Glasser just finished up a run of U.S. Dates with Gayngs. They shared the stage on a number of occasions, recorded a video together, and by most accounts blew a lot of minds. It doesn’t stop for Glasser though. Right about now, Cameron and the band should be landing on the shores of the United Kingdom for a run of U.K and European dates before embarking on a full U.S, tour. We have these dates along with some new U.S. ones (in bold) below.
Also, we’re also thrilled to share a new standout track from Ring (now available in everywhere), Mirrorage. You’ll be seeing some reinterpretations, both visual and aural, of this track in the coming weeks but for the time being, here it is in its original glory.

Magic Kids were in the Bay Area for the first time. They played Valentines Day with Girls and Smith Westerns the night before and it was a beautiful show. The next day they cobbled together this orchestra, which features Christopher + Garrett from Girls, Max from Smith Westerns, some friends of someone’s aunt who had a weekend flute club, a real string section and some more random friends to play this early version of Candy for the Yours Truly guys. It was kind of a rainy day but it felt so warm in that room. Hope you enjoy. Video is hosted HERE on your’s truly’s site which also has a nice letter from the band.
The band is leaving for Europe this week and coming back for a tour of the states. Tour dates HERE

Glasser‘s debut album Ring, is set to hit stores on 9/28. Something we haven’t spent much time talking about is how the album is loosely structured like the chiastic (or, Ring) structure used in ancient literature. Ideas are paired in symmetric order, often leading bidirectionally towards a certain concept. Songs are used to represent often contradictory emotional states.. So we wanted your first listen to it to reflect that. No set beginning or end, just dive into the album and go with it.
New Yorkers, Glasser made a special listening installation of the album. Go hang out at AVA Project in the East Village this weekend, bring a beer, and maybe a little pocket change because over the next three days, you can purchase a limited clear vinyl copy of the record at the space 2 weeks before release date (9/28).
Then Glasser is taking off for a string of tour dates with Gayngs, but starting it all off with a really special album release show at Amoeba in Los Angeles!

A few months ago, when talking about the meaning behind the song “Real Love“ and possible ideas for a video Ekhi said something like “Real love is being in a state of conflict against the outside world”. Focus Creeps took this concept and ran with it, making a beautiful, dreamy and ultimately pretty psychedelic and creepy video for “Real Love”. Enjoy!

This week Magic Kids released their record, played a symphony accompanied show for 500 of their hometown friends and fans, and left for a week-long instore tour. But the news doesn’t stop here. Happy to share this new video for “Superball” directed by Jack Ferry. Evokes some simple classic vids, faces, instruments, soft-focus lights…eternally into it.

Tonight’s Magic Kids show at the Levitt Bandshell was really really special. Thank you to the hundreds of people that came out, the Memphis Youth Symphony who helped realize the ambition of the band’s arrangements, Goner Records for selling (and selling out of) the album, and of course Magic Kids. The city of Memphis is truly a strange and wonderful place and I can’t think of a more strange and wonderful tribute than tonight. Really bowled over.
Also really excited about the response people have been having to the record. Reviews are trickling in little by little but so far so good. Prefix assigned it one of the top 3 scores they’ve given any record so far this year. Thank you. A few nice selections below….
PREFIX- “A truly ineffable pop album. The Magic Kids are going at your heart with every melodic tool in their arsenal — shouts and synths, strings and sugary production — all in an effort to make your summer (or fall, or winter, or old age) that much better.”
Washington Post- “more than a simple exercise in retro charm … a fully realized and immaculately executed pop vision.”
One Thirty BPM- “Memphis is a little record that sounds massive ….Memphis is a truly lovely album, one that can transport even the most cynical of grizzled old folks back to the glory days of their youth, and a very promising start to a band’s career.”
Lincoln Journal Star- “”Magic Kids have created some magical, gorgeous classic pop here, one of the most pleasant and engaging surprises I’ve heard in months.”

Magic Kids’ pop-odyssey MEMPHIS hits the streets today. We’re celebrating the occasion on a few fronts. For those of you all over the world, we pressed up a very limited edition surprise version of the album on Cassette. It’s limited to 250 copies to be sold at a few future shows, but for the time being, you can purchase the tape (along with CD/LP) until it runs out on the True Panther and Matador stores. Get an instant mp3 download of the record with order as well.
For those of you in Memphis, the band are celebrating the album’s release with a really special one-time performance alongside the Memphis Youth Symphony. Memphis is flipping out about the event, a benefit for MYS and a special way for the band to capture the more baroque elements of the record in a way that’s difficult to on the road. You can read about it here, here and here. Supposedly the Levitt Shell is where Elvis played some of his first shows. YES!
For those of you in the rest of the country, the band are embarking on basically a 3-month world tour that starts out with a tour of Southern independent record stores, TOMORROW. Can’t stop wont stop.

October 15, 2010 Girls will be playing their biggest show yet in San Francisco- at the legendary Fillmore. Growing up in SF it sometimes seemed the closest a local band could get to the Fillmore’s stage was a matinee show of The Other Ones (they are from Marin anyways!) so we couldn’t be more excited for this. Show them some love San Francisco!

Glasser’s Ring is arriving in our hands September 28th but for now, here is the first taste of Ring entitled “Home”. The song remains in line with the Glasser we’ve heard before, eclectic and beat-driven with instrumental melodies often driven by Cameron’s own voice. But there is a depth to both the arrangement and recording which somehow makes the song simultaneously intimate and explosive.
Next Tuesday August 24th, to celebrate the release of Magic Kids’ debut album Memphis, the band will perform selections from the album live with the Memphis Youth Symphony at the legendary Levitt Shell in, you guessed it, Memphis. We’re told Elvis played his first show at the Levitt Shell (but we can’t remember who told us).
This is Memphis the way it was meant to be heard (and you can hear it how it actually sounds at the band’s MySpace where the album is streaming).
Admission to the concert is $5, all of which goes directly to the Memphis Youth Symphony Program. Doors are at 6:30, and the show starts at 7:30.
Hey New York, you’re formally invited to celebrate the release of Magic Kids‘ debut album ‘Memphis‘ on August 26 at Stanton Public (17 Stanton St). We’ll be celebrating the album’s release (it comes out 8/24) with our friends at The Fader with complimentary food and beverages. We’ll also be giving away cassette tapes of the album to a few lucky winners!

The 9.28.10 release of Glasser‘s debut album Ring is drawing closer! Glasser put together a full band and will be hitting the road a lot this fall. She’s starting it out this Friday at Glasslands, and afterwards touring the midwest and East Coast with Gayngs! Also, look above…that’s the upcoming cover of FADER. AAAH! It’s real, not one of those novelty photobooth fake covers you make with your family to at amusement parks. ITS REALLY HAPPENING!
FRIDAY 8/13 @ Glasslands. Glasser w/How To Dress Well, Golden Filter, and Soars. Glasser is on at around 10pm
Oct 4 Brooklyn, NY @ The Music Hall of Williamsburg
Oct 5 Washington, DC @ Black Cat
Oct 7 Nashville, TN @ Mercy Lounge
FADER is hitting newsstands in a couple of weeks. We’re honored and stoked that they share our love for Glasser, and by putting her on the cover seem to share the sentiment that Ring is going to end up being a special record for a whole lot of people.

To celebrate the 8/24 release of their debut album Memphis, Magic Kids are going on an epic in-store tour to visit all of their favorite Southern independent records stores. Each store will host a free in-store performance and have some goodies to share with people that show up. All this will be benchmarked by a really really really special Memphis release-date performance that we can’t quite tell you about yet….but it is gonna be amazing. Ok, come say hello!!! MEMPHIS EVERYWHERE!!!!!
By truepanthersounds on Wednesday, August 4th, 2010
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. Magic Kids are serious about the craft and composition of rock music. Superball, off of their debut record Memphis out 8/24, demonstrates this incredibly. Using the tools they sharpened in their old D.I.Y. bands, The Barbaras and Girls of the Gravitron, they set out to do something classic: take the simple and skeletal structures of rock and garage songs and build into pop epics. The horns, strings and synths are not trim or embellishments but crucial components of their unique compositions. You may have heard an early demo of this song on the 7″ split with the Smith Westerns but this is the version that defines it. We hope you find it as immediate and enthralling as we do.
Pre-order Memphis and get an instant mp3 download of the WHOLE ALBUMHERE
Magic kids also have more new tour dates that will take them across the country with their neighbor and friend, Bosco Delrey. Memphis isn’t about mourning an era of music that is gone, rather, adding another chapter to the story and Bosco is a perfect companion for this mission. MEMPHIS EVERYWHERE!

Great news today, after over a year of hard work, envisioning, recording, and arranging her debut album, we are honored to announce Glasser‘s Ring will be released September 28, 2010 on True Panther Sounds. Sonically, lyrically and conceptually Ring is a tremendous leap for Glasser and honestly, a brave new world for us as a label. Just EPIC.
Pre-order the album and get an instant mp3 download of album-track “Home” available exclusively here. Hear a little snippet of the track below.
Glasser is the one-woman orchestra of Cameron Mesirow. Her debut album, Ring, is a singular work. It moves like the wake of a small boat in a still lake: each song its own, but leading to, and becoming, the next. In doing so it builds on the tradition of classic albums like Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, Joni Mitchell’s Blue, and R. Kelly’s Trapped In the Closet song-cycle: albums that as a whole create stories that are bigger than the sum of their individual songs.
Glasser entered our world in 2009 with her debut EP, Apply. Her intimate, luxurious music struck us as MASSIVE, despite being made by Cameron, alone and in airplanes and shoe stores, on Garage Band. It also drew the attention of Ariel Rechshaid (Cass Mccombs, Foreign Born, We Are Scientists) and Van Rivers and the Subliminal Kid (Fever Ray, Blonde Redhead) who worked together with Cameron to re-imagine her musical arrangements, incorporating organic instrumentation like strings, woodwinds, bass, and a wide array of percussion into her once-sparse recordings. Her simple, minimal melodies and rapturous vocals are perfectly complimented by the album’s maximalist arrangements. The voice becomes a focal instrument, delivers abstract stories and sounds that drench the music in emotion without resorting to narrative clichés. It is a wonderful and fully realized accomplishment, an introduction and immersion in Glasser’s world that we’re sure people will want to be a part of for a long time to come.

It’s been a hell of a month for Delorean, since their album Subiza came out June 8th. They just capped off an amazing trip around the US/Canada with an incredible performance at the Pitchfork festival. Guess what though? Things are just getting started. We present you Real Love, the new single from Subiza PLUS a whole new round of tour dates in November with label-mates Lemonade!
Real Love, shows off Delorean’s emotional and recorded textures: layers of synths and drums peppered with Ekhi’s emotional and immediate vocals. It’s at once exhilarating and heart-breaking. The single (available in limited hand-number 12″ and DS) assembles some tremendous remixes as well.

Magic Kids are taking a one-day break from their nationwide tour with Ariel Pink to take us all out on a boat ride around the East River.
On Monday July 26th, we invite you to come sail around the East River with us and the band. We’ll be sailing on the SS Half Moon, which can fit a fraction of the number of people that Irving Plaza can (where they’ll play the weekend before). It’ll be intimate, joyous, sun-drenched fun. We’ll be kicking off at 8pm, but boat starts boarding at 7. There’s beer and BBQ, and we honestly can’t think of anything better than hearing Magic Kids’ “Sailin’” played full blast while circling around the Statue of Liberty. USA!

True Panther is incredibly excited to announce that on August 24th Magic Kids‘ debut album Memphis will see the bright, gleaming and summery light of day. Recorded in the Memphis studio of Doug Easley over the course of several months it is an attempt to re-frame the city, not as the home of musical eras long-gone, but a place where crumbling neighborhoods hidden BBQ places, and closed-down roller rinks are all enveloped by a thick summer air, and a sense of MAGIC.
What Magic Kids share with last century’s masters- Jeff Lynne, Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks– is a belief in the promise of the pop song; in the ability to take a tiny and simple melodic gem, a small moment of wide-eyed sincerity, and translate it into something that is bursting with life. The arrangements and colors hinted at with their singles on Goner and Fat Possum, are in full bloom on the album. There are touches of late 80s Britpop, the Delphonics’ heartbreaking harmonies, ELO’s grandeur, and Belle & Sebastian’s intimacy. And MEMPHIS. While home to artists that range across genres- the music of the city is honest, robust and joyful- often made by iconoclastic, rebellious and larger-than life musicians. This is the Memphis where Magic Kids were born, where Bennett, Al, Ben, Michael, and Will grew up playing in garage bands, hanging around Goner Records and listening to records. It’s also the city that houses the orchestra of musicians they called upon to realize the sound and ambitions planned for this new collection of songs.
Memphis reminds us of some of the first exciting moments of becoming a lifelong music listener. The excitement, sounds, lush harmonies, and celebration. Their music isn’t positive because of the difficulties of life, but in spite of them. They are close to our hearts because they believe that no matter what the circumstances are, deliberate hard work and ambition mixed with joyous honesty still make it possible to craft classic, beautiful, and eternal pop music.
This first song “Summer” is a slightly more restrained and nuanced than what you may have heard before. In the words of the band “this song isn’t ‘fun in the summertime’ kind of summer, but more the wistful, fighting-loneliness-with-your-friends kind of summer.” We felt like sharing this one because honestly, it’s torture watching summer days blaze by without people having this mellow anthem at their disposal. So here we go. Enjoy the summer!

The wonderful folks over at Yours Truly did this sweet session with the Delorean guys in their Spanish home. They talk dubstep, their genesis, work and do an intimate and incredible version of “Grow” off of Subiza. PLUS, the guys announced another round of U.S. Tour dates. Tour dates below the video.

The version of “Grow” captured in this video is a studied and intimate version of what the band now plays live. It must be hard to be an ambitious musician in Barcelona. Having to tear yourself away from the lure of the white beaches and narrow cobblestone streets to compose in a windowless practice space almost seems impossible!
But it’s here in this video- the bare moments of composition and rehearsal, dissection of every detail that eventually adds up to an ecstatic experience imbued with emotional and musical heart. Ekhi refers to a “musical competition” that drives them to step beyond themselves, to take the time to draw from their surroundings and community to create something better than what’s come before. It’s amazing that Yours Truly captured the band figuring out how to perform the sounds they composed in isolation live. The video shows us the song in its most essential state- underneath the wash of synths and samplers is care and passion, deliberate and constant change. Summoning transcendence is hard spellcasting work and I’ve seen few people as committed to that craft in my life as Delorean. Good music breathes. YES, thank you!
