Mdou Moctar have released a new single and video, "Imouhar", taken from the group’s forthcoming album, 'Funeral For Justice', out May 3rd. A hypnotic rock song building to a feverish crescendo, ‘Imouhar’ calls on the Tuareg people to which the band belong to preserve their Tamasheq language - it's at risk of dying out, and Moctar is one of the few in his community who knows how to write it. "People here are just using French," says Mdou. "They're starting to forget their own language. We feel like in a hundred years no one will speak good Tamasheq, and that's so scary for us." Watch the video, directed by Laura Greenhall above.

In April, the band will return to the US to perform at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. In June, they will launch US and European headlining tours with festival appearances at Bonnaroo, Green River, Glastonbury, and End of the Road, among others. Find a complete itinerary below

(presave/preorder 'The Collective')

Kim Gordon will release her highly anticipated second solo album, 'The Collective', this Friday, March 8.. Today, she offers one more early taste of the album with “Psychedelic Orgasm.”

A video for the track is also out today, directed by Kim Gordon and musician/filmmaker/producer Vice Cooler. With its quick cuts and upside down tableaus of desiccated pumpkins, giant inflatables and shopping mall escalators, the Los Angeles-set clip is as disorienting as “Psychedelic Orgasm” itself.

Fucked Up - '44th & Vanderbilt' EP

(stream / download '44th & Vanderbilt' EP)
(stream/purchase 'The Chemistry Of Common Life')

Last fall, we celebrated the 15th anniversary of Fucked Up’s ‘The Chemistry of Common Life’ – an era-defining punk LP that also just so happened to be the Canadian band’s Matador Records debut. This Friday, our long-in-the-works orange vinyl 2xLP reissue will finally arrive on shelves.

Today, you can listen to a brand new digital EP, ‘44th & Vanderbilt,’ which compiles three ‘ChemCom’-era session performances with No Age’s excellent remix of “No Epiphany".

We’ve also posted a new episode of the Matador Revisionist History podcast, which finds Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco in conversation with former Matador fixture (and current World of Echo proprietor), Natalie Judge. They discuss making the record, recording nine months of overdubs, quitting their day jobs, and asking Michael Stipe to jump on the mic for a Feelies cover at the close of their 12-hour long record release show (spoiler: he passed).

Today, 'The Chemistry of Common Life' remains as conceptually ambitious as it is musically adventurous, pushing through and far beyond the accepted boundaries of punk and hardcore. At the time, we called it “an expansive epic about the mysteries of birth, death, and the origins of life (and re-living). Merging elements of hardcore songwriting with up to 70 tracks of guitars, organs, winds and vocals the music remains iconoclastic and startling.”

Coming March 22 : Butthole Surfers Vinyl Reissues

"Butthole Surfer"

Photos by Gail Butensky, Video by Michael Speed

We are pleased to announce that Matador Records will reissue a number of key catalog titles by legendary Texas band, The Butthole Surfers, including classic albums and EPs recorded during the band’s strange, grotesque, and ultimately unparalleled first decade. All of the records have been remastered under supervision from the group.

Today, remastered audio of the first three releases in the series – 'Psychic...Powerless...Another Man's Sac', 'Rembrandt Pussyhorse', and 'PCPPEP' – have been made available on streaming services, with vinyl to follow on March 22. Pre-orders are available HERE. You can also watch a new video for the song "Butthole Surfer" featuring rarely seen photographs of the band shot by Gail Butensky during the 1980s. Further titles will follow in the fall.

The Butthole Surfers were formed in 1981 by vocalist Gibby Haynes and guitarist Paul Leary. Drummer King Coffey joined in 1983. Together, they have remained the band’s three constant members across various recording sessions and touring incarnations.

Byron Coley on The Butthole Surfers:

More than four decades after the fact, I still remember walking out of my live introduction to the Buttholes in a state of happy confoundment. By 1982 there were already plenty of bands who'd ostensibly begun as part of the American hardcore scene but were now headed in other directions. One such unit was Austin's Big Boys, whose mix of gender-bending skatepunk and funk readymades were addictively brilliant. We went to see them at L.A.'s Grandia Room with low expectations for openers, the Butthole Surfers, who we'd figured were just another thrash band from Texas with a “shock” moniker.

The Buttholes had already begun their set by the time we got there, and it was immediately evident their sonic approach was far from what we'd expected. Some of their songs resembled a better, weirder version of the Dead Kennedys, but the comprehendible snippets of lyrics sounded great as hell – “There's a time to fuck and a time to crave/But the Shah sleeps in Lee Harvey's grave!” And the singer and guitarist looked like they were competing in the nuts boy sweepstakes. Even with the Grandia Room's impossible sight-lines, the band made a real impression. I asked Mike Watt what he knew about them and he just said they were, “out there.” Which I took as a good sign.

When their records started arriving, I bought them even though they were on Jello B's label (which I usually boycotted). ‘PCPPEP’ (actually recorded after the protean version of ‘Another Man's Sac’) sounded more whacked-out than the studio record that preceded it, and was also the first to feature the power of the band's classic two drummer line-up (King Coffey and Teresa Taylor). The synchronized percussive brutarianism of this pair (falsely rumored to be siblings) provided the perfect base for the unhinged blurt of the guitars and vocals then being shared by Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary. We didn't manage to see the Buttholes again until they played the East Coast in '84, by which time a few bassists had come and gone, and the band had evolved into full freakout mode.

The early-mid '80s had their share of insane combos – The Birthday Party, Black Flag and Minor Threat had the raw power to melt your mind in seconds. SWANS, Einsturzende Neubauten and Big Black created enough overwhelming sonic pressure their sounds might actually flatten you. And Sonic Youth displayed such a dizzyingly unpredictable mix of art, pop culture and violence you'd sometimes leave their shows drooling. The Buttholes shared elements with all of these groups, but added a wild psychedelic edge and a propensity for bizarre spectacle.

By the time they started touring to preview and then support the revamped version of ‘Psychic...Powerless...Another Man's Sac’, the Buttholes' live show was an berserk, evolving extravaganza of strobes, smoke, clothespins, naked dancing, bullhorns, raving lunacy and music that was as madly mind-blowing as that of any band who ever lived. ‘Another Man's Sac’ was also wildly advanced over the previous records. Parts of the LP swaddled their punk edge inside so much oink and babble you almost couldn't discern it, with other segments stretching out into a mutant form of garage blues, and others just swirling out of control.

This evolution continued on ‘Rembrandt Pussyhorse’, which featured a set of tunes for which the Buttholes' rock-based form destruction was mixed with experimental, tape-mangling passages of many flavors. Haynes was handling all audible vocals by this point, and his mastery of post-tongue dynamism was finally in full flight. Meanwhile, their live shows became legendary examples of excess and derangement, and their music just kept getting louder and stranger and more savage. It was the diametric opposite of the hardcore scene from which it had emerged, which was heading in ever more codified and stylistically conservative directions.

This first batch of reissues is certain to raise the roof for a lot of people who thought they had a pretty good handle on the outer realms of the '80s indie-rock scene. And while the recordings are not the fully immersive experience of the Buttholes in concert, you may still feel as though you've fallen down a rabbit hole the size of Texas itself.
This is the sound of the Butthole Surfers before they were name-checked by Kurt Cobain, and signed by Capitol in a frenzy to not-be-left-out of the indie-rock sweepstakes. Before they had an actual Billboard hit with “Pepper,” from their 1996 LP, ‘Electric Larryland’. Before people saw them as something like a progenitor for theatrically oddball outfits like the Flaming Lips and Animal Collective. The Buttholes' early recordings for independent labels, and the shows they played throughout the 1980s, stand as pure exemplars of the most cussedly Dionysian vom ever spewed.

Coming March 8 : Kim Gordon - 'The Collective'

"BYE BYE", directed by Clare Blazary and featuring Coco Gordon Moore

(preorder/presave 'The Collective')
(stream / download "BYE BYE")

Musician and visual artist Kim Gordon returns with her second solo album, 'The Collective'. The lead track, “BYE BYE” is out now, driven by a
snaking bassline which guides us through a haunting packing list.

Gordon will also play six live shows around 'The Collective'’s arrival, beginning March 21 in Burlington, VT.

The video for “BYE BYE” stars Coco Gordon Moore and was directed by photographer and filmmaker Clara Balzary, with cinematography by Christopher Blauvelt.

There was a space in Kim Gordon’s No Home Record. It might not have been a home and it might not have been a record, but I seem to recall there was a space.

Boulevards, bedrooms, instruments were played, recorded, the voice and its
utterances, straining a way through the rhythms and the chords, threaded in some shared place, we met there, the guitar came too, there fell a peal of cymbals, driving on the music. We listened, we turned our back to the walls, slithered through the city at night. Kim Gordon’s words in our ears, her eyes, she saw, she knew, she remembered, she liked. We were moving somewhere. No home record. Moving.

Now I’m listening to 'The Collective'. And I’m thinking, what has been done to this space, how has she treated it, it’s not here the same way, not quite. I mean, not at all. On this evidence, it splintered, glittered, crashed and burned. It’s dark here. Can I love you with my eyes open? “It’s Dark Inside.” Haunted by synthesized voices bodiless. Planes of projections. Mirrors get your gun and the echo of a well-known tune, comes in liminal, yet never not hanging around, part of the atmosphere, fading in and out, like she says - Grinding at the edges. Grinding at us all, grinding us away. Hurting, scraping. Sediments, layers, of recorded emissions, mined, twisted, refracted. That makes the music. This shimmering, airless geology, agitated, quarried, cries made in data, bounced down underground tunnels, reaching our ears. We recalled it – but not as a memory, more like how you recall a product, when it’s flawed.

She sings “Shelf Warmer” so it sounds like shelf life, it sounds radioactive, inside our relationships, juddering, the beats chattering, edgy, the pain of love in the gift shop, assembled in hollow booms, in scratching claps. Non-reciprocal gift giving, there is a return policy. But - novel idea – A hand and a kiss. How about that. Disruption. I would say that Kim Gordon is thinking about how thinking is, now. Conceptual artists do that, did that. “I Don’t Miss My Mind.” The record opens with a list, but the list is under the title “BYE BYE.” The list says milk thistle, dog sitter…. And much more. She’s leaving. Why is the list anxious? How divisive is mascara? It’s on the list. I am packing, listening to the list. Is it mine, or hers.

She began seeking images from behind her closed eyes. Putting them to music. But I need to keep my eyes open as I walk the streets, with noise cancelled by the airbuds rammed in my ears. quiet, aware, quiet, aware, they chant at me. What could be going through Kim’s head as she goes through mine? - Josephine Pryde

Recorded in Gordon’s native Los Angeles, 'The Collective' follows her 2019 full-length debut 'No Home Record' and continues her collaboration with producer Justin Raisen (Lil Yachty, John Cale, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Charli XCX, Yves Tumor), with additional production from Anthony Paul Lopez. The album advances their joint world building, with Raisin’s damaged, blown out dub and trap constructions playing the foil to Gordon’s intuitive word collages and hooky mantras, which conjure communication, commercial sublimation and sensory overload.

Out Today : Water From Your Eyes - 'Crushed By Everyone'

Out today, 'Crushed By Everyone' is a song-by-song rework of Water From Your Eyes’ critically-adored Matador debut, 'Everyone’s Crushed'.

Curated by band members Rachel Brown and Nate Amos, the album dips heavily into WFYE’s personal rolodex with contributions that map the duo’s rapidly expanding community – friends, tourmates, and peers. It’s the rare “remix” record where everybody has met in person (or at least shared some DMs). Kassie Krut twists the title track up amid tumbling kick drums and snare pops. Nourished by Time croons atop a chopped up and scrambled “True Life.” The record also finds Water From Your Eyes reinterpreting themselves, with Nate dialing Nu Metal grind and microtonal drone into an undeniably epic update on “Barley".

Earlier this month, Water From Your Eyes appeared as a musical guest on The Best Show, performing a five-song set.

In February, the band will be back on the road supporting Squid on a full US tour, performing in a newly-minted quartet lineup featuring live drums. Water From Your Eyes will conclude their Europe tour tonight with a performance at Primavera Weekender. The run has received rave reviews, with Pitchfork writing "If there’s still such a thing as distinctively New York cool, we were witnessing it."

Out Today : DARKSIDE - 'Psychic' (Expanded)

Today, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of DARKSIDE’s debut album, 'Psychic', originally released on October 4th, 2013. To mark the occasion, we have assembled an expanded digital edition of the record with three bonus tracks. This includes two era-appropriate b-sides – “Gone Too Soon” and “What They Say” – and a live version of “Paper Trails” recorded during the group’s 2023 European tour.

DARKSIDE is an American rock band formed in Providence, Rhode Island in 2011 by Chilean electronic musician Nicolás Jaar and American multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington. 'Psychic' met with critical acclaim upon release, with The New York Times labeling it “the soundtrack to a lost David Lynch sci-fi movie” and Pitchfork calling the album, “a declaration of psychedelic liberation.” The record was a springboard for the duo’s immersive and improvisatory live shows, which toured throughout the globe until a hiatus beginning in 2014. Six years later, DARKSIDE resumed activity, releasing a second album, 'Spiral'
.
Today, the band has expanded to a trio, featuring Harrington, Jaar, and drummer Tlacael Esparza. In June, DARKSIDE released 'Live From Spiral House', a set of recordings documenting rehearsals for the group’s return to the stage. In the coming months, the complete run of 2023 concerts will be made available to stream and download. More to come.

12. Can’t Cool Me Down (Live at Brooklyn Steel) (VINYL ONLY)
13. Beach Life-In-Death (Live at Brooklyn Steel)
14. Deadlines (Live at Brooklyn Steel)

On March 28th-30th 2022, Car Seat Headrest played three consecutive sold out nights at Brooklyn Steel in New York. An air of celebration, community and showmanship was present, made all the more palpable as the shows were far from a certainty - they took place amidst a year which saw the band having to postpone or cancel a large swath of their North American tour dates due to ongoing health issues.

The three night residency is captured on 'Faces From The Masquerade' - a double album’s worth of live performances that finds Car Seat Headrest at their most playful, exuberant, and precision honed.

The album title is a nod to the band’s original tour announcement, which kindly asked audiences to mask up (for obvious reasons) and also invited fans to “accoutre yourself in whatever further costumery you please” for an evening of “music, dancing, and identity loss.” It also alludes to the by now familiar custom-made gas mask worn by frontman Will Toledo at shows, complete with an expressive LED display for eyes. In addition to the group’s four core members - Toledo, guitarist/backing vocalist Ethan Ives, bassist Seth Dalby and drummer Andrew Katz - they were joined on the tour by keyboard player Ben Roth.

From the slow burning and atmospheric ‘Crows’ (“It always felt like the right track to start off the Masquerade tour,” Toledo notes in the album liner notes on the 8-minute opener, “it was gloomy, it was dancey, and in ten years we’d never played it live”) to the mosh-pitting and anthemic ‘Fill In The Blanks’ (“We went back to a big, fat rendition similar to the original for this tour, not the funky version we’d been rolling on the Twin Fantasy tour”) to the sprawling and epic ‘Beach Life-In-Death’ ("We re-arranged this one to have a bit more restraint up until the breaking point on “-dooooooggssss?” You wanna keep things dynamic with a 13+ minute song”), to the revisionist ‘Deadlines’ (“After experiencing various mutations throughout the recording process of Making a Door Less Open, this song got ANOTHER revamp for the live show to turn it into the climactic dance monster it always wanted to be”), Faces From The Masquerade is simultaneously a joyride through the greatest hits and a conversation with the devoted and ever-growing following that has formed around the band, their songs and live communions.

Elsewhere, Ethan Ives takes the lead on the fevered ‘It’s My Child (I’ll Do What I Like)’, a track originating from his side project Toy Bastard before joining the CSH fold. “As far as simply getting to ball out as a band, ‘It’s My Child’ always felt like the highlight of the whole show to me”, says Toldeo.

'Twin Fantasy' favorite 'Sober To Death' became something of a focal point as well as a mini-TikTok trend throughout the tour, with the song receiving reverential singalongs night after night wherever it was played. “Another track not originally slated to be a part of this tour - it came up often enough in the polls that it soon got locked in. I think this hushed version gave everyone a welcome chance to breathe, especially this night in New York, where people were getting so wild it felt necessary to dial things down for a few minutes.“

In May, The New Pornographers’ sophomore album ‘Electric Version’ (2003) celebrated its 20th anniversary. A limited blue vinyl reissue hits stores today and we’ve also dedicated this latest episode of our Matador Revisionist History podcast to the record, with the band’s A.C. Newman joining longtime Matador publicist Nils Bernstein for a stroll down memory lane with our host, Matt Sweeney.

The Matador Revisionist History Podcast

They discuss how ‘Electric Version’ defied the un-follow-up-able-ness of ‘Mass Romantic,’ how LA neo-hippies Beachwood Sparks inspired the record’s title, and supply a complete track-by-track walkthrough.

“As much as it’s this hard-driving record with these exciting songs that have a lot of information, there’s still a lot of ups and downs and emotional twists and turns,” recalls Bernstein. “It’s just hook after hook after hook.”

The era-appropriate rarity “Turn” – originally a Japan-only bonus track – is now available on streaming services. Newly pristine remasters of the “All For Swinging You Around” and “The Laws Have Changed” music videos are also now on YouTube.

The New Pornographers have dates planned throughout the fall, touring songs from their just-released ninth album, ‘Continue as a Guest’ (Merge). Find a complete itinerary below.

Coming November 3 : bar italia - 'The Twits'

"My Little Tony"

stream / purchase "my little tony"

bar italia are the London based three-piece of Nina Cristante, Jezmi Tarik Fehmi and Sam Fenton. They will release their second full length of 2023, ‘The Twits’, on November 3rd, less than six months after their acclaimed Matador debut, Tracey Denim.

‘The Twits’ was recorded by the trio over eight weeks from February 2023 in a makeshift home studio in Mallorca, and was mixed by Marta Salogni. It finds bar italia’s economical yet evocative songcraft taking raucous, mystic, unkempt, occasionally sinister, and wholly committed turns. Songs like “my little tony”, with its in-the-red riff and excitable hooks, the cathartic four-on-the-floor of ‘world’s greatest emoter’ and the festival tent psychedelia of “Hi-fiver” need little in the way of exposition – these are
exhilarating rock songs, if wayward and strange. Other moments see the band’s increasingly signature, three-act mini-dramas moving into previously uncharted territory. Cristante, Fehmi and Fenton can each manifest a different melody, mood, and cadence – at times overlapping and linear, at others unexpectedly divergent – often within the space of thirty seconds, a tag team rooted in shared language and kinship. “Jelsy”, for instance, plays out like a conversationnbetween friends over wistful, buzzing country blues, the alternating voices at points comforting, wry and hopelessly yearning. The sinuous, slow-burning waltz of “twist” stands out in its bare lyricism and seems to invite each band member’s individual take on a confessional.

While 'Tracey Denim' was notable for its compact 2-3 minute compositions, horizontal and open-ended tracks like “Shoo” ebb and flow, moving from reptilian dive-bar soloing to a palpitating two-note piano coda. ‘glory-hunter’ takes playful twists and turns before ending up somewhere entirely different from where it started. “Real house wibes (desperate house vibes)” and “que surprise” imply sleepless, noirish misadventure, while at the other end of the light spectrum, “sounds like you had to be there” features some of the band’s most sweetly optimistic musical gestures yet. Closer “bibs” is a rare instance where all three can be heard in unison, as a procession of ghostly chords and lacerating feedback bookends the group’s most adventurous and rich set to date.

'The Twits' Tracklisting
01. my little tony
02. Real house wibes (desperate house vibes)
03. twist
04. worlds greatest emoter
05. calm down with me

Pretty Girls Make Graves - 'The New Romance' 20th Anniversary Edition

"This Is Emergency" (directed by Mike Ott and James Harris)

"All Medicated Geniuses"

stream / preorder 'The New Romance'

Today, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Pretty Girls Make Graves’ sophomore album, 'The New Romance'. Originally released in 2003, this was the Seattle punk band’s Matador Records debut.

After more than a decade out of print, the album will return to us in a limited edition white vinyl pressing in stores on November 3. Pre-order that HERE. A deluxe digital version also lands today on digital services and features two b-sides “Magic Lights,” newly available on streaming, and a cover of Bow Wow Wow’s home-taping anthem, “C-30 C-60 C-90 Go!” We’ve also posted remastered music videos for singles “All Medicated Geniuses” and “This is Our Emergency.”

Singer Andrea Zollo and guitarist J. Clark guest on the latest installment of our Matador Revisionist History podcast series alongside producer Phil Ek and our host, Matt Sweeney.

Pretty Girls Make Graves formed in Seattle in 2001. The members – Andrea Zollo, Derek Fudesco, J. Clark, Nick Dewitt, and Nathan Thelen – were already local underground luminaries, owing to their time in punk and hardcore bands like Death Wish Kids, Area 51, and Murder City Devils.

The quintet released an EP, a handful of 7” singles, and a full-length, Good Health (Lookout! Records), before getting a cold email from Matador Records founder Chris Lombardi, who may or may not have read a positive review in Pitchfork. A deal was struck and the band decamped to the bucolic Bear Creek studio to track 'The New Romance' with Ek.

In the podcast, Zollo and Clark go deep on the band’s early years, talking influences (Drive Like Jehu, Ink & Dagger, Fugazi), rock band do’s / don’ts, and what it’s like to practice riffs in a freezing cold paper mache igloo.

Out Today : Kurt Vile - 'Wakin On A Pretty Daze' (10th Anniversary Edition)

(photo: Shawn Brackbill)

Stream / Purchae limited vinyl for 'Wakin On A Pretty Daze'

We're pleased to (re)-announce that upon 10th anniversary of Kurt Vile's beloved fifth full-length and first 2xLP, ‘Wakin on a Pretty Daze’ (2013), we've released a special blue/yellow vinyl edition.

This limited pressing will also include a reproduction of the “make your own cover” ESPO sticker sheet that accompanied the original 2013 special-edition. A special 'Wakin' shirt designed by ESPO is also available to purchase separately or bundle with an LP on both webstores. A yellow vinyl version of the record is available everywhere.

Where previous albums alternated between gorgeous fingerpicking and heavy guitar workouts, ‘Wakin’ blended the two into dreamy and expansive songs that frequently stretched well out beyond the five-minute mark.

Back then we said: “It’s a record that would have sounded great 30 years ago, sounds great today, and will still sound great 30 years from now.” Ten years down the line, we’re still confident that ‘Wakin’ will deliver the goods – yesterday, today, and in 2043.

The reissue serves as the latest entry in Matador Records’ Revisionist History series, our ongoing campaign to jog the record-buying (and streaming!) public’s memory, though "jolt" could be used in place of :"jog".
