(there will be plenty of time for questions, just as soon as I’m finished with my speech)
Ever notice how government officials (and/or the New York Mets) try to bury stories that don’t entirely flatter themselves on Friday nights or weekends? No? GOOD, you’re just my kind of person! In the spirit of helpfulness (and perhaps acknowledging that every member of our constituency doesn’t read popular music blogs 75 times a day), we’d like to issue the following friendly reminders ;
a) On April 26, Merge (U.S.) and Wichita (UK) will be releasing the new Times New Viking album, ‘Dancer Equired’. We’ve heard it, and no matter what hyperbole our rec. biz pals are throwing around, it’s even better than whatever they’re saying. .
b) On Feb. 22, Jagjaguwar is issuing the 3rd album from The Cave Singers, ‘No Witch’. I’ve not heard this one (damn you, Web Sharrif!), but when we’re promised the new full-length exhibits “a ferocity and bite we’ve yet to see from the band”, you can be certain I’m getting my rabies vaccination cash in order. Hope you do the same.
First off, if these changes have left anyone disappointed or inconvenienced, we’re truly sorry. I’ve been watching videos of the guys in the BP commercials all week trying to strike the right tone for this post, and wouldn’t you know it, MY VIDEO CAMERA IS BROKEN. Bullet dodged.
On the bright side, hey, DEAD MEADOW are playing. The opening VIP gala is still happening at 4pm Friday in the Hardwood Suite with dj sets by Ted Leo and myself. Same room becomes a VIP lounge Friday and Saturday nights, plus late night dj action on Friday (James McNew, Dean Bein) and Saturday (Dave Martin, Robby Morris). Here’s the live entertainment schedule of events. Much like real life, everything is subject to change.

For some people: Burt Reynolds, Larry Merchant, Leslie Nielsen, and Jennifer Aniston to name a few, 2/11 can never be forgotten, it’s their birthday. For sports fans 2/11 marks the day Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson (1990), Dean Smith (UNC) racked up his 600th career coaching win (1987), and Willie Mays became the highest paid player in baseball with an annual salary of $130,000 (1966). Others who are historically inclined remember 2/11 as the day Mandela was freed after 27 years in prison (1990), Dwight Eisenhower became the commander of allied forces in Europe (1943), and Pennsylvania Hospital, the first in America, was opened in large part because of Benjamin Franklin (1752).
So as I’ve demonstrated there are plenty of reasons to never forget 2/11. But in our humble opinion there is no reason more important than Times New Viking and their greatly under appreciated album of last fall, Born Again Revisited. So in doing our part to never forget 2/11, we’re offering a free MP3 download of TNV’s 2/11 Don’t Forget with a few stipulations. 1) you play it loud and often, and 2) you never forget 2/11. We never will.
It’s the greatest thing to hit Pontiac, MI since Wayne Fontes’ hair. Greater, perhaps. As the year comes to an end and the spirit of revisiting things takes us over, we’ve come across the following comment that Jared Phillips (Times New Viking) made to Pitchfork back in January 2008 when discussing life on the road:
I don’t know where the best place we’ve played would be. Probably one of those places that we played with Yo La Tengo that we’ll never get to play again [ laughs ]. Those were all pretty fun but, you know, if it ever happens we’ll be 40 years old by the time we play in a place that big again.
So I guess we’d just like to be the first to say happy 40th to TNV because this coming January good times are rolling through towns from Michigan south to Texas. That’s right like any good combination (chocolate and peanut butter immediately comes to mind), Yo La Tengo and Times New Viking have decided to revisit the road and live performance format together this coming January. If you’re in one of the towns below be sure to catch what should be the chocolate and peanut butter of live shows, for the early part of 2010 at the very least. Tickets are on sale now!!!!

Today we offer the excellent new video for “Born Again Revisited” from Times New Viking’s like-titled fourth full-length album (buy it here, do it right now, it’s their best yet. In this season of opinions and assholes – everybody’s got ‘em – I’ll say it’s EASILY one of the best records of the year).
The band just finished an adult-sized US tour (take note pretenders to the pavement), with more dates to follow in the new year.
Directed by Pelham Johnston and Brandon Reichard, without further ado – “Born Again Revisited”:
As seen in the above clip, Times New Viking always bring their best to the good people of the Twin Cities, and just because it’s a Sunday doesn’t mean they plan on resting. Today they play not just their show at the 7th St. Entry but a live session at the esteemed Radio K at 5 PM Eastern, 4 PM Central.
Radio K can be found on the dial at a veritable plethora of locations: 104.5 FM (Minneapolis-St. Paul), 100.7 FM (St. Paul), 106.5 FM (Minneapolis) & 770 AM (Metro area). If none of those locations coincides with your own, or if all that was just too confusing, you can always listen online.
Times New Viking’s stunning new album, Born Again Revisited, can be had for your very own right here.
Today we’re pleased to bring you the (thus far) definitive Times New Viking visual document, “Do Not Do It Yourself”, a short documentary by Winston Case which premieres today on Pitchfork TV and covers most of the bases:
TNV started their US tour yesterday, and I would not miss them – reports from their recently completed UK and European dates include mention of flamethrowers and scattered brain matter.
The unbelievable Born Again Revisited can be purchased here. Those US dates:

Today we celebrate the release of Born Again Revisited, the fine fourth album by the great Times New Viking. Buy it here, and then buy it for a friend.
Pitchfork is lending a hand, today premiering the brand new video for BAR standout “No Time, No Hope”, directed by Pelham Johnston and Brandon Reichard.
Today is a very exciting day for Matador Records and True Panther Sounds, as our little family officially unveils two of the most exciting albums we (or anyone else) are releasing this year. Both album-previews are fully embeddable, so please share with the people you love.
First, Times New Viking’s outstanding “Born Again Revisited” is streaming in its entirety. Listen first, then buy it (priced-to-own, with two free 7″s and a poster to boot):
And then we have Girls’ “Album”, a powerhouse statement-of-intent. Dean Bein of True Panther Sounds said it better than I could. Whether you live in San Francisco or Mars, you can hear (and buy it):
The above video was shot in Minneapolis’ Loring Park this past August. I could go on about the beautiful setting, the competent camera work or the solid performance…but the simple truth is, this is really just about getting more clips of Adam with short hair into wider circulation.ng
A special album release listening party [presented by INSOUND and IMPOSE Magazine] for the upcoming GIRLS record, Album, and Times New Viking’s Born Again Revisited will be on Wednesday, September 16 at Bruar Falls (245 Grand Street) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn starting at 9pm. Both records come out on LP/CD/Digital on September 22nd. All attendees will receive a promo coupon from Insound for a special %discount on the pre-order! And of course: we will have ticket goodies and music giveaways..
In the immortal words of Bob Barker, I wish I had a refrigerator for every one of you. In lieu of such gifts, however, there’s a drawing at next week’s TNV listening party for the brand new, out-today “Move To California” 4-song 7″. ‘Born Again Revisited’ is available 9/22 on LP/CD and digital formats, but you can preorder here.
Life in Times New Viking-land, a state-of-mind located the slightest bit north (if at all) of Columbus Ohio, is quite busy these days. And by the look of their newly confirmed tour dates it’s not slowing down anytime soon. More shows will be added so fear not if you don’t see your city listed, it may be added shortly. If your city is listed well then you have no excuse, see you at the show! TNV will be hitting the road with The Axemen, one of their favorite bands from New Zealand, from the San Francisco show (10/29) through the rest of their tour.
Also because everyone around here couldn’t be more excited about TNV’s new album, Born Again Revisited (out 9/22/09), we’ve lined up an extremely generous pre-order package. We’re talking 7″s, a poster, and a great price. But like Cash For Clunkers, this deal won’t last forever. Check out the Matador Store to place your order today!

Folks, we could not be more excited about the September 22nd release of Born Again Revisited by Times New Viking. The melodies on this record are as catchy as any the band have written (and we defy you name a group writing catchier jams than TNV), but there’s also a depth to the album that truly rewards repeated listens.
Not just any live performance, this is (correct me if I’m wrong B/J/A/Dave Martin) the first ever acoustic performance by Times New Viking. Shot in Chicago in a rogue run at the Pitchfork Music Festival by Babelgum and Dig For Fire, the performance also appears in an episode of Babelgum’s Ice Cream Man series.
As Dave would say (has said), Times New Viking are unSTOPPable!!! And people, you can pre-order the record for $12 on CD and $13 on vinyl! And BOTH versions come with TWO 7″s and a special poster. Best deal ever, no jk.
Catalog number OLE-896 is Times New Viking MOVE TO CALIFORNIA 7″, slated to come out on September 8. The four song 7″ contains two tracks from the upcoming BORN AGAIN REVISITED LP, those being “Move To California” and “City On Drugs,” plus two songs from the coveted STAY AWAKE REVISITED cassette, namely “Pentagram” and “Teen Spirit In Hell.”
Preorder the new album, in stores September 22, and get this 7″, plus a copy of last year’s STAY AWAKE 7″, and a free poster, all for only $13 – while supplies last.
Download the MP3 of “Move To California” here, and enjoy your weekend:
It’s all love at Matador, all the time, and today is no exception. Two of our finest purveyors of rock and roll have teamed up (Times New Viking – along with directors Pelham Johnston and Brandon Reichard – took the driver’s seat on this one, with Yo La Tengo supplying the tunage and the inspiration) for a video that immediately takes its rightful place in the pantheon of Matador and Yo La Tengo classics.
Our friends at AOL Spinner bring us the “Nothing to Hide” collabo, a celebration of the upcoming full-length releases from both bands: “Nothing to Hide” can be found on Yo La Tengo’s Popular Songs, out September 8th (pre-order action), and Times New Viking unveil Born Again Revisited September 22nd (you will need to OWN THIS ALBUM, it’s a stone-cold sucker-punch, best-of-their-career stylez). Pre-order Born Again Revisited from the Matastore and receive TWO free TNV 7″s and a free poster. Yeah, I hyper-linked it twice. Born Again Revisited is that essential.
The Born Again Revisited preorder is up in its final incarnation in the Matastore, and it’s unfuckingbelievable. In a fit of unprecedented (and probably never-to-be-repeated) generosity, when you preorder Born Again Revisited through Matador Direct, you get:
-the new TNV single, Move to California, 7″
-the Stay Awake EP, 7″
-the Whitney poster from the band’s 2008 performance
Click here to get in on this incredible offer, while supplies last! Remember, your goods arrive on release day – Sept. 22nd – only when you preorder from the Matastore.
It’s the most impressive Ohio double bill since Bronson Arroyo stole the microphone during a Wussy gig and performed a solo a capella version of Human Zoo’s “Change Me”* ; Times New Viking will be supporting The Breeders on the following midwestern USA dates :
Wed-Aug-05 Newport, KY Southgate House
Thu-Aug-06 Indianapolis, IN The Vogue
Fri-Aug-07 St. Louis, MO Blueberry Hill
Sat-Aug-08 Lawrence, KS Bottleneck
Sun-Aug-09 Omaha, NE Slowdown
(*- though I have no proof this ever happened, you have no proof it didn’t)
A pox on those who claim the venerable VHS format is dead ; in fact, Times New Viking delivered the master recordings to their forthcoming LP/CD/digital album ‘Born Again Revisited’ (OLE 860) on a Video Home System cassette. Addressing the mountain of constructive criticism they’ve received from self-styled musicologists wanna-be producers and persons with my initials, the Columbus based trio promise their 2nd Matador album (and 4th overall) features “25% higher fidelity”, a percentage our own engineering staff has confirmed after hourse of exhaustive laboratory tests.
Much has been made in the press of late of Cheap Trick’s attempts to steal Adam, Beth and Jared’s thunder by releasing their upteenth comeback album on 8-track, but with all due respect to the state fair fixtures Rockford’s finest, it’s been a generation since they’ve come up with anything as provocative as ‘Born Again Revisited”s “Move To California” or “No Time No Hope” (mp3). While Times New Viking continue to make-it-look-easy, I can assure you it’s anything but that. A cursory glance at the American rock underground reveals a landscape littered with well-intentioned but vastly inferior bands who’ve caught the lo-fi bug ; Times New Viking are well advised to disavow responsibility for the epidemic, but whoever the guilty party is, the ferocity of TNV’s shows and their sheer quality of their songwriting should be enough to win them a presidential pardon, not unlike the one ‘Born Again’ author Chuck Colson never quite received.
Times New Viking return to the East Coast this Saturday night at Brooklyn’s Bell House, playing alongside the reunited Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments and the Mad Scene. If this clip from 2008 is any indication, Ron House hasn’t lost a step, but wouldn’t you rather have an informed opinion?

Secret show that’s not secret any more ! Fun warehouse party tonight in East London, with TNV debuting some new material. Expect numerous shout outs, whiskey shots and some 1980′s Rock n Roll.
As if a Live Pavement LP, a Sonic Youth/Jay Reatard 7″ AND a Sonic Youth/Beck 7″ weren’t enough, we’re spreading the love with some live instore performances. If you live in or around Memphis or Columbus, be sure to check out Jay Reatard or Times New Viking kicking it RSD style.
