Perfume Genius - "Without You" (Jim-E Stack Remix)

This morning we're releasing the Jim-E Stack remix of Perfume Genius’ “Without You,” taken from the critically acclaimed album 'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately'. Stack had previously collaborated with Perfume Genius and Empress Of on the single “When I’m With Him,” and also worked with artists including Bon Iver, Caroline Polachek, Haim and more. Stack said of the “Without You” remix, “to my ears a Perfume Genius album always embodies excellence, from the song-writing to the production to the mixing. Every word, note, and sound feels so purposeful while playing its role in each song and in the greater context of the album. I chose to remix ‘Without You,’ because something about it felt timeless and familiar but also grounded and confident. That gave me room to make a completely new instrumental around the vocal.” He went on to say, “even though Mike and I are friends and we’ve worked together in the past, I was admittedly intimidated by the task of remixing ‘Without You.’ Once I found a way to bring the song into my world, I started listening to the remix outside the studio and I knew I had done my thing. I just hoped Mike would want to listen to it too."

VIDEO : Perfume Genius - "Some Dream"

"Some Dream" - directed by Charles Grant & Hunter Ray Barker

Today, Perfume Genius releases the video for “Some Dream,” taken from the critically acclaimed 'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately'. Directed by Charles Grant & Hunter Ray Barker and featuring Los Angeles Legend, pigman, Hadreas said of the inspiration, "The song is about the sort of dream world I keep myself in, in order to write. Sometimes I wonder if there will be real world costs for staying there too long. I don't want to pick my head up after a bunch of years go by and see a bunch of songs but nobody to love.” Grant said of the video, “I’ve loved Mike’s music for a long time. Marc LeBlanc is the star of the video - he plays the pigman. He’s an amazing actor and his performance in combination with how powerful and emotional Mike’s music is gave this whole project such amazing energy and spirit. Hunter and I are really grateful to have added to Mike’s creative world in a way that feels uniquely true to him, us and Marc all at once... We are all pigs.”

Perfume Genius - "Without You" Video Competition WInners Announced

Around the release of his critically acclaimed new album 'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately' , Perfume Genius, announced the “Without You” video competition. Mike Hadreas asked his fans to submit music video ideas and 3 winners have now been chosen. Each director received $1,000 to make their vision come to life as well as $1,000 to be donated to the charity of their choice. The winners are Liz Lian, whose video will premiere today, Samantha Mitchell whose clip will debut August 4, and Kristin Massa, whose video will premiere on August 11.
"This song, and Mike's artist's statement about it, reassures me that moments of comfort and clarity are just as certain to appear as confusing, lonely moments are. It reminds me to be patient and to turn toward conflict within myself and view it as a beautiful, imperfect metamorphosis, rather than hide from it. This music video is about the exploration and discovery of self through the natural world. I aim to depict the unfamiliar, abstract, and jumbled parts of ourselves through elements of surrealism and magical realism. Narratives of self-discovery in media often center around coming-of-age stories of young white people as they enter adulthood. But self-discovery and reinvention occur throughout our lifetimes. Seeds of change sown within us can blossom into exciting, life-altering experiences when we least expect it. Annie Tezuka, who stars in this video, did a beautiful job embodying this experience. I wanted to shine a particular light on the experience of women who, as they age, are increasingly seen as they are in relation to others – mothers, wives, grandmothers – and for this video to be a tribute to the complexities and constant change within all of us, especially those women." - Liz Lian

Lian has designated The ACLU of Southern California as her charity of choice. SoCal’s long history of advocacy, litigation, and education defends civil rights and liberties regarding racial and economic justice, freedom of speech, government transparency, LGBTQ rights, privacy, gender equity, reproductive justice, immigrants’ rights, criminal justice and drug policy reform, and police practices.

Samantha Mitchell will donate to the Baltimore chapter of the Sex Workers Outreach Project. Sex work is work. Perfume Genius - "Without You" Video Contest

Perfume Genius is asking fans to submit music video ideas for "Without You", from the new album 'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately'. Mike has written about his inspirations for the song below and encourages interested fans to submit a creative treatment for the music video they would like to direct. Three fans will be selected as directors and each will receive up to $1,000 (depending on budget submitted) for the making of their video and $1,000 to be donated to the charity of their choice. Keep in mind videos should be shot indoors or outdoors respecting social distancing guidelines.
“’Without You’” is about a tiny moment of grace sustaining you through hard times. I looked in the mirror, which is usually such a jumble, and for a brief second i understood and liked what i saw. I didn't know that feeling was available to me. It left quickly, but it was enough just knowing it's in there somewhere hiding and waiting for me to figure all this out.”

Each director will have a video chat with Mike to discuss the song and video before getting started.

Submit your treatment with moodboard and budget (up to $1,000) via WeTransfer in the link below by Wednesday, June 3rd. The directors that Mike selects will be notified Wednesday, June 10th.

Last month Perfume Genius released the single, “On The Floor,” off of his forthcoming album, 'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately'. Today, he drops a remix of the track from Tokyo-based producer, Initial Talk, noted for remix work for Dua Lipa, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga and is known for infusing early MTV-era 80’s sounds into his work. Here, “On The Floor” is reimagined into a dance club track that falls somewhere between Prince and Pet Shop Boys.

"On The Floor" (directed by Mike Hadreas)

(photo : Camille Vivier)

This morning, Perfume Genius releases a new single, “On The Floor" from the forthcoming new album 'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately' (May 15). “On the Floor” is a celebratory pop song that plays with the album’s themes of love, sex, memory and the body, channeling popular music mythologies while irreverently authoring its own. As with the last single “Describe,” Mike Hadreas directed the video for “On The Floor” and notes, “A crush can really live on its own, separate from you and the person you are pining for. The fantasy feels like its own world, obsession can turn the person you are longing for in to a monument that has less and less to do with them and more to do with the idea of love itself and what it can do, what it can soothe or quiet or light on fire. I wanted to show that maddening, solitary part of desire but keep the core which is a real warmth and belief that you have something crucial to share with each other."

Coming May 15 : Perfume Genius - 'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately'

(photo : Camille Vivier )

"Describe" video, directed by Mike Haedras

On May 15 Perfume Genius (Mike Hadreas) will release his 5th studio album, 'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately',  The first single is available today  --- “Describe,” a track that captures a sense living in the moment through a heavy fog of grizzly distortion and tumbling slide guitars. Hadreas notes, “it started as a really somber ballad. It was very minimal and very slow. And then it turned into this beast of a song. I started writing about when you are in such a dark place that you don't even remember what goodness is or what anything feels like. And so, the idea was having someone describe that to you, because you forgot or can’t get to it.” Its accompanying video, self-directed by Hadreas, envisions “an end of the world where there are no boundaries, there are no edges, no rules, or the rules are completely new with how you interact with each other and the space around you."

'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately' sees Hadreas re-teaming with Grammy nominated producer Blake Mills and features contributions from musicians Jim Keltner, Pino Palladino and Matt Chamberlin. It was recorded in Los Angeles, where Perfume Genius settled in 2017 with longtime partner and musical collaborator Alan Wyffels.

The album explores and subverts concepts of masculinity and traditional roles, and introduces decidedly American musical influences. Throughout the album Hadreas plays with themes of love, sex, memory and the body, channeling popular music mythologies while irreverently authoring its own. "I wanted to feel more open, more free and spiritually wild," says Hadreas, "and I'm in a place now where those feelings are very close-- but it can border on being unhinged. I wrote these songs as a way to be more patient, more considered -- to pull at all these chaotic threads hovering around me and weave them in to something warm, thoughtful and comforting"

The sense of communion and physicality was borne in part from Hadreas’ work on 'The Sun Still Burns Here'. Already a formidable stage presence, it had elevated him to a rigorous multi-disciplinary performer. “I had been working with them for a year and a half. With lots of rehearsals, lots of performances, lots of relationships and energies, and I was feeling connected to my body. I was feeling connected to all their bodies. And having boundaries be blurred and having rules be gone and having all this play within nonsense and absurdity -- in tandem with a real connection and truly valuable work.” In 2019, the show travelled to Boston, New York and Minneapolis after its Seattle debut.

'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately' will be available on May 15th at all retailers. Fans can pre-order the limited edition double LP in translucent blue with a 24x36” poster via the Matador webstore or in regular black at this link. The Matador webstore limited edition record can also be bundled with an exclusive t-shirt.

AN IMPRESSION OF PERFUME GENIUS’ SET MY HEART ON FIRE IMMEDIATELY
By Ocean Vuong
Can disruption be beautiful? Can it, through new ways of embodying joy and power, become a way of thinking and living in a world burning at the edges? Hearing Perfume Genius, one realizes that the answer is not only yes—but that it arrived years ago, when Mike Hadreas, at age 26, decided to take his life and art in to his own hands, his own mouth. In doing so, he recast what we understand as music into a weather of feeling and thinking, one where the body (queer, healing, troubled, wounded, possible and gorgeous) sings itself into its future. When listening to Perfume Genius, a powerful joy courses through me because I know the context of its arrival—the costs are right there in the lyrics, in the velvet and smoky bass and synth that verge on synesthesia, the scores at times a violet and tender heat in the ear. That the songs are made resonant through the body’s triumph is a truth this album makes palpable. As a queer artist, this truth nourishes me, inspires me anew. This is music to both fight and make love to. To be shattered and whole with. If sound is, after all, a negotiation/disruption of time, then in the soft storm of Set My Heart On Fire Immediately, the future is here. Because it was always here. Welcome home.

New From Perfume Genius - "Pop Song"

(photo : Andrew J.S.)

Earlier this month, Perfume Genius (Mike Hadreas), choreographer Kate Wallich and Dance Company The YC debuted their project, The Sun Still Burns Here in Seattle. Today, Perfume Genius shares “Pop Song,” another work from the immersive dance piece and a follow up to the previously released “Eye In The Wall.” “It’s the sound of dancefloor euphoria,” said Pitchfork. “The color of lights flashing as you move through a crowd, the touch of skin damp and warm against everyone else’s.” Both songs, included in the full performance, can be seen live when the production arrives at the Joyce Theatre in NYC on November 13th. Additional performances will take place in Minneapolis in December and Boston in January. Full details below.

“Pop Song” is a riveting exploration of one’s physical form as an emotional conduit. “I imagined an ecstatic pile of bodies preparing to be consumed by the gods,” Hadreas says of the track. “A joyous communal sacrifice of the physical to spiritually level up. The lyric is like a conjuration spell to be sung when the mountain of bodies settles in position and is held still as an offering.” The track premiered yesterday on Sirius/ XMU and is available today at all streaming services.

Perfume Genius - "Eye In The Wall"

stream/download "Eye In The Wall"

Perfume Genius has released ‘Eye in the Wall’, a new track taken from
The Sun Still Burns Here, a dance and music performance collaboration with Seattle-based choreographer Kate Wallich. The evening-long piece, set to debut in October, is co-directed by Perfume Genius and Wallich and stars Perfume Genius’s Mike Hadreas alongside dance company The YC.

The nearly 9-minute ‘Eye in the Wall’ is a hypnotic swirl of propulsive percussion, celestial atmospherics and a spellbinding vocal performance that is unlike anything Hadreas has done before. Listen to it HERE.

“I think of ‘Eye in the Wall’ as a cosmic peep show,” says Hadreas. “Watching, being watched, dancers unlatched from the Matrix and truly LIVING. Creating new rituals on the other side. Whole bodies braiding, spit glowing in the dark and a camera floating just above. We spent a lot of time in the studio alternating between the math of the song and the magic of it — which was very much like the process of creating the dance itself. Working with Kate Wallich and YC, really being with my body, really being with other bodies - there is control and a real formula but a portal opened up in parallel that is completely free and overwhelmingly full of feeling.”

Wallich adds: “’Eye in the Wall’ is the part of the piece where we lure you in and spit you out. A tornado of body, time, space, transformation and deterioration. It’s like pulling the Death card when you already knew what needed to end.”

For nearly a year, Perfume Genius’ Mike Hadreas and Alan Wyffels have been rehearsing with Wallich and The YC in Seattle. Not only are Hadreas and Wyffels fully integrated into the complex choreography of the piece, but the performance will also feature Hadreas performing songs he has composed for the project live, creating an exciting marriage between Perfume Genius’ epic take on popular music and the evocative nature of Wallich’s contemporary dance.

A trailer for The Sun Still Burns Here, featuring a clip of ‘Eye in the Wall’, can be viewed above. The trailer was directed by Zia Anger, with art direction by Andrew J.S.

The world premiere of The Sun Still Burns Here will be held on October 4th and 5th at Seattle’s Moore Theatre, with more performances slated for New York, Minneapolis and Boston through the winter. The full list of dates can be found below.
