Opinions are like friends — hardly anyone has one worth listening to.

Tommorow On WTF : Stephen Malkmus With Marc Maron

(we're very hopeful the entire band will be in focus when they're on national television)

You might recall a few months ago a wide-ranging conversation Marc Maron had with Josh Homme --- if not, you can find it here. Either way, on tomorrow's edition of Marc's WTF, his featured guest is Stephen Malkmus. Good thing they'll be getting into some intense subject matter as the latter is unlikely to receive any couch time when the Jicks appear on CBS' "The Late Show With David Letterman" on Monday, May 19 (see how I slipped that in there?)

FUCKED UP - "Led By Hand" (2nd Track from The Upcoming 'Glass Boys'), New Tour Dates

Earlier this morning, “Led By Hand”, the 2nd song leaked/dropped etc. from  Fucked Up's upcoming 'Glass Boys' LP/CD/digital album ---the band's 4th full-length and the eagerly anticipated followup to  2011’s 'David Comes To Life' --- was posted to the band's site.  You can obtain an MP3 download of the song by following Fucked Up's frantic-yet-highly-insightful Twitter account (@fuckedup).  Featuring a vocal cameo by J Mascis, "Led By Hand" is another taste of what caused one (highly) seasoned observer to say, "where previous albums fucked with your head, 'Glass Boys' fucks with your heart."

To which I can only add, I think this one fucks with your head, too.

Order 'Glass Boys' in the format of your choice with a limited edition tote bag, available exclusively from The Matador Store.

Meatballs "Il Casale"

These meatballs were prepared via a hard-to-find and fairly unusual recipe from Il Casale in Belmont, Massachusetts. I will post the recipe later - suffice it to say that they are the ur-meatballs.

The Yo La Tengo / "Parks & Recreation" Connection Finally Explained

As you might've read elsewhere, Yo La Tengo --- appearing as the combo Bobby Knight Ranger --- are featured in tonight's season 6 finale of NBC's "Parks & Recreation".  Given that many of you know even less about show business than you do fitness, personal hygiene or the importance of getting up before 2 in the afternoon, I'm gonna graciously catalog the various scenarios on how exactly, this TV booking came to be.

1) In 2000, the sleeve to Yo La Tengo's cover of George McRae's "You Can Have It All" featured an at-the-time struggling NYC model-slash-actress, Amy Poehler, previously best known for her work on an obscure basic-cable comedy program. Shortly after the release of this chart-topping single, she became a regular cast member on "Saturday Night Live" and has appeared in such Palme d'Or winners as "Deuce Bigelow : Male Gigolo" and "Mr. Woodcock".

Cynics might say Yo La Tengo inclusion on tonight's "Parks & Rec" is Ms. Poehler's way of returning the favor.  And that's how cynics are, always looking for some shitty reason to diminish any sort of achievement.

2) "Parks & Recreation" co-creator Michael Schurr is one of the founders/main minds behind Fire Joe Morgan.  Yo La Tengo's name is said to have something or other to do with baseball.  Ask someone who likes sports, we're a record label.

3) Popular recording artists are frequently asked to appear on television programs  (eg. Roger Miller in "Quincy, M.E."'s "On Dying High", Dave Navarro's sporadic appearances in "Sons of Anarchy").

Glad I could clear that up for everyone.

What Record Store Day Means To Me (Pt. II)

It was very tempting to post Pt. 1 for the 7th year in a row, but it’s getting harder and harder to find anyone old enough to get the joke that Chris and I once worked at Empire Records. Anyhow, as you’re probably aware, tomorrow marks Record Store Day 2014, undoubtedly a hectic afternoon for our many friends in music retail — here’s hoping the staff at Best Buy manages to stay hydrated.

As for the workers and patrons at what I’m told are “independent music shops” (sounds pretty quaint, right?) it seems the event is not without controversy. On one hand, there’s the perennial complaints about flippers, price gougers and most worryingly, the difficulty actual-functioning-in-2014 bands and labels are having getting their spring titles manufactured anywhere near mid-April.   And on the other hand, there’s the opportunity for music lovers to snatch up such quality items as the Cake box set, the “Ghostbusters” 10” or a long overdue Roxette reissue.

All of that said, no matter how shitty your musical taste is where you stand on this divisive issue, it is my fervent hope we can all exercise patience and mutual understanding when we’re queued up tomorrow morning. Just understand that if you get in my way when I’m trying to grab the last copy of this record, you’re going down like Dave Brown.

YLT'S IRA KAPLAN & GEORGIA HUBLEY ARE ON KLRU'S "OVERHEARD" WITH EVAN SMITH TONIGHT, PERFORMING "THE LOVE SONG OF R. BUCKMINSTER FULLER" LIVE IN AUSTIN 4/17

Austin's KLRU is hosting Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley TONIGHT on "Overheard" with Evan Smith. Please note that this event is free, but RSVP is required. In the event page here, you can do just that.

Time: 7pm

Map and directions to KLRU here.

The band is in town to perform "The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller" as a collaboration with filmmaker Sam Green. Love song premiered in 2012 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as part of the San Francisco International Film Festival. This revival will be in Austin for only one night and two performances on April 17th.

"Love Song examines Fuller’s remarkable life as a visionary architect, designer, and social critic, most famous for his creation of the geodesic dome. Green draws heavily from the Fuller archive at Stanford, an astonishing collection of notes, letters, blueprints, photographs, films, and ephemera that contains a wonderful record of the utopian thinker and creator’s massive body of work. Yo La Tengo’s eclectic indie rock provides live musical accompaniment to the film and Green’s live narration."

JOSH HOMME GUEST STARS ON PORTLANDIA 4/17, WATCH CLIP NOW

Lots going on in the Queens of the Stone Age world... Last week, the official music video for "Smooth Sailing" hit the internet (warning all of the dangers of karaoke). Last Saturday, the band took to their natural habitat  to play the first weekend of Coachella. You can stream the full set here. Now time for the NEW news: This week Josh Homme guest stars on Portlandia. The episode airs in full on IFC this Thursday, April 17th at 10/9c.

"The Queens of the Stone Age frontman has many talents in life, but on Portlandia, he is a very disappointing gay man. He doesn’t dabble in home decorating, he doesn’t give unsolicited fashion advice, and he and his boyfriend are total slobs. In fact, they like to do Jaegerbombs for breakfast instead of drinking heart-healthy kale smoothies. What gives?

Watch this new clip from Portlandia and see just how disappointing Josh Homme is when it comes to living up to stereotypes."

More on the episode and show here.

VIDEO : Darkside - Coachella, 4/12/14, Full Set

Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington of Darkside, played their Coachella debut Saturday night in the Gobi tent. Watch the full 48-minute set (featuring 5 songs from last year's Psychic) below:

VIDEO : Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks -"Chartjunk" via The Current

There's probably a terrific excuse why we didn't post this clip of The Jicks performing "Chartjunk" from January's 'Wigout At Jagbags' at Minnesota Public Radio's The Current. SXSW hangover, tension over Crimea, Heartbleed virius, momentary depression over Letterman quitting, euphoria over Nardwuar getting Letterman's gig...take your pick. The important thing is, this huge oversight has been corrected.

VIDEO : Queens of the Stone Age - Coachella, 4/12/14, Full Set

At least one cultural observer has deemed Coachella 2014, "A Scenester Nightmare Hellscape", which is one hell of a terrible thing to say about something that isn't even affiliated with SXSW. For those of us who aren't in the midst of the festivities in Indio, CA, however, it's a decidedly non-nightmarish scenario, particularly the part where we can skip the majority of bands prior to booting up QOTSA's home-court-advantage Saturday night set on the big screen or mobile device of our choice.

COACHELLA WEEKEND 1: QOTSA AND DARKSIDE TONIGHT

The first weekend of Coachella 2014 is underway! Catch Queens of the Stone Age TONIGHT, April 12th, at 9:40pm PST on the Coachella Stage and then RUN over to Gobi to catch DARKSIDE at 10:50pm PST. Portions of the festival are streaming live on YouTube, including tonight's QOTSA set.

The full schedule for the festival can be found here and a map here.

Japan awaits Perfume Genius

Having aired new material recently at SXSW ("The minimalist and aggressively electronic-driven track was harder, weirder, and darker than anything we've heard from him yet. Will Perfume Genius make his Yeezus in 2014? Let us pray." said Pitchfork ), Mike takes the show on the road for a newly announced Japanese date in addition to the End Of The Road and OFF festivals this August.

The upcoming Perfume Genius shows look like this, with more in the works:
June 21-22, 2014 - Hostess Club Weekender - Tokyo, Japan (Tickets)
August 1-3, 2014 - OFF Festival - Katowice, Poland (Tickets)
August 29 - 31, 2014 - End Of The Road Festival - Wiltshire, UK (Tickets)

Hoppin' John

As everyone knows, Hoppin' John is a Gullah dish that utilizes all sorts of delicious things. Namely salt pork, red peas (or black eyed peas or cow peas), and rice.

I started off by making my own salt pork. Previously I'd used the wet brine method, but I highly recommend using Aliya Leekong's dry rub method. Since her site is under renovation, I'll summarize it here:

2 lbs pork belly, skin removed (you can leave it on if you like)
3 cups coarse sea salt
2/3 cup light brown sugar (I used white sugar since my brown sugar is hard as a rock)
3 tsp black peppercorns, whole
2 tsp whole coriander
2 garlic cloves, smashed slightly

Rinse pork belly and pat dry with paper towels. Place in non-reactive dish. Combine dry ingredients thoroughly, and use some to coat the pork on all sides. (Rub the whole spices in hard. You want them embedded.) Reserve remainder of dry rub. Place plastic wrap on top of pork in dish, and then weights on top of the plastic wrap, pushing down on the pork (cans of beans are good for this, or canned tomatoes, or whatever you have). Refrigerate for 5 days, removing every 24 hours, tossing any liquid thrown off by the pork, and rubbing with a new measure of dry rub. At the end, rinse off dry rub and wrap pork in cheesecloth. It will keep in fridge for "one month" (i.e. forever, why do you think they salted pork in the first place).

The Lithuanians slice salt pork extremely thin and eat it on dark dense sour black bread spread with butter. The Ukrainians and Belorussians are said to drive for 6 hours or more to taste this delicacy.

On to the Hoppin' John. I used Anson Mills red peas that had been languishing in my freezer. Soaked overnight, then cooked in their cooking liquid. The Anson Mills recipes are way too fussy for my taste and use far too many ingredients, so I turned to the always trusty John Thorne for a recipe.

1 cup red peas, black-eyed peas or cowpeas, soaked overnight in plenty of water and some salt
1 small chunk salt pork, sliced thin and blanched in boiling water for 10 secs (or skip that if you like salt like I do)
1 onion chopped
1 cup raw rice (Carolina please)
1+ hot chile, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1+ bay leaf
minced fresh parsley
a little thyme
salt & pepper

Boil 5 cups water (ideally the soaking water from the beans, with more added if necessary), add beans ("peas") with bay leaf and simmer for 45 minutes until the beans are soft enough to crush against the roof of your mouth, but not mushy.

Meanwhile, render salt pork in frying pan until crispy. Remove the crispy pork and reserve. Fry onion in the rendered fat (add 1-2 tbs butter if pork hasn't thrown off enough fat) until translucent.

When beans are ready, eyeball the remaining liquid. There should be about 2 1/2 cups in there. If not, add water till you think it's at the right level. Then add salt pork, onions, uncooked rice and all the other seasonings. Bring to a very brief boil then simmer for 20 minutes uncovered. At the end, the liquid should be just about gone and the beans and rice almost or pretty much cooked/perfect. Turn off the heat and let sit for 10 minutes. Serve, with a little extra fresh parsley on top, hot sauce or freshly chopped chiles at the table, cornbread, bitter greens, salad.

Adapted from John Thorne, Serious Pig.

VIDEO : Queens of the Stone Age - "Smooth Sailing" + New Tour Dates

(Editor's note : if prime spots at Coachella, Primavera and headlining the Reading and Leeds Festivals aren't enough, QOTSA have thrown a video-of-the-year contender into the mix with the new "Smooth Sailing" clip (above). Some have called it a cautionary tale about karaoke as a gateway to all kinds of bad stuff, and since I'm in bed by 9pm every night, I'm just gonna treat this like a very, very short, albeit intense documentary. Enjoy the press release below! - GC)

QUEENS OF THE STONE RELEASE DRINKINGEST, DRUGGIEST, DEATHIEST MINI-MOVIE TO DATE
FALL SOUTH AMERICAN TOUR, SUMMER NORTHEAST & CANADA DATES CONFIRMED

Having returned from a triumphant co-headlining Australia/New Zealand jaunt with NIN, Queens Of The Stone Age have wasted no time in teaming with director Hiro Murai (Childish Gambino, St. Vincent) for the just unveiled cinematic mini-epic for “Smooth Sailing,” the latest single from the hailed, hailed and more hailed international #1 album … Like Clockwork.

The definitely NSFW “Smooth Sailing” follows QOTSA’s Joshua Homme and cohorts on a delirious adventure that blossoms from garden variety drunken shenanigans to possibly the most nightmarishly accurate live action interpretation of a QOTSA song to date, lending a new meaning to 3-D musical cinema—that is, it turns the 3 D’s into Drinking, Drugs and Death.

“Smooth Sailing” can be seen  here.
