black midi x Mdou Moctar: Morgan and Souleymane at Electrical Audio

Purchase / Stream 'Afrique Victime'

Stream / Pre-order 'Niger EP Vol. 2'

Earlier this year, Mdou Moctar’s Souleymane Ibrahim and black midi’s Morgan Simpson  connected for the first time in Chicago at Electrical Audio on the heels of a recent North American tour. After some set-up and impromptu free-styling, Simpson and Ibrahim drummed to songs together from their respective latest albums: “Sugar/Tzu” from black midi’s Hellfire and “Chismiten” from Mdou Moctar’s Afrique Victime. The drummers found immediate musical affinity spending the afternoon sharing rhythms and playing off one another’s personal cadence and pulse. Today marks the premiere of a mini-documentary showcasing this special drum session on the Rough Trade YouTube Channel.

As part of the Live at Electric Lady series, participating artists were invited to record their own compositions as well as cover songs by artists connected to the history of the legendary recording studio, resulting in truly unique recordings that showcase each artist’s creativity and musical style. The high-quality live audio recordings are distributed exclusively on Spotify.

“Touring over the last year has been really inspiring after so long away. I am happy to have a document of the new vibrancy and rousing spirit my band brings to the live versions of our most recent albums. "4 Minute Warning" became a favorite of mine during lockdown, something I would sit and sing over and over on the piano in my room. I'm happy to be out of that room now and sharing again." - Mike Hadreas

Snail Mail - Valentine Fest

(Illustration: Corrinne James)

Stream / Purchase Valentine

For the first time in nearly 5 years, Snail Mail (Lindsey Jordan) will return to her hometown of Baltimore, MD to present Snail Mail’s Valentine Fest. The festival will take place at the famed Ottobar over the course of 5 nights from February 10th through February 14th, 2023. Each night will feature a major special surprise guest in addition to a set from Snail Mail. The festival was originally planned for February of 2022 but had to be postponed due to Jordan’s vocal cord surgery. More info about the festival is available in a new interview for Variety.

On the residency, Jordan shares “I am so excited to announce a special series of shows in Baltimore next year. It's been almost five years since I've played my hometown, so we're playing five nights of shows, leading up to Valentine's Day, with a surprise band (or two) every night, curated by me. We tried to do this last year, but had to cancel for surgery! Feels worth the wait :) I'll see you at the Ottobar :)”

There will be a limited edition double 10" heart shaped Snail Mail's Valentine Fest edition of her most recent album Valentine, complete with alternate artwork, for sale at the fest.  A limited number of ticket and signed poster bundles will be available for each night.
