The MataBlog is edited by Matador Records’ co-moaner Gerard Cosloy and individual entries are the work of whoever’s name is next to them. If you enjoyed something in the MataBlog, thank you very much! If there was something you found particularly troubling, please be advised that a) maybe you should read it again and b) the contents of this blog do not necessarily represent the opinions of Matador Records, Beggars Group, the combined staff of either company, nor the Matador artist roster. Opinions are like friends — hardly anyone has one worth listening to.

Great Music For Terrible Times : 25% Off Holiday Sale

Dear Citizens of Earth,

As we reach the end of 2018, it would not be an exaggeration to say we’re in the midst of many difficult moments in human history.  The icecaps are melting.   America is on the brink of a constitutional crisis.  You can’t walk 15 feet in any major metropolis without breaking your neck on a discarded scooter.  Your personal data (including everything we collect in this campaign) is being used for nefarious means. Nearly 15% of the public believes we actually told someone to “sound more like Adele.”  Nearly $40 million was spent to produce “The Hurricane Heist”

All of that said, there is still beauty, mystery, and grandeur in what’s left of the fine arts.  And when you’re done with the fine arts, there’s Matador's incredible array of 2018 titles from Belle and Sebastian, Body/Head, boygenius, Car Seat Headrest, Lucy Dacus, Iceage, Interpol, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Liz Phair, Snail Mail, Kurt Vile and Yo La Tengo.  Will these records help you sort out a world gone mad? hey, they’re great, but not THAT GREAT.  Almost certainly, and that’s why your friends at Matador —a label as magnanimous as it is humble — are offering an unprecedented 25% OFF when you use the code, “terribletimes” thru December 13. Orders of $40.00 and above receive a free tote bag and take it from me, a tote bag skeptic, you’re way less likely to drop shit all over the sidewalk when you have a stylish bag.

Intended Play 2012 - For The Vinyl-Phobic Amongst, The Price Just Dropped From $2 To Free

(I really don't see the resemblance)

Back in early January WE SHOCKED THE MUSIC WORLD with news of a $1.98 Matador/True Panther Sounds sampler LP including (mostly) new songs from The Young, Ceremony, Lee Ranaldo Tanlines, Perfume Genius, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Fucked Up, Girls, Cold Cave, Esben and The Witch and Kurt Vile. It's come to our attention that a) there's a few stragglers out there who've yet to order this limited edition LP, and b) some of you either trashed your record players or simply prefer music in digital form.

So here's the deal --- you can still order the vinyl version from The Matador Store or hound your local retailer who might've filed it in THE $2 BIN.  Failing that, here's a free download of the entire compilation. You're welcome!

V/A - Intended Play (zip)

Fucked Up's MIDNIGHT MADNESS (Tonight): David Comes To Life On-Sale For $3.99 And Up + Much Virtual Storage

David Comes To Life - $3.99 and up

To celebrate the release of Fucked Up's David Comes To Life, the album will be on sale for $3.99 (in MP3) as "MIDNIGHT MADNESS" takes over  MatadorRecords.com starting at 12am EST tonight.

The catch is, the album will only be $3.99 for about 2 minutes. That's right.  From midnight until noon tomorrow, the price of the MP3 album will be steadily going up until it hits full price once again.

And that's not all....  while we can't compete with Fucked Up's physical world antics in Toronto, our version of "MIDNIGHT MADNESS" will also include a virtual pop-up store with a screening room, characters from the "story", a live webcam from Toronto "MIDNIGHT MADNESS" and a preview of our just about ready to launch "MataCloudTM."

Can't get your head around all of this?  That's cool, because all you will have to do is check back at this space in 15 hours to really understand.

Harlem 'Hippies' hits stores TODAY!

photo grabbed from Pooneh Ghana's flickr

A lot has happened since we met Harlem a few years ago. They've written 16 indelible pop songs, played shows across the nation, contributed to a compilation celebrating the one of the better music scenes going right now and beat us in a couple rounds of cee-lo... and in the midst of all that and more, they let us release a damn fine LP that we couldn't be more enthusiastic to yell, "drops today!"

You can grab 'Hippies' at many fine music retail outlets including your local record shop, favorite digital retailer (such as Amazon, emusic or iTunes) and Matador's online store.

And the fun's just getting started - Harlem plays a release show at Waterloo Records in Austin on April 11, Lollapalooza in August and a ton of other dates in between.

News From the True Panther Universe

[caption id="attachment_8074" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="LOVE IS IN THE AIR"][/caption]

It's snowing like crazy here in NYC but True Panther Sounds remains bundled up, huddled away and working hard. Taking a few precious moments every day to find good youtube videos, but also putting out a bunch of records. Wanted to give y'all the latest update in the True Panther Universe..

This last Tuesday, 3/23, we released two brand new records.

Hunx and His Punx' "Gay Singles"
We initially released a limited vinyl pressing this last year, but after blowing through them we re-pressed it on LP/CD/DA. It now has slightly different cover art, a cd that includes all the videos, better quality vinyl, and a free mp3 download with each record. PLUS it's cheaper than before. The songs are classic glammy, and gay. They've gotten better with each listen. Lookout for national and international tour dates in the next few months.
Order HERE (and get a free Chiphunx CD)

Morning Benders "Promises" 7"

This is a limited edition single from one of our favorite new bands. Their record is coming out on Rough Trade, but this first single is all ours! It's limited and features an exclusive b-side "Oh Annie", a more plaintive and restrained version of the band. Enjoy!
Order HERE
Promises (mp3)

We're also putting out 3 brand new 12"/digital records on March 9th! New releases from Tanlines, Lemonade, and Janka Nabay. Each record is a totally unique incantation of the dance music spirits- Janka electrified the Bubu dance music of his native Sierra Leone, Lemonade mixed every kind of electronic music from the last 30 years in a big caribbean fruit salad, and Tanlines are making "new music" , coalesced from tropical sounds and restrained house. We're just going to call it all "Yes Wave".

Get all three records in a bundle for only $25 and get instant downloads of the singles and a few exclusive remixes. Order HERE

Order Tanlines- Settings HERE
"Real Life" (mp3)
Order Lemonade- Pure Moods HERE
"Lifted" (mp3)

That's it for the update for now. Hope you enjoy the records. We have some great stuff on the burners for the new year, full-lengths from Glasser and Magic Kids. Releases from Teengirl Fantasy, The Bitters, and Real Estate. Stoked!!

Spiral Stairs live Seattle instore

SpiralStairs.instore.seattle

A little while back, Gerard may or may not have mentioned something about Spiral Stairs playing an instore in Seattle (by a while back I mean this morning and by "may or may not have mentioned" I mean he mapped it out in great detail... I just like suspense).

Well, dear friends, here it is... In celebration of the release of his first album under the SS moniker, Spiral is taking Seattle by free-live-instore storm. Check it. Don't wreck it.
