Randy’s Dutch Treat

Andy Warhol was just estimating — some folks get more than 15 minutes. That’s definitely true in the case of Randy Costanza: ubiquitous local scenester, drummer for the Let-Downs and Sexual Chocolate, comic book artist and familiar face at the Warhol Museum. Not one to fade away, Costanza has now managed to get his name etched into posterity as the title track of the new European-only 7-inch vinyl single by Dutch electronic-pop band Solex, who record for indie bastion Matador Records. There’s even a press release on the Matador website detailing the history of why the Amsterdam sampling wizards named a song “Randy Costanza.” However, Costanza spins his own yarn, noting that Matador employee and former Pittsburgh resident Dave Martin urged him to provide lodging for Solex after their first area appearance. “Apparently they thought I had the greatest American name ever,” he recalls. “I kept corresponding with them, then later put on another show for them at Chatham and hung out with them in Cleveland. I guess they thought I was cool or something.” Despite the Solex EP’s UK import status, Costanza says it can easily be found at the two record stores where he works: Paul’s CDs and Brave New World. Big surprise there.
