of a thriving scene.
Next comes the new 7″ single from THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS, “Moves.” Currently moving up the radio charts, and of course featured in Tom Scharpling’s genius video for the track, it comes with the unreleased B-side “Drug Deal Of The Heart,” recorded at the sessions for the album Together. (Note: the band is playing Coachella on RSD weekend, and then will tour out of there through April and May.)
Finally we have the new 12″ from ESBEN AND THE WITCH, the great trio from Brighton, UK – many of you will have seen one of their great shows at SXSW this month. They just wrapped up their US tour and returned to their homeland. The single is the radio edit of “Chorea” and features a remix of their pounding classic “Eumenides” by Stuart Braithwaite of MOGWAI, along with an entirely unreleased 18-minute version of “Corridors” recorded for The Creators Project and only played at a special installation in London for Karl Sadler‘s Lit Forest. (Note: Esben return to the road in the UK starting this Friday.)
As usual, we will be taking down our webstore in observation of Record Store Day. Get out there, get in line, and spend some money, goddammit!!!
Not much to add here. Directed by Tom Scharpling, full credits below. Purchase the New Pornographers’ fifth album, Together. The band hits the road in the US again soon. ENJOY:

It’s that time of the year again…the SPRING TOUR. Tour buses heat up the interstates, amps are cranked to 11, and pasty skinned indie rock fans awake from their winter hibernations. And lucky for us this spring promises another US Tour from The New Pornographers. A scattering of dates criss-crossing the US, anchored by an appearance at Coachella, and shared with a couple of quality bands. Tickets for all shows go on sale this Friday (Feb 4) except for San Francisco (on sale on Sun, Feb 6) and Cleveland + Cincinnati (on sale on Fri, Feb 11). See you in April!
Our man, Carl Newman (A.C. Newman, The New Pornographers Maestro) wrote a 20 second theme song for the new NBC show, “Perfect Couples” that officially premieres tonight at 8:30pm between “The Office” and “Community”.
If there’s one night for you to watch TV, this is it. TV is good.
Though the above poster is not entirely accurate, we can finally confirm (ie. after everyone else has already reported it) the following members of the Matador / True Panther Sounds family will be appearing at The 12th Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival this coming April 15-17
Interpol
The New Pornographers
Cold Cave
Delorean
Glasser
As for the rest of the bill, well, we all have our favorites, but I’d like to issue a deep personal thank-you to the organizers for NOT BOOKINGTHESE DUDES.
A.C. Newman has composed and performed the theme song for the new NBC primetime series Perfect Couples. It’s a pretty genius song too – at least the 19 seconds we can hear. Click on the above link for the trailer. Preview aired yesterday; show premieres January as part of NBC’s three-hour Thursday comedy block, leading into “The Office.”
Today, Oxfam and The New Pornographers have announced a partnership to help maintain awareness for the ever-developing struggle in the Gulf Coast region following April’s devastating oil spill and ensuing ecological crisis.
As part of their efforts to keep the plight of the Gulf Coast at the forefront of social consciousness heading into a new year, The New Pornographers and Oxfam have created a uniquely awesome music video for the NPs tune “Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk”, that tells the story of the aftermath of the Gulf Coast oil spill in Louisiana and Oxfam’s advocacy efforts on behalf of communities that rely on the coast for their livelihoods. Check it out and SHARE IT, please:
As we close out another calendar year, The New Pornographers and Oxfam respectfully remind you that the Gulf Coast oil spill was not a “2010 issue”, but remains the devastatingly persistent plight of a region, and truly an entire nation. For continued support of Oxfam’s efforts in the Gulf, check back here regularly.

Indeed, tonight, there will be a super-concert at Terminal 5 in New York City as The New Pornographers will join forces with Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, in what can only be described as the Justice League of Awesome, and take the city by storm. To warm up their golden throats and shreddy fingers, the New Pornos will also perform live in a scant few hours on WNYC’s Soundcheck. Listen live on the web at 2PM EST or tune your car radio dial to 93.9FM and 820AM to hear the session in all its stereophonic glory.
Next week sees The New Pornographers jetting over for their last shows of 2010 with a headline show at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire on Thursday, 9th December, before heading down to play The ATP Bowlie weekender on the 10th. Tickets are still available for the London show and can be bought from here.
(above : where taking things way too literally meets no fun whatsoever)
The Grand Rapids Press’ John Serba reports The New Pornographers’ scheduled gig on October 15 at Calvin College has been scrapped. Since the above headline already explains why, you might want to visit another website rather than continue reading. Still here? OK!
The college released a statement explaining, “after weeks of discussion and consideration, the irony of the band’s name was impossible to explain to many. The band’s name, to some, is mistakenly associated with pornography. Consequently, Calvin, to some, was mistakenly associated with pornography. Neither the college nor the band endorses pornography.”
Calvin student activities director Ken Heffner, who books concerts for the college, said refunds would be issued today, and that the cancellation is a “peaceful parting of ways” between the school and the band. The group was scheduled to perform Oct. 15 in the Calvin Fieldhouse Complex. The Calvin box office can be reached at 526-6282.
Keep in mind, this is (allegedly) an institution of higher learning devoted to the liberal arts. And with all due respect to Mr. Heffner and the Calvin board of trustees, decisions like this — or as I like to call ‘em, defacto censorship — can have a chilling effect on free expression. Would Calvin College’s student activities board cancel an appearance by Cannibal Corpse, merely because neither they or the band endorse cannibalism? Would Calvin turn down a chance to award Michigan treasure Doc Dart an honorary doctorate (thus making him “Doctor Doc Dart”) merely because Lansing’s great man of letters once fronted a band called The Crucifucks?
Probably, yes. But that doesn’t make it any less sad and I suspect the entire Calvin College community are the poorer for it.
Double bills featuring two generation-defining acts don’t come along that often and when they do, you can’t risk missing such an occasion for fear of being labeled a cultural cretin. But enough about the Eddie Money/Lou Gramm cruise to the Bahamas, The New Pornographers and Ted Leo & The Pharmacists are playing NYC’s Terminal 5 on Monday, December 6. Presale for tickets starts tomorrow morning.

Matador at 21: The Lost Weekend takes place at the Palms Resort and Casino in Las Vegas from October 1-3, 2010. This event is sponsored by MySpace Music, Altamont and Incase.
We love “Amplified“, ABC News’s online music show with World News Sunday anchor Dan Harris. Smart, candid interviews with good bands, juiced up with lotsa good music and video. Dan delayed his current Iraq trip (apparently Iraqis say “hello” – in English – to mean “goodbye” – and no one knows why) to yap with AC Newman and Kathryn Calder at Lollapalooza. There are at least two things that even I didn’t know in this interview.
If Friday’s webcast of The New Pornographers’ set at Lollapalooza 2010 (above) was your only opportunity to see the band so far this year, prepare your ticket-snatching skills asap, as the band will be hitting select U.S. and Canadian cities again later this Summer and early Autumn.

Tickets for “The Lost Weekend” aka Matador’s 21st birthday celebrations at The Palms will go on sale this Friday morning at 9am, PST. Here’s the details you’ve been hassling all of us about over the last week (and don’t think we don’t appreciate it)
a) Tickets/Pricing : An initial quantity will be on sale Friday for $SOLD. .After the $SOLD tickets sell out, the price increases to $SOLD. A Ticketfly.com link will be posted on this site on Thursday, July 8th. Starting Friday, you’ll have the opportunity to reserve standard rooms at the Palms for the discounted rate of $SOLD per night (the full 3 nights of the festival, only). The rooms feature two double bed and occupancy of up to 4 persons is allowed. The above rate is only available when purchasing tickets thru us. If you are interested in upgrading to a larger room or a suite you will be able to do so after purchasing the standard room. TICKETS FOR THE 3 NIGHTS + ROOMS are being sold jointly — we’re not selling tickets to the shows separately at this time, nor are we selling tickets for individual nights.
(ADDENDUM -i) A limited number of 3-day tickets priced at $SOLD—with no Palms reservation required — will be available Friday morning at 9am PST via Ticketfly.com
ii) if, for example, you’re buying 4 tickets to the shows, the $SOLD per night hotel fee can cover up to 4 people. $SOLD over 3 nights divided by 4 is hopefully not an crazy amount to charge for rooms in a world class resort).
B) VIP tickets. A limited number of VIP packages will be available at $SOLD — details about what you’ll get for the $SOLD are forthcoming. You’ll have the ability to upgrade from the regular tickets, assuming the VIP tickets aren’t sold out.
D) MORE BANDS. OK, we’re working on it. But in addition to the 19 artists confirmed on the above poster, we can confirm the original lineup of COME — Thalia Zedek, Chris Brokaw, Sean O’Brien and Arthur Johnson — will be participating. Actually, we already know who some of the other bands are, we’re just trying to drag this out. MORE MATABLOG CONTENT between now and October!
E) Set times - we’ll post these the week before the event.
F) These shows are open to all ages. However, access to the casino floor is limited to those 21 and over.
F) WHAT ABOUT LAS VEGAS HUMANS? Las Vegas’ Zia Records is selling 50 tickets to “The Lost Weekend” starting Friday, July 9. You’ll need a Nevada I.D. Reservations at the Palms are not required to purchase these tickets.
(ADDENDUM II :

There is a two ticket limit. Nevada state ID required for purchase. Any questions please email 21@matadorecords.com
As mentioned previously in this space, Matador will be celebrating the label’s 21st anniversary this October and this much we can finally confirm : there will be 3 nights of shows starting Friday October 1, and concluding Sunday October 3 at the Palms Casino & Resort In Las Vegas, NV. We’ll be dropping further hints about the amazing lineup in the days ahead, but a final announcement and information about how to purchase tickets will be made here at the trusty Matablog on July 5. Are you as psyched as we are? (hopefully yes, because we’re getting in for free).
(ADDENDUM – there’s been a bit of confusion so just to clear things up, tickets DO NOT GO ON SALE JULY 5. We’ll merely be announcing the on sale date/time on July 5. thanks – GC)

All this togetherness that The New Pornographers have been spreading shows no sign of slowing down, as hot on the heels of last nights sold-out London Electric Ballroom show they’ve announced details for a brace of UK festival dates and headline shows.
They’re heading back this way in September before returning to headline London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire and play the Belle & Sebastian curated ‘Bowlie 2‘ ATP weekend in December – full dates below:
September
5th Electric Picnic Festival, Portlaoise, Ireland
7th Oran Mor, Glasgow
8th Ruby Lounge, Manchester
9th Concorde 2, Brighton
10th End of the Road festival, Larmer Tree Gardens, Dorest

The band also performed “Crash Years” and “What Turns Up In The Dark” live on Mark Riley’s BBC radio show, which you can listen to here (only in the UK, sadly), just skip 12 minutes in.
The New Pornographers performed “Crash Years” on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon yesterday. Neko Case takes the lead vocal and yes, that’s Todd Barry playing the sleigh bell. Dan Bejar was also in the house, and it’s a straight-up loose, joyous performance of a kind rarely seen on broadcast TV. And some serious rock cello moves.
Matador Records is not responsible for any drumstick injuries that may or may not have occurred.
Today sees the anticipated release of the New Pornographers’ fine fifth album Together. Buy it here.
In celebration of the album’s release, Spinner today debuts the first video from Together, for first MP3 “Your Hands (Together)”. The video was directed by Pornographer Blaine Thurier, and totally kicks ass (I apologize):
The band will appear on NBC’s Late Night With Jimmy Fallon tomorrow night, and play a very special show in Woodstock, NY on Thursday (tickets).
Finally, the band will hit the road sooner than you think. Breath it in:

Austin had the original Together Shuttle, Portland made you dance for your tickets, Philly never ran out of free flowing beer, Boston had the most #tweeting participants, Seattle had the highest volume attended, Atlanta and LA were at your favorite local record stores, the list goes on… What’s been so successful about our spring togetherness, has been the individuality of each market’s party. The people, the variety of giveaways, and more! Most all of our #gettogethers have come and gone now in the last two weeks (aside from Cleveland tomorrow, and Phoenix 5/8), and we’ve had a blast with you all! So what could we possibly be posting about…?
