If you enjoyed something in the MataBlog, thank you very much! If there was something you found particularly troubling, please be advised that a) maybe you should read it again and b) the contents of this blog do not necessarily represent the opinions of Matador Records, Beggars Group, the combined staff of either company, nor the Matador artist roster. Opinions are like friends — hardly anyone has one worth listening to.

Green Day Out Buy Early Get Nows Us

[caption id="attachment_19745" align="alignright" width="193" caption="photo: Nabil Ayers "][/caption]

If Feist would finally confirm to host the first-ever "Christoper Pell Lombardi Awards For Excellence In Convoluted Marketing Schemes", the fourth installment of Buy Early Get Now (aka The New Ps "Box Of Air") would finally get its due in the Lifetime Achievement category.   (Note:  Dave Martin still maintains that only time will help folks discover BEGN #4's genius, and Dave knows both time and genius.)

So here we are, five years and two IHeartRadio Festivals later...and the majors have finally decided to embark on the trail toward customer confusion that we so dutifully blazed.   To wit, Green Day's foray into the world of selling futures in music.

And because other members of the Matador family have done a far better job lampooning Billie and friends, I'll leave only a link to this space where we can all watch customer ire unfold in real time:

Picture 469

Thanks to the folks at BuyCostumes.com, for a mere $34.99 your kids can celebrate All Hallows Eve done up like the bastard love kid of Wattie and one of the stars of "District 9". There's no truth to the rumor, btw, the young model above was the subject of a recent bidding war won by Fat Possum. There's even less truth to the rumor Matador made the higher offer, but talks broke down over choice of producer. (costume link courtesy Henry Owings)

A Palm Beach County girl is getting a rock star send off from Fort Lauderdale airport today as the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida sends her to meet rock star and outdoorsman Ted Nugent.

Brianna Curry, 6, of Jupiter is battling a brain tumor and became of fan of Nugent by watching his reality show "Spirit of the Wild" on the Outdoor Channel. Make-A-Wish Foundation officials say Brianna even enjoys the rocker's music.

During her wish vacation, Brianna, her parents and 4-year-old brother will spend four days in Texas during which she'll meet Nugent on the set of his program at the Spirit Wild Ranch in China Spring, TX.

Wear the Good-Cause Hat: Anna Ives vs. Cancer

Anna Ives is the very young, very adorable daughter of Zac and Amy Ives. Zac is co-owner of Goner Records, the singer for Final Solutions, and a flat-out great guy. The Goner Records BBS is currently holding an auction while Zac, Amy, and Anna are in Boston, where the latter is receiving specialized radiation treatment. The auction is to help offset the Ives' mounting hospital bills. I'm here to encourage Matablog readers to either bid on some of the great finds that have made it to the block, and to offer their own donated items for auction. All of the needed information, including Anna's story, can be found HERE.

The auction can be found HERE.

The Last Days of Polaroid, featuring Times New Viking

If like me, you consider yourself a budding artist and photographer, seeing beauty in our concrete jungle and capturing those happy days of youth on film and uploading them onto various social networking sites; you may have once invested in a Polaroid camera.

The Polaroid camera caters for the needs of the impatient - to achieve that instantaneous hit of immediacy and to document the here and now. Sadly, in the past few months, Polaroid have decided to discontinue manufacturing the blessed Polaroid film. Within the next few months there will be no Polaroid film left.

Thankfully I managed to snap up some film in advance of the recent UK ShredYrFace tour with Times New Viking, No Age and Los Campesinos!

I could think of no better way to use my final Polaroid film than to document the 10 day SYF journey. The highs, the lows, the good times and the hungover mornings. For your viewing pleasure :

Mad props going out to Annette Lee for her scan and Photoshop efforts.

Mexico : A Place Where "Emo Must Die" Is No Mere Figure Of Speech

Exclaim's Brock Thiessan reports "in recent weeks, a wave of emo bashings has swept across Mexico".  To which I can only add, Matador Records Is Very Opposed To Hate Crimes, but if you must commit a hate crime...can't you target Widespread Panic fans, instead?

According to Daniel Hernandez, who’s been covering the anti-emo riots on his blog Intersections, the violence began March 7, when an estimated 800 young people poured into the Mexican city of Queretaro’s main plaza “hunting” for emo kids to pummel. Then the following weekend similar violence occurred in Mexico City at the Glorieta de Insurgents, a central gathering space for emos. Hernandez also reports that several anti-emo riots have now also spread to various other Mexican cities. Via the Austin American Statesmen, several postings on Mexican social-networking sites, primarily organising spot for these “emo hunts,” have been dug up and translated. One states: “I HATE EMOS!!! They are not even people, they are so stupid, they cry over meaningless things… My school is infested with them, I want to kill them all!”

Another says: “We’ve never seen all the urban tribes unite against one single tribe before… Emos, their way of thinking is for crap, if you are so depressed please do us all a favour and kill yourselves!”

More recent reports state that the emos have begun to fight back against the other “urban tribes” and organised marches in Guadalajara and Mexico City, escalating the violence and leading to increased police presence. Also, some Mexican newspapers, such as El Porvenir, have called for government intervention to protect the emos, writing, “It’s the responsibility of the authorities to make sure the threats aren’t carried out and the aggressions are punished.”

Patrick Amory: March 12, 1983

Painstakingly fished from the Live at The Bradford Ballroom, March 12, 1983 DVD that accompanies Vs.

Dead Meadow get got.

Every Sunday at midnight, or at least first thing Monday morning, I On-Demand (my verb) the next Wire episode. So, this morning while I've been trudging through other concerns, the 2/3 episode has played twice in the background. I won't give anything away, but let's just say that McNulty offers his critical take on Dead Meadow. No, let's just say that Marlo's people make a buy at a Dead Meadow show. No, let's just say that Dead Meadow play a secret show at the mission. No, let's just say that Senator Clay Davis rocks some Dead Meadow in the car. No, let's just say that I'm more than a little stressed about this Just Farr A Laugh legal problem. For real.

Hamburger

This hamburger is about to be eaten. It took me two minutes to do so. It's based on a recipe by James Beard. The ground beef is mixed thoroughly with half a grated onion, about 2-3 tbs heavy cream, and freshly ground pepper. It's then cooked in butter and oil over high heat in a cast iron pan for about 5 minutes a side, so that it's totally seared on the outside and very rare in the inside. As you can see, it's served on a buttered English muffin. No condiments are needed - just salt and maybe a slice of onion. It's buttery, onion-y, fatty and heavy. I ate it with a side of boiled, buttered green beans. I think now I'll have a Tahiti cookie for dessert.

Shat In The (Linkin Park's) Van!!

No square inch of scenery left to chew, no square inch of Shatner's ass to kiss, and no clips of the interview on YouTube yet, but one can enjoy Mike Patton exploring everything that happened in music between The Infectious Grooves and Linkin Park!

We (Still) Believe That Children Are The Future...

...however, that doesn't mean these tykes weren't way out of line when they told Tom Surgall to fuck off and made their own video instead. Video link from Popbitch (thanks to Natalie Judge for the heads up)

Cliffbos, Mandybos and Humperdinkbos

Sir Cliff

From yesterday's Guardian:

A new weapon in the fight against antisocial youth has been discovered: Cliff Richard records.

The organisers of a travelling funfair have found that a few bars of The Young Ones is enough to instantly disperse a gang of unruly teenagers.

"You don't really need Asbos when you've got Cliffbos," said Seth Carter from the family-run Carters Steam Fair.

Last Saturday the travelling funfair was in Hayes, Essex, when Mr Carter became concerned about the intimidating behaviour of a gang of about 20 teenagers dressed in hoodies.

The fair's ploy is the latest use of sonic warfare in tackling antisocial behaviour.

Last year the Local Government Association urged councils to use the "Manilow method" to break up gangs. The recommendation came after the authorities in Sydney, Australia drove away gangs in car parks by playing them Copacabana and Mandy.

The LGA produced a list of 20 songs that would deter teenagers. Top of the list was Release Me, by Englebert Humperdinck. Cliff Richard's Mistletoe and Wine appeared at number 19.

Land of the Free, Home of the Metal Names

Note to recently proud papa Adam Farrell: maybe Ella's nickname should be 'TimesNewViking?' What do you think? From our friends at the Associated Press:

Metallica may be a cool name for a heavy metal band, but a Swedish couple is struggling to convince officials it is also suitable for a baby girl.

Michael and Karolina Tomaro are locked in a court battle with Swedish authorities, which rejected their application to name their six-month-old child after the legendary rock band.

"It suits her," Karolina Tomaro, 27, said Tuesday of the name. "She's decisive and she knows what she wants."

Although little Metallica has already been baptized, the Swedish National Tax Board refused to register the name, saying it was associated with both the rock group and the word "metal."

Tomaro said the official handling the case also called the name "ugly."

The couple was backed by the County Administrative Court in Goteborg, which ruled on March 13 that there was no reason to block the name. It also noted that there already is a woman in Sweden with Metallica as a middle name.

The tax agency appealed to a higher court, frustrating the family's foreign travel plans.

"We've had to cancel trips and can't get anywhere because we can't get her a passport without an approved name," Tomaro said.

Ironically enough, if I recall correctly, original Metallica bassist Cliff Burton met his untimely demise in the home country of Jesper Eklow, so Swedish National Tax Board, if you're listening/reading and asking "For Whom the Bell Tolls," well it tolls for thee.

Girls Aloud get political

Girls Aloud interview for The New Statesman

link via Popjustice

My beloved Girls Aloud get their Noam Chomsky on:

Nadine: "You know that basically Labour is the working class and the Conservatives are the really, kind of, upper class, and then everything else is . . . I have no idea."

Foolhardy Nadine later has an awesome rant about footballer's wives, momentarily forgetting that her bandmate Cheryl is one.

Their Greatest Hits album, out now, is disappointingly low on Billy Bragg covers.
