Despite currently soldiering across the country Girls are announcing yet another batch of tour dates. This time, they’re going back to some of our favorite cities, all over the US and Canada, with a stop through Coachella. All American dates are with the excellent Dum Dum Girls. Make all the girl-bandname jokes you want we are just here with the FACTS.
We’re excited to unveil the new music video from Cold Cave for the track “Life Magazine”. Directed by Ben Chappell and Aaron Brown (Focus Creeps), the video stars Marti Domination whom you might recognize from the cover of Cold Cave’s ‘Love Comes Close’ LP and earlier, as Goodyear in Matthew Barney’s ‘Cremaster I‘. Learn more about the video over at The Quietus and stay tuned to the Matablog for more news relating to the “Life Magazine” single, coming very soon.
Alongside this video debut, we’re excited to announce newtour dates that find Cold Cave across Europe this spring (including stops at the All Tomorrow’s Parties and Primavera Festival amongst many others). The band has also added two shows in Los Angeles, CA and a free all-ages in-store in Atlanta along their current routing. All new tour dates below in bold:

* Some more information on “Black Eyes.” Every track on The Golden Archipelago is associated with an island somewhere around the world, in this case the buried South Pacific city of Nan Madol, off the eastern shore of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. The name means “spaces between” – it was actually a series of artificial islands linked by a network of canals, and inhabited until about 1500 A.D. The city was gradually abandoned and exists today in a state of decay and can only be visited by governmental permission.
The band have completed work on the limited-edition dossier that explains and enlarges upon the themes of the album. Contents range from the national anthem of the displaced Bikini Atoll islanders to photos of isolated islands where animals remain unafraid of human beings. The dossier is 73 full-color 8 1/2 X 10″ sheets in a stamped envelope. You still have to the end of January to donate to secure your own copy (via kickstarter.com).
Though you’d be inclined to say we’re biased, we certainly cannot argue with J. Mascis’ listing Kurt Vile’s Childish Prodigy in his top picks for 2009. Following the kind plug, Dinosaur Jr. will be taking Kurt Vile & The Violators on tour this month:
Fri-Jan-15 Milford, CT Daniel Street
Sat-Jan-16 New York, NY Bowery Ballroom
Sun-Jan-17 Brooklyn, NY Music Hall of Williamsburg
Tue-Jan-19 Ithaca, NY Castaways
And don’t forget that Kurt is poised to hit the road with Fucked Up in February:
Fri-Feb-12 Oberlin, OH The ‘Sco (Dionysus Disco) / Oberlin College
Sat-Feb-13 Chicago, IL Empty Bottle
Sun-Feb-14 Bloomington, IN The Video Saloon
Mon-Feb-15 Cincinnati, OH Southgate House
Tue-Feb-16 Baltimore, MD Otto Bar
Wed-Feb-17 Philadelphia, PA The Barbary
Thu-Feb-18 Hoboken, NJ Maxwell’s
Fri-Feb-19 Brooklyn, NY Europa
Sat-Feb-20 Boston, MA Middle East
Sun-Feb-21 Montreal, QUE La Sala Rossa
Fri-Feb-26 Toronto, ONT Opera House
Finally, Kurt will be appearing in Philadelphia tomorrow, with the awesomely-returned Strapping Fieldhands
As the year comes to an end and the spirit of revisiting things takes us over, we’ve come across the following comment that Jared Phillips (Times New Viking) made to Pitchfork back in January 2008 when discussing life on the road:
I don’t know where the best place we’ve played would be. Probably one of those places that we played with Yo La Tengo that we’ll never get to play again [ laughs ]. Those were all pretty fun but, you know, if it ever happens we’ll be 40 years old by the time we play in a place that big again.
So I guess we’d just like to be the first to say happy 40th to TNV because this coming January good times are rolling through towns from Michigan south to Texas. That’s right like any good combination (chocolate and peanut butter immediately comes to mind), Yo La Tengo and Times New Viking have decided to revisit the road and live performance format together this coming January. If you’re in one of the towns below be sure to catch what should be the chocolate and peanut butter of live shows, for the early part of 2010 at the very least. Tickets are on sale now!!!!

At this weekend’s Cold Cave shows, the first 100 lucky attendees will receive a limited edition cassette tape with a mix curated by Cold Cave’s Wes Eisold and manufactured in conjunction with the folks at FYF Fest. Rumor has it that these cassettes contain a very special demo recording by Cold Cave but we can’t confirm or deny that. You’ll just have to find out for yourself. Each cassette is hand numbered and will only be made available at these shows.

While in Los Angeles during their November tour, Mission of Burma, or at least 3/4s of Burma, were able to air their dirty laundry from the comfort of the Echo’s artist green room. Admittedly Burma’s dirty laundry is lacking of any major dirt as the band opted to praise Matador honchos Gerard Cosloy and Patrick Amory, name check fellow label mates, Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth, and thank Burma fans who have supported them for decades, instead of airing any grievances or talking any smack. But these days there is too much negativity anyway, so we were pleased just to watch them tell their story.
A nice backstage conversation, courtesy of Dirty Laundry TV, which shows just how nice these guys really are. If you’re in Boston or New York in January then stop by the following shows to see just how good these guys really are!
