Lucy Dacus - "Brando" on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Pre-order / Pre-save Home Video

Lucy Dacus will release her third album, Home Video, this Friday. Last night, on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she performed the newest single, “Brando.” Dacus’ flair for storytelling is vibrant in “Brando” and the Old Hollywood references she weaves throughout come to life in her endearing Kimmel performance. Filmed at the Theatre Gym at the Virginia Repertory Theatre, two dancers/choreographers, Egbert Vongmalaithong and Christina Leoni-Osion, twirl behind Dacus as she and her band perform; the scene transforms from black & white into a full spectrum of colors. This is Dacus’ second late night appearance for Home Video, following The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. It previews her forthcoming run supporting Bright Eyes, and headline tour which kicks off later this summer.

The Goon Sax - "Psychic"

"Psychic" - directed by Christine Marie Jones.

(photo : Hugo Nobay)

The Goon Sax return with “Psychic,” the second single from their third full-length and Matador Records debut, 'Mirror II'. The song is a slice of strobe-lit noise-pop – kinetic, hook-laden and touched with genuine dreaminess.

'Mirror II' is out July 9, 2021.
"'Psychic' exists in the fragile intersection of fantasy and reality – a supernatural world you escape into until you feel reality’s grip on your collar. As you’re dragged back to linear time and supposed objectivity, the supernatural reinstates its claim to a more powerful truth. Eventually, the friction between these worlds causes you to question your faith in both, wondering to what degree truth can be chosen and what forces from both are too strong for you to stand in their way. Much like "In the Stone," this song is a conversation. Two peoples’ truths of the search for this very thing." - Louis Forster

Lucy Dacus - "Brando"

(transcription by Jacob Blizard)

Later this month on June 25th, Lucy Dacus will release her new album, 'Home Video'. Today, she presents “Brando,” the album’s fourth track in a string of emotive singles - “VBS,” “Hot & Heavy,” and “Thumbs.” Continuing to showcase Dacus’ incredible storytelling and songwriting, “Brando” weaves together Old Hollywood references with frank observations of a temperamental relationship: “You called me cerebral // I didn't know what you meant // But now I do. Would it have killed you // to call me pretty instead? //I'm in a second story window // and you're yelling at me "Stella!" // and I'm laughing cause you think you're Brando but you'll never come close.” Hushed casio drums give way to a swell of instrumentation - synthesizer, synth hi hats, a range of guitars, and percussion. Dacus’ melody is an instant earworm.

“‘Brando’ refers to a very dramatic friend I had in high school whose whole personality was the media he consumed,” says Dacus. “He showed me a lot of amazing movies and music, but I think he was more interested in using me as a scrapbook of his own tastes than actually getting to know me. He claimed to know me better than anyone else but I started to feel like all he wanted from me was to be a scene partner in the movie of his life.”

Additionally, today kicks off a “Brando” video contest. Participants can send in a video of themselves dancing (or skateboarding, ice skating, roller blading, etc.) to the track for a chance to be in the official music video. All skill levels are welcome and more details can be found here.

Fucked Up - 'David Comes To Life' 10th Anniversary Edition

directed by Robert Semmer

In 2011, Toronto’s Fucked Up delivered an album that chafed the edges of punk rock’s conceptual boundaries – a set of songs that splayed freely into unexpected instrumentation, psychedelic drift, and situationist philosophy. Its ambition was limitless and its run time opulent.

Which is to say, they made a concept album.

On December 10th, Matador Records will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Fucked Up’s titanic 78-minute early ’10s masterpiece, 'David Comes to Life;, with a limited-edition 2xLP reissue on lightbulb-yellow vinyl.

The group will also tour North America (East and West Coast dates) and the UK early next year performing the album in full. Find the complete list of dates below.

Today, you can listen to “The Truest Road,” drawn from a rarities LP that will be announced later this year. The compilation 'David’s Town' – a companion to 'David Comes to Life', previously available only on vinyl – has also been made available on streaming for the first time ever.

'David Comes To Life' is a story of lost love, global meltdown, depression, bombs, guilt and madness. Or is it? A modern-day morality tale set amid the dour backdrop of a British industrial town in the late ’70s, it’s a four-part play that follows the dark moods and inner psyche of the titular hero. At the same time, the reliability of the narrator gets called into question. The tables are turned, responsibility shifts, and the story goes meta.

Of course, you could always ignore the backstory and just listen to a fiercely imaginative double album of blistering, melodic rock'n'roll shot through with all manner of psychic weirdness
