Spaghetti with white clam sauce

I mixed a bunch of recipes for this. Clams were Manila, which approximate most closely to Adriatic ones. I used a pound of clams in their shells for two people. Tap clams against side of the sink and discard any open ones that don't close.
Put water on to boil and cook pasta until just al dente or a bit short of that. Meanwhile, time the following so that the clams will be open when you are draining the pasta.
Slice some garlic paper thin and heat in olive oil until light brown. Add crumbled dried red chile flakes and stir to combine. Turn heat to high, add clams, and stir for 30 seconds. Splash in half a cup or more of dry white wine, along with a generous slug of good quality clam juice or canned clams in their juice, season (keeping in mind that juice or canned clams may be well salted), lower heat, cover, and cook until clams open fully, 3-6 minutes.
Drain pasta and add to clams, stir well, add chopped parsley, cover for 30 seconds, toss again with a tablespoon of olive oil, and serve.

Body/Head - 'Coming Apart' double LP / CD - coming September 10

(photograph by Annabel Mehran)
Body/Head are an electric guitar duo comprised of Kim Gordon (CKM, Sonic Youth, Free Kitten, etc.) and Bill Nace (X.O.4, Vampire Belt, Ceylon Mange, etc.) The pair began working together in various loose formats a few years ago, but the Body/Head concept evolved more specifically in early 2012.
Initially their approach was almost entirely instrumental -- lattices of interwoven feedback rainbows, with bits recalling everyone from Heldon to Keiji Haino. They usually performed against a backdrop of slow-motion film projection, creating a dream narrative of undeniable power and visionary reach. Kim's voice began creeping into the mix soon after, and the vocals now have become an intrinsic part of their musical architecture. They have even started writing and playing “songs” now, compositionally distinct from their purely aleatory origins, but still featuring lots of built-in improvisational space.
Body/Head have also worked with guest artists since their inception. An early session with Michael Morley of The Dead C resulted in the Body/Gate/Head LP 'Glare Luring Yo', and live collaborations with Ikue Mori. Ikue has been focusing on electronics as her primary instrument in the decades since the end of her groundbreaking trio DNA, but Kim was able to talk her into trying drums again, and the results have been astounding. Ikue's percussion grounds the spirals of guitar and vocals with its strong central pulse, allowing everybody to achieve greater heights of musical/visual disorientation.

Body/Head have thus far recorded a single for Dennis Tyfuss' Ultra Eczema Editions, a tour EP for Nace's own Open Mouth Productions, and released their collaboration with Morley through Feeding Tube Records. Their next release , 'Coming Apart', will be issued as a double LP /CD/digital album by Matador Records on September 10 (September 16 in the United Kingdom and Europe)

Help The New Pornographers' Kathryn Calder Fund Documentary

Friend of the family, Kathryn Calder of The New Pornographers, needs your help!
A Matter Of Time - An ALS Documentary
THE STORY
Imagine finding out your mother has 2-3 years left to live. Kathryn Calder of The New Pornographers was faced with this gut-wrenching revelation when she learned that her mother had been diagnosed with ALS, taking her down a path few could endure.
ALS (commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease in the US and Motor Neurone disease in the UK) is a fatal disease, which attacks the neurons in the brain and spinal cord, progressively impairing one's ability to walk, talk or feed themselves. The cause of the disease is unknown and there is no cure.
Before the bad news hit, Kathryn was relishing in a beautiful adventure. A few years prior, her mother, who was adopted, had found her birth mother, and thus a whole other family for Kathryn. Relatives emerged, loved ones multiplied overnight. And all the more spectacular, her new found long lost uncle, Carl Newman, happened to be the front-man behind an indie rock super group called The New Pornographers. With this serendipitous revelation, a new realm of musical collaboration and opportunity spawned and prospered. Then the news about her mother's illness crashed right through the newly lit family home.
As a result, Kathryn decided to move back into her childhood home to become her mother's full time caregiver. It was during this turbulent period, that Kathryn became inspired to write and record her first solo album; a parting gift for her biggest fan. She recruited a producer and converted her mother's living room into a recording studio. As her mother's condition steadily worsened, Kathryn's challenge became clear: she needed to complete the album in time for her mother to hear it.
A Matter of Time illustrates the bravery and compassion that can bloom from struggle. How even the most enduring battles can conjure unimaginable feats of strength and triumph against unexplainable forces. This is an inspirational story about courage in the face of disease. It’s about letting difficult experiences meet artistic impulses and making a positive difference through music.
DONATE
If you would like to help Kathryn finish the film and make the documentary a reality, please head over to her Kickstarter page and donate. You'll even get a special gift ranging from a download of the soundtrack (featuring The New Pornographers), a meet and greet with The New P's at a concert, OR even a personalised song written by Kathryn. All this dependent on how generous you can be, so dig deep.

The Majical Cloudz video for "Bugs Don't Buzz" is here
Directed by Gordon Von Steiner & premiered this morning on NPR First Watch, here's the video for "Bugs Don't Buzz" from Majical Cloudz' Impersonator. The video was initially conceived by Devon Welsh, who "wanted the video to be abstract and not narrative-based." Welsh noted that "the rest of the imagery followed from the original concept of trying to remove humanity from the video's frame of reference", resulting in what he hopes "paints a picture that is abstract but clear in its emotional intentions."Watch it now.
Later today, Majical Cloudz will participate in a live chat this evening (8pm EDT) with Soundrop. Be sure to visit the Majical Cloudz chat on Soundrop tonight to talk about this video, and really, anything else on your mind.

August 28 declared Kurt Vile Day in Philadelphia, + "KV Crimes" Video Premiere, + more!

By mayoral decree, August 28 will officially be Kurt Vile Day in Philadelphia! On that date, Kurt will give a free solo performance in City Hall Courtyard at 5:30pm for the season finale of the City Hall Presents summer concert series. Prior to his performance, the City of Philadelphia will present Kurt with the Liberty Bell Award, the highest honor the City can bestow upon one of its citizens. This award is given only to native Philadelphians, and is presented in recognition of outstanding professional achievements and civic generosity. (More information about City Hall Presents, Philadelphia's free weekly summer concert series, is below.)
Ushering in a summer of commemoration, we begin with the premiere of Kurt’s new video for "KV Crimes," directed by Tom Scharpling, in which Kurt is regally paraded through the streets of his fair town (mmm, hoagies).
Kurt will also be performing a song with Big Star on June 30, as part of their free performance of the classic album Third/Sister Lovers at Central Park Summerstage, with an array of all-star guests:
And finally, why not grace you with these beautiful clips of Kurt Vile and the Violators performing at KEXP:

Ted Leo (Solo) at Maxwell's, June 21

(Ted at Maxwell's, June 2008, photo taken from musicsnobbery.com)
As you've probably read elsewhere, Hoboken's venerable Maxwell's, one of our favorite live music venues in this country or any other, is scheduled to close their doors at the end of July. The club's role in the development of many Matador artists & alumni cannot be overstated. Also -- we had a great time there. Almost always.
Ted Leo will be making his final Maxwell's appearance on June 21, with support from Shellshag. Tickets are on sale here.
In addition, Ted, AC Newman, Jennifer O'Connor, Doug Gillard, Home Blitz and a long list of grade-A talent are taking part in a tribute to the recently deceased Scott Miller (Game Theory/Loud Family) at the Cake Shop (NYC) on June 29, with proceeds going to The Scott Miller Memorial Fund. If you cannot attend, donations are accepted here.
