The EP was preceded by the song "Guthrie", which Clash called “extraordinarily beautiful”, while The New York Times described it as " a quietly harrowing postscript to 'Little Oblivions'”.

Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, and Julien Baker announce The Wild Hearts Tour, an epic co-headlining tour that sees these three legendary songwriters, all known for their incredible, cathartic live performances, playing across North America this July and August. The tour consists of mostly outdoor venues, with the exception of the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and Massey Hall in Toronto. Each artist will play with their own respective band. Tickets are on sale this Friday, January 14th at 10am local time, and special guest Spencer. will support on all dates.

“I’m so thrilled to be traveling and playing music alongside Spencer., Julien Baker and Sharon Van Etten. It’s truly a dream, something to hold and share collaboratively as we get out from under the last few years. I know for fans it’s something different and special too, and for me, it’s sort of like a caravan summer camp-a chance to get to know other artists in a deeper way and talk about music and life and how it affects us all as we move forward. Most of all, I am excited to sing live again, in an open and real way, both alone and together with my tourmates." - Angel Olsen

"Sharon and Angel are artists that I have genuinely admired for many years and whose music has honestly informed much of my own writing and music making, and I’m thrilled to be sharing a stage with them every night. I think after interacting with their recorded work separately so much, it will be special to get to learn from them as we share the space of performance." - Julien Baker

Our aim is to strengthen our respective communities and promote camaraderie in the music world in a safe and enjoyable environment. We have carefully chosen the venues we think will deliver the best experience for us and our fans. I look up to Angel and have the deepest admiration for Julien and Spencer.. It is an honor, to say the least, to be able to share the stage with such talent on a tour across North America.” - Sharon Van Etten

Episode 5 of The Matador Revision History Podcast With Julien Baker & The New Pornographers

Today, we close out year one of Matador’s Revisionist History podcast, which pairs artists and collaborators to discuss a Matador album celebrating a noteworthy anniversary. The fifth and final episode of our inaugural season brings Julien Baker together with Carl Newman, Neko Case, and John Collins of The New Pornographers. (stream the podcast here)

The New Pornographers are celebrating the 21 st anniversary of their debut album, 'Mass Romantic', with a tour and a reissue, which is pressed on red vinyl and includes a pretty great bonus 7”, “Letter from an Occupant.” Released earlier this year, Baker’s third LP, 'Little Oblivions', is presently lighting up best-of lists across the web and print. Discussion
is enhanced by our host, Matt Sweeney.

They go deep on 'Mass Romantic' – the songs, the scene, the various multitrack tape machines and their timecode synchronization. Case also explains why Canadians do band dynamics better than Americans. Matt and Carl both praise the band Om only to realize that Carl is talking about a different band, Ohmme.

out today : Julien Baker - 'Little Oblivions Remixes'

Julien Baker, photo by Alysse Gafkjen

Today, Julien Baker releases 'Little Oblivions Remixes', which sees tracks from her critically acclaimed album 'Little Oblivions 'reworked by notable contemporaries personally selected by Baker. The EP features contributions from singer-songwriter Half Waif, celebrated electronic composer Helios, Australian folktonica songwriter Gordi, Oakland artist and producer Thao, and UK experimental and industrial metal artist Jesu (Justin K. Broadrick).

(stream/purchase 'Little Oblivions')

Thao also contributed to the EP by way of her remix of ‘Ziptie’ and  notes, “I was immediately drawn to ‘Ziptie’ for Julien's beautiful melodies and haunting, arresting imagery. I knew I wanted to create a lot of different additional sounds and melodies inspired by the lyrics. I pictured a sort of post-apocalyptic, incredulous, acerbic, off-kilter and morose dance party (one of my top 3 dance party themes). I programmed rough sketches of the drum parts and built out the track with synths, bass, guitar, and drum machines. I asked my friend and incredible drummer Jason Slota to record live parts. I edited and patched segments of his drums, and then glued everything together with more synths and vocals. It was an immense pleasure to immerse myself in such beautiful vocal tracks, and I wanted to bring them to the fore as much as possible. I'm so happy I got to remix this song. Thank you Julien!"

Julien Baker - "Ringside" (Gordi Remix)

Stream/download "Ringside" (Gordi Remix)

(photo  : Scott Kunkel, Eau Claires Festival, 2018)

In advance of tomorrow's release of Julien Baker's 'Little Oblivions Remixes' EP, this morning Baker has released a remix of the album's "Ringside", by Gordi.
“I first met Julien in Barcelona in 2017. I'd been a big fan for ages so it was a real pleasure to play a show with her. We spent a bunch of time together at Eaux Claires festival in 2018 making music - we even played an hour long improvised set together to a crowd of a thousand people from this treehouse that was like a huge musical instrument with lots of tiny loop pedal stations... it was as weird as it sounds. But because of the way we think about chords and melodies and songwriting, we could really connect on the fly and make something beautiful. I loved having the opportunity to dig through the stems on this new Julien track and reimagine it.”

Julien Baker - "Favor "(Jesu Remix)

Earlier this month, Julien Baker announced the September 1st release of the  'Little Oblivions Remixes'EP, which sees tracks from her critically acclaimed album 'Little Oblivions' reworked by notable contemporaries personally selected by Baker.

Today comes a second preview from the EP with a rework of ‘Favor’ from Jesu, the moniker of pioneering UK experimental and industrial metal musician Justin K. Broadrick (Godflesh, Final, JK Flesh, Techno Animal, Napalm Death).
“Having already been a fan of Julien since her first album, it was wonderful to hear that Julien was in turn a fan of Jesu. The request for the remix, and being able to work Julien’s voice and music in the context of Jesu, was something both daunting and very exciting. I reimagined Julien’s song to accommodate Jesu’s heavy and melancholy guitars and much much more. After much self doubt I was heartened to hear that Julien and all concerned loved the remix. This one I am truly proud of….” - Justin Broadrick

Julien Baker - "Bloodshot" (Helios Remix)

Earlier this year Julien Baker released her critically acclaimed album, Little Oblivions via Matador Records. Today, she announces the September 1st release of  the 'Little Oblivions Remixes' EP on which select tracks off the album are remixed and reworked by some of the most notable artists in contemporary music. Hand selected by Baker herself, it features contributions from Half Waif, Helios, Gordi and Jesu.

Today, she shares the first taste of 'Little Oblivions Remixes' by way of Helios’ take on “Bloodshot.” He transforms the heavy, electronics focused track into a dreamlike daze which accentuates Baker’s original melodies while bolstering the bittersweet lyrics and stunning vocal performance.

photo : Alysse Gafkjen

photo : Hollie Kenniff.
“I was excited when Julien Baker reached out about doing a remix, because I respect her work and it was an interesting challenge to do a remix of singer/songwriter material in the context of my approach which is more in the electronic/ambient world. I wanted to keep the integrity of the original composition, which was great, but also wanted to create enough of a spin to give it a distinctly new quality. My approach to remixes is to use as much of the original material as possible, but to use those elements as a base to create a variety of new textures. So I took a lot of the guitar and percussion elements and ran them through some old tape recorders to give it a rough "handmade" quality, reversed them, chopped them up or manipulated them with reverbs and delays to create ambient soundscapes. I treated Julien's vocals to match the rougher, more lo-fi quality I used with the instrumental elements. Harmonically, I changed up the chord changes to give the vocal melody a slightly new framework and arrangement on which to sit and create some new twists and turns and builds in the composition. It was one of the most fun remixes I've done to date, with such strong original material it gave me a lot to play around with." - Helios

Julien Baker - "Heatwave" Premiere & Lyric Video

"Heatwave" - lyric video by Sabrina Nichols), from 'Little Oblivions', out this Friday, February 26

"Maybe it's a trite or well-trod topic, but ‘Heatwave’ is really just about being confronted with how much time I spend worrying about things that are trivial. I was stuck in traffic because a car had randomly combusted, and it made me feel so stupid for being concerned with the things I had been anxious about earlier that day. It was just such a poignant thing, an event that communicated a lot of complex things in a single image. So I wrote a song about it. I know I'm not the first person to witness an atrocity and consider my own mortality or life's fragility because of it, but that truly was my experience. Theoretically the lesson or symbolism to be interpreted there is that life is precious and it's not worth it to give your time and energy to negative thoughts, but jesus, how could you be a person alive on earth right now and not have negative thoughts? It's certainly less romantic to say that the consideration of life's fragility made me feel relieved at my own inconsequence, but it's true; it is comforting to think of the minuscule role everyone plays in the human drama, to realize we have more choice about what we give power over us than we maybe thought." - Julien Baker

Julien Baker - "Favor" (Premiere & Lyric Video)

"Favor" (lyric video by Sabrina Nichols)

"Favor" is the third track from Julien Baker's eagerly anticipated 3rd album, "Little Oblivions", out February 26.

“I used to think about myself, like I was a talented liar,” Baker sings on the track, “turns out that all my friends were trying to do me a favor.” Here those friends are Baker’s boygenius collaborators, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers. Phoebe says, “Julien is one of those people whose opinion you want to hear about everything. A true critical thinker with an ever-changing and ridiculously articulate worldview. Her music changes in the same way, and this record is my favorite thing she’s ever done. I’m sure I’ll think the same about the next one.”

Lucy noted, “We sang on "Favor" in Nashville the same day we recorded vocals for Graceland Too and a song of mine. That day had the same atmosphere as when we recorded the boygenius EP. Making music was just a natural result of being together, easy as can be but also rare in a way that feels irreplicable. I love the song for its stark but sensitive picture of friendship, what it looks like to recover from broken trust. Makes me think about how truth only ever breaks what should be broken, and how love is never one of those things. I’m always honored to be brought into Julien’s life and music.”

Julien Baker - "Hardline" Premiere & Video, KEXP Performance

"Hardline"
directed by Joe Baughman

“A few years ago I started collecting travel ephemera again with a loose idea of making a piece of art with it. I had been touring pretty consistently since 2015 and had been traveling so much that items like plane tickets and hotel keycards didn't have much novelty anymore. So I saved all my travel stuff and made a little collage of a house and a van out of it. I wanted to incorporate it into the record and when we were brainstorming ideas for videos we came across Joe Baughman and really liked his work so we reached out with the idea of making a stop-motion video that had similar aesthetic qualities as the house I built did. I don't know why I have the impulse to write songs or make tiny sculptures out of plane tickets. But here it is anyway: a bunch of things I've collected and carried with me that I've re-organized into a new shape.” - Julien Baker

This morning we're debuting another track from Julien Baker's much anticipated forthcoming album 'Little Oblivions' with the new single, “Hardline”. The video for “Hardline” was directed by Joe Baughman who notes, “even after having spent 600 hours immersed in ‘Hardline’ and having listened to it thousands of times, I am still moved by it. It was a fun and ambitious challenge creating something that could accompany such a compelling song.  The style of the set design, inspired by a sculpture that Julien created, was especially fun to work in. I loved sifting through magazines, maps, and newspapers from the 60s and 70s and finding the right colors, shapes, and quotes to cover almost every surface in the video."

'Little Oblivions' is out February 26.

:

At 10am EST today, listeners can tune in to hear Julien's KEXP session via the station’s YouTube page.  She performs “Hardline” as well as other tracks off 'Little Oblivions'. The session also features an interview with Cheryl Waters.
