EMA : 'The Future's Void' Streaming via NPR's "First Listen" / Free Brooklyn Show Details

"Blending the expansive vision of speculative fiction with the often personal approach of gender-troubling indie rock, The Future's Void is not so much a concept record as a sonic alternate universe through which many elements float, some familiar and some weird. Musically, it blends the digital and analog in uncanny ways that unsettle any one interpretation." That's Ann Powers' take on EMA's 'The Future's Void', and 8 days in advance of the North American release of said LP/CD/digital album, NPR's "First Listen" is streaming the full album here.

As mentioned in this space last week , EMA will be playing Union Pool on Friday, April 11.  The only way to obtain a ticket is by purchasing  'The Future's Void' at one of the following NYC record stores starting Tuesday, April 8 :

The Future's Void is available for preorder on CD, Cassette and LP (limited edition lavender vinyl), and there's a shirt bundle, too.

EMA - "3Jane" Track Premiere, Union Pool Show On April 11.

In advance of April 8th's release of the new EMA LP/CD/digital album 'The Future's Void', here's a premiere of one of the album's standout tracks, "3Jane".

from Erika
:
No one was really ever that mean to me on the internet. I never had that “thing” that happens when you wake up one morning and somehow your life is ruined because a mortifying picture goes viral or a “funny” tweet becomes horribly misread. Sure, there were bitchy things in the comments of videos, but organized trolls never unleashed a wave of death threats on me, and only a few people suggested that I kill myself.

So the internet never actually did that to me. But it did that to somebody. And now we all have this stupid crippling fear that someday it will happen to us. And the likelihood increases as you move from relative obscurity to becoming more broadly visible on the internet. There are more cameras on you, more chances to be quoted saying something stupid, and more people out there who relish seeing successful people disgraced and dethroned.

Do you have that fear yet? Do you want it?

Another thing that really fucked me up is that somewhere along the way I feel like I lost control of my image. I feel very confident in making the music I want to make, but I’m not a Mouseketeer. I can try to do it all myself but I run out of time. I don’t know how to pose for a photographer and sometimes when I’m in front of somebody else’s camera I don’t know what to do. So I would do the thing that I had seen before a million times in fashion mags and advertisements because I wanted to do a “good job.” And little by little, these pictures became more sexy and pouty until I didn’t recognize myself anymore. And those images went all around, and the bold-faced pull quotes from articles that didn’t quite get it right were right there next to the too sexy images until they became a thing both separate from me and also made up of me. I got weird disassociation. I got a weird neuromancer and I dyed my hair black and unplugged.

Disassociation is a modern disease

I didn’t set out to write this song and I didn’t know when I wrote it a year ago that right now it would be ok to talk about the internet, because at the time it felt forbidden and shameful to talk about. It just all came out in a flood, a stream of consciousness. And I’m still kind of self-conscious that I said those things out loud. But I don’t think these feelings are unique to me, and I often find that the things that scare and embarrass you are the things that are worth saying.

At the end of the day all I can really do is tell the truth, the truth of what happened and how it made me feel. And if at that point, if you wanna call me a cunt in the youtube comments, that’s on you.

PS –so i wanted this missive to be perfect but instead i kind of just partied IRL. I found myself suddenly with friends and we are imbibing and watching funny videos and laughing. So that’s why this post is a little raw. And I think I’m ok with that.

Coming May 5 - Savages: Fuckers / Dream Baby Dream 12"

Can you believe it's nearly a year since the release of Silence Yourself?  In that time I moved house, reached an age milestone and got a dog.  Not to mention changing my hair colour three times and going on a juice cleanse.  Pretty sure some sorta midlife crisis thing is going on, especially as I'm sharing all this on the www right now.

To mark their milestone of one year since the release of their debut album, Savages are releasing a 12" of two new tracks.  Recorded live at the London Forum show on November 6, 2013 - exactly halfway through the band’s year - the record captures the full sonic intensity of Savages live performance on the 10-minute-plus ‘Fuckers’, the live set's notorious closer; as well as their more mesmeric side on a sinuous cover of Suicide’s timeless ‘Dream Baby Dream’.

'Fuckers / Dream Baby Dream' is out May 5/6 dependent on what side of the ocean you're on.  12" vinyl and Digital Download.

You can preorder the 12" from the following:

Matador Direct
Drift
Rough Trade
Jumbo
Or if you're digitally minded, iTunes

The release will coincide with two Savages-curated Pop Noire nights in east London, the first at The Shacklewell Arms on ‘Fuckers’ release day (May 5th), and the second at Birthdays on the anniversary of the ‘Silence Yourself’ album (May 6th).

Here is the line-up so far, with more artists to be confirmed:

UPDATE - SOME NEW INFO ON THE POP NOIRE NIGHTS BELOW:

5th May @ Shacklewell Arms (£6 entry)

ZZZs (Japan)

Bashan (Gemma Thompson – Savages)

+ Savages DJ set

6th May @ Birthdays (free entry)

Stephen Malkmus on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to hear an extended conversation between author/screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis (left) and guitarist/vocalist/fantasy sports enthusiast Stephen Malkmus (right)? Me neither, but your opportunity to do so can be found above!

Coming June 3 : Fucked Up's 'Glass Boys'

(filmed by Scott Cudmore & Jeremy Jansen)

On June 3, Matador will be releasing the new album from Toronto's FUCKED UP, 'Glass Boys' on LP, compact disc and digital download.

"Paper The House"
- MP3

Fucked Up's 'Chemistry Of Common Life' (2008 and 'David Comes To Life' (2011) were as conceptually ambitious as any rock albums in recent memory ; 'Glass Boys' while a more personal work in terms of subject matter, is the result of 13 months spent in a succession of U.S. and Canadian studios with the assistance of Bill Skibbe and Leon Taheny.  But while we're tempted to make a very big deal about how amazing the recording is (the guitar trio of Mike Haliechuk, Ben Cook, and Josh Zucker have delivered their most powerful & multi-dimensional performances to date), the real story's in the songs : with vocalist Damian Abraham leaving-it-all-on-the-floor (apologies for the sports analogy), Fucked Up are tackling tougher questions about themselves, their lives and where this is all going.    Our modestly compensated blurb author called 'Glass Boys', "a blazing, titanic, ultimately triumphant rock album...a heart-expanding, life-affirming piece of work."  I still need to check what WebMD says about heart-expansion, but other than that, I think he nailed it.

Preorder the album now from the Matador Store. A limited double vinyl edition of the album available through the Matador store and independent retailers will include a bonus LP that features Jonah Falco's half-time drums ( two separate drum tracks were recorded for 'Glass Boys', one of them in half-time --- if that sounds kinda complex, wait 'til you hear both at the same time).

We're also offering 'Glass Boys' in the format of your choice with a limited edition tote bag, available exclusively from The Matador Store.

New Orleans red beans and rice

Recipe was adapted from John Thorne's Serious Pig, a must-buy for anyone interested in American regional cuisine, or just great food prose in general:

The classic recipe calls for a cracked ham bone with generous pieces of meat left on it, or alternatively New Orleans pickled pork, neither of which I had to hand. What I did have was copious quantities of ham stock in the freezer from my Christmas ham, as well as $2 worth of pork neck bones from Flushing's Chinatown (and two bucks buys you a lot of those there). Some chorizo or kielbasa was also recommended - all I could easily source was Goya chorizo. I stand by this shit. Cheap and good.

The beans were Rancho Gordo sangre de toro, part of their Xoxoc Project for working with indigenous farmers to preserve Mesoamerican bean varieties that are in danger of going extinct. These small, sumptuous red beans are far tastier than regular kidney beans, and closer to the small kidneys used in Louisiana. Also, most importantly, I had a bag of them.

So here's the recipe - pretty simple, just allow yourself a lot of time.

- 1 cup small dried red beans, soaked overnight, reserving the soaking water
- up to 1 quart ham stock
- 2 lbs pork neck bones
- 2 Goya chorizo sausages, cut into 1/8-1/4" discs
- 1/2 green bell pepper, diced
- 1/2 red bell pepper, diced
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 celery stalk, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 sprig fresh thyme
- 1 small, hot red chile seeded and minced
- 1 small bunch flat-leaf parsley, minced
- 3-4 scallions, finely minced, green and white parts, half of which reserve uncooked

Blanch the pork neck bones from a cold start, boiling 1-2 minutes, drain and set aside.

Put beans in a heavy pot, cover with 1 quart ham stock, filling out with reserved soaking liquid as need be, add some salt, bring to a hard boil for 10 minutes, reduce flame and simmer for at least 1 hour, adding more soaking liquid as necessary, until beans are tender.

Meanwhile, melt 2 tbs butter in a skillet or large pot over medium heat and cook onions, both bell peppers and celery until soft (6-8 minutes). Add garlic, scallions and parsley and saute for another 2 minutes. Add bay leaves and sausage and saute for another 2 minutes.

Add saute contents to bean pot with all other ingredients, salt and pepper to taste (keeping in mind that the ham stock and chorizo will have some salt already), bring to a boil, and and cook from 1 1/2 to 4 hours at a bare simmer, adding more reserved bean liquid (or hot water if you run out) as necessary. As the beans and other ingredients really begin to soften, mash them up against the side of the pot and stir the pulp back into the main liquid to thicken it.

Make rice to taste towards the end of the cooking period and serve beans and its gravy on top of it. Scatter reserved uncooked minced scallions on top. Place on table with condiments to taste (suggested: hot sauce, chopped raw onions, chopped raw scallion, chiles in vinegar, or really whatever you like).

Head over to www.readingfestival.com for more info and of course ...Like Clockwork is out now and available from all good independent record stores.

Watch Polish free jazz combo cover Queens of the Stone Age

Actually it's a bit unfair to reduce Polish musician Gabriele Kulka to just a genre label, so call this whatever you like. A truly memorable & new take on "Keep Your Eyes Peeled" by Queens of the Stone Age from this talented group of Polish musicians.

Reminder: Yo La Tengo Beach Party Tonight! (or tomorrow)

Starting tomorrow Yo La Tengo hit the beach in Australia and New Zealand for 5 shows. Whether or not these actually take place on a beach remains to be seen, but as I write in the drizzle of London, I can only imagine that Australia is all shorts, surfboards and beaches. You guys are so lucky.
