Perfume Genius' U.S. network television debut happens tonight on CBS' "The Late Show With David Letterman" (11:35 pm eastern, 10:35pm central). Dave's other guest tonight is NBC news anchor Brian Williams, and if you think a guy in that position being funny is a little incongruous, you're never heard David Brinkley's unreleased Laff Records LP.  That aside, we're pretty sure this is going to be one of those TV moments you'll feel like a real dope for missing (and not simply the part where Brian Williams tries to kick Dave in the headt).

John Peel - remembered

Today marks 10 years since the passing of John Peel, a man who opened the BBC radio airwaves for bands and artists outside the remit of the stations "regular" programming and opened the minds of thousands listening at home to sounds they otherwise may have never heard. One of the original BBC Radio 1 DJs, throughout his 5-decade spanning career he never showed no signs of slowing down and his influence on (the good part) of modern music is immeasurable.

As a small tribute to the many Matador bands who recorded a Peel Session over the years, we've compiled a selection of some of the session that made it on to YouTube, (many - including The Fall, Wisdom Of Harry and Pretty Girls Make Graves - haven't) and there's a full archive of all the Peel sessions over at the BBC Website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/johnpeel/sessions/.

Featuring: Cat Power, Interpol, Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Belle and Sebastian, Sonic Youth, Mogwai, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Solex, Unsane, Arab Strab, Unwound, Guided By Voices, Superchunk, Techno Animal and Boards Of Canada.

Enjoy.

Coming December 2 : Yo La Tengo's 'Extra Painful' 2XLP / 2XCD

“Anyone who ever said they liked our older records more than 'Painful', I just told them they’re wrong.”
–Ira Kaplan

("From A Motel Six", directed by Hal Hartley)

1994 marked a number of huge world events ; OJ Simpson emerged from football retirement to claim the headlines in a most unfortunate manner. John Starks missed somewhere in the range of 300 shots en route to the Houston Rockets defeating the New York Knicks in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. CIA officer Aldrich Ames was charged with spying for the Russians, and figure skating's Tonya Harding put her own special spin on the phrase "lead pipe cinch". Still, all of the above incidents are mostly forgotten in history, completely overshadowed by the prior year's release of Yo La Tengo's first album for the Matador label, 'Painful', a record Spin's Rob Sheffield called, "the album that keeps every promise Yo La Tengo ever made, full of ravishing, wraithlink melodies around scruffy guitars that clang around your head like sneakers in the dryer...when a bunch of weird sounds add up to a masterpiece as casually majestic as Painful, well, ‘genius’ isn’t even the word, is it?”

VIDEO : Thurston Moore - "Speak To The Wild"

(if you're based in Germany, you can watch the video here)

Thurston Moore's new album, 'The Best Day' hits shelves throughout Europe today (North America tomorrow), touted yesterday by The Observer's Kitty Empire as "a madeleine of a record" ("both comforting and discomfiting, 'The Best Day' recalls prime Sonic Youth, when their tense experimental attitude dovetailed with often sour but instantly accessible pop melodies") and with that, here's a video for the monumental "Speak To The Wild", directed by Santiago Mostyn.

"I have the image of a character, a woman who could be a mother (slightly older, slightly wilder, like a silent Jenny Wilson) carrying a large and alien precious object into the forest and sequestering it there. It would be a narrative trajectory but with sublime interruptions – the cavity where she stashes the object filling with gold, painted figures following her through the trees, DIY-Kurosawa style." - Santiago Mostyn

The Thurston Moore Band will be in session later this afternoon on WNYC's "Soundcheck" ; listen here at 2pm eastern.

MAJICAL CLOUDZ - "YOUR EYES"

Below is a thank you note and gift (new song "Your Eyes") from Majical Cloudz' Devon Welsh:

Hi all, Over the last five weeks we have had some of the best experiences we have ever had as a band.

A lot of it still feels unreal. We played 20 shows with Lorde. We met an uncountable number of people at the shows and played for even more. We did it all with a crew of 4 people in a minivan. How did this happen?

We were met with positive and warm receptions at all of these shows. We were never booed or heckled (although if we had been I would have understood). I believe this to be a testament to the curiosity and open-mindedness of Lorde’s audiences. Every single night, we were extremely excited to be there and I think people recognized that and returned the energy.

To everyone who came to these shows and saw us perform, to everyone who we spoke to afterwards: thank you! Your participation made those shows happen and although you probably didn’t come with us in mind, your presence was important to us.

As a thank you we are giving away this song, “Your Eyes”. I originally recorded it in 2011, and when Matt and I started playing shows together as Majical Cloudz this was always part of the set. It’s kind of a relic of the earliest period of our life as a band, so if you are finding out about us for the first time in the wake of our tour with Lorde, this will take you back to the beginning of our music-making days together. We made this new version just before we left on tour, so in one sense it is old and in another sense it is new.

It has been great meeting all of you. We will be touring the USA again soon, and in the meantime we are working on a bunch of new music.

-Devon

Coming January 19 : Belle and Sebastian's 'Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance'

As previously announced, Belle and Sebastian will release their ninth studio album on January 20, 2015 (Jan 19 in the UK and Europe), 'Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance.' Today, a peek at the album cover, track listing, and more.

Last week, The Quietus published an interview with Stuart Murdoch and Richard Colburn which gives a hint of what to expect. The album opens with “Nobody’s Empire,” which Stuart said “is absolutely the most personal [song] I’ve ever written.” About the beginnings of his lifelong struggle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which led to his first forays into songwriting, it is easily one of his most musically and emotionally epic songs.

What it doesn’t indicate is how fun the album is. Produced and mixed at Maze Studios in Atlanta by Ben H. Allen III, best known for his work with Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, and Raury, among others, the band – who have been listening to things like vintage Detroit techno and Giogio Moroder – have brought a dance-party element (and a disco song about Sylvia Plath) into their gorgeous tales of sensitive souls navigating a world gone awry. It is perhaps the most inspired and wide-reaching album Belle and Sebastian have ever made.
