If you enjoyed something in the MataBlog, thank you very much! If there was something you found particularly troubling, please be advised that a) maybe you should read it again and b) the contents of this blog do not necessarily represent the opinions of Matador Records, Beggars Group, the combined staff of either company, nor the Matador artist roster. Opinions are like friends — hardly anyone has one worth listening to.

EMA - 'The Future's Void' album details / "Satellites" video

Matador Records is even more pleased and excited than usual to announce the release date and album details for the forthcoming LP from EMA, "The Future's Void". The album will be released worldwide (ex-Europe) by Matador on April 8 (via City Slang in Europe April 7). The followup to her acclaimed 2011 LP, "Past Life Martyred Saints," “The Future’s Void” was written by Erika M. Anderson, recorded in Portland, Oregon, and produced by Erika and Leif Shackelford.

EMA recently told NME that the album was influenced by, among other things, NiN demos, the heavier side of early K Records, and William Gibson’s Neuromancer, and that the album deals with the digital commodification of our online lives. She says, “I gravitate toward hooks and melodies, and in some ways the structure of these songs are my poppiest yet,” while noting that the jarring production includes a lot of first takes and spontaneously-recorded ambient sounds “to keep the songs from sounding like advertisements".

Last month the first single "Satellites" was released to raves, garnering "Best New Track” from Pitchfork, who said, "“It’s discontent composed to Carl Sagan proportion, and it’s easily the most bracing thing yet from an artist already more bracing than most.“ Spin said, “it’s a rumbling mammoth that feeds off canned, clapping percussion and waves of static feedback,” while Stereogum noted, “anxiety this ferocious is a timeless thing.”

Today also sees the debut of the "Satellites" video. It’s a DIY affair from EMA which uses tech effects that she says are either "primitive or sophisticated, depending on your point of view".  This is coupled with an interactive "nightmare media" cube on her website, featuring a slow-motion fake-plant fetish and the only footage on the internet that shows the true nature of cats. There's further details on the making of the "Satellites" video here ("we shot most of the footage with a few friends over a long weekend and edited it via Skype screen-share.  There were no stylists, DP, lighting crews, catering or make up artists. But we did have an iPhone that shoots slo-mo, a Canon, a fog machine, and a Microsoft Kinect").

'The Future's Void' track listing:

Satellites
So Blonde
3Jane
Cthulu
Smoulder
Neuromancer
When She Comes
100 Years
Solace
Dead Celebrity

EMA will be playing select performances during SXSW Music, and touring extensively on release; tour dates to be announced soon.

Pre-order CD, LP, and Cassette at the Matador Store (LP on limited edition lavender vinyl, also available bundled with a t-shirt at a discounted price).

Pre-order on iTunes & receive "Satellites" as an instant download. iTunes version comes with bonus track "Drown".

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks On A French TV Program WIth Very Interesting Lighting

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, performing "Lariat" from the new LP/CD/digital album 'Wigout At Jagbags' on the Friday night transmission of France 2's "Tonight Or Never". The program's topic was "Vie privée/Vie publique, quelles limites et quelles conséquences?", which loosely translates to "Privacy / Public Life, what limits and what consequences?" I'm sure there's a clip somewhere of Stephen having a similar debate with Matt Pinfield.

Savages - "Strife" - New Video

Today Savages release the new video for the track Strife taken from their debut album Silence Yourself.

Some words from Savages:

“We wanted to make a video that focused on a timeless human physicality and physical expression, a search for understanding through the movement, action and reaction of two characters. We chose the classical landscape of the empty beach.  A fight ensues between two men: one older, one younger; a tragic outcome, and death.

French director Antoine Carlier - co-founder of Pop Noire records with Jehnny Beth, who previously collaborated with the band on their artwork - filmed the scene with a modern black & white aesthetic on the beaches of Gironde in South-West France. The film is a play on human instincts and desire for survival, echoing the famous beach murder scene in the novel 'The Stranger' by Albert Camus.

Either a tale from the past or science-fiction, this is an endless story of human struggle. We see the fragmentation between two generations, a subject of predilection for Savages (ref: 'I Am Here' manifesto), where the ‘young, intelligent and radical people’ live in servitude to established elders.”

Directed by Antoine Carlier
Produced by Walter Films and Savages
Actors: Leo Pochat and Richard Duval

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks On Pitchfork's "Over/Under"

During Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks' recent NYC promo blitzkrieg, the lovely people from Pitchfork dragged cameras and a whiter-than-white screen into our Hudson Street conference room in order to quiz the quartet about such burning topics as New Year's Resolutions, Cat Shows, Mustard, Time Travel ("timeless", says Stephen) and a few more things. This could be the first time today you hear a kind word about Josh Groban (unless you're Josh Groban, in which case it might be the second or third time).

QOTSA and Savages up for a clutch of NME awards

This years NME awards spoonsored by Austin, Texas (...no, we don't get it either) take place on February 26th in London which sees Queens of the Stone Age and Savages battle it out in the Best Album and Best Live Act categories, whilst Queens are also nominated for Best International Band and Jehnny Beth of Savages is nominated in the Best Band Blog/Twitter.  Voting is open now over at the NME website.  Let's help Queens and Savages fill up their trophy cabinets.

Belle and Sebastian at Sundance Festival, Jan 20th

It's finally here.  The much talked (and blogged) about God Help The Girl project of Stuart Murdoch sees the light of day for the first time next week, with the world premiere taking place at the Sundance Film Festival.  To mark the special occasion, Belle and Sebastian will be playing a one-off show at Sundance in Utah on Monday, January 20th, 100 pairs of tickets are up for grabs by emailing [email protected] - it's first come, first served so get applying if you can attend.

Of performing and unveiling the film next week, Stuart says: “On behalf of the group and myself, I'd like to say how excited we are to be playing a short concert at the bequest of the Sundance Film Festival. In Park City, in Utah, in the snow. Did I say how excited we were? I’m like, vibrating.”

Glasser – dazzling Shape video premieres

Today with the help of The Creators Project, Glasser debuts her incredible video for "Shape", from the recent album Interiors (buy the album).

The video was directed by Jonathan Turner, Glasser's visual collaborator on Interiors.

King Krule - "A Lizard State" video debuts

Today Archy and co. released the video for "A Lizard State" from last year's 6 Feet Beneath The Moon.

The video, directed by Jamie-James Medina and introduced by Alfred Hitchcock, was inspired by Hitchcock's film Dial M For Murder:

>

Speaking on the video, Medina said:

"Archy and I both love Hitchcock and we've spent a lot of time away from music talking about his films. When I heard the phone ringing over the intro all I could think about was Dial M For Murder and the scene where Grace Kelly answers the phone. That really started the conversation. I had this idea of Hitchcock introducing King Krule. I've seen every episode of Hitchcock Presents and every introduction that he gives is brilliant - you could use any episode and it would work. We loved the idea of Archy defying gravity and that being the setting for his performance. But right up until shooting we didn't know if we'd get permission to use the Hitchcock footage - to have him appear. Its such an honor that the Hitchcock estate gave us the opportunity. And then at the very end he said, 'and the room is full of lizards', so we had to find a set of lizards and managed to get a guy who entertains at children's parties."

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - "Lariat" on Fallon / Reddit AMA / Happy National Wigout At Jagbags Day

("Lariat", from Monday's broadcast of "Late Night With JImmy Fallon", footage courtesy NBC)

The 6th album of studio mastery from Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, the not-at-all Dag Nasty baiting 'Wigout At Jagbags' is in finer record stores and is available from all better digital retailers today. (ALSO AVAILABLE DIRECT FROM US).

If this week's multiple NYC instores, gourmet ice cream tastings and network TV appearances weren't enough Jicks activity, Stephen will be doing a Reddit AMA on Thursday at 1pm. Will it be as illuminating as the AMA with "A Amazon warehouse associate who processes your returns"? I'm betting yes.
