Coming January 2015 : Belle and Sebastian - 'Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance'

Belle and Sebastian will release their ninth studio album on January 19, 2015 (Jan 20 in the North America) via Matador Records – their first to be released on Matador worldwide.

'Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance' is the long-awaited follow-up to 2010’s 'Write About Love'. The album was produced and mixed at Maze Studios in Atlanta by Ben H. Additional mixing was done with longtime collaborator Tony Doogan in Glasgow, and the album was mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios.

A short video clip from their time in Atlanta – set to one of the new tracks can be seen above (if you're based in Germany, click here). There are also several images from recording and other recent activities on their Instagram (link below).

Pasta with cherry tomatoes, two ways

Fresh cherry tomatoes are still good so it's a fine time to use them in pasta. Here are two preparations that look similar in photographs but could not taste more different.

The first is spaghetti con i pomodorini from Franci on eGullet. This is a fresh and buoyant preparation. Here's how I did it:

1 lb cherry tomatoes (get good ones if possible)
sea salt
2 tbs olive oil
2 cloves garlic, smashed
1/4 habanero, de-seeded and pitched, finely minced
1/2 lb pasta
fresh sage leaves

Bring large pot of salted water to the boil and add pasta. Set timer to 1-2 minutes short of recommended pasta cooking time.

Slice the tomatoes in half and salt them generously. Heat olive oil, add garlic and habanero, and when you can smell the garlic, add the tomatoes, cut side down, and turn heat up to medium or medium high so that they start to wilt and caramelize on the bottom. Do not move the tomatoes.

When pasta is just short of al dente, lift it out of the pot with tongs (do not drain it) and add it to the tomatoes. Cook quickly until pasta is done, adjusting seasoning to taste. Serve with torn sage leaves and without cheese. Plenty of fresh-ground black pepper should be available on the table.

Ruth Rogers present a characteristically more rib-sticking version of this dish in the River Cafe Cookbook:

2 lbs cherry tomatoes
sea salt
3 cloves garlic, finely sliced
6 tbs European butter
1/4 nutmeg, freshly grated
big handful of fresh basil leaves
1 cup grated pecorino, plus extra for serving

Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil and start cooking the pasta.

Meanwhile, slice the tomatoes in half and gently squeeze out and discard all the juice and seeds. Salt the open halves of the tomatoes. Melt HALF the butter in a skillet and then add the garlic. When the garlic is very lightly browned, add the tomatoes, cut side down, with another 1/2 tsp salt or to taste. Simmer gently for about 15 minutes, pressing the tomatoes down with a wooden spoon so that they disintegrate and become saucy, and stirring frequently. Add the nutmeg and simmer another 4 minutes. Add the basil leaves and stir, and remove from heat.

When pasta is about 1-2 minutes from al dente, remove a ladle of pasta water and reserve. Drain pasta and return to pot. Add the remaining 3 tbs of butter and the grated pecorino and stir well to combine. Add the tomatoes and toss to combine, adding a little of the pasta water.

Serve with extra torn basil leaves on top, along with fresh pecorino romano for grating and black pepper at the table.

EMA: Multi-Media Zine 'Back To The Void', Blogotheque session debuts

On September 11th EMA released bonus track "False Flag" which she describes as her "lost generation take on 9/11" on New Hive. Following up that important track, she has put together a 34 page multi-media zine Back To The Void. This zine "demonstrates how it feels to go from being relatively unknown to having a larger online presence, and how it feels when your online self slips out of your control."
“At the tail end of 2011, in the middle of winter, I had a disturbing psychedelic experience where I became convinced that there was a Neuromancer inside of my brain,” says EMA.

“One of the things that unmoored me most was slowly losing control of my self-image. I started out taking most of my own press photos and creating a great deal of the imagery associated with my record...And then somewhere along the line things began to slip...Magazines wanted exclusive photos...I became self-conscious. I wore more makeup. I put a hand on my hip. I parted my lips ever so slightly...While there is something undeniably pleasing about seeing a beautiful image of yourself, overall I felt ashamed...I’d even seen it happen to many of the female artists who I had idolized as a teen. They started out grubby and raw and became increasingly polished. It can happen to anyone. I just fucking hated when it started happening to me.”

Take in Back Into The Void here.
In other EMA news, Blogothèque posted their latest 'Take Away Show' earlier today, featuring "Cthulu" and "Dead Celebrity" which filmed last month at Jungle Design in New York City. Watch the Derrick Belchm-directed session below.

The New Pornographers 'Brill Bruisers' Display Contest Winners

Guest post by Matador Direct's Emmaline McCourt:

In the weeks leading up to The New Pornographers' Brill Bruisers, 40+ indie retail stores across the US participated in a display contest to promote the album. Using the album artwork as inspiration, designers used everything from posters to glow sticks to balloons to create inventive in-store displays. Prizes were awarded to the top three designs.

First place went to LOU'S RECORDS in Encinitas, CA. Their designer used Christmas lights, cardboard, posters, and some creative magic to construct their New Pornographers light box.

Second place went to LANDLOCKED in Bloomington, IN whose impressive window display almost perfectly mimicked the font from the Brill Bruisers album cover.

And last but not least third place went to MUSIC SAVES in Cleveland, OH who utilized myriad craft supplies including balloons, pipe cleaners, crepe paper in their display.

Congrats to the winners and a big THANK YOU to all stores who participated.

Clarification Corner : The LP version of Perfume Genius' 'Too Bright'

Dear Friends,

It seems there's been some confusion ; we're only selling a black vinyl version of the new Perfume Genius album, 'Too Bright' here in North America. There is a gold vinyl version but it's manufactured in the UK and available there from Turnstile. If anyone has ordered the album from us expecting a gold edition, that's unfortunate, but the black vinyl LP is the only version available from us in North America. Thanks.

VIDEO : Interpol - "Twice As Hard"

We'd like to congratulate Interpol on 'El Pintor' entering next week's U.S. Billboard Top 200 album chart at #7. That said, this project is very much a marathon rather than a sprint (though it's funny how often that cliche is employed by persons who've neither sprinted or run marathons) and along with a new date added to the band's massive touring schedule (see below) in Pomona, CA, today marks the release of the 2nd music video from 'El Pintor', the Paul Banks directed "Twice As Hard", filmed at NYC's Mendez Boxing. The video premiered earlier this morning via The Guardian and Boing Boing, but we're embedding it, too (and you can do so yourself, if you like).

Perfume Genius - 'Too Bright', Streaming Today At NPR First Listen

'Too Bright', the 3rd album from Perfume Genius is out one week from tomorrow (September 23) and is streaming in full today via NPR First Listen. NPR's Jacob Ganz, while suggesting the Adrian Utley / Ali Chant helmed-recording was "designed to overwhelm", calls Mike Hadreas' masterwork, "awe-inspiring".

Over at The New Yorker, Sasha Frere-Jones is equally effusive in his praise, opining that 'Too Bright' is "a profoundly beautiful record that remains intense throughout its brief, thirty-three-minute running time" ("one of the most encouraging albums of the moment, in its delivery of exuberant sounds by a spiky, unbiddable performer. It is outside most conceptions of pop, whether gay or straight; emotional heaviness isn’t an easy sell, no matter who you are. Hadreas is developing not by becoming easier to like but by becoming more fully himself. If it’s hard to take, the warning is right there in the title"). The New Yorker's "Annals Of Sound" features Hadreas performing 'Too Bright''s "I Decline".
