Queens of the Stone Age perform Vampyre of Time and Memory on Conan

Keep your eyes peeled (as they say) for the Vampyre video coming soon.

King Krule - "Easy Easy" live on David Letterman

You know em when you see em, and though I can't think of single other example at this moment, I know they're out there (HELLO COMMENTS SECTION!): television appearances that herald an artist's arrival, and that capture an unforgettable moment in time. It's a special thing to be there when it happens, or around the corner at a bar:

or try this version:

King Krule's debut album 6 Feet Beneath The Moon is on sale now. Like, at a discount!

Savages - 'Marshal Dear' video

Ahead of tomorrow's Mercury Prize awards (get those bets in now!) Savages share their Slaughterhouse Five inspired video for 'Marshal Dear', taken from their debut album Silence Yourself (Matador Store, iTunes).

Inspired by a scene in Kurt Vonnegut’s classic novel about a disillusioned American soldier recounting his experiences of the Second World War and his adventures in time travel, guitarist Gemma Thompson scripted a rough version of the storyboard based upon one scene in particular with the intent on finding a young animator who had worked on animating by hand. After two months of watching portfolio reels, she eventually found the work of Gergely Wootsch, a London animation director just graduated from the RCA.

The scene from the novel occurs whilst main protagonist Billy believes he has become ‘‘unstuck in time.’‘ He turns on the TV and focuses on a scene in a movie about bombers in the Second World War. The aircraft take-off backwards from an airfield, flying backwards over cities in flame. The exploded bombs and shrapnel begin to piece themselves together and rise back into the bellies of the aircraft and the bullets are sucked out of the bodies of the fallen men. The bombs are eventually brought back to the factory in which they were constructed, dismantled and the elements placed back into the earth.

Speaking of the video, Gemma says “This scene would replay in my head and I could imagine it as an animation of lines flowing into each other, much like early hand-drawn animation created to accentuate a musical score. I also thought it was beautiful how Billy tries to right the process of destruction and how this echoed the true story of the character in the song Marshal Dear - Field Marshal Rommel’s attempted assassination of Hitler to end the Second World War which resulted in him being forced to take his own life to spare those of his family. We worked on bringing the character of the factory worker into the fore so that the animation now focused on the role of the woman working in the factory and the bomb itself as she realises her hand in the destruction.”

Lou Reed, 1942-2013

As you've probably read elsewhere, Lou Reed passed away earlier today. It's almost impossible to quantify the impact Lou's music and lyrics have made on this-thing-we're-involved-in ;  arguably, he did more to help shape the sensibilities of this label's roster (and many others' of course) than any other single figure.  Minds blown (repeatedly), lives changed, etc., imagining music (or New York City) without Lou Reed is something we never wanted to contemplate.   Our thoughts are with his family, friends, collaborators and everyone else listening to his records this afternoon.

Esben and the Witch for London Oct 31st show

(Attempting to avoiding mention of the "H" word...) Esben and the Witch play a one-off show at London's Barfly on October 31st, for the crazily cheap price of £1.25 (booking fee for a free ticket) to guarantee entry for the night, available here.

Having just finished their co-headline tour with Thought Forms and Teeth Of the Sea, recent reviews of their live shows include The Quietus calling the band "a visceral and thrilling presence on stage", so make the most of this chance for the chance of some new material from the Brighton trio.

Kurt Vile - "Feel My Pain" MP3 - from the 'It's A Big World Out There (And I Am Scared)' EP

As previously touted in this space
, on November 19, we're releasing a new, 7-song 12" EP from Kurt Vile, 'It's A Big World Out There (And I Am Scared)' (preorder here) ; all 7 tracks will comprise the bonus disc on the 2XCD, 'Wakin On A Pretty Daze: Deluxe Daze (Post Haze)', also in stores November 19 (preorder here).  Here's an MP3 from from the new EP, "Feel My Pain"

"Feel My Pain" - MP3

Kurt writes :
This track was recorded during the first cluster of sessions at Dreamland Studios, May 2012.
(same sessions that conjured up most of album opener "wakin on a pretty day" I should add!)

"Feel My Pain" is a particularly meticulous guitar composition that i remember playing over and over back when writing it and then even more so when i had finished it, sort-of possessed.

We added a lot to this later only to strip it back again favoring the raw to the chamber-pop this go 'round. Spectral arrangement and a mellow-ominous delivery (if such a thing is possible)...

Inauthentic tagine of chicken with habaneros and black olives

It's getting cooler and darker here so I pulled out the unglazed tagine and improvised a highly unauthentic (i.e., non-Mediterranean) tagine of chicken with habaneros, cayenne peppers and olives.

Recipe:

I gently warmed a quarter-cup of olive oil in the tagine over a flame tamer on medium heat. Sauteed two cloves of minced garlic, one minced orange habanero and one minced medium-hot long Indian green chile until garlic changed color.

Added a mixture of 1 tsp each ground cumin, black pepper, sweet paprika, and 1/2 tsp each ground Ceylonese cinnamon and Indian medium-hot dried red chiles, and sauteed briefly.

Then added a couple tablespoons tomato paste and sauteed for a bit.

Added 3/4 cup hot water and 1/2 tsp salt, brought to a boil, added 3 chicken thighs and a big long green cayenne pepper, quartered the long way. Brought to a boil again, then covered simmered for one hour, turning chicken halfway, adding olives about 10 minutes before the end.

Removed thighs and crisped them in 450-degree oven. Meanwhile removed olives and peppers from sauce, boiled it down in a saucepan, degreased. Returned everything to tagine for another 10-minute simmer, followed by 5 minutes sitting off heat, covered.

Garnished with fresh flat parsley (more of a critical ingredient to this preparation than you might think).

I'd say it was a pretty unqualified success - I wish I'd had better olives and only added them at the end. And I think pimentón de la vera would have added a nice smokiness in place of, or in addition to, the sweet paprika. The interesting part is that the final result was not that spicy, even though that habanero packs a punch (and was supplemented by the other chiles) - the essential sour fruitiness of the habanero was there, but much of the sharp capsicum impact had dissipated somehow. Next time I'll use more.

Final point - it is remarkable how the unglazed tagine adds a flavor of its own. Of course this is the whole point of unglazed tagines - the seasoning - but I wonder whether sometimes I want the slow-cooking properties of earthenware without that particular flavor (which I can't quite pinpoint - some combination of the clay and all the dishes that have cooked in it previously). An excuse to buy a glazed tagine.

Queens of the Stone Age : Josh Homme on Marc Maron's WTF, ACL Webcast, New iTunes EP, AUS/NZ Dates With NiN

(EDITOR'S NOTE: OK, that has to be one of the 3 or 4 longest headlines in Matador history. I'd encourage you to find the others but there's NO PRIZES WHATSOEVER on offer, so perhaps it's best to do something more constructive and/or less Matador-centric. QOTSA's powerful PR firm prepared the copy below and I'll simply add the following ; Marc Maron is one of our finest interviewers/conversationalists and his meeting of the minds with Josh might be one of the 3 or 4 most important moments in the history of the podcast medium. Again, you can try to identify the others, but there are no prizes. It's not like we're made of prizes - GC)

Queens of the Stone Age continue to steamroll their way across the globe in support of their triumphant album, ...Like Clockwork. The juggernaut shows no sign of slowing as the last quarter of 2013 is set to kick just as much ass as the previous three.

Recently, Josh Homme ventured to Marc Maron's garage to take part in his ever-entertaining podcast, WTF with Marc Maron. Hear Marc and Josh discuss aspirations to change guitar strings in under 10 seconds, growing up in the desert and how Iggy Pop's Lust for Life and The Idiot changed his life. The podcast is now available at www.wtfpod.com.

In additional tour news, Queens of the Stone Age are set to join Nine Inch Nails for a jaunt across Australia and New Zealand that is sure to rattle the dust from the rafters. Our friends Down Under are encouraged to prepare themselves for a night they won't soon forget. More info on Queens of the Stone Age and Nine Inch Nails' co-headline march across the outback is available via www.qotsa.com.

For those unable to make it to beautiful Austin, TX for the second weekend of Austin City Limits, the live stream gods smile upon thee. You'll be able to stream Queens' ACL set in its entirety from the comfort of your living room or wherever else you pay homage to rock. More information concerning the live stream can be found at http://www.aclfestival.com/.

The band will also be playing a coveted set for the 27th Annual Bridge School Benefit Concerts, which is headlined by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.. This event takes place on October 26th and 27th at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA. Tickets are currently on sale via Live Nation.

To wrap up new touring news, Queens of the Stone Age will be returning to the Northeast for shows at Agganis Arena in Boston on December 13th and Barclays Center in Brooklyn on December 14th, both supported by The Kills. Those who were lucky enough to attend the band's surprise performance at the Masonic Temple in Brooklyn in June know these shows are not to be missed. Tickets are available now at http://qotsa.com/live/.

And if you are still unable to make it to these dates, we have good news. Bring the Queens of the Stone Age live experience home with their new iTunes Festival live EP available now. Visit iTunes, download and shred away. And to experience Queens in full studio majesty, ....Like Clockwork is now available for a low low price at http://smarturl.it/QOTSAlikeclockwork.

Coming Late November : Yo La Tengo Vinyl Dolls + DVD Set

It occurred to us recently that we've not offered nearly enough Yo La Tengo items to the consumer this year, and with the assistance of the good folks at PressPop and Jim Woodring, here's something a little more ambitious than a tote bag (no offense intended towards producers or buyers of tote bags).  Preorder the following for late November 2013 release here :

Experience the magical collaboration of Yo La Tengo and Jim Woodring.
The three band members, Ira, Georgia and James come to life as 3 original characters in the land of “the Tree!”

Present/past/future, the real/unreal, visible/invisible, sadness/joy……”the Tree” will grow, enveloping all. And the ecstatic creatures that inhabit “the Tree” are the 3 beings blessed by the god of music. The curtain has been raised for Woodring’s mysterious and psychedelic dream land. But the story has just begun……

This product is a set of DVD and 3 soft-vinyl dolls. The DVD contains an original animation (5:20 minutes) of a mind-blowing colorful dream world that centers on “the Tree” and the 3 whimsical characters. It is made by a Japanese production company that specialize in hand-drawn animation: drop. And of course, All NEW music by Yo La Tengo! The 3 colorful soft-vinyl dolls were sculpted by Japanese master sculptor: Tomohiro Yasui. Beautiful packaging design by Jim Woodring with a bonus comic on the back.
