In May, The New Pornographers’ sophomore album ‘Electric Version’ (2003) celebrated its 20th anniversary. A limited blue vinyl reissue hits stores today and we’ve also dedicated this latest episode of our Matador Revisionist History podcast to the record, with the band’s A.C. Newman joining longtime Matador publicist Nils Bernstein for a stroll down memory lane with our host, Matt Sweeney.

The Matador Revisionist History Podcast

They discuss how ‘Electric Version’ defied the un-follow-up-able-ness of ‘Mass Romantic,’ how LA neo-hippies Beachwood Sparks inspired the record’s title, and supply a complete track-by-track walkthrough.

“As much as it’s this hard-driving record with these exciting songs that have a lot of information, there’s still a lot of ups and downs and emotional twists and turns,” recalls Bernstein. “It’s just hook after hook after hook.”

The era-appropriate rarity “Turn” – originally a Japan-only bonus track – is now available on streaming services. Newly pristine remasters of the “All For Swinging You Around” and “The Laws Have Changed” music videos are also now on YouTube.

The New Pornographers have dates planned throughout the fall, touring songs from their just-released ninth album, ‘Continue as a Guest’ (Merge). Find a complete itinerary below.

This week, Matador Records will celebrate the 20th anniversary of The New
Pornographers’ second full-length, 'Electric Version' – first released May 6, 2003 – with a limited-edition opaque blue vinyl reissue out September 22. Today, the band’s era-appropriate rarity “Turn” – originally a Japan-only bonus track – will make its debut on streaming services. Newly pristine remasters of the “All For Swinging You Around” and “The Laws Have Changed” music videos will also be made available on YouTube.

As for the music: no sophomore slumping to be found here. Back then we wrote, “Withmimpossibly huge hooks and an innate understanding of every pop trick in the book, this follow-up to 2000’s breakthrough Mass Romantic is the most exciting pop record we’ve heard in a long while.” For once, tastemakers of the day shared our enthusiasm. “The
New Pornographers mix the pop purism of the Beach Boys, the power charge of Cheap Trick and the gentle psychedelia of Syd Barrett,” wrote the New York Times, who labeled 'Electric Version', “some of the best pop of the year.”

The New Pornographers have dates planned throughout the spring and fall, touring songs from their just-released ninth album, 'Continue as a Guest' (Merge). Regarding the new record, Rolling Stone called it, "an LP that delivers its vivid emotional payoff in subtle gestures...the results can be magisterial." Find a complete itinerary below.

"Letter From An Occupant"
directed by Michael Dowse

After a wait we can only describe as, well, exactly what we promised and you should've by all rights expecting , Matador Records is celebrating the 21st anniversary of The New Pornographers’ debut record and breakout, 'Mass Romantic' (2000), with a limited-edition LP reissue out today.

The album – clocking three singers and 12 effervescent and undeniable power-pop gems – will return to us on red vinyl and will include a bonus 7”, Letter From An Occupant, which includes two rare B-sides, “The End of Medicine” and “When I Was a Baby.”

(STREAM / PURCHASE 'Mass Romantic')
Everyone wants to be successful but, hand to my heart, I had no delusions of success for The New Pornographers. To be here over 20 years later, still in the game, is something that I simultaneously take for granted (you just get used to it) and feel eternally grateful for. Been here so long that we can do one of those “let’s play that old album all the way through!” gigs. And we are doing just that. 2 nights per city: 1 Mass Romantic, 1 Twin Cinema, plus assorted “hits” from our storied career. Bejar is coming and God knows if we’ll get him again. When he moved to Spain 2 months after Mass Romantic came out, I thought he was done in the band and now 21 years later we’ve convinced him to come along for another ride. Just the nature of our band that it’s a special occasion when all the singers show up. Here’s to you showing up as well! - Carl Newman

The New Pornographers formed in Vancouver in 1997. The whole thing was Carl Newman’s idea – recruiting his favorite local talents Seven Samurai-style for an album that might stand up amidst their already formidable solo careers.

At the time, the parties involved included Newman, Dan Bejar (Destroyer), Neko Case, John Collins, Kurt Dahle, Fisher Rose, and Blaine Thurier.

All told, 'Mass Romantic' took three years to complete and was initially released in 2000 on Mint Records. From there, momentum seemed to build one members-only message board post at a time, with a small and vocal crowd of fans giving rise to wider excitement – critical praise, radio play, a Juno Award, Ray Davies jumping on stage at SXSW, and so on.

The old-fashioned record industry-types at Matador first learned of The New Pornographers through a store, Aquarius Records. In its newsletter, the much-missed San Francisco institution called 'Mass Romantic' “absolutely shiningly great power pop” and “recommended for everyone.” The shop stumped for the record fervently – playing it, displaying it, and generally carrying on about the music to all who would listen. In just one year, Aquarius moved somewhere near 200 copies.

Nobody at Matador (well, almost nobody) could argue with that and the label licensed the 'Mass Romantic' album  for distribution in Europe and, ultimately, signed the band outright, giving the record a wide reissue in 2002.

And plenty of stuff happened after that! What’s important, though, is that The New Pornographers are going on tour (EDITOR'S NOTE : that's been happening for a little while now), 'Mass Romantic' is turning 21, and the record is back on shelves today.

Coming December 10 : The New Pornographers - 'Mass Romantic' 21st Anniversary Reissue

"Letter From An Occupant"
directed by Michael Dowse

This fall, Matador Records will celebrate the 21st anniversary of The New Pornographers’ debut record and breakout, 'Mass Romantic' (2000), with a limited-edition LP reissue out 12/10.

The album – clocking three singers and 12 effervescent and undeniable power-pop gems – will return to us on red vinyl and will include a bonus 7”, Letter From An Occupant, which includes two rare B-sides, “The End of Medicine” and “When I Was a Baby.”

(STREAM / PREORDER 'Mass Romantic')

What’s more, The New Pornographers will tour the U.S. and Canada this fall playing a series of two-night stands – performing Mass Romantic in its entirety on the first night and running down the equally outstanding Twin Cinema (16th Anniversary!) on the next. Throughout this trip, the band’s lineup will feature AC Newman, Dan Bejar, Joe Seiders, John Collins, Kathryn Calder, and Neko Case, and Todd Fancey.
Everyone wants to be successful but, hand to my heart, I had no delusions of success for The New Pornographers. Matador At Austin's Mid-March Trade Fair : Get Off My Lawn (And Stay In My Overpriced AirBNB Instead) Edition

Alright, the moment is almost upon us. Well, upon me, actually. The moment when my adopted hometown is overrun by the craven, the venal, the self-important and self-entitled hordes demanding free drinks, free drugs and drowning out all nuanced musical performances with their hyena-like cackling. But enough about the Matador staff, there's loads of other horrible people descending on Austin and they DESERVE to know exactly where and when Ceremony, Iceage, Steve Gunn and The New Pornographers are appearing. And as such, Robby has carefully amended a classic Mark Ohe Matador flyer (above) --- he was under strict instructions to "appropriate that shit like Robin Thicke", and we couldn't be happier with the results. Short of the entire week being cancelled, that is. See you in the pit(s of hell).

The New Pornographers live on World Cafe NOW, KEXP later today

Hello, radio aficionados. If you have a hankering for live in-studio goodness from The New Pornographers, you can count yourself doubly lucky today because

1. You can head over to World Cafe's website right now and check out Carl and the gang's session with David Dye. (Or, if you prefer your radio sessions to have a radio frequency involved, you can click around on that very same site to find out when your local NPR affiliate airs the show. World Cafe is really popular, so your local NPR station probably airs it!)

2. If only the exquisite frisson of LIVE ON-AIR PERFORMANCE does it for you, flip your dial over to Seattle's KEXP today at 4:00PM EDT/1:00PM PDT to hear The New Pornographers live on the Cheryl Waters show. Tune in at 90.3FM, or listen online at KEXP.org.

Both sessions will involve songs from the new New Pornographers album, Brill Bruisers, in support of which the band has just launched a tour (dates are below). You can also buy the album in all the popular formats of the day by going to our store.
