Esben and the Witch - Hexagons Cinema opens next week

We've already teased you with the new material coming your way in November from Esben and the Witch.  We announced the release of the Hexagons EP and that the band would be a special event happening on November 4th, but just to keep you all on your toes here's the jump on what'll be starting next Friday.

Lasting for 6 days, with 6 showings per day, Esben and the Witch present the Hexagons cinema - an online event featuring the band showcasing the upcoming EP in full and for free.   The footage was shot in the Duke of York's cinema in Esben's hometown of Brighton, which also happend to be the oldest continually operating cinema in the UK.

Tickets for this online treat are free, but limited, so to grab your seat in one of the performance you'll need to head over to The Hexagons Cinema and book now.

You can pre-order the Hexagons EP on the Matador Store, the  remaining 2011 tour dates are:

November 16th – Corsica Studios, London, UK
November 18th – Festival Saint-Ghetto, Bern, Switzerland
November 19th – Amalgame, Yverdon, Switzerland

Yo La Tengo's 8 Nights of Hanukkah (2011 Edition)

(I think I heard someone backstage talking about people showing up for a gallery exhibition for all the wrong reasons!)

Tickets for Yo La Tengo's annual Hanukkah residency at Hoboken's Maxwell's go on sale tomorrow at noon eastern time.  You can purchase online via Ticketfly.com or in person at Other Music (NYC) or Tunes (Hoboken).  All proceeds will be donated to a varied list of Yo La Tengo-approved charities. As has been the practice in years past, Ira, Georgia and James will be joined on these bills by an impressive array of all-star musical and comedic talent.  At the risk of siphoning some of Brooklyn Vegan's comment traffic, feel free to make your wild guesses, but please be advised we're not forwarding them to the band.  They've been planning this kind of thing for a while --- they really know what they're doing.

(Dr.) Katrina & The Gloom Wave : Aussie Doc Says Depression = Metal Abuse

(imagine courtesy Kil Slug's Francis Larry Kelly Jr.)

University Of Melbourne researcher Dr Katrina McFerran, no relation presumably, to one-time Matador Recording artist Bobby McFerrin, is "immersed in a new study that aims to find out why some young people use heavy metal music in a negative way." The good Dr. would have you believe "young people at risk of depression are more likely to listen habitually and repetitively to heavy metal music."  This will come as a crushing blow to persons devoted to exploiting the power electronics and goth genres, but let's allow Katrina to give her side of it, via The Melbourne Newsroom ;

By conducting in-depth interviews with 50 young people aged between 13 and 18, along with a national survey of 1000 young people, Dr McFerran is looking to develop an early intervention model that can be integrated into schools to impact positively before behavioral problems occur.

“The mp3 revolution means that young people are accessing music more than ever before and it’s not uncommon for some to listen to music for seven or eight hours a day,” she said.

“Most young people listen to a range of music in positive ways; to block out crowds, to lift their mood or to give them energy when exercising, but young people at risk of depression are more likely to be listening to music, particularly heavy metal music, in a negative way.

“Examples of this are when someone listens to the same song or album of heavy metal music over and over again and doesn’t listen to anything else. They do this to isolate themselves or escape from reality.

“If this behavior continues over a period of time then it might indicate that this young person is suffering from depression or anxiety, and at worst, might suggest suicidal tendencies.”

Yes, well, ok.  But where's the downside?

Fucked Up bringing Halloween horror to the UK

What do you want for Halloween? Not a question often asked, but let Matador take the time to make sure you're all getting what you want for this, the most special of holidays.

Burned retinas?  Pulverised ear drums?  Sweaty hugs?  More fun than you can shake a (broom)stick at?  Well, if thats the case we might be able to help you, as Fucked Up bring their festive fun to the UK this week, culminating in a special show at The Scala in London on October 31st.   And if you can't make the show? Well, the gift of a burnt eyeball is free to all, courtesy of the flyer below.

Along with the ever fantastic Fucked Up live show, we'll also have competitions for the best (and worst) fancy dress, prizes and a photographer to document all the stupidity. Support comes from the excellent (and costumed!) Eagulls and Cold Pumas, both of whom are well worth turning up early for.

Coming this Halloween: TV Casualty's debut 7"

On October 31st*, Matador will release a charity 7" from Philadelphia's TV Casualty.

This is the first recorded document to be released by a collective made up of Brian Sokel (Franklin, AM/FM), Andy Nelson (Ceremony, Paint It Black), Atom Goren (Atom and His Package) & Chris Wilson (Ted Leo & the Pharmacists). Over the past few years the group has played out in and around Philly for different charitable events, assembling as The Ramones (with Rodney Anonymous), Black Flag (with Dan Yemin) and Minor Threat (with Mike McKee). Here, Ted Leo joins the band as Glen Danzig, in what else but their take on The Misfits (watch some past performances here)!

As part of Matador's famed ELO- catalogue series (confused? consult the discography), this blood-red 7" features covers of Children In Heat, Angelfuck, Teenagers From Mars, We Bite, Who Killed Marilyn, Some Kinda Hate. All proceeds collected on sales of this release will be donated on behalf of TV Casualty & Matador to The Attic Youth Center, Philadelphia's only LGBTQ Youth Center.

TV Casualty's next live date is on October 28 at The Florida Theater as part of The Fest in Gainesville, Florida. Money collected at this show will go to Occupy Philadelphia.

Pre-order the single at the Matador store now.

*The band will have copies for sale on their 10/28 show in Gainesville and you should be able to find the 7" in your local stores around then. You can also buy the tracks digitally starting 10/31.

Ira Kaplan's Participation In The Democratic Process Blown Way Out Of Proportion

Only the most cynical of observers would look at the above item, taken from the venerable Hoboken Patch, and conclude this was some sort of sleazy ploy to promote the upcoming Condo Fucks show at the Mercury Lounge (November 4, supporting The Glands). Except it is.  On our part, anyway.  Still, you'd like to think we live in a world where showing interest in community matters was the rule rather than the exception, that Ira could attend such meetings without being harassed by local reporters, photographers or his own record label.

Two Reminders / Corrections Concerning The Young

a) The Young are playing this Saturday night at Austin, TX's Emo's (inside) with Pierced Arrows and Don't.  This post is simply a cheap excuse to show off the snazzy flyer for the event.

b) the Friday,  November 11 date at the Cake Shop is no longer happening.  Instead, the Young's first NYC show in nearly a year will take place the same evening supporting Kurt Vile & The Violators at Webster Hall.

Dry red curry of beef and pumpkin

Another variation on a David Thompson recipe, this seasonal dish uses pumkpin, though any squash could potentially be used. If using pumpkin, select a small, heavy "pie pumpkin" over the large ones used for jack-o'-lanterns. Pierce from top with a heavy knife, then carefully carve into two pieces. Scoop out the inside and separate the seeds from the pulp. Discard pulp. Roast seeds on an oiled tray, salted, in one layer, in preheated 325-degree oven for about 25 minutes. Stir and turn after 10 minutes, and several times thereafter. They make a nice snack.

Carve half of the pumpkin into lozenge-shaped pieces, about an inch by an inch square, and about a half-inch thick. Be sure to remove the peel. Soften in a pot of boiling salted water for about 5 minutes or less.

The paste for this curry is relatively simple and very adaptable to different recipes, so make a bunch and save in the fridge - it will keep for months:

10 dried long red chiles (seeded, soaked in cold salted water and drained)
large pinch of sale
1 1/2 tbs chopped galangal
3 tbs chopped lemongrass
2 tsp finely grated kaffir lime zest
1 tbs chopped & scraped coriander root
1 tbs chopped red shallot
2 tbs chopped garlic
2 tsp shrimp paste (first loosely wrap in foil, then roast in a 450-degree oven for 5 minutes)

Pound each ingredient in a mortar and pestle until it becomes a paste, then add the next one, continuing until you have a fine paste.

You will also need:

1-2 lbs nicely marbled shell steak or ribeye, chopped across the grain and diagonally into 1X1X1/2" pieces
oil for deep frying
large pinch of white sugar
2 tbs fish sauce
1/2 cup stock or water
5 kaffir lime leaves, finely minced
bunch of coriander leaves

Deep-fry the steak in 350-degree oil for about 10-15 seconds - you don't want it cooked. Discard all but 5 tbs of the oil. Fry 3 tbs of the curry paste in the oil over medium heat until fragrant - about 5 minutes. Season with the sugar and half the fish sauce. Add the steak and stir until cooked - probably only 2 minutes at most - add the pumpkin pieces just before the steak is done, and stir thoroughly. Moisten during this process with stock or water if necessary - it's probably not necessary, you should not have a "sauce" with this dish, which is why it's called dry. It should be extremely oily and fragrant. Taste and adjust for seasoning - it should taste salty, hot, rich and slightly sweet in that order - add up to the remaining half of the fish sauce if needed to balance the flavor, being very careful not to overdo it.

Stir in the kaffir lime leaves and the coriander leaves and serve with jasmine rice, nam pla prik and other sides.

Own your own work of art

The next 15 people who make a purchase over $75 at the Matador Store will walk away with a complimentary Steve Keene painting we commissioned for the new Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks album Mirror Traffic.

Remember that all domestic orders over $50 already qualify for free shipping, and only 15 of these paintings are available, so act fast.

Fucked Up and Kurt Vile rocking down under

Always partying the hardest and touring the furthest, Fucked Up and Kurt Vile (along with the Violators) both head for warmer climates with tours south of the equator this winter.  It'll be Kurt's first time ever to Australia and New Zealand, whilst Fucked Up aren't strangers to the land down under - though they may be strangers to some of the 50,000 capacity stadiums they'll be playing whilst supporting the Foo Fighters.

Tenacious D also support on the FF tour, meaning Matador's favourite frenemy of 2011 (friend/enemy) will be sharing the stage too. We can only assume that hilarity will ensue.

Chavez - "You Must Be Stopped", As Not Seen On Network Television

"You Must Be Stopped" (studio version available on the 'Better Days Will Haunt You' 2XCD/DVD set), video courtesy NBC and "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon".  Earlier in the day, Chavez taped a version of "Laugh Track" for broadcast, but not before they were prevented from handing out copies of the newly released "Chavez : The Video Game" to every member of Fallon's studio audience.  We heard something about "not upstaging the country-club pseudo-athlete" who was the program's other guest.  That's a pretty harsh way of referring to Alan Cumming, but whatever, we're not about show biz squabbles.
