Out Today: Horsegirl - 'Rough Trade Super-Disc'

Horsegirl's 7 track collection of impressionistic demos and outtakes - 'Rough Trade Super-Disc' - is now available to stream and to purchase as limited edition 12" (with etched B-side) exclusively via Rough Trade.

Initially released as an exclusive CD that came with the Rough Trade 'Album of The Month' variant of 'Versions of Modern Performance', the 'Super-Disc' is a collection of demos and outtakes taken from early rehearsals, recorded entirely via phone voice memos. Rough, ready and unadorned, the demos provide a captivating fly-on-the-wall vantage point to the band's music making process.

'Versions of Modern Performance' has been announced as one of Rough Trade's 'Albums of The Year' for 2022. Full editorial list here

'SEEK WARMER CLIMES' OUT TODAY

Today Lower's debut album 'Seek Warmer Climes' is out everywhere (Escho in Denmark, Big Love in Japan and Matador covering the other corners). The band recently wrapped up a tour in the US and are now in the UK playing shows with Fucked Up tonight and tomorrow. The New York times caught the band in New York and called them "a post-punk band in early metamorphosis, luxuriating in unease," and describes their songs as "strong, stirring and ready" and "gnarled and fortressed."

By Now: iTunes / Matador Store - first pressing of the LP on white Vinyl, includes a Lower pin, MP3 download card

'THE FUTURE'S VOID' IS OUT NOW

The time is now. Facebook bought Oculus Rift  for $2 billion two weeks ago.  Erika wrote "Satellites" pre-NSA/Snowden. This record is about the time we are living in right now. 'The Future's Void' is officially out today and not a moment too soon.

Erika posted the lyrics to the record on her blog as well as made a statement. See below:

Like the best of rock lyrics, my intention was that many of these words and lines can be interpreted in different ways.  This includes puns or phrases that take on double meanings as they are repeated.  Similar to “The Future’s Void”…  (solace/soulless, earn/urn, my Lucifer/might loose some fur, etc)

A few of these songs I pored over and edited heavily, but most of them were written through improvisation and quite often the take where the lyrics are still being written is the one that ended up on the track.  I like the urgency of that “first take” vibe, and I like the quality of something that is being created in the moment.  I feel like there is a simplicity and a truth to it, and that often gets taken away if you spend too much time consciously editing.

Pop in your local record store, choice of digital outlet OR order 'The Future’s Void' directly from us on CD, Cassette and LP (limited edition lavender vinyl), and there’s a shirt bundle, too.

ATTN NYC: EMA will be playing Union Pool on Friday, April 11. The only way to obtain a ticket is by purchasing ‘The Future’s Void’ at one of the following NYC record stores:

Record Store Day LP: Stephen Malkmus performs Can's Ege Bamyasi

It was the 40th anniversary of the release of Can's Ege Bamyasi LP (an album known to me in my youth as Ege Bamyasi Okraschoten, because I didn't know anything), and WEEK-END Fest was happening in Cologne. The dates were November 30 through December 2, 2012, and the festival featured artists such as Ian Svenonious, Justus Köhnke, Alexis Taylor (of Hot Chip), Scritti Politti, Deerhoof and Stephen Malkmus.

WEEK-END Fest co-curator Jan Lankisch (of Tomlab Records decided to ask Stephen, currently residing in Germany, whether he wanted to play the entirety of Ege Bamyasi with a band of German musicians Jan had rounded up. And Steve loved the idea. So after a few rehearsals, Steve was joined by Sebastian Blume (synths), Felix Hedderich (bass), Jan Philipp Janzen (drums) and Phillip Tielsch (guitar) for a truly magical & wondrous performance of one of the greatest albums of all time. It took place on December 2 at the Alte Kranhalle in Cologne, and was committed to tape by the band. The sound quality is fantastic; the performance jumps out of the grooves and bubbles its way through your stereo.

We are releasing the LP as a 3500-copy limited edition on green vinyl for Record Store Day, April 20, 2013. (Domino will be releasing it on red vinyl in Europe.) The hand-printed silkscreened sleeve was designed by David Shrigley, who also designed the poster for the event, inspired by the original artwork for Ege Bamyasi. It is being printed in Germany by Slowboy.

We're truly honored to be part of this special collaboration between tons of talented artists.

"This was the first Can LP I bought brand-new (Torquay, July 1972), and it is still my favourite."

-- Julian Cope, Krautrocksampler

"Ege Bamyasi was one of those marginal cut-out LPs (along with the 1st Stooges, Rhinoceros, Ambergris a.o.) that you'd find in the bargain bins of department stores in the early 70s. For kids with no money and an allure to weirdness these cheapos were significant listens. Ege Bamyasi with its okra can cover and live circus rock shot on the back was completely singular. And it sounded cool as shit. I still check it as one of the top 10 greatest rock LPs of all time, and it remains a perpetual inspiration."

-- Thurston Moore

Hear A.C. Newman's 'Shut Down The Streets' a week before it's out

It's out October 9, but today you get a first listen at A.C. Newman's third solo effort ‘Shut Down The Streets’ Do yourself a favor and check out what in our completely unbiased opinion we believe to be 10 of the best songs ever put to tape. Then, do your friends a favor and send them this link. Carl, via a blogging on the Huffington Post, sez:

Here is my album, Shut Down The Streets. Maybe you know me from The New Pornographers, and you may recognize Neko Case's voice in these songs, you may even think "This one sounds so much like a New Pornographers song" and you may ask yourself "Who the hell are the New Pornographers?" All that aside, this album is all about birth, death, happiness and sadness, chronicling a time in my life where all those things had to learn to coexist side by side. There was that and a sudden obsession with the song "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty. That led to an obsession with the psychedelic sounds of the late 70s singer songwriter. So my most personal songs ever somehow made the most sense when I played them in a mutated version of an outdated style from my childhood. That's just how things go.

You can own ‘Shut Down The Streets’ on the LP, CD or digital formats next Tuesday. Grab it at The Matador Store (first 300 LP’s are on green vinyl) or at your favorite music retailler.

Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights: The Tenth Anniversary Edition

Photo: Exum

Ten years ago, Interpol’s debut album seized the imagination of a generation. The spare, lean textures, darkly oblique lyrics and suave stage presence were entirely different from the bands who preceded them on the charts and the radio.

Now on November 19, we are commemorating Turn On The Bright Lights with a Tenth Anniversary Edition, fully remastered in a beautiful deluxe hardbound book with unreleased photos (48 pages in the CD, 28 large pages in the vinyl) and a second disc of bonus tracks, many unreleased, plus demos and B-sides and a DVD.

The album will be available as a double CD+DVD, double LP+DVD, and digital album with digital booklet. Preorders will come with a replica of the band's first piece of merchandise, a button with the original Interpol logo.

THE ORIGINAL ALBUM, REMASTERED:

1. Untitled
2. Obstacle 1
3. NYC
4. PDA
5. Say Hello To The Angels
6. Hands Away
7. Obstacle 2
8. Stella Was A Diver And She Was Always Down
9. Roland
10. The New
11. Leif Erikson

THE BONUS MATERIAL:

1. Interlude (iTunes single) §
2. Specialist (Interpol EP)

The band writes:
In 2002, we released our first album, Turn On the Bright Lights. We had waited close to five years for the opportunity to record an album. Needless to say this was a memorable moment for us. We never had any expectations for how the album would be received. We just wanted to present our music as an album to anyone who would be open to hearing it. It was incredible to finally tour and see people react to these songs. We never could have imagined that the album would have reached so many people throughout the world.

We spent a good deal of time this past year digging through our archives and asking others to dig through theirs in the hopes of uncovering some forgotten material. The result of our hunting and gathering has yielded this Tenth Anniversary Edition of Turn On the Bright Lights. We wanted to do something special for the fans who have always supported us. We wanted to do something special for the best fans in the world. We hope you enjoy it.

Sincerely yours,
Daniel Kessler

Tanlines "Mixed Emotions" Out on True Panther 3.20.12

Brooklyn, NY’s Tanlines will release their debut album, Mixed Emotions, on our imprint True Panther Sounds on March 20th, 2012. It was recorded in various NYC home studios and mixed in Miami by legendary mixing engineer Jimmy Douglass (Timbaland, Aaliyah, Justin Timberlake, Television, Roxy Music). Mixed Emotion’s first taste, “Brothers,” is available for download from their site or direct download below...

Tanlines- Brothers (mp3)

Anyone well-versed with New York City’s diverse music scene for the last few years knows Mixed Emotions is a long time coming. Since their first song hit the web in 2008, Tanlines – comprised of Eric Emm (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Jesse Cohen (drums, keyboards, bass) – have been steadily releasing genius dance singles with labels across the globe, including True Panther, Young Turks and Kitsune. Their live show has taken them worldwide, playing at the likes of The Guggenheim, The Whitney and more in their hometown, as well as an opening slot on Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas’s solo tour in 2009. But it was an ill-fated European tour – filled with some of the most disappointing shows of their respective careers – that ultimately led to Mixed Emotion’s genesis. The band spent long hours driving through Europe, listening to albums by R.E.M., skate punk records from the 80’s, Born in the USA, and more. As Eric explains it, “Listening to them, I became very aware of the lasting resonance of a good song. A good song transcends production trends. That’s what we were missing, and I wanted to start making songs that would have a life of their own.”

The band returned from Europe only to be greeted with a larger problem: making such songs in Emm’s studio, which was not only the place where they created, but the place where they met prior to forming the band, would be impossible; the building that housed his eight year old studio had been sold. It is ultimately this sense of starting over that helps informs some of Mixed Emotion’s most palpable moments.

Mixed Emotions is a testament to the benefits and pitfalls of life’s changes, getting older, and being pushed out of one’s comfort zone. The band that was born out of a studio suddenly had to become, well, a band. Songs were written simply on a guitar, with the band later adding their palette of electronic and organic sounds afterwards. Emm honed his voice, a confident and tranquil baritone, and focused on lyricism, something he had not done seriously in the past. He sings stories about loss, the passage of time, and the lessons and warnings of accumulated knowledge gleaned by someone who has spent an entire lifetime in music. The process stretched the duo – Cohen likened making the album to that of making a film when it was done - and Mixed Emotions is all the better for it.

Sometimes painful, sometimes transcendent, and ultimately a very precise labor of love, Mixed Emotions simply feels vivid. Songs pulse and linger, filled with percussive textures, bright, warm synths and driving kick drums to juxtapose the album’s lyrical melancholia. The record obscures and blurs the lines between synthetic and organic, real and fake, happy and sad. It is the sound of stadium pop in small spaces. And it is one of the most remarkable debut albums you will hear in 2012.

Tanlines will be playing shows across the U.S. this spring. More info to come!
