Today's random single from the collection is "Moko Dialo" by the Rail Band. This is on the RCAM label (Rail Culture Malienne), catalog number 014573. The 7"es were pressed in France, but the sleeves were printed in Mali. Both sides are explosive mandingo funk, but especially the B-side, "Tamadiara" - a real classic. There is a second single with a similar cover with two great (but not quite as great) songs, RCAM 024573.

The back of the picture sleeve informs you that you can catch the Rail Band performing at the Buffet Hôtel de la Gare in Bamako, the capital of Mali, at 7:30 PM every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Now, sadly, Mali is in civil war.

It's especially nice that I grabbed this 1985 single on the day before Record Store Day, since Richmond's Honor Role was helmed by the great Bob Schick, who runs the Plan 9 Records stores in Virginia. Be sure to visit one of them tomorrow.

This 7" cooks and is a great example of the kind of complexity that hardcore developed into during the mid-'80s. Penn Rollings' guitar playing is sui generis. Quiz question: what superhip current band's vocalist sounds quite a bit like Bob?

Random single #4 is actually good: Australia's Leftovers, performing the classic "Cigarettes and Alcohol," a track which really strips life down to the necessities. Jesper has been known to clamor for this one at Yo La Tengo shows, but I can't remember whether they actually ever played it.

N.B. There is no picture sleeve for this extremely sought-after item.

The above is the first chapter in the "random single from the collection" series, which will be happening as long as I can annoy people with it. This one is, appropriately enough, an incredibly boring French-Japanese childrens-lounge music single from 1997, recommended me by Yasuharu Konishi at a store in Tokyo the year it came out. Maybe one day it will be cool.
