Out Now: 'Beyondless' - the fourth LP from Iceage

Photo: Kristian Emdal

Iceage take no issue with switching up their sound from project to project. While many of us would have been more than happy to hear a second act accompaniment to the rasping 'You're Nothing' or a freewheeling 'Plowing..' Part 2, it's with style and conviction that the band ceaselessly provide us with yet a new way of experiencing their world.

'Beyondless' is a record steeped in the miasma of old wrongs and new mistakes, hung on a scaffold of Elias Bender Rønnenfelt's most accomplished lyric writing to date. The title is a nod to the immortal Irish playwright - Samuel Beckett - whose bleak nuance and tendency to laugh directly into the abyss are appropriately mirrored in Rønnenfelt's post-structuralist written reflections.

'Beyondless' is released today, buy it or stream it here

FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO COCKFIGHT : NEW CHAVEZ EP OUT TODAY

IMG_4059

IMG_0207

(photo : Scott Marshall)

We can't rightfully call it "decades in the making". After all, the 'Cockfighters' EP has only been at the pressing plant a few months, and said facilities get far too much criticism from laypersons and record company creeps these days, as is. The important thing is that we're on the precipice of rock history as once again, Clay, Matt, Scott and James have convened (albeit briefly) to remind us their collective skill-set is as unbeatable in 2017 as it was, well, whenever you first heard Chavez. The 12" EP is out today and is available for physical purchase, download or streaming.

If you're in NYC, Matt Sweeney and Dave "Ferd" Ferguson will be performing a brief set in the basement of Max Fish at around 8pm. They'll be giving away copies of 'Cockfighters' as well, though not very many. We're not made of free records (and neither are they), though I'm told we're mostly water. This doesn't sound right at all. What's with all the hair and skin?

denialreleaseday

At the risk of being overly dramatic, our national nightmare of moderate length is finally over and the amended LP and CD versions of Car Seat Headrest's hotly anticipated / universally hailed 'Teens Of Denial' are either hitting your local record shop or your mailbox today (and if it's the latter, I certainly hope you ordered the CD, otherwise there could be some real problems cramming the LP inside). After taking Europe (or what's left of it) by storm, Car Seat Headrest kick off the next leg of North American touring with a free show tomorrow on Pier 16 of NYC's South Street Seaport as part of the Village Voice's 4 Knots Festival. Also appearing are Protomartyr and fledgling young hopefuls Guided By Voices (of whom we've heard promising things, apparently the main fella is considered somewhat prolific, you might even say 'Toledo-esque') and if you get there early enough, I'll be conducting a walking tour of the block former Matador receptionist Joe Gaer used to live on. The show is all-ages, though the walking tour not recommended for preteens or the emotionally immature.

There's No Denying Car Seat Headrest's 'Teens Of Denial' Is Out Today (On Some Formats, But Not All)

Alright, after last week's highly publicized drama concerning THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of LP's and CD's being destroyed, we are very proud to announce that today, Friday, May 20 marks the official (digital) release of Car Seat Headrest's hotly anticipated 'Teens Of Denial'. Stereogum's Tom Breihan calls it, "a sprawling concept album about what it’s like to be young and empty," ("a powerful, cutting, incisive portrait of an entire generation that’s been economically fucked by previous generations’ greed"), while Pitchfork's Jeremy Gordon testifies that TOD represents, "a firm declaration of talent", calling Will Toledo, "an incredibly imaginative, insightful singer-songwriter."  We're no experts on the law (for instance, check that business about our destroying thousands upon thousands of LP's and CD's), but I'm pretty sure Tom and Jeremy wouldn't be allowed to write these things if they weren't 100% accurate.

In all seriousness, 'Teens Of Denial' is available today via digital download or thru your favorite streaming service. The amended and 100% LEGAL double LP and CD can be preordered via the link below. In addition, there's some new tour dates which are highlighted in B-O-L-D.

Car Seat Headrest - "Vincent", New Dates

"Vincent"

"Fighting to hold one's place in the crowd, to hold one's drink. It’s about shouting to be heard, but what's the point, no one's saying anything worth listening to. It’s about wanting to leave but not wanting to go home. The music is too loud.”

Along with some new confirmed live dates (below), Tuesday sees the premiere of a new Car Seat Headrest song, "Vincent", taken from the forthcoming new album, 'Teens Of Denial' (details forthcoming). The above video is an edited version of the song ; the full 7 minute, 46 second version can be heard any of the streaming and/or download services listed below.

The Young - 'Chrome Cactus' Out Today / Waterloo (Austin) In-Store

Of The Young's 'Chrome Cactus', Tiny Grooves' Jonathan Markley writes, "the heavy guitar racket on becomes almost psychedelic, the slower burning shoegaze-bent anthems become seared into yer skull and the volume knob on yer stereo will slowly inch towards 10," and I'm pretty sure that's a recommendation rather than a disclaimer. The shadowy Fuckin' Record Reviews declares 'Chrome Cactus' is "THE HIGHWAY RECORD OF THE SUMMER" ("two guitars peel each other’s skins in empathy, acoustics are layered over top of wuzzy crunch and the groove is cinched"), The Austin Chronicle's Austin Powell says the album, "triumphs with energy and verve", and hey, while we sometimes find ourselves at odds with The Fourth Estate here at Matador Records and Filmworks, WHEN THEY'RE RIGHT, THEY'RE RIGHT.

'Chrome Cactus' is The Young's 3rd album, it's in stores today and whether you've been following this label since our inception or you still have the use of your original teeth, we're confident --- you might even say insistent --- that this quartet's uniquely Texan take on modern guitar heroics is matched only by their songwriting guile. I'm tempted to offer you a money back guarantee, but it seems kind of shallow to ruin our friendship over money (and I'm sure you agree).

If you're lucky enough to reside in Austin, TX, The Young are playing at the venerable Waterloo Records today at 5pm sharp, with the keg provided by Austin Beerworks. There's a limited (100) run of 12" X 12" silkscreen prints (above) that come with the LP version of 'Chrome Cactus' and they're only available at Austin retailers (Waterloo, End Of An Ear, Trailer Space) or from the band on tour later this week (see below)

The New Pornographers : 'Brill Bruisers' Out Today, Twitter Q&A at 12:30 eastern

Elaborate ceremonies to mark today's release of The New Pornographers' 'Brill Bruisers' ---- including but not limited to sky-writing and a high-concept videoclip about a radio station takeover that bears no relation whatsoever to the script for 1994's "Airheads" (which none of us have seen or even heard of)  --- will be briefly interrupted at 12:30 eastern for a Twitter Q&A (#AskTheNewP's).  You've only got half an hour to get your questions in, so this is no time to wonder if your inquiries are inappropriate or completely self-indulgent on your part.

'GLASS BOYS' IS OUT NOW, WATCH MINI-DOC FEATURING MANY FAMILIAR FACES

This week will be the three year anniversary of David Comes to Life, and with that marker, Fucked Up today release the life-affirming and personal glimpse into how far the band has come with 'Glass Boys'. Two versions of the record are available for your pleasure. Check out the 1/2 speed drums on 'Slow Boys' (available as a bonus LP w/ early pressings of 'Glass Boys').

To celebrate this release, we have a few new things from the band for you today. Watch without much comment, a mini-documentary directed by Andy Capper and Scott Pierce, featuring many familiar faces:

Official video for "Sun Glass" (also directed by Andy Capper)

The band have also put together a playlist (the first of many to come) titled 'Other Side of the Looking Glass Boys' on Rdio. You can listen to that HERE. Here is what Jonah Falco had to say about the playlist:

"Mostly for these mixes i've tried to find songs which are equivalent to the musical thematics on the record more than the lyrical ones. The notes, the feels, the registers, and the sensations. But the good thing about the eternity of pop culture is that usually when guided in certain directions culturally, the brain tends to mine the same emotions and conclusions throughout the ages. This doesn't have anything to do with being unimaginative, but more to do with the often vast ideological unity of rock and roll.

Glass Boys, vaguely distilled, is a record about looking back while trying to move forward. All of this music is from the past, but you should listen to it in the present and think of it as contemporary. If you're patient enough to want to pay close attention, I think you'll find a few cheeky similarities between grooves, riffs, and themes. If not, you've still got ten reasons to dance."
