Coming June 3 : Steve Gunn - 'Eyes On The Lines', "Conditions Wild" video premiere

"Conditions Wild" - directed by Brandon Herman

We're thrilled to announce the release of a new album from guitarist/songwriter Steve Gunn, 'Eyes On The Lines', coming June 3rd, worldwide. . Gunn’s music has always embraced expanse and movement, springing from the simple and profound relationship between humans and their environment. 'Eyes On The Lines', the follow-up to Gunn’s pastoral and highly acclaimed 'Way Out Weather', is his most explicit ode to the blissful uncertainty of adventure yet.

Accompanied by a full band --- Nathan Bowles (drums, banjo, organ), Hans Chew (wurlitzer), James Elkington (guitar, lap steel, dobro), Mary Lattimore (harp), Jason Meagher (bass, guitar, flute), Paul Sukeena, Justin Tripp (bass, keyboards), John Truscinski (drums), and (electric, guitar) –-- 'Eyes On The Lines' presents Gunn embracing his urban surroundings through a series of songs that showcase his extraordinary ability to match inventive hooks to deftly constructed melodies full of personality.

Throughout 'Eyes On The Lines', Gunn is more narrator than diarist as he pours real-life moments and real-life people into vibrant and evocative tales. Take debut single, “Conditions Wild,” for example. Directly inspired by Rebecca Solnit’s A Field Guide to Getting Lost, Gunn rambles through strange clouds of roving -- interlocking strings, percussion, and vocals join in an irrepressible rush. It’s accompanying, highly-stylized video, directed by Brandon Herman, phenomenally captures the notion of finding comfort in getting lost and embracing the unknown, an important concept to Gunn in his songwriting and playing, and the creation of 'Eyes On The Lines' as a whole.

Steve Gunn will be touring extensively all over Europe and North America this year. All confirmed dates are below.

Coming May 20 : Car Seat Headrest - Teens Of Denial

"Drunk Drivers / Killer Whales"

On May 20, Matador will be releasing the new Car Seat Headrest 2XLP/CD/digital album, 'Teens Of Denial'. Though it's the 13th album to date for Will Toledo, it's the first CSH album to be recorded in a pro-style recording environment with a full band and acclaimed producer-person (specifically, Steve Fisk). Following the previously leaked "Vincent", the album's second single, "Drunk Drivers / Killer Whales" is available today. As Will explains, the song is about "post-party melancholia. Wishing to either be a better person or care less about the whole deal. Going home alone, in poor condition. The ‘killer whales’ bit is inspired by Blackfish, which is a depressing film.”

"You have no right to be depressed
You haven’t tried hard enough to like it"

There are two kinds of great lyrics.  The first is the banger/anthem catch phrase: "Normal life is borin' / but superstardom is close to post-mortem." The second is more complex (and more rarely found): "Like a bird on a wire / Like a drunk in a midnight choir/I have tried in my way to be free" — with ideas, themes, and personae unfolding over the course of songs, contradicting each other, confronting the listeners' preconceptions, like Pete Townshend, Morrissey, or Kendrick Lamar.

Will Toledo, the singer/songwriter/visionary of Car Seat Headrest, is adept at both, having developed them over the course of his eleven college-recorded Bandcamp albums and his retrospective collection last fall, Teens of Style.

"I’m so sick of / (Fill in the blank)" or "It’s more than you bargained for / But it's a little less than what you paid for" are more than smart, edgy slogans.  Over the course of Teens of Denial's 11 songs, Will narrates a journey with his mysterious companion/alter-ego Joe that addresses big themes (personal responsibility, existential despair, the nature of identity, the Bible, heaven) and small ones (Air Jordans, cops, whether to have one more beer, why he lost his backpack).

“Fill in The Blank,” the mission statement of the album, kicks things off — it’s a fist-pumping anthem about feeling lousy in an ill-defined way, the fear of settling into a routine of futility, and not wanting to deal with it.  Although it’s oddly joyful sounding, Toledo considers it the introduction to his angriest record yet. In that vein, “Vincent,” “Hippie Powers,” and “Connect The Dots” are about both fighting to hold your place in the crowd and to hold your drink, as well as DIY college house shows, and having no one to dance with, respectively.  Initially similar, "Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales” veers off in surprising directions, each piece flush with catchy, irony-free hooks.

At the heart of the album sits the 11:32 "Ballad of the Costa Concordia," which has more musical ideas than most whole albums (and at that length, it uses them all).  Horns, keyboards, and elegant instrumental interludes set off art-garage moments; vivid vocal harmonies follow punk frenzy.  The selfish captain of the capsized cruise liner in the Mediterranean in 2013 becomes a metaphor for struggles of the individual in society, as experienced by one hungover young man on the verge of adulthood.

Teens of Denial refracts Toledo's particular, personal story of one difficult year through cultural touchstones such as the biography of Frank Sinatra, the evolution of the Me Generation as seen in Mad Men and elsewhere, plus elements of Eastern and Western theology. The whole thing flaunts a kind of conceptual, lyrical, and musical ambition that has been missing from far too much 21st-century music.

"I won’t go down with this shit
I will put my hands up and surrender
There will be no more flags above my door
I have lost, and always will be"

There are two kinds of great lyricists.  The first kind is one you find in books, canonized by time and a lifetime of expression.  The second has it all in front of him.  Meet Will Toledo.  Or at least one version of him.

The Ten "Best" Perfume Genius Tweets of 2016 In Honor Of Twitter's 10th Birthday

In honor of Twitter's 10th Birthday, I decided to cull together ten of my personal favorite Perfume Genius tweets from this year, so far. It would have been way too emotionally draining to go back farther. There are just too many exceptional ones as you can gauge from below.

The latter's John Brandon suggests, "NASA might consider making (this) a playlist for their next mission", and since every single one of us is an aspiring astronaut (EDITOR'S NOTE : can we get some stats on this before publishing?) we're clearly talking about an early album-of-the-year candidate. Yo La Tengo In Covers-For-Cash-Controversy

Reigning Greatest Radio Station In The World WFMU features no advertising and no underwriting, they're impervious to the nudges and bags of drugs provided by record labels like American Century Matador, and most importantly, their legion of volunteer programmers (record-hound degenerates, most of 'em) routinely pull up the greatest shit (old & new) imaginable. There are several of this label's best-known artists who received their earliest airplay on WFMU ; others still, had their minds polluted at an early age and CAUGHT THE BUG (if you'll excuse the expression) as a direct result of this Jersey City based broadcaster.

So how, pray tell, do these maniacs keep the lights on? Simple--- BEGGING, hi tech and otherwise. WFMU is 100% listener supported and without hounding the living shit out of you for two weeks every March, the station's astonishing vault of online/archived programming would be a fond, though faint memory. No one is more aware of these circumstances than Yo La Tengo --- heck, Ira Kaplan even spends hours he could otherwise devote to answering your fan mail by toiling as a fill-in host for WFMU. So once again, as they've done for most years (including those from remote locations), Ira, Georgia and James will return to WFMU this coming Saturday, March 12 between 3 and 6pm (with hosts Todd-o-Phonic Todd and Gaylord Fields) and will perform cover songs of your choosing in exchange for lavish sums wrested from your bank account. Ever wanted to hear YLT's version of "Formation"? Longed to hear their take on "Take On Me?" Me neither. In fact, there might not be enough money on earth to get them to play either of those songs, but you'll never know unless you offer. And unlike the rest of WFMU's amazing offerings, this show will not be archived, so blow this one off at your own risk.

WFMU can be heard worldwide at wfmu.org and you can pledge whatever's left in your swear jar/trust fund / structured settlement right here.

Algiers - New Dates With "Burn To Shine" Screenings

(photo : Titouan Massé)

Algiers have announced a run of East Coast tour dates that will be accompanied by screenings of the sixth installment of Brendan Canty (Fugazi) and Christoph Green’s Burn To Shine film series. After being delayed for nearly a decade, Burn To Shine 6: Atlanta will premiere on April 9th at The EARL in Atlanta, with performances by Algiers and Moon Diagrams (Moses Archuleta of Deerhunter).

The filmmakers and Algiers will then take the screenings up the East Coast (the latter's full list of tour dates below includes Coachella and Panorama Festival), with the film available at burntoshineatlanta.com following the April 13th screening in NYC

Producer Brendan Canty and Director Christoph Green filmed 6 editions of Burn To Shine with their roving crew of shooters and audio geeks between 2004 and 2007, which included the likes of Wilco, Sleater-Kinney, Shellac, The Shins, Eddie Vedder, Tortoise, Will Oldham, Ted Leo, and many more.

Burn To Shine 6: Atlanta full line-up includes performances by Shannon Wright, The Selmanaires, The Liverhearts, Deerhunter, the Carbonas, The Black Lips, The Mighty Hannibal, Delia Gartrell, The Coathangers, All Night Drug Prowling Wolves, Mastadon, and Snowden.

After being delayed for nearly a decade, this Atlanta installment, curated by Lee Tesche of Algiers, holds vitality like no other, showing a music scene and city in transition, where generations past collide with major bands on the rise, capturing artists at the height of their powers, a few local legends who have since disappeared, and others that have gone on to much wider success.

April 11 - Carrboro, NC - Cat’s Cradle - Burn To Shine screening
