In May, The New Pornographers’ sophomore album ‘Electric Version’ (2003) celebrated its 20th anniversary. A limited blue vinyl reissue hits stores today and we’ve also dedicated this latest episode of our Matador Revisionist History podcast to the record, with the band’s A.C. Newman joining longtime Matador publicist Nils Bernstein for a stroll down memory lane with our host, Matt Sweeney.

The Matador Revisionist History Podcast

They discuss how ‘Electric Version’ defied the un-follow-up-able-ness of ‘Mass Romantic,’ how LA neo-hippies Beachwood Sparks inspired the record’s title, and supply a complete track-by-track walkthrough.

“As much as it’s this hard-driving record with these exciting songs that have a lot of information, there’s still a lot of ups and downs and emotional twists and turns,” recalls Bernstein. “It’s just hook after hook after hook.”

The era-appropriate rarity “Turn” – originally a Japan-only bonus track – is now available on streaming services. Newly pristine remasters of the “All For Swinging You Around” and “The Laws Have Changed” music videos are also now on YouTube.

The New Pornographers have dates planned throughout the fall, touring songs from their just-released ninth album, ‘Continue as a Guest’ (Merge). Find a complete itinerary below.

Coming November 3 : bar italia - 'The Twits'

"My Little Tony"

stream / purchase "my little tony"

bar italia are the London based three-piece of Nina Cristante, Jezmi Tarik Fehmi and Sam Fenton. They will release their second full length of 2023, ‘The Twits’, on November 3rd, less than six months after their acclaimed Matador debut, Tracey Denim.

‘The Twits’ was recorded by the trio over eight weeks from February 2023 in a makeshift home studio in Mallorca, and was mixed by Marta Salogni. It finds bar italia’s economical yet evocative songcraft taking raucous, mystic, unkempt, occasionally sinister, and wholly committed turns. Songs like “my little tony”, with its in-the-red riff and excitable hooks, the cathartic four-on-the-floor of ‘world’s greatest emoter’ and the festival tent psychedelia of “Hi-fiver” need little in the way of exposition – these are
exhilarating rock songs, if wayward and strange. Other moments see the band’s increasingly signature, three-act mini-dramas moving into previously uncharted territory. Cristante, Fehmi and Fenton can each manifest a different melody, mood, and cadence – at times overlapping and linear, at others unexpectedly divergent – often within the space of thirty seconds, a tag team rooted in shared language and kinship. “Jelsy”, for instance, plays out like a conversationnbetween friends over wistful, buzzing country blues, the alternating voices at points comforting, wry and hopelessly yearning. The sinuous, slow-burning waltz of “twist” stands out in its bare lyricism and seems to invite each band member’s individual take on a confessional.

While 'Tracey Denim' was notable for its compact 2-3 minute compositions, horizontal and open-ended tracks like “Shoo” ebb and flow, moving from reptilian dive-bar soloing to a palpitating two-note piano coda. ‘glory-hunter’ takes playful twists and turns before ending up somewhere entirely different from where it started. “Real house wibes (desperate house vibes)” and “que surprise” imply sleepless, noirish misadventure, while at the other end of the light spectrum, “sounds like you had to be there” features some of the band’s most sweetly optimistic musical gestures yet. Closer “bibs” is a rare instance where all three can be heard in unison, as a procession of ghostly chords and lacerating feedback bookends the group’s most adventurous and rich set to date.

'The Twits' Tracklisting
01. my little tony
02. Real house wibes (desperate house vibes)
03. twist
04. worlds greatest emoter

Coming November 3rd: Snail Mail - 'Valentine Demos' + "Easy Thing" Out Today

(photo: Lindsay Thomaston)

Stream "Easy Thing"

Pre-order 'Valentine Demos' Vinyl

Marking the two year anniversary of the release of her critically acclaimed album ‘Valentine,’ Snail Mail (Lindsey Jordan) will put out ‘Valentine Demos’ EP on November 3rd digitally and on vinyl. Pre-order HERE. Consisting of four early stripped-down recordings of songs from the 2021 album including the previously shared “Adore You” (a working title for “Valentine”), it also features previously unreleased song “Easy Thing.”

Jordan says: “Without further ado, here are the demo versions of some of the songs that would become integral to the making of Valentine. A little over three years ago, holed up at my parents’ house in Maryland, with just a minilogue synth, an interface, a mic, and a guitar, I started working on writing my second full length record. I prefer some of the demos to what actually came out on the record because of how intimate and solitary the process was. You can kind of hear me crying in one of them. Maybe two actually haha.”

Save 10% by bundling 'Valentine Demos' with any other Snail Mail album: 'Valentine,' 'Lush,' and the 'Habit' EP at the Matador Webstore.

Pretty Girls Make Graves - 'The New Romance' 20th Anniversary Edition

"This Is Emergency" (directed by Mike Ott and James Harris)

"All Medicated Geniuses"

stream / preorder 'The New Romance'

Today, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Pretty Girls Make Graves’ sophomore album, 'The New Romance'. Originally released in 2003, this was the Seattle punk band’s Matador Records debut.

After more than a decade out of print, the album will return to us in a limited edition white vinyl pressing in stores on November 3. Pre-order that HERE. A deluxe digital version also lands today on digital services and features two b-sides “Magic Lights,” newly available on streaming, and a cover of Bow Wow Wow’s home-taping anthem, “C-30 C-60 C-90 Go!” We’ve also posted remastered music videos for singles “All Medicated Geniuses” and “This is Our Emergency.”

Singer Andrea Zollo and guitarist J. Clark guest on the latest installment of our Matador Revisionist History podcast series alongside producer Phil Ek and our host, Matt Sweeney.

Pretty Girls Make Graves formed in Seattle in 2001. The members – Andrea Zollo, Derek Fudesco, J. Clark, Nick Dewitt, and Nathan Thelen – were already local underground luminaries, owing to their time in punk and hardcore bands like Death Wish Kids, Area 51, and Murder City Devils.

The quintet released an EP, a handful of 7” singles, and a full-length, Good Health (Lookout! Records), before getting a cold email from Matador Records founder Chris Lombardi, who may or may not have read a positive review in Pitchfork. A deal was struck and the band decamped to the bucolic Bear Creek studio to track 'The New Romance' with Ek.

In the podcast, Zollo and Clark go deep on the band’s early years, talking influences (Drive Like Jehu, Ink & Dagger, Fugazi), rock band do’s / don’ts, and what it’s like to practice riffs in a freezing cold paper mache igloo.

King Krule - "You’ll Never Guess What Happened Next"

Stream / Purchase 'Space Heavy'

Following the release of the critically acclaimed album 'Space Heavy,' King Krule returns with "You’ll Never Guess What Happened Next," a brand new live performance film directed and shot by filmmaker Anna Pollack.

Earlier this year, King Krule performed a handful of intimate stripped-back live shows across Europe and America as part of the ‘SHHHH Tour’ with bandmates Ignacio Salvadores (Saxophonist) and George Bass (Drummer). "You’ll Never Guess What Happened Next" brings live recordings of seven songs from the show at The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett together with rare behind-the-scenes footage from the band's time in New York.

The near half-hour film journeys through a set list that includes “Tortoise of Independency", “Seaforth”, “Pink Shell” and “If Only It Was Warmth” off Space Heavy, “(Don't Let the Dragon) Draag On” and “Perfecto Miserable” from Man Alive! (2020) and unreleased new track “Whaleshark.”

King Krule continues an extensive live tour across US, UK, and Europe, as part of the Space Heavy tour, with forthcoming headline shows at Hollywood Palladium in LA, London Eventim Apollo, Paradiso in Amsterdam, Trianon in Paris, and more. Tickets are on sale now. For full details, head to kingkrule.net.

Out Today : Kurt Vile - 'Wakin On A Pretty Daze' (10th Anniversary Edition)

(photo: Shawn Brackbill)

Stream / Purchae limited vinyl for 'Wakin On A Pretty Daze'

We're pleased to (re)-announce that upon 10th anniversary of Kurt Vile's beloved fifth full-length and first 2xLP, ‘Wakin on a Pretty Daze’ (2013), we've released a special blue/yellow vinyl edition.

This limited pressing will also include a reproduction of the “make your own cover” ESPO sticker sheet that accompanied the original 2013 special-edition. A special 'Wakin' shirt designed by ESPO is also available to purchase separately or bundle with an LP on both webstores. A yellow vinyl version of the record is available everywhere.

Where previous albums alternated between gorgeous fingerpicking and heavy guitar workouts, ‘Wakin’ blended the two into dreamy and expansive songs that frequently stretched well out beyond the five-minute mark.

Back then we said: “It’s a record that would have sounded great 30 years ago, sounds great today, and will still sound great 30 years from now.” Ten years down the line, we’re still confident that ‘Wakin’ will deliver the goods – yesterday, today, and in 2043.

The reissue serves as the latest entry in Matador Records’ Revisionist History series, our ongoing campaign to jog the record-buying (and streaming!) public’s memory, though "jolt" could be used in place of :"jog".

Gary Young 1953-2023

It's very hard to imagine what our lives, heck what this record label would've been like had Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg not visited a Stockton, CA recording studio run by one Gary Young. If Matador was the house that Pavement built, you can make an argument that Gary's Louder Than You was the house that built Pavement.  But maybe this isn't a great time for arguments. We were exceedingly lucky to know the amazing human, drummer, producer and solo artist Gary Young. Much love today to his family, friends and bandmates.

Interpol - "Greenwich" (Daniel Avery Interpolation)

"Greenwich"

(Interpol photo by Ebru Yildiz)

(Daniel Avery photo by Steve Gullick)

Out today, Daniel Avery’s take on “Greenwich” completes the ‘Interpolations’ series, a collaborative project reworking songs from Interpol’s latest album, ‘The Other Side OfMake-Believe’.

"It’s not an exaggeration to say Interpol’s music helped shape my life as a youngster so it’s with great pride I present this remix for Greenwich,” says Avery. “I was reluctant to touch the track at first but I feel I’ve landed upon my own version of the band’s seductive shadows that have always meant so much to me."

Interpol launched their run of North American tour dates with The Smashing Pumpkins this week in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The band will play a pair of sold out headline shows at LA's Greek Theatre at the end of October, before rounding out the year with dates in Australia, Jakarta and Thailand and a two night residency at New York’s Beacon Theatre. A full tour schedule is below.

"Greenwich" follows interpolations from Makaya McCraven (“Big Shot City”), Jeff Parker (“Passenger”), Jesu (“Toni”) and Water From Your Eyes (“Something Changed”).

Queens of the Stone Age - "Negative Space" (Video)

Purchase / Stream 'In Times New Roman...'

Queens of the Stone Age are back with the latest audiovisual odyssey from their international chart-topping opus 'In Times New Roman…' a brand new video for “Negative Space."  As with previous videos from this campaign, “Negative Space” was created by, starring, and directed by Liam Lynch, who states:

"Acceptance is lonely, messy, and tough, especially when it’s all that is left. This video takes place between the end and a beginning. It’s the desperate and lost, message-in-a-bottle emotions that are tossed out and let float away. No action required."

Prepare to dodge some cosmic debris and take a trip to “Negative Space” here.

In the wake of 'In Times New Roman…' achieving global domination, Queens of the Stone Age kick off the extensive North American leg of their The End Is Nero tour tonight at Detroit’s Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill with special guests The Armed and Phantogram. With several shows already sold out, Joshua Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen, Dean Fertita, Michael Shuman and Jon Theodore will continue to span the globe through the end of 2023. Water From Your Eyes have taken on recent touring companions Interpol’s track “Something Changed” as part of the latter’s ‘Interpolations’ project, which sees songs from Interpol’s latest album ‘The Other Side Of Make-Believe’ reimagined by different artists.

Taking the original’s punch-drunk piano shuffle and brooding vocals and subjecting them to an expertly wielded sonic and rhythmic sledgehammer, the interpolation adds vocals from Water From Your Eyes vocalist Rachel Brown. “The idea was to invert the tone of the song, like a photo negative,” says Water From Your Eyes’ Nate Amos, “reframing change from something foreboding into something encouraging - as well as creating a conversation between Paul and Rachel in order to place the thoughts externally rather than internally.”

Water From Your Eyes recently performed three songs from their critically acclaimed new album ‘Everyone’s Crushed’ for Bandcamp Live. Joined by additional guitarist Al Nardo, the band shred through album highlights “Barley”, “Out There” and “True Life”. The performance is followed by a conversation with journalist Shaad D’Souza.

Later today, Water From Your Eyes' Nate Amos and Interpol's Paul Banks will go live on their bands’ respective Instagram accounts tomorrow for a conversation at approximately 1pm ET.

Now thru July 15, get 25% off ‘Everyone’s Crushed’ and ‘The Other Side of Make-Believe’  at the Matador Webstore or Bandcamp.

Out Today: Bettie Serveert - 'Palomine' (30th Anniversary Edition) + Matador Revisionist History Podcast Ep. 09

(photo: Steve Gullick)

Purchase / Stream 'Palomine'

Earlier this year, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of Bettie Serveert’s debut album, ‘Palomine,” first released via Matador in January of 1993. Today, we’re making a bit more noise, bringing you a Serveert-packed episode of the Matador Revisionist History Podcast. This ninth installment features the band’s own Carol van Dyk and Peter Visser in conversation with host Matt Sweeney (Chavez). They discuss Marcel Duchamp, Groningen’s much-loved Vera club, and their first-ever trip to NYC. Listen HERE.

Also worth a mention: Our limited-edition translucent orange vinyl reissue of ‘Palomine’ drops today and includes a reproduction of the “Brain Tag” 7” included with the original pressing. Find that HERE. A deluxe digital edition of the album is also available via streaming services and features three era-appropriate bonus songs (two of which are drawn from the ‘Brain-Tag’ 7”) – “Smile”, “Maggot”, and “Get The Bird.” Newly remastered versions of the music videos for “Kid’s Allright,” “Palomine,” and “Tom Boy” are available to watch on YouTube.
